Scout Report – Iago Aspas

Having acquired Luis Alberto from Sevilla late last week, Liverpool returned to La Liga to finally complete the signing of Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo on a long-term deal. The 25-year-old passed a medical at the club on Sunday afternoon and, subject to international clearance, will arrive at Anfield for a fee believed to be in the region of £7.7m.

The club’s third signing of the summer, after the Reds also picked up Kolo Toure earlier this month, Aspas is reported to have rejected the likes of Valencia and Swansea, in addition to interest from Spain and Italy, in order to push through the transfer. In an interview with the club’s official website, he went on to say:

“It wasn’t a tough decision at all. I’m really happy to have come to a big club like this one. Having weighed up all my options for this window, a massive club like Liverpool was always my first choice. I’ve not had the chance to talk with the manager at any length just yet but I think that good players can slot into any role and not just one set position.”

The History

A product of the Celta Vigo youth academy, Aspas’ career kicked off in 2006-07 for the club’s reserves. He spent three seasons there, scoring 11 goals in 84 appearances before making his first-team breakthrough towards the end of the 2008-09 campaign, where he notched twice in three appearances for the-then second division-based side.

Installed as the club’s main forward, Aspas proceeded to score nine times in 64 league games over the next couple of seasons before finally finding his feet in 2011/12. Racking up 23 strikes in 35 matches, he ended the campaign as top scorer in the Spanish second division, with his displays helping clinch his side’s promotion. Last term was Aspas’ first in La Liga, which he passed with flying colours – with 12 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances his contribution was key to Celta’s survival, playing a part in 19 of their 37 goals over the course of the campaign. Intriguingly, Aspas’ 57% shot accuracy last term would have been second highest in the Premier League, according to the Liverpool site, with Luis Suarez further down the list on 50%.

The Prospects

Although he was mainly fielded as the lone striker in Celta’s 4-2-3-1 system, Aspas will offer Liverpool plenty versatility should Rodgers persist with his preferred 4-3-3 formation. Predominantly left-footed, the Spaniard can be fielded on either flank as well as through the middle and, in addition to possessing a keen eye for goal, is technically adept and will afford the Reds plenty creativity up top.

Crucially for Rodgers, Aspas is also a dynamic type of player who will slot in seamlessly with the club’s pressing game, hassling and chasing down defenders from the front. Judging by the praise from certain quarters, his arrival looks yet another good bit of business from Rodgers, though ultimately, the future of Luis Suarez is likely to determine just where the new boy is utilised. If Rodgers decides to sell his star man, Aspas could well vie with Daniel Sturridge for the central role, though the pair could also alternate on the right, with Rodgers even looking for an interchanging front three along with Philippe Coutinho during matches.

The rumoured deal for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will also play a part in how we assess the Anfield landscape, with the Armenian’s preference for a role in “the hole” suggesting a move to 4-2-3-1 if he eventually completes his mooted move. Certainly, Rodgers’ desire for increased squad competition this season looks on the cards, though Aspas can surely be expected to knock the likes of Stewart Downing down the pecking order. Although the Liverpool boss sang Alberto’s praises after snapping up the youngster last week, his lack of first-team experience may see him settle for game time from the bench, while the likes of Raheem Sterling and Fabio Borini may have to accept squad roles in the campaign ahead.

Aspas’ price is obviously key across the Fantasy games. Liverpool racked up 71 goals in their first season under Rodgers – the fourth most impressive record in the Premier League – highlighting the potential of their main attacking assets. A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely and if Suarez does indeed depart, the Spaniard could well be earmarked by many managers as a real alternative to Sturridge as part of our front three. Ideally, it would suit Fantasy managers best for Suarez to still be at Merseyside when the player price lists are revealed next month and then leave before the season starts – this would ensure he comes in at a cost in accordance with last term’s displays and allow the Reds’ other forwards a kinder price tag. Suarez is, of course, suspended for Liverpool’s opening six fixtures of the season and while Sturridge is currently nursing an ankle injury, he is expected to be ready well in advance for the opener in a couple of months’ time.

