Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Shinji Kagawa

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund early last summer, Shinji Kagawa looked primed to become a key midfield target for the 2012/13 season. Having helped steer Jurgen Klopp’s side to the title in his final year in the Bundesliga, the Japan international’s displays in the role in “the hole” suggested United were set to shift formation to 4-2-3-1 and hand him a place behind Wayne Rooney as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to wrestle the title back from City:

Three days before their Gameweek 1 opener at Everton, however, the acquisition of Robin Van Persie turned the Fantasy landscape on its head and made a significant dent in Kagawa’s prospects. While the Dutchman ran riot and grabbed the goals that recaptured the crown, the former Dortmund man struggled to settle in his debut season, with a knee injury and occasional game time on the left flank limiting his potential in what proved to be Ferguson’s final term in charge at Old Trafford.

Key Factors

  • Wayne Rooney’s decision to hand in a transfer request towards the end of last season looks key to Kagawa’s prospects. Omitted from the United squad for the final couple of league games under Ferguson, Rooney seems determined to leave after a lacklustre campaign – having dropped deeper to accommodate Van Persie, his possible departure would free up Kagawa’s preferred position in “the hole” and afford him the chance to slot in behind Van Persie.

  • New manager David Moyes’ penchant for a lone striker system may also be advantageous. While it’s all too early to ascertain just what sort of formation the former Everton boss has in mind as he takes the Old Trafford reins, his use of Marouane Fellaini as the most advanced central midfielder last term was hugely beneficial to Fantasy managers. Providing Rooney leaves, Kagawa’s playmaking abilities seem the natural fit amongst United’s current midfield crop – given that he produced 13 goals and eight assists from 31 appearances in his final year at Dortmund, his suitability to the role is more than apparent.

  • Having finished last season with just six goals and four assists over 20 appearances, it’s possible that Kagawa is in line for a slight drop in price next time out. Starting last season at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he racked up just 87 points and can resultantly be expected to slip to around 8.0 when the player lists are revealed next month. Given that previous mid-price options such as Fellaini, Michu and Kevin Nolan are set for a hefty price hike after their respective displays in a similar position, the Japan international could prove to be a little more budget friendly when assessing the midfield landscape.

  • Kagawa’s hat-trick and 21 point FPL against Norwich in Gameweek 28 highlights his capabilities. Granted, six goals over 1,314 minutes was far from impressive but compared to United’s other midfielders, it’s positively prolific – Nani and Antonio Valencia both notched one goal apiece, while Ashley Young failed to find the net at all last season. New boy Wilfried Zaha also offers an option but after a campaign where Michael Carrick was United’s highest scoring midfielder with a mere 101 FPL points, Kagawa could be primed to become a key player as the Moyes era gets underway.

For those of you who might be planning a trip to Germany to watch some football, the 2013-14 Bundesliga fixtures have just come out.

    http://bit.ly/19XIHX0

The biggest source of controversy so far is that Borussia Dortmund have been handed 6 out of 6 away league fixtures after Champions League group matches. By comparison, Bayern Munich and Leverkusen get 3 home and 3 away.

Has anyone done the same home/away CL calculation for the Premier League participants?

6-6 away, certainly seems very harsh. It does make you wonder about the independence of the officials in sport.
They don't even try to appear even handed these days.

It could just be a statistical quirk. The chances of flipping a heads 6 times in a row is around 1.6%, so for 32 teams in the group stages you would expect this to happen to someone once every other year.

Not easy to get BVB tickets - you would need to book well in advance. It's easier to get tickets for the away end, especially in games against teams with few fans such as Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg.

I'd avoid Viagogo like the plague and go straight to the Borussia Dortmund ticket office:

Not sure if it's considered to balance out but almost the exact opposite is true when considering the games BEFORE the CL group games:

Man Utd: CPA, WBA, SOT, ful, car, NEW (4/6 home)
Man City: sto, vil, whu, NOR, TOT, sot (2/6 home)
Chelsea: eve, tot, CAR, new, whu, sto (1/5 home)
Arsenal: sun, swa, NOR, LIV, SOT, EVE (4/6 home)

Theoretically the same level of travelling across the fixtures when considering the PL, CL, PL pattern then.

Worth noting that the Crystal Palace match which people are eyeing up Man Utd assets for (particularly RVP) is immediately followed by the first Champions League group game and then Man City away.

I don't personally see Moyes rotating RVP for that game and making plans this early is ludicrous but for those who disagree food for thought perhaps...

Moyes was never much of a rotator at Everton, but this might have been through necessity. He might turn into another Benitez with a larger squad at his disposal!

This is a good point - hard to predict his habits/preferences when he's never been in this situation before. I suppose a degree of rotation is necessary to keep the squad players happy.

