Moving Target

Moving Target – Andy Carroll

West Ham stepped up their summer recruitment drive yesterday with the acquisition of Andy Carroll from Liverpool for an undisclosed club record fee. The 24-year-old returns to Upton Park after a relatively successful loan spell last term and arrives on a six-year deal, with the Hammers having the option of extending his contract by a further two years:

Carroll is Sam Allardyce’s third signing of the close-season, following left-back Razvan Rat and keeper Adrian to the club. With Liverpool rumoured to be ready to splash the cash on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iago Aspas, he was deemed surplus to requirement up front and, with the 2014 World Cup looming, has decided to reunite with Allardyce in order to boost his international chances ahead of next year’s competition in Brazil. Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Carroll went on to say:

“It’s fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent. The fans, the lads and the club itself has been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football. Since the end of the season I’ve had a lot of time to think, I’ve missed it and that’s why I’m back. Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did – we did great, and it can only get better for us. The way the club’s being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it’s only going up.”

The History

Carroll’s career began as a 17-year-old back in 2006/07 with a handful of sub appearances for Newcastle. Struggling to establish himself as a first-team player, he was farmed out to Preston North End the following season, where he notched once in 11 matches. Returning to his parent club for the following campaign, he again failed to nail down a regular role and managed just three goals from 14 appearances as Newcastle slipped into the Championship.

The drop to a lower division afforded Carroll the chance of regular game time, though, and he finally thrived as the Tyneside team quickly achieved promotion, racking up 17 goals and 12 assists over 39 matches. Returning to the top-flight as the club’s main forward, Carroll was a Fantasy football phenomenon in the first half of the 2010/11 season, producing 11 goals and seven assists in just 19 appearances before he was snapped up by Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.

His time on Merseyside has been a bitter disappointment, though – from a total of 44 league matches, Carroll found the net on just six occasions, with three assists also accrued. With his style of play clearly at odds with Brendan Rodgers’ tactics, the big Geordie reunited with Allardyce at Upton Park last term and, after a slow start and knee problems, eventually settled, producing seven goals and four assists over 24 league appearances.

The Prospects

If Carroll picks up from where he left off towards the end of the previous season, the omens look good for the Hammers. Although he notched just a single goal and assist over his first 10 appearances, his displays improved significantly after he returned to action from the afore-mentioned knee issue.

In his final 13 appearances for the Hammers, Carroll had a hand in 10 of West Ham’s side’s 18 goals – finding the net six times in addition to supplying four assists. At home, in particular, he was hugely effective, producing attacking returns in six of his final seven matches at Upton Park – a clear sign of his increasing consistency in his new surrounds, with an average of 6.5 points per home game over that period.

In terms of tactics, Allardyce will no doubt retain his lone forward formation, with Kevin Nolan providing support as the most advanced central midfielder and Matt Jarvis supplying plenty of crosses from the left for Carroll to feed off. Given that Nolan is set for a price hike across the Fantasy games after last term’s scoring exploits, Carroll may well be an option if his initial cost is relatively budget friendly.

Having started the previous campaign at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a Liverpool forward, a drop to around 7.5 or 8.0 looks on the cards – a realistic price for a first-choice forward at a mid-table side. With previous mid-price favourites such as Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and possibly Romelu Lukaku expected to escalate in price, our Fantasy targets will be reassessed and could once again focus on Carroll.

Yesterday’s release of the 2013/13 fixture list also looks promising. With home games against Cardiff, Stoke and Everton allied with trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull, the Hammers have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any club. Providing the initial pricing is reasonable, then, the big Geordie certainly done enough over the final few months of his loan spell to indicate he may well be set for a resurgence as Allardyce looks to build upon last term’s solid tenth placed finish.

Does anyone know how much thought goes into player pricing on FPL? Do they have certain criteria they use?

I thought they did it very, very well last year. I was surprised by the accuracy of the majority of prices. With the exception of a handful, most players were priced about right for their eventual points total.

I guess they use the previous figures etc. Tevez was a good example last season. Going off Gerrards figures in the past, Bale would have to be 12.5

SO then Chaps, with new managers all over the top of the table, who do you think is going to finish 123 this season?

My friend bet me 100 CHF that Arsenal and Liverpool would be in top 3.... i quickly accepted. His Argument was that UTD, CITY, CHE all have new managers... i think my money is safe 🙂

UTD - New Manager, Bad Midfield, Need to Spend, Wantaway Rooney, Aging players, Prediction: 3rd
CITY - New Manager, New Players already, Existing v.good squad, Prediction: 1st
CHE - Return of the special one: Excellent Squad, Need for a World Class striker, Prediction: 2nd
ARS - Wenger has money to spend, improving squad, no super world class players, Prediction: 4th
TOTT: Good manager, 1 World Class player, slightly over-reliant, need top striker, stingy BOSS, Prediction: 5th
LIV: Good talent in COUT and STURR and SUAR, but elsewhere is weak, need more class throughtout squad. If Invest will be higher but if not will Take: 6th.

