Moving Target

Moving Target – Andy Carroll

West Ham stepped up their summer recruitment drive yesterday with the acquisition of Andy Carroll from Liverpool for an undisclosed club record fee. The 24-year-old returns to Upton Park after a relatively successful loan spell last term and arrives on a six-year deal, with the Hammers having the option of extending his contract by a further two years:

Carroll is Sam Allardyce’s third signing of the close-season, following left-back Razvan Rat and keeper Adrian to the club. With Liverpool rumoured to be ready to splash the cash on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iago Aspas, he was deemed surplus to requirement up front and, with the 2014 World Cup looming, has decided to reunite with Allardyce in order to boost his international chances ahead of next year’s competition in Brazil. Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Carroll went on to say:

“It’s fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent. The fans, the lads and the club itself has been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football. Since the end of the season I’ve had a lot of time to think, I’ve missed it and that’s why I’m back. Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did – we did great, and it can only get better for us. The way the club’s being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it’s only going up.”

The History

Carroll’s career began as a 17-year-old back in 2006/07 with a handful of sub appearances for Newcastle. Struggling to establish himself as a first-team player, he was farmed out to Preston North End the following season, where he notched once in 11 matches. Returning to his parent club for the following campaign, he again failed to nail down a regular role and managed just three goals from 14 appearances as Newcastle slipped into the Championship.

The drop to a lower division afforded Carroll the chance of regular game time, though, and he finally thrived as the Tyneside team quickly achieved promotion, racking up 17 goals and 12 assists over 39 matches. Returning to the top-flight as the club’s main forward, Carroll was a Fantasy football phenomenon in the first half of the 2010/11 season, producing 11 goals and seven assists in just 19 appearances before he was snapped up by Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.

His time on Merseyside has been a bitter disappointment, though – from a total of 44 league matches, Carroll found the net on just six occasions, with three assists also accrued. With his style of play clearly at odds with Brendan Rodgers’ tactics, the big Geordie reunited with Allardyce at Upton Park last term and, after a slow start and knee problems, eventually settled, producing seven goals and four assists over 24 league appearances.

The Prospects

If Carroll picks up from where he left off towards the end of the previous season, the omens look good for the Hammers. Although he notched just a single goal and assist over his first 10 appearances, his displays improved significantly after he returned to action from the afore-mentioned knee issue.

In his final 13 appearances for the Hammers, Carroll had a hand in 10 of West Ham’s side’s 18 goals – finding the net six times in addition to supplying four assists. At home, in particular, he was hugely effective, producing attacking returns in six of his final seven matches at Upton Park – a clear sign of his increasing consistency in his new surrounds, with an average of 6.5 points per home game over that period.

In terms of tactics, Allardyce will no doubt retain his lone forward formation, with Kevin Nolan providing support as the most advanced central midfielder and Matt Jarvis supplying plenty of crosses from the left for Carroll to feed off. Given that Nolan is set for a price hike across the Fantasy games after last term’s scoring exploits, Carroll may well be an option if his initial cost is relatively budget friendly.

Having started the previous campaign at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a Liverpool forward, a drop to around 7.5 or 8.0 looks on the cards – a realistic price for a first-choice forward at a mid-table side. With previous mid-price favourites such as Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and possibly Romelu Lukaku expected to escalate in price, our Fantasy targets will be reassessed and could once again focus on Carroll.

Yesterday’s release of the 2013/13 fixture list also looks promising. With home games against Cardiff, Stoke and Everton allied with trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull, the Hammers have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any club. Providing the initial pricing is reasonable, then, the big Geordie certainly done enough over the final few months of his loan spell to indicate he may well be set for a resurgence as Allardyce looks to build upon last term’s solid tenth placed finish.

For anyone looking into Rotations, GW8 is a right show stopper. Can't seem to get a decent 4 way rotation pass that gameweek :-(.

Might be the time to WC as its an international break just before it

    What are people thoughts?

First week back after an international break is a lottery anyway...I see them as a blip. Basically anything can happen...its the week where differentials rule.

Best thing is to look at gwk 9 onwards and ignore gwk8...that's a week where the luck skill scales fall firmly on the side of fortune. Its unspreadsheetable.