There’s no doubt that Coutinho’s cost is also likely to have a say in our plans, though. If, as expected, he remains classified as a midfielder, a price of around 8.0 to 8.5 may be enough to persuade many to invest in the brilliant Brazilian and free up a vital space for our forward three. Given that he produced nine or more points in three of the last four Gameweeks of 2012/13, the former Inter man may well prove the best value of any Liverpool attacker next time round, though if Aspas turns out to be Suarez’s direct replacement, both Coutinho and Sturridge have already shown it’s not all about marquee signings when assessing Liverpool’s Fantasy prospects.

The fixture list is also in Liverpool’s favour. With home games against Stoke, Southampton and Palace allied with trips to Villa, Swansea and Sunderland, Rodgers’ side have the strongest schedule of any side in the opening seven Gameweeks, according to our season ticker. Goals seem likely, then, but picking the correct Liverpool option is becoming increasingly tricky as Rodgers continues to strengthen his options – there is no denying Aspas is a quality signing but perhaps it’ll be only at the end of August, when the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool’s shopping spree is done, that we’re likely to get a better handle on his Fantasy potential for the season ahead.

Read page11 of last post and makes me think...I'm not too welcommed here ha?
I post couple of questions / comment / week here. Mainly I'm just a lurker looking if there's injury or other important news and if I make comment, I have to admit, that it's usually to ask something. That's because I use this site to get something extra for my fantasy team or planned transfers.

Lost my grav when HC was introduced and haven't bothered to get it back yet.
Last week I got helpful info (Roscola?) why I don't have grav anymore and how to get it back.
Was a member last year and planned to be one this year too, even tough I don't use those stats etc too much. Next 6 ticker is quite enough for me actually.
Now I see that I should be also sharing information to be really entitled to ask questions...not sure I like how this site is improving.

    I have to work now.
After work, I go and buy some Prozac.

Most on here will have started off in a similar vein to you, and no forum gains much from an unhelpful, cliquey userbase which alienates new or infrequent users. By and large it is a friendly bunch on here; post away, you'll get responses.

I think the point here Snowman is that it's fine to use the site to purely inform yourself, but it's like anything really, people like to think that if they give (advice) they may also receive as well. It's how communities work. If every person just came to get information, we would read the articles, look at the ticker, RMTs, etc, but there would be no discussion whatsoever. It's often from discussion that the best insights can be gained.

I had started using FFS just last year, probably 2 weeks before FPL kicked in. I did the same, and there were some who helped, and some who didn't care or were rude. I became more active and helped others out as much as I could. That's how they got to know me a little and it was all smooth for me since then. So my advice would be, post your questions, and at the same time, reply to others as well with your opinions if you can.

Well yeah, I've got Azpilicueta pinned up in my watchlist. Mourinho doesn't really like changing his defense much, so if Azpilicueta could nail down a spot on the right, he'd be one to have. I believe he'll also be around 6.0 in FPL. Which would be too good for a Chelsea defender under Mourinho if he nails down that spot.

Not sure if this will get mod'd, as it got left at the bottom of last page so,

    Repost...

Following on from SABG's post above (+1), how are and how do regs intend to view the forums (i.e. leave it based on timestamp, or do more intend to view it based on voting/hot topics). I think if most regs were to switch and use it by the ratings and actively used the upvote more frequently it will lead to a natural filter of the Gravless' RMTs , etc.

I hadn't thought about it too much before now, but even now there does seem to be quite a low percentage of upvoting. Personally I think it's at the quieter times when good productive posts are garnered, that we should be supporting the regs and actually giving the +1 instead of waiting for opinions and posts that directly help us. Basically I think it's up to us as the community to make the place work better for us - HomeCrowd gives us better tools to do this, but it's up to us to use them...

Not sure if I've got my point across exactly, but what's pls thoughts on this?