As it stands now, I'd say:

      Chelsea
      Man City
      Man Utd
      Arsenal
      Spurs

Not convinced about Liverpool. Someone could come from the pack and surprise. If it wasn't for Europa League I'd put Swansea 6th.

I think people are massively over-looking Arsenal.

They will certainly be better than last season, especially if they sign Higuain.

If Arsenal had beat City last year, they would have finished 2nd.

I know people will say if they had lost another game they'd finish 9th etc etc, but they really werent that far away.

This is why I said as it stands now.

I think Chelsea have to be favourites if for no other reason than Mourinho being in charge. Now that Sir Alex is gone he has to be the best manager in the Prem and his experience should make the difference. Their midfield is sick too.

If Arsenal get Higuain and he adapts to the Prem then Arsenal could feasibly finish anywhere in the top 4 places, although I am still unconvinced by your defence.

The OP got it right about Utd, that midfield isn't strong at all and an injury to RVP would be disastrous to Utd. I'm also skeptical about Moyes, I rate Mourinho, Pelegrini and Wenger all comfortably ahead of him.

Lots of moves to be made in the transfer market, I suspect, so nothing is set yet.

They had a great start, if I recall, and everyone raved on about Steve Bould's influence on them.

If I recall though, as the season wore on they kind of reverted back to type didn't they?

Those CS were Everton, Fulham, QPR and Newcastle. Not a murderers row of strikers there, but a CS is a CS. Need to improve results against the other top 3 clubs though if you are going to challenge for the title.

Cesar is a good shot stopper. Looks like he's slimmed down a bit for the confed cup too.

Lots of our fans being very negative about him on our fan boards but I felt that he and Nelson were responsible for most of our points early on in the season. (Granted, that was only 4 points but we would have struggled to have gotten that 'many' if it wasn't for them 2).

'I'm very pleased with Galatasaray's offer,' Mikel told Sabah, a daily Turkish newspaper.

'I asked Drogba for advice and he told me that Istanbul is a fantastic city, that Galatasaray is a huge club and that I have to make the move. I have played at Chelsea for a long time and it's now time for me to leave. I'm still only 26 and it's great to receive an offer from a club (Galatasaray) playing Champions League football and doing well in the competition.'

'Talks have reached an advanced level between Chelsea and Galatasaray. Chelsea won't make the move difficult and regarding my salary there won't be a problem. All that is left is for the clubs to reach an agreement.'

When was the turning point for Spanish football? They always had good squads but failed miserably in major tournaments and even then their players weren't of the same mould as the current crop. Did Barca set things in motion with La Masia and other clubs followed as the likes of Valencia and Bilbao seem to be producing players of the same profile.

Anyone think Utd have got a big signing lined up this summer? They normally get their business done fairly early on, don't they?

De Gea: "We've been joking about Thiago joining, but Barça know they have a great player and I don't think they'll let him go."

Surely they'll insist on a buy back clause if they do which would be pointless for Utd imo

It's a great thing for us managers but also a problem, since the next 3 gameweeks don't look the most enticing, with one blank and two potentially difficult games in the league as well as the Super Cup to think about.

I think I'll start with 1 defender and 1 attacker, transferring both out by GW3.

Or should we just go for it and get 3 Chelsea players?

2 attackers, 1 defender imo. lose the defender before united then lose one attacker before the blank in gw 3. then hold onto the third attacker (probably hazard or cavani)

That seems to make sense, but it effectively negates from the DGW of one of your Chelsea players, since you'll still get 3 games out of them in the first 3 GWs. Since Chelsea's fixtures aren't that great, it's making me think whether we'd be better going with Walcott or a City mid.

triple for the dgw is a must though. and i fancy hazard (and cavani if he signs) to have a good season.

alternatively you could take a hit to remove two chelsea attackers after the united game or take a hit to remove an attacker and defender before united and a ft to remove an attacker after the united game

You can target the bandwagons with the transfers, but you're right about leaving yourself open to injuries. I think you have to be comfortable with the idea of a GW3 WC if you do go triple Chelsea

It's no secret that Roman has given him a massive war-chest for overhaul. I can't see a marquee striker signing not being part of that.

I think he'll look at Ba's underwhelming record for Chelsea, see that he was a £7.5m signing and say "meh, he's smalltime, we can do better" and then sign Cavani.

I don't like the first 6 fixtures in the rotation. Then there's 5 good weeks followed by two bad fixtures.

To the Mods - and Rockers, should any have slipped through the net - I think you better make the System friendly to this sort of post, very quickly! 😛 😉

Ramires is getting a bit of interest this morning on the back of speculation that Mourinho loves him. Be great if he's nice a cheap.

What is everyone's opinion about the reports that Mikel is heading to Galatasaray. I feel its good for us as he has always slowed down our game, dwells on the ball too much and makes costly errors in judgement.
Lets get De Rossi or Fellaini now!! 😀

Good for him, good for Chelsea. It will also clear space for another top CM in the EPL, an area that the league is lacking top players in.

Mourinho has been told he can only buy two players unless he sells some first. I reckon your entire squad will be sold.

He would be more likely to get assurances over game-time at City, but the lure of Madrid might be too much.

      I predict City