      Swansea - SUN
      West Brom - sto
      Fulham - cpl

those are the teams with favorable fixtures that week. i've come up with a few 4 way rotations that pass that gw but then they fail in gw 15. or we can just accept that we might have to deal with one or two weeks with poor fixtues

Entirely possible...IF Rooney leaves, and on the occasions that United want to play two up top, then it would be either a two up with RVP and Hernaandez or RVP in the hole with Hernandez as striker (Kagawa could be in the hole with RVP as striker)....Either way with Rooney out of the picture (?) then Moyes has a decision to make...

Destroyed most Mex advances and high balls himself. If im getting a high value defender in my next team, he's probably gonna be first in line.

    Morning all,

Here's my contribution to the keeper rotation combos. These are worked out based on strength of oppostion, designed to avoid Utd, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton up until the end of January, without picking a premium keeper (from one of those 7 teams) or one from Hull and Crystal Palace unless there are no alternatives:

Hi Teddy. Hopefully you get to see this before your Hot Topic gets drowned out.

The spreadsheet has been updated and your rotations have been included, including it's strengths/potential pitfalls.

Happy reading, and do let me/TW know if you find that there are any debatable facts.

Good effort, although I think that meticuously worked defensive combos will inevitably be disrupted by a) pricing, b) injuries, c) form, d) DGWs and e) probably worth having a big hitter, or at least some mid-budget options with attacking potential.

Keeper planning is much less prone to such disruptions though.

Is Aguero essential at the start of the season?

    They have good fixtures.

Last season he was injured quite a lot, then was also rotated.

His first season was very impressive.

Plus he may well be cheaper this season.

Depends if you include free kicks and corners within set pieces....plenty more.

But basically any defender who takes penalties is a great option. Remember Alexander at Burnley? He was incredible.

Didn't check the final tally, but midseason last year the numbers of penalties awarded and scored were significantly down on previous seasons.

So last season i went with 3 big defenders early season and managed to get 3 out of 5 cleansheets from all of them. Also managed to get a goal each from all defenders. This enabled me to get a good start. That said keeping in mind the love for uber defences around these parts, i'm in a bit of a dilemma. I like having balance and getting points from all parts of the park but last season makes me think it'd be worthwhile going for a 2 biggish defenders (2 from Ars/Liv/Tot/City) due to the fixtures. When it comes to the attackers we might not know where the points are coming from until the 3rd week i'd say when we've analysed formations etc. That said, there are too many good attackhers to choose from already. Point of this post? Ugh!

Let's say the following is a given:

        Keepers:9-9.5m
Defenders: Let say one of Chelsea(6.5m) + ubercheap

Now with all these rotation spreadsheets flying around....is anyone to stick their neck out and say double up on a keeper and defender from the same team?

        For example South/Nor rotation? Boruc+Clyne & Ruddy+Turner?

Yes, I'll be doing that. Rotation is a numbers game. Doubling up will give you good weeks and bad weeks but overall, if you're picking the right fixtures you should come out on top.

I think doubling up is bad for H2H but fine for classic.

Thanks Rosc, my thought exactly. If a keeper has a favorable fixt hen his def has as well especially if like say Turner or Clyne you have possible attacking threat.

It worked a treat for a while last season with Turner + Rudd until injuries messed up everything. The season before New/Swans double up was magic with Krul+Simpson vs Vorm+taylor(?).

Problem is to get it right early on in the season.

That is the problem 😐 Rotation relies on having solid data but so much is guesswork at the start of the season. What if Norwich do a Newcastle and abandon their home defensive form? What if Clyne loses his place? etc etc

Very much so, even considered trebling 😯

I can see lack of options in the 4.5m range with West Ham defenders looking likely to be valued around 5m. Norwich defenders could even increase into that range?

I may look into CHE Clyne Shaw Turner Martin

There is potential to then pick up some 4.5m keeper bargains in Westwood or Butland should Mignolet Begovic leave

Cool, what's your thought then when it comes to a possible double up with a cheap defender + keeper combo from the same team? Or would you rather avoid that scenario and get a more exp keeper or defender from another team to spread the risk?

I am fine with doubling up there as I am not afraid of that "risk". Real risk is doubling on two attackers from the top teams (say Tevez & silva or RVP & Kagawa). In this case though we have to find the great performing bargains, and we make lots of mistakes in picking the wrong ones (Gorkks instead of Demel). In this case you might even just get one of the double up right (say Jaask as gk last year but the wrong Def).