Oh hell, I'd forgotten about that. Every single united press conference from now on:

We've got ["a couple of"/"one or two"] ["knocks"/"niggles"] but we hope it'll be OK.

That Moyes will vaguely allude to as "one or two players have a couple of knocks and niggles" in his press conference and we'll be none the wiser until Demi provides the team sheets and the site melts down.

Remind me again why we do this?

Kevin de Bruyne now seems likely to return to Chelsea for the 2013-14 season despite interest from Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

His advisor Patrick de Koster told Belgian newspaper "Het Laatste Nieuws" today that Mourinho "had made it clear that Kevin would play a role next season at Chelsea and that he would like to make him a better player".

Yes, Adrion was completely useless. He selected the wrong squad, and then picked the wrong team from that squad (Lasogga & Mlapa were bang out of form - I said so before the tournament started).

Adrion didn't develop the players himself, you know - the clubs and U-17, U-19 national managers had done that for him. He only had the job due to being a friend of Joachim Löw's.

Marin was a terrible signing by Chelsea.

Yes, Marin looked promising at that age but failed to develop. He became too selfish, with too many fruitless mazy dribbles and a reputation for diving.

I rate Kevin de Bruyne very highly though. He virtually carried a struggling Werder Bremen side on his own last season, which is always the test of a good player.

No, a loan deal for de Bruyne doesn't seem likely (see original post above). Chelsea might be tempted by a permanent move if Dortmund offer a large sum, but they really shouldn't sell him.

    - Moyes will install a defensive solidarity at United that achieves more CSs than City.

Actually, Higuain's goals-per-game in La Liga is better than Aguero's by a third: 0.56 to 0.42

Will everyone please stop highlighting how good Higuain is - not only am I paranoid that FPL Towers are monitoring our conversations and setting prices accordingly but also you'll jinx him!

That's one way to look at it - I prefer the easy life of being able to fit as many of the players I want in my team with a minimum of compromise.

Much like I wish Chelsea didn't have this stupid DGW1 again as it makes planning more complicated. I'm a simple soul 🙂

Do you think there are certain Nationalities that are more likely to stay longer in Premier League?

By this I dont mean nationalities that are better in PL but that are more likely to be HAPPY to stay and play in UK?

One would imagine that players that are used to warmer climates (like spain) would prefer to stay and play in warmer cities, and those that have more similar climates to UK are more likely to be happier playing for a british club (Eg French, Dutch?)

..and perhaps it is more than just the climate, but also the culture of certain cities and the kind of people that live in them,

It is these things that are makin me think that MAN UTD are more likely to sign Strootman than Thiago, and that the majority of these Big Name Forwards (Cavani, Hulk, Higuain) will probably end up going elsewhere...?

yeah, and i dont blame them either,

Just when you have a lot of MONEY Clubs these days in Spain, Russia, France, UK then these MONEY players have more options 🙂

you can't generalize a whole nation. Each player has a different personality, priorities and goals.

And Man Utd wouldn't be signing Strootman because he's Dutch, if they do sign him it will be because they're idiots tho 😉

HAHA!! You dont rate him?? I think he is just what Utd need... strong solid Mid

And i agree you shouldnt generalise. I wasnt referring to the CLUBS choosing certain nationalities, more nationalities choosing certain Nations leagues...

The real problem is that English clubs do not take proper care of foreign players when they first arrive. Apparently Drogba had to find his own home and school for his children despite the fact he spoke very limited English. Apparently he was living in a hotel in Slough for 6 months when he first arrived. He settled eventually but I'm sure plenty of class players have never settled because they were not properly taken care of by their new clubs. If you spend £30m plus on a player surely you should spend the small amount to hire someone to help them settle. Why England always lose, a book I read, covers this very well.

The HoF rankings are a tad annoying; despite beating my mate every year since he joined he is still way above me because of my abysmal first season ranking when he was not playing (1 million-odd because I joined in week 20!).

Afternoon Gents, I see a few people are designing a possible 'template' for there team and price structure so I thought i'de have ago...

    GK - 5.0

    DEF - 4.0(x3) 4.5(x1) 5.5(x1)

    Walcott Bale Hazard Mata 4.5(x1)

    RvP Higuain RvWolf

Possible signings that could also feature:

    Ronaldo
    Isco
    Thiago

        But if you take the general thinking around here are Bale at 12, RVP at 13.5 and a defender at 7, I would do the following;

        GK: 4.5, 4.5 (9)

        DEF: 7, 6, 4.5, 4.5, 4 (26)

        MID: 12, 9, 6.5, 6, 4.5 (38.)

        FWD: 13.5, 9, 4.5

I think that will be far too expensive

      9.5
      22
      10, 12, 10, 10.5, 4.5
      13, 10, 6
