Moving Target

Moving Target – Andy Carroll

West Ham stepped up their summer recruitment drive yesterday with the acquisition of Andy Carroll from Liverpool for an undisclosed club record fee. The 24-year-old returns to Upton Park after a relatively successful loan spell last term and arrives on a six-year deal, with the Hammers having the option of extending his contract by a further two years:

Carroll is Sam Allardyce’s third signing of the close-season, following left-back Razvan Rat and keeper Adrian to the club. With Liverpool rumoured to be ready to splash the cash on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iago Aspas, he was deemed surplus to requirement up front and, with the 2014 World Cup looming, has decided to reunite with Allardyce in order to boost his international chances ahead of next year’s competition in Brazil. Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Carroll went on to say:

“It’s fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent. The fans, the lads and the club itself has been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football. Since the end of the season I’ve had a lot of time to think, I’ve missed it and that’s why I’m back. Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did – we did great, and it can only get better for us. The way the club’s being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it’s only going up.”

The History

Carroll’s career began as a 17-year-old back in 2006/07 with a handful of sub appearances for Newcastle. Struggling to establish himself as a first-team player, he was farmed out to Preston North End the following season, where he notched once in 11 matches. Returning to his parent club for the following campaign, he again failed to nail down a regular role and managed just three goals from 14 appearances as Newcastle slipped into the Championship.

The drop to a lower division afforded Carroll the chance of regular game time, though, and he finally thrived as the Tyneside team quickly achieved promotion, racking up 17 goals and 12 assists over 39 matches. Returning to the top-flight as the club’s main forward, Carroll was a Fantasy football phenomenon in the first half of the 2010/11 season, producing 11 goals and seven assists in just 19 appearances before he was snapped up by Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.

His time on Merseyside has been a bitter disappointment, though – from a total of 44 league matches, Carroll found the net on just six occasions, with three assists also accrued. With his style of play clearly at odds with Brendan Rodgers’ tactics, the big Geordie reunited with Allardyce at Upton Park last term and, after a slow start and knee problems, eventually settled, producing seven goals and four assists over 24 league appearances.

The Prospects

If Carroll picks up from where he left off towards the end of the previous season, the omens look good for the Hammers. Although he notched just a single goal and assist over his first 10 appearances, his displays improved significantly after he returned to action from the afore-mentioned knee issue.

In his final 13 appearances for the Hammers, Carroll had a hand in 10 of West Ham’s side’s 18 goals – finding the net six times in addition to supplying four assists. At home, in particular, he was hugely effective, producing attacking returns in six of his final seven matches at Upton Park – a clear sign of his increasing consistency in his new surrounds, with an average of 6.5 points per home game over that period.

In terms of tactics, Allardyce will no doubt retain his lone forward formation, with Kevin Nolan providing support as the most advanced central midfielder and Matt Jarvis supplying plenty of crosses from the left for Carroll to feed off. Given that Nolan is set for a price hike across the Fantasy games after last term’s scoring exploits, Carroll may well be an option if his initial cost is relatively budget friendly.

Having started the previous campaign at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a Liverpool forward, a drop to around 7.5 or 8.0 looks on the cards – a realistic price for a first-choice forward at a mid-table side. With previous mid-price favourites such as Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and possibly Romelu Lukaku expected to escalate in price, our Fantasy targets will be reassessed and could once again focus on Carroll.

Yesterday’s release of the 2013/13 fixture list also looks promising. With home games against Cardiff, Stoke and Everton allied with trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull, the Hammers have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any club. Providing the initial pricing is reasonable, then, the big Geordie certainly done enough over the final few months of his loan spell to indicate he may well be set for a resurgence as Allardyce looks to build upon last term’s solid tenth placed finish.

Still wondering how BR is going to manage the Reina-Mignolet combo. Both are too good to be sitting on the bench.

Great signing if it ever happens though. The Belgian is a top-class keeper.

I think it's almost certain to presume Reina would be sold if Mignolet was signed, Liverpool are just doing the opposite of what they did last summer; last summer we sold players first and didn't have enough time to bring in replacements hence Shelvey playing a false nine, this window we're buying early and will sell later, there will be many departures 🙂

You'd think Barcelona has to be the only destination... but stranger things have happened, Arsenal have expressed an interest before, Monaco need a keeper, I hope he does get some good offers.

Tahiti's biggest win is 30-0 vs The Cook Islands.

So maybe if Spain played The Cook Islands?

    Clean Sheets against Fixture Difficulty

Fixture difficulty is defined by the oppositions shots in the box over a season. It can be seen that the less the opposition shoot in the box the more likelihood of a clean sheet.