... Copied over my response (and cleaned up so replies can follow here) 🙂

Always manic from about 9am onwards on a Saturday, I log on read the articles and post some advice where I can (grav, a reg or not!).

I will probably leave the settings on time, and skim through the posts but now under HC will be paying particular attention to the Hot Topic and Stickies.

Hopefully if us Mods, Jonty & co are up to the mark, well be able to cherry pick the 'gems' or little nugget that will help all posters with their last minute decisions on match days e.g. Team news, injuries, form guides etc.

Up-voted I do agree but i can see both sides of the argument. I dont want this site to become elitist and only for regulars. We all have good advice and as someone said on the previous page we were all gravless lurkers once. Admittedly its hard to distinguish between an 11:20 poster and someone new to the site who might turn out to be a potential paying member in future. Im going to keep it ordered by time.

RMTs can get repetitive but I personally don't mind them, as long as it's not the same user posting every 10 mins, essentially spamming the forum. Somebody not having a grav doesn't bother me either.. I like giving a bit of advice to a newbie if truth be told.

I'd imagine I'll just keep using the site based on the time the comments are posted but flick around the hot topics to see what's going on.

Saturday mornings can remain the same for all I care. No matter what ffs do there will always be an overload of comments then. Its part of the beauty of the site that each weekend you get a direct comparison to how bad things could be before you return to the relative sanctitude of the weekdays. If a gravless, heavens forbid, poster wants my help on a weekday then I will do my best to help as we were all once gravless.

And your right the whole point of HC voting is to elevate certain posts from the underlying noise. Things will keep chugging along "sorting by date" as ever, but once everyone gets in the habit of checking "sorting by rating" certain posts will grow.

I agree with this; Initially, I reckon most will keep it sorted by time, but I think as reps build they will go to posters who are offering the best and most productive advice/opinion and filtering by rating may become a useful tool, especially at busier times. I know this will probably preclude the casual RMTer, so I will probably use it sparingly, as I like a lot of ppl here don't want to exclude them at all, but good discussion is what we really want and becomes much harder to have when the boards fill up. Que sera sera...

I miss Maloney he was a great 5th mid option I wonder who the next one will be. I'm guessing Brady at Hull if he is on set pieces.

Brady could end up playing as a Wing-Back in a 3-5-2 under Bruce, hinders his FPL appeal.

Beasajour was capable of decent returns at Wigan despite playing at wing back at times and he was not on set pieces. I have not watched enough championship football to say how good Brady is but surely you should not rule him out completely ?

Brady is on my watchlist for those reasons. Looking at people like Westwood of Villa who had a nice finish to last season as well. Gunarrson of Cardiff could be another. Seems to nailed on.

What I am probably going to do with my 5th mid this year is find the cheapest nailed on mid and never play him bar injury. I know this will backfire once or twice due to freak scores but I remember I played Sterling too many times in the first half last year because of good fixtures and he failed to deliver. Is this a good idea Tommy ?

I tend to find an attacking rotation to rotate the third sub in and out but I find there is no right or wrong way to play this game.

I agree he seems ideal he does not have the same attacking potential for a winger so I would be reluctant to drop an expensive mid for him regardless of fixture and he is on pens so if he comes in for an injured player there is always hope.

I think he would be far better off at Cardiff than the likes of Spurs. Gametime is vital for young players, how much could he expect at each of those two?

Excellent player, but I'm always cautious about 'attacking' starlets from promoted sides. The premiership is physically and defensively more robust than the Championship. A young winger used to dancing around the bricklayer turned fullback sometimes struggles to cope with the fact that the player now marking may have done the same against Cristiano Ronaldo.

If indeed the price is right and he settles in well, he is a good prospect.

