Scout Report – Iago Aspas

Having acquired Luis Alberto from Sevilla late last week, Liverpool returned to La Liga to finally complete the signing of Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo on a long-term deal. The 25-year-old passed a medical at the club on Sunday afternoon and, subject to international clearance, will arrive at Anfield for a fee believed to be in the region of £7.7m.

The club’s third signing of the summer, after the Reds also picked up Kolo Toure earlier this month, Aspas is reported to have rejected the likes of Valencia and Swansea, in addition to interest from Spain and Italy, in order to push through the transfer. In an interview with the club’s official website, he went on to say:

“It wasn’t a tough decision at all. I’m really happy to have come to a big club like this one. Having weighed up all my options for this window, a massive club like Liverpool was always my first choice. I’ve not had the chance to talk with the manager at any length just yet but I think that good players can slot into any role and not just one set position.”

The History

A product of the Celta Vigo youth academy, Aspas’ career kicked off in 2006-07 for the club’s reserves. He spent three seasons there, scoring 11 goals in 84 appearances before making his first-team breakthrough towards the end of the 2008-09 campaign, where he notched twice in three appearances for the-then second division-based side.

Installed as the club’s main forward, Aspas proceeded to score nine times in 64 league games over the next couple of seasons before finally finding his feet in 2011/12. Racking up 23 strikes in 35 matches, he ended the campaign as top scorer in the Spanish second division, with his displays helping clinch his side’s promotion. Last term was Aspas’ first in La Liga, which he passed with flying colours – with 12 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances his contribution was key to Celta’s survival, playing a part in 19 of their 37 goals over the course of the campaign. Intriguingly, Aspas’ 57% shot accuracy last term would have been second highest in the Premier League, according to the Liverpool site, with Luis Suarez further down the list on 50%.

The Prospects

Although he was mainly fielded as the lone striker in Celta’s 4-2-3-1 system, Aspas will offer Liverpool plenty versatility should Rodgers persist with his preferred 4-3-3 formation. Predominantly left-footed, the Spaniard can be fielded on either flank as well as through the middle and, in addition to possessing a keen eye for goal, is technically adept and will afford the Reds plenty creativity up top.

Crucially for Rodgers, Aspas is also a dynamic type of player who will slot in seamlessly with the club’s pressing game, hassling and chasing down defenders from the front. Judging by the praise from certain quarters, his arrival looks yet another good bit of business from Rodgers, though ultimately, the future of Luis Suarez is likely to determine just where the new boy is utilised. If Rodgers decides to sell his star man, Aspas could well vie with Daniel Sturridge for the central role, though the pair could also alternate on the right, with Rodgers even looking for an interchanging front three along with Philippe Coutinho during matches.

The rumoured deal for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will also play a part in how we assess the Anfield landscape, with the Armenian’s preference for a role in “the hole” suggesting a move to 4-2-3-1 if he eventually completes his mooted move. Certainly, Rodgers’ desire for increased squad competition this season looks on the cards, though Aspas can surely be expected to knock the likes of Stewart Downing down the pecking order. Although the Liverpool boss sang Alberto’s praises after snapping up the youngster last week, his lack of first-team experience may see him settle for game time from the bench, while the likes of Raheem Sterling and Fabio Borini may have to accept squad roles in the campaign ahead.

Aspas’ price is obviously key across the Fantasy games. Liverpool racked up 71 goals in their first season under Rodgers – the fourth most impressive record in the Premier League – highlighting the potential of their main attacking assets. A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely and if Suarez does indeed depart, the Spaniard could well be earmarked by many managers as a real alternative to Sturridge as part of our front three. Ideally, it would suit Fantasy managers best for Suarez to still be at Merseyside when the player price lists are revealed next month and then leave before the season starts – this would ensure he comes in at a cost in accordance with last term’s displays and allow the Reds’ other forwards a kinder price tag. Suarez is, of course, suspended for Liverpool’s opening six fixtures of the season and while Sturridge is currently nursing an ankle injury, he is expected to be ready well in advance for the opener in a couple of months’ time.