I'm still kicking myself for not getting Bego at Stoke when he was cheap, as I already had Cameron or Wilson.

Locking in cheap defenders on these teams that are set up to defend for 90 mins is key, and know that we will have to refine it all the time. We prefer to use our transfers on attackers, so there is an argument for security in def, but if you get it rigt (eventually) then your dough is free to spend on attack.

That's my plan and i will keep at it.
          Good luck.

To clarify though: I don't set out to double up at the start....I'm just trying to identify the gems, but if they're on the same team then I still go right at it.

Taking the RVP question further, do fixtures matter when it comes to big teams playing each other? I remember us having all sorts of debate last season and there were more than a few cases where the weakish teams parked the bus making it difficult for strong teams to score and big team vs big team games had quite a few goals in them.

Classic case was City not being able to score vs. Reading. Also when it comes to the new manager question, Moyes is still a proven premiership manager while Pellgrini is new to the premiership..

I've no problem with playing attacking players with difficult fixtures - probably because of the reasons you mention. But defenders I try to avoid.

Yep....always been the way Lateriser...Just because a top team has difficult fixture doesn't mean that the game won't be full of goals...Of course a jackpot five nil win either way is unlikely but five goals shared is just as likely as most other games...

I'm currently going without RVP for the first 3 games then Aguero > RVP

The reasoning, I pay the mega bucks for RVP for a solid captaincy option, in the first 3 games I would not captain him therefore he makes a debut on my team GW4 Captain at home to Palace, BOOM!

No doubt he will get points in the first 3 but I can see others equalling his points in these games.

Arsenal are set to make 25-year-old striker Gonzalo Higuain the club's highest-paid player once a transfer fee is agreed with Real Madrid, according to the London Evening Standard.

The report states that Italian club Juventus have had an £18.7m bid rejected and negotiations are taking place between Arsenal and Real, with the Gunners offering about £20m, although Real want £25.5m.

Argentina international Higuain has helped Real to three La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey since joining from River Plate in 2007

Off topic I know but still a long time till Fantasy Football truly starts. The PS4 vs Xbox One battle is on. With Xbox conceding that the PS4 was better and abolishing 24 hour connections and no resale of games, the battle comes down to hardware, price and features.

The specs are very similar, however PS4 just edges it with what seems like better graphics.

Both consoles have very similar features, with the ability to share gameplay with your friends, seeing other people's gameplay, downloading games whilst playing another game etc. (albeit you will need to pay approx £40 on each console for a on-line subscription). However the Xbox One seems to allow you to stream TV from your console and with the Kinect you can use voice commands to switch from TV to game and vice versa. You can also use Skype with the Kinect on Xbox, at the same time as playing a game. For features Xbox clearly wins it.

When it comes down to price PS4 (£350) wins at first look over the Xbox1 (£420). However you must take onboard that Xbox comes with Kinect, where as PS4 doesn't come with the eye toy (also must add the eye toy does not seems as advanced as Kinect. Although Xbox's specs aren't as good you must take into account, the ability to watch TV and use Skype whilst gaming.

The PS4 Vs Xbox 1 battle comes down to consumer needs. If you want a updated game console from the previous generation (PS3, Xbox 360), where it's all about games PS4 is for you. If you want a home entertainment system, where you can watch TV, play games, use motion control tech, just do everything, the Xbox One is for you.

at the moment it is more expensive to download games, it could change but i highly doubt it. You have to think about the costs of hosting all the files etc. online

That don't make no sense. You cut out the costs of packaging and distribution so it should cost less. And a hard copy seems a safer format to have the game on in case the download went wrong.

The need for a code to go online is a common tactic now. The new copy comes with a code. If you don't have one (because your game is second hand), you have to buy one. Simple but effective.

He is big and ugly but he will score goals and rack up the points which is all that matters. I would fancy Carroll to perform better than Lambert this season and Rodriguez will share the goals, Lukaku will be a squad player if he stays at Chelsea, Kone is gone, Berbatov is frustrating to own and Benteke/Sturridge will be more expensive.

Not sure about the promoted sides scoring many and I prefer Snodgrass to RVW.

I wonder who will captain Arsenal next season.

Surely not Verm, as he was dropped last year.

I am just trying to picture which Arsenal player will be lifting the EPL in May.