On paper I can’t see the appeal in Aspas FPL wise. Maximum of 6 goals in his first 6 seasons (aged 18-23) with a significant amount of gametime from what I can see. Last two seasons have been good but one was in the second tier. Think he’s a definite ‘wait and see’ as I doubt he’ll get in ahead of Sturridge anyway to start with for the central spot and he will be classified as a striker. 57% shot accuracy will be a PPI-fest if he gets starts though! 🙂

this past year it was based on standings in the leagues AND the council had a certain number of spots we could give out to those we thought would benefit the tournament through their banter and/or pressers and/or contribution. it will likely be the same this next year but we haven't decided anything for sure yet

    Hello everyone,

I just wondered what sort of scouting techniques people used to judge new additions to the premier league?

I quite (un)fortunately support a Championship team so have seen most of the promoted players play. Some of my friends from the European Mainland use their first hand knowledge to judge FPL recruits in much the same way.

I do know of others who use rather more unorthdox approaches to great effect at times. Mini league leader last year brought in Michu solely due to his wikipedia entry and reading his goal ratio. I've had others swear by Football Manager results. And in one rather extreme example, a huge fan of DJ Campbell who ran COM vs COM simulations on FIFA/PES games to see how young Dudley Jr. would perform against the more established premiership sides. He proceeded to keep him for most of the 10/11 season.

Anyone else try anything different? Desperately watch all the La Ligua highlights in the hope of spotting a bargain, and hoping the other half doesn't complain when you've disposed of the entire series of Girls in the process?

Good topic; I often tend to steer clear of newly transferred players as I tend to think more often than not it takes them a while to settle (obv. there are exeptions - Michu, Hazard, etc). As for newly promoted teams it's advice on here I tend to base decisions on

Usually play it safe and try not to take too many new players unless they are proven 'big names'.

One good thing for next season is I think Opta are covering more of the big leagues. The MLS and Brazilian leagues have just started and they already have data for nearly everything, can't see why they wouldn't be covering the remaining leagues in Europe.

The new arrivals always present an interesting problem. Wise heads will often want to allow time to assess them but then, as with Michu, you get the occasional player who just explodes from the off.

I allow myself one gamble normally and then it has to be a player that I've researched enough to be confident on. Rarely does it come down to ability for me - most have that as a given - it's more the likelihood that they will settle into the style and demands of the Premier League. It's difficult to judge that with stats and research, it's more a hunch or gut feeling although pre-season can help a bit. Having said that, Boselli had the stats and the pre-season form (twice)...the rest is history.

Just avoid new players. Michu and Hazard last season were an exception, don't remember any other players who started so well in previous seasons.

Well, they arrived in January which is a little bit different.
And they started worse than Michu and Hazard. Cisse scored only 2 goals in his first 5 games for Newcastle. Siggi was also rather humble in his first games (one assist in his first three games?), definitely avoidable.
It's normally worth waiting for around 5 games to assess how a player settles in the new team.

Zaki in my first season...he was incredible first few weeks. There are always one or two...trick is to find them.

Michu and Hazard came with a good goal scoring record. That's the key....if a player arrives with a poor goal scoring pedigree then its unlikely they are suddenly become Michu over night in a new league.

Same with Lambert and Holt...both goal scorers of some reputation in lower leagues.

Trick is to look out for those with a good track record. Navas for example is a case in point. Here's his club record
        2003–2004 Sevilla B 33 (3)
        2003–2013 Sevilla 284 (23)

That says to me that he requires being left alone for a few games

There's lots of transfer speculation going on as usual over the summer. But which is the Premier League transfer rumour you most want to come true ?

Is it Bent to Newcastle, Rooney to Arsenal or Thiago to Manchester United for example?

Bent to anywhere will get a few people thinking I reckon.

A move to Arsenal for Rooney could be huge and will really impact on our thinking for Walcott and Cazorla. There will be some who dive straight in while I'll likely be wanting to assess the effect that Rooney would have on Arsenal's pattern of play and Fantasy output. I think it would be too simple to say that the likes of Walcott and Cazorla would benefit from his arrival - Rooney would surely be pivotal to both the build-up and execution of Arsenal's attacking play.