There’s no doubt that Coutinho’s cost is also likely to have a say in our plans, though. If, as expected, he remains classified as a midfielder, a price of around 8.0 to 8.5 may be enough to persuade many to invest in the brilliant Brazilian and free up a vital space for our forward three. Given that he produced nine or more points in three of the last four Gameweeks of 2012/13, the former Inter man may well prove the best value of any Liverpool attacker next time round, though if Aspas turns out to be Suarez’s direct replacement, both Coutinho and Sturridge have already shown it’s not all about marquee signings when assessing Liverpool’s Fantasy prospects.

The fixture list is also in Liverpool’s favour. With home games against Stoke, Southampton and Palace allied with trips to Villa, Swansea and Sunderland, Rodgers’ side have the strongest schedule of any side in the opening seven Gameweeks, according to our season ticker. Goals seem likely, then, but picking the correct Liverpool option is becoming increasingly tricky as Rodgers continues to strengthen his options – there is no denying Aspas is a quality signing but perhaps it’ll be only at the end of August, when the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool’s shopping spree is done, that we’re likely to get a better handle on his Fantasy potential for the season ahead.

Do people think there are any rule changes that could be implemented in FPL to encourage more diversity in teams? Found the Power5 certainly took something from the game last year in particular

I think it's as much a product of what's happening in real life as it's the rules of the game. The power 5 were just the form players, they'd have been popular regardless. But they were only a temporary phenomenon, injuries, form and fixtures all change the landscape.

It's also a case of the game getting the pricing and the position classification right. OOP bargains will be nigh on essential.

Problem was there were 2 affordable strong MF playing up top or in the hole which made Power 5 possible; admittedly there was nothing FPL could do, unless they make it possible to change players positions (similar to the way they can change their club if they move); so anyone who gets on a player early can keep them in their OOP, but latecomers have to get them in their revised positions...I know this would be almost impossible as a player could be scoring different scores for different teams

There are games where the scoring system allocates scores based on the player's actual position on the pitch. ie, is a player is classified as a mid but plays in defence they get the full clean sheet points. This makes it a case of finding reverse OOP picks.

This isn't exactly what you're talking about, and it would need the hole position to be scored as a forward to level the playing field.

Maybe it should be that there are only a certain number of allocations are available for each player, or % or whatever the algorithm may be.

That would reward those of us who get in early and identify a good buy, rather than the bulk just using generics

That would be interesting. Would be a bit weird when a player is at their full allocation - people would sit F5-ing their fingers raw, waiting for someone else to sell him 🙂

The 'Power 5' was just a very much a sheep-like mentality from quite a few on here though, tbh. Some were, seemingly, seriously suggesting that that was their 5-man midfield sorted for the majority of the rest of the season. That was a nonsense suggestion, and within a few weeks it was all change. Form comes, form goes.

Heh, I'd just finished replying to an post on the last page on this very point.

I'd personally liked to see some sensible pricing across the board, so it's impossible to merely load up on all the big hitters. Likewise I would like to see some genuine bargains and mid-price options; all too often last season there was no reason to really hit the mid-price bracket. The very cheap players were only really brought in to make way for an expensive midfield option, cutting out huge swathes of mid-priced players who were rarely worth the money.

There were still a few bargains to be had - some used the likes of Nolan and Lukaku well, I'd just like to see more of them.

Funnily enough, it might also work if the prices were all a lot lower. Games which have higher relative budgets often end up with more variety between teams because you're not forced to all pick the obvious value buys.

      YES! !! (!!!)......!

Sort out he frigging terrible PPI bonus system. As it stands, all it does is reward goal scorers for doing something that they already get points for,l not to mention all th random extra BPs in 0-0 draws.

Back in the day, when I was a lad, BPs were awarded to whoever made the biggest contribution to the game / was called Charlie Adam / had the most noticable hair. Admittedly, those last two weren't ideal, but regardless of whether you believe that it was a better or worse reflection of the match, the system as a whole created a different way to score points.