Sorry Gink, I can't read box plots. Not sure if this shows the same lack of correlation as the scatter did.

If you're still of the mind that this proves no correlation, you need to bear in mind that this is extremely noisy data. There probably isn't enough data to produce a compelling visualisation of the type you attempted. But that does not mean that there is no relationship between opposition's strength of attack and probability of clean sheets. My original post shows that there is one if you take measures to control the noise. It's too big a stretch to say that those averages emerged by chance from data with no underlying relationship.

Of course, choosing an easy fixture over a hard one is no guarantee of a clean sheet in any given gameweek. We're talking about stacking probabilities in your favour so that if you do it every week then the probabilities end up on your side.

Well the way I see it, some time ago, Higuain played in Spain, right? And these days its seems he will play in England, right? So, something must have happened for him playing in Spain to go away, right, and for him playing in England to come along. Now what I want to know is ... how did we get from the one case of affairs, to the other case of affairs?

    TRIGGERLIP:S GUIDE PART 2

    PLUG AND PLAY
How to cut down on hits and avoid problems

Yesterday I posted my template for budget allocation. (see below). Many people cant understand why I would leave a forward spot of 13.5 m when im not buying Van Persie. Here is an example

    TEAM A

This team dosent buy RVP , he goes for a cheaper Chelsea forward (10m) Like the vast majority of players uses the 3.5m saved to improve midfield and defence, as budgets are tight he spends all 100m .

    TEAM 2 (My team)

Like team A , i also go for the Chelsea forward , however instead of spending the 3.5 I bank it

If both teams went on the forum for a RMT team A would win. However ,his team isnt really better because it lacks flexibility,

Lets imagine GW1 RVP scores a hattrick and our Chelsea striker is poor. Everybody wants RVP .team A is already in trouble , he will have to spend 4 or maybe even 8 points to bring him in ,or risk beeing left behind
My team can slot him in for free

    SUMMARY
keep a forward slot open that can allow the most expensive striker to be bought in for no hits. Because when he home to Hull with 90% in the capt poll you going to need him

    TEMPLATE
    Goal keepers

4.5 m4.5 Basically no more than 9m spent on keepers

    Defence

    4 m 4 m 4.5 m 5m 6m Only thee to start each week (23.5m)

    Midfield

    12m 10m 7m 6.5m 4.5m This works well (40)

    Forwards

13.5m 8m 6m (27.5m) This will probably allow any striker in top spot, however if RVPcomes in at 14 feel free to move .5m from midfield

Hmm, I'm not sold on this. What happens if once the gw is done and dusted you still have no interest in RvP? You had 3.5m sat in the bank which could have been used to get Hazard's 11 points instead of the 2 you got for Nolan.

Especially when team value is so stretched at the beginning anyway. If I don't get RvP it's because I feel I could use that money better elsewhers in the team.

      Triggerlips strikes again. Fantastic mate.

Just a little conundrum here for you.

Suppose come GW1 Chelsea don't have a striker worthy of investment (i.e no Cavani). Do you just spend the extra money and get him straight away or do you pick an non-DGW striker like Aguero/Higuain instead?

I also wonder if 8 will be enough for a 2nd striker, I suppose we can't know until prices are released. The template looks great, but a bargain in midfield of the 5 million variety could offer more scope up top.

I would only worry that it may be difficult to find real gems of strikers to fill the 8m and 6m slots, I could see RVW and Aspas maybe providing some value their but i think there should be consideration for a heavier hitting forward. Great post, very informative. 😉

Fine in theory , however in practice there will be injuries, and other problems in your team that need sorting. For example a cheap mid not in your team may score a hattrick in gw1 ,you will want him in for the price rises ,

I left £2m (I think it was) last season for Torres -> Van Persie.

Had a poor week 1, but RVP scored a hattie as soon as I brought him in.

Whether or not I'd have had a better week 1 with an extra £2m (and then -4 for a hit perhaps) I'm not sure.

I agree with you, although in that scenario I would rather have just had RVP from that start.

Now looking again at your teams, in GW1 RVP blanks. Team A is in a stronger position having not wasted 3.5M in GW1. Two sides to every story.

Not really m because come GW 4 that team will still need van persie, unless RVP is really, really bad in first 3 weeks. Also dont foget team 2 would also be doing better than all those teams who bought him in at the start.

It isnt perfect , nothig is ,but it puts the player in flexible position , beibg able to react to the unpredictable nature of the opening weeks, without pulling the team out of shape