I'm also waiting to see if any of the promoted sides take a punt and splash £15 million+ on some decent assets - that would change my pre-season thinking if the likes of Odemwingie come back into play at a budget price.

Thiago to Manchester United and Paulinho to Spurs; exceptional talents and it will be interesting to see how their teams, and the PL as a whole will benefit from them

I struggle to see how either will have a hige effect on FPL sadly, Thiago may 'do a Modric' and assist the assister but he may end up being central to Man Utd's plans for years to come.

If given the freedom, maybe Paulinho would be able to bomb forward and chip in with goals, very much depends on his role within AVB's formation, Sandro's injury and what other players Tottenham sign.

I like the general setting and the storyline, I just wish it was better done. It needs more light and shade; aside from one tiny little sub-plot and the excellent Tyrian it's just relentless bloodshed and shock factor for the sake of it.

It certainly is surprising that its taken off like it has. I don't think anyone could have predicted it, although the overall story arc inheritted from the books means that it should have good longivity, without petering out like so many big shows do. There's a section in GRRM's big short story colection (which is truely excellent) where he talks about how he alsmost sold a Sci-fi series to Fox, and how he'd now be living on his own private island if he'd managed it. Always makes me smile. 🙂

After being a big fan of the books, I enjoy the show very much, but I do wonder how the hell people are managing to keep up with who everyone is and exactly what's going on, so I can certainly see why people wouldn't like it.

And now or a joke that only Adam West will get:

If I remember correctly Liverpool will recieve 25% of the Tom Ince fee, does anyone know what the fee will be? It could help us in getting Mkhitaryan or a centre back.

I don't think it will 'ruin' FPL, as the Ronaldo years still made for interesting seasons. In fact I remember seeing more variety in teams back then as there were quite a few tactics to be deployed and bargains to be had, compared with the (at-times) staggering amount of identical five man midfields this season.

However if Bale decides to keep up his form from last year and RVP's advancing years and history of injuries catch up with him, we may be in the situation you describe.

I think far more players have become game savvy since the Ronaldo years Mathmo.

This is why imo, more similar teams have emerged.

How many spreadsheets did you see in those days, or analysis of positions and rotations?

          Very true.

The angle that I was coming from is that a captain choice, while hugely important, is just one factor among many others.

If an outstanding captain choice emerges (which RVP was at his time at Arsenal and for much of last season too) and the pricing is sound across the board, people will focus their efforts on finding the differentials. An FPL season that provides a single standout option followed by a number of good performers makes more a more interesting one than one where we have a huge gulf between a select few ominipresent big hitters, and the rest who afford little value.

For example ,how many people continued to keep Michu when his form took a downturn? An interesting combination of pricing, past performance and group mentality no doubt meant he was locked in for many teams. Last year at times boiled down to very similar teams battling it out; with the person playing catch up captaining Bale while the person ahead would captain RVP.

How Bale and RVP are priced next season, along with the rest of the big guns, will determine how interesting the season becomes for me.

At Arsenal RVP was injury prone. At United he appears not to be, which someone suggested was down to him not carrying the team as he shared strike dutys with Rooney. Now if Moyes starts playing 4-2-3-1 with United then RVP will surely be injury fecked again?

I don't think he's injury prone anymore. He showed that in his last season at Arsenal. Probably learn't to manage his body better or has just gotten stronger and the constant niggles have disappeared. Not sure his injury problems are/were anything to do with the formation or him carrying a team. Carried Arsenal in his last season there and was fine the whole season.

I'm in the members area and I click on 'Projections' and I get:

Click on the menus in the left sidebar to access the Player Projections by position for the season as a whole and for the opening six Gameweeks.

But there is no menu option on the left for player projections by position. Am I missing something?

We could stand a chance if we sign the players we're in for, keep relatively injury free, keep Suarez or replace adequately and gel quickly but a lot of "ifs'' at the moment but I wouldn't rule it out as we're signing players who are determined to win every game they play.