Rather than just picking players who score goals, and maybe get assists, you could choose to have players who tended to reliably score a few BPs on a regular basis. This led to viable mid-price Essien type midfielders, and an entirely seperate class of mid-price defender such as Dunn who often got a few BPs to augument his other returns. This led to more options and so more diversity.

      RIP the old BP system......

I have my own idea about what could change about the game which I am sure is not shared by most people. I think prices for certain players should be a lot higher so that a power 5 like last year couldn't be possible.

Bale should be close to rvp in price, the likes of mata, hazard, cazorla should be towards 11, and so on. This would make it impossible to have most of the big hitters, forcing u to find those mid-priced gems and would lead to more diversity in the squads.
Don't know if u guys agree.

Completely disagree as everyone would just end up with the same two big options as they would be the only capt options in your team and then everyone would have the same mid priced options too.

The main flaw I see is the locked in value on players bought early meaning teams can't afford to take these players out if there is a remote chance they might want them back. This leads to a general malaise/paralysis in the second half of the season where the bulk of our teams are unchangeable. For me I tend to get very bored with the game post xmas for this reason. All the fun is in the first three months when you can swap players with abandon based on form and fixtures without the threat of losing value.

I've seen a few RMTs pre prices on here over the past few weeks and sone (not all) have aspas in as a midfielder. I'm assuming this is just wishful thinking, we know he can play there but as is shown with mirralas, FPL will play it safe and classify as a forward. Does anyone really think that he'll be down as a midfielder? Or was it just hope?

Hope more than expectation I'd say. He can play in midfield, but those at FPL towers will almost certainly class him as a forward.

Seeing a lot of love for I Higuain round these parts, but i think he's a gamble. Definitely well placed to start up top for an attacking Ars team and Ars obviously have good opening 6, but he tended to miss a lot of chances playing for Real (thinking vs Dortmund this season, vs Barca too). Real don't seem concerned about letting him go in his prime (i.e. 25) either...

    Wait & see for me.

He will surely be in my team in gw1 . Didn't rate him so highly at real since I think benzema is the much better player, but for arsenal he really would be the top striker. If giroud can get 12 goals for arsenal I see no reason why higuain couldn't get 15-18 goals this season. Add the great fixtures we have in the first 6-7 game weeks and it's a no-brainer for me.

Strong rumours that former fantasy favourite Nicky Shorey is off to Brighton. For those playing Championship fantasy football next season the guy's assist potential is huge. Second only to Baines from left back when he got a run in the Reading side last season.

Always funny how manager less teams still sign players. Good signing though if true, although will be very hard to match Bridge's performances of last season 🙁

Also have to find it funny Poyet playing the innocence card, he moans about not being in contact with emails/phone etc on TV yesterday yet he was the one that didn't turn up for his disciplinary hearing... Brighton have just released a statement saying he was 'well aware' as well. Will be interesting when all the details come out after the appeal is over.

I feel I should point out there is marked difference, in reality.

Shorey is almost exclusively a dead-ball kind of assist provider (and and old as rope) whereas Baines has the open play right there for him to bargain with.

      Just buy Julian Speroni.

He is going to have to make 9000 saves next season and, fortunately, he's quite adept at that.

Otherwise: hard to tell who's going to be cheap. There will be some 'suprise' low-balling from FPL (like Carroll 5.5m at Newcastle which always stands out to me) that will make a player become much more interesting that you had previously imagined.

I'm bored so I came up with a few article titles for Paul. I hope to see them appearing soon:

The Guarding of Eden - something about Hazards defensive midfield qualities.

Just One of The Moyes – sleeper article about Nani

Bigger Members – the benefits of membership and using stats to increase FPL ranking.

Robin Banks on Huge Hauls – RvP’s fixture-proof form or RvP in secret Dutch bank heist double life (whichever, I don’t mind)

Go Dig or Go HomeCrowd – the benefits of sorting the comments

Roman Knows – Insider interview with Abramovich about how no one club is bigger than José Mourinho

A Big Messi-take – Tax fraud special about how crazy wages have corrupted today’s high profile footballers.

I am still running windows vista on my laptop. I should really upgrade to windows 8 shouldn't I?

          Dont open itunes 😀

Have you looked at the processor usage in the task manager? I suspect your processor is struggling to cope with both. Clear all unecessary programs from your startup as they will be running in the background for no reason. Then have a look at your power set up, particularly lower the graphics quality of everything.

I was going to suggest that.

Best way to go about clearing unnecessary programs? Go into the Control Panel and remove from there?

There is a list of programs with a tick in the check box and another lot below with no tick.

Most of them are Microsoft, Intel, Dell. Just ;eave all them alone?

Yeah leave them alone. But something like Itunes etc doesnt need to be there. Same with any photo programs you might have etc. You use them so infrequently that they dont need to open themselves every time you start up.

In my opinion, check whether you have the required RAM, processer speed and graphics card speed before upgrading to Windows 8... I think Microsoft has a pre check tool that can be downloaded and run before the upgrade that checks your PC and recommends what all needs to be changed before the upgrade can be done...

Anyone knows when we can expect the mail from FPL regarding the opening of the FPL 2013-14 season? I think they sent out an email last year at the end of June that the new season will kick off soon or something like that...

And how many days before August 17th, 2013 will the FPL open? a month, 15 days... I do not remember exactly when I registered my team last season...

Is anyone going into next season with the view of not getting a player because you personally hate them?

Supporting a non PL team makes choosing my team a little easier than most however I do not think i could bring myself to have Artur Boruc in my team.

Conversely if Cavani joins any team in the PL he will be my GW1 captain.

Not sure I wana pay 8.5-9.5 for aspas.

Reverse OOP (if studge/Suarez plays) with possible rotation with borini, downing etc. In theory, should be cheaper than studge, berba, fletcher, pisse etc

Jon Nurse has been placed on the transfer list. So, if your a fan of a terrible league two club who could do with a useless CF who you can pretend is capable of playing on the wing, go lobby your board!

      J.Nurse.

At school, there were two brothers in my class, Andrew and Peter Nurse. That was OK until you only used their initials and they became:

      A.Nurse and P.Nurse.

Liverpool's making so many signings that it makes hypothetical teams a moving target. Mignolet at Liverpool could be a good shout if the Liverpool back four holds up like the second half of last season.

I'd only want Mignolet if Reina left. He'll be far too expensive for a rotation threat.

    ***Off Topic***

Anyone know anything about injuries and subsequent swelling? I jarred my knee in AstroTurf two weeks ago and it swelled up pretty bad then bruised, etc. Most has subsided now, but still have quite a build up of fluid all around the knee cap and to the side. Pain is mostly gone and can now bend knee about 80-90% of normal. Will the fluid dissipate itself in time or might I need to get it drained?

You may well need to get it drained for it to heal fully.

There's a sac in between the knee joint and the knee cap that is prone to retaining fluid after injury.

As it isn't an ongoing emergency, see your GP. Ring up to check when the next appointment is. If it's not within the well, check for a walk in center.

Did you use RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) after your injury?

There are a huge number of possible knee injuries - and the twisting and turning in football means you can pick up a multitude of twangs from minor niggles to big ole' nasties.

If you're lucky, you'll get a good GP that may check for a variety of issues with your knees, test your range of motion etc. If you're especially lucky you may get a scan on it.

I'd advise going in with an exact account of how the injury came about (twisting, sudden acceleration, collision, stretching etc.) feelings and sensations afterwards, nature of pain, any treatment taken afterwards, and timescales for swelling to subside. Make it as easy for them do diagnose it as possible.

Make that ten minute GP appointment count, many people go in unprepared and rely on the varying competencies/moods/generosity of their medical professional.

      Good luck.

Edited - if it does at any point become an 'emergency' - go to A & E. Most people seem to turn up there first, without realising easier and more time-effective methods are available!

        Hope it gets better soon.
