The Community Round Up

In our latest community round up we look back at the hottest topics over the last week, and find that community members are still in a spin over rotation issues. We also discover which members of the community are ‘dullards’ or ‘mavericks’ and take a look at the community leagues that are currently taking over this summer.

As always, those running community tournaments are urged to email me ahead of the new season at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for inclusion in forthcoming community round-up articles.

The Hottest Topics

The three promoted Premier League sides of Hull, Crystal Palace and Cardiff are likely to produce some budget gems over the course of the 2013/14 season. Thankfully Demi was on hand this week to run the rule over these promoted team’s set piece takers, who may well tempt investment.

Rotation spreadsheets continue to dominate discussion after the Premier League fixture computer did its thing. Among the best rotation posts were Portsmouth Bubblejet‘s look at home and away rotating pairs over the entire season and Yes the Sess!‘s post about the best budget goalkeeping rotation pairs.

Our own In Tommy We Trust has also been looking at three-way and incredibly five- way rotation options. Ubers, the nickname for those who favour an uber cheap defence, have clearly been in their element this week.

Elsewhere the “deadzone”, the name given to the period between midnight and 8am when many of our overseas community members join the discussion, continues to show the daylight dwellers, tucked up in bed, what they are missing out on. Among the most thought provoking discussions in the wee small hours was Triggerlips’s look at what makes a great FPL player and why is it that Mark always seems to beat Granville?

Its been six years since Jose Mourinho last managed in the Premier League, which has prompted Mathmo to take a look at his recent history with Real Madrid in terms of attacking and defensive strategies. This proved to be a fascinating insight into how Chelsea could be set to play next season.

In addition, Teddy has also been helping the community out by searching out next season’s most attacking defenders .

If you’re new to Fantasy Football, Fantasy Premier League or just faced with introducing some novices to your mini-league, you will surely be interested in In Tommy We Trust’s epic post that provided a beginners guide, offering the key strategies for success for newcomers and some timely reminders for more experienced managers.

Lanley Staurel’s research into how last season’s top FPL managers spread their cash across the four positions was another hot topic that proved popular and offered valuable insight.

And finally, we asked in our daily hot topics which members of the community are “dullards”, who like to make safe choice, which are the “mavericks” who take risks and which are “dullardinhos”, a phrase invented by Fantasy Football Scout’s suspension tightrope custodian Anorak to describe a dullard with a dash of flair. In a similar vein Lateriser12 asked whether gut instinct can be trusted?

Community Leagues

The FFS Uefa group’s transfer window simulation reached its Round 2 stage this week with community members organised into Premier League club themed groups bidding for defenders. Manchester United, owned by Count of Monte Hristo emerged triumphant with the acquisition of big name players Thiago Silva and Sergi Ramos. Eboue and Doosra’s management of West Ham continue to focus on flair, with their signing of Eliaqum Mangala taking their opponents by surprise. Round 3 bidding for midfielders has already begun and the deadline is this Saturday, June 29 at 2359 BST. For those looking to join the game, you can sign up here.

Conrad’s Confederation Cup Fantasy Football 2013 competition is edging towards its thrilling conclusion. Conrad has created the game himself and  explains that it is a stripped down version of typical Fantasy football games with 3-4-3 formation only. Ahead of tonight’s first semi-final MB10 is in the lead with 166 points, followed by Patrick Star on 162 points with Conrad back on 153.

I wouldn't mind one in the Scottish but yeah another year wouldn't be too bad. You want Rangers in a stronger position for it to be a better clash.

Yeah it's going to be massive when it does happen. SPL was dead to me last season.

Doubling up with two players, playing the same position, in the same team. A viable option?

I've seen all these beautiful rotation spreadsheets(Thanks every one for the hard work!) that has been posted recently. Most of it relates to defenders. Last season many doubled up on defenders from the same team. Tosey was well known for this tactic and he often trebled up with a keeper from the same team! High risk, high rewards.

What about midfielders and strikers though?

What is everyone's feeling about getting say a Mata AND Hazard for a favorable gameweek? Let's say a DGW like Chelsea had last season gw 1 and might have again this year. I for one went Midf+Torres+Chelsea Def last season as most did I think. Those who owned Lamps(16) + Hazard(21) would have been better off then the Torres(9) owners.

When Arsenal had a DGW last season many of us went Santi(5) + Walcott(7) in gw 33 while Podolski(7) and Giroud(15) did better.

Do you try and "play safe" and get a striker and midfielder from the same team since you think the strikers or midfielders might "share" any attacking points or do you "double up"?

    Interested to hear everyone's comments.

This debate seems like the stunted half-brother of 'coverage'. The points you get from a player don't change depending on whether you've got players from the same team.

I don't see anything wrong with it in principle, as long as both are scoring well. Actual examples of it teams with two simultaneously high-scoring mids or strikers are quite thin on the ground. But if a pair come along then why not?

I'm interested to know if people's team selection is influenced by "I'm not getting Mata, since I have Hazard". Resulting them to opt say for Torres(who always seem to drop us in a dgw!)

It's obviously easy to look back after the season is over and then say why did I not get two midfielders or two strikers in stead of one of each.

When I finished 56th in the world for the month of April some years ago, I had Jenas, Mido and Keane (or was it Lennon, Jenas and Keane? definately and improbably included Jenas anyway), which clearly worked wonders for me! 8)

I think that you should go for the best players whatever their position, at least in the short term. At the start of the season it also allows you to make an either/or choice, starting with two similar players and then ditching the one who isn't performing for someone who is. Starting with Mata and Hazard, then switching one for the Michu-du-jour in GW2 could work very well this season for instance.

      Hulk this man up Jonty!

Interesting points, but dont forget the biggest difference with defenders vs mids and strikers, defenders dont steal points from each other, mids generally steal from each other and strikers generally steal from each other (podolski didnt really play as a striker so it was more like a mid feeding a striker). Its more common to see a midfielder feeding a striker so you generally don't see them hurting each other, actually on the contrary, if you have a mid from a team, you'd want the striker to firing goals left right and center so you get more assists, but when you have a mid from a team that has another mid who keeps getting the assists, thats more likely to be taking away from the assists your mid will be getting, unless it's an extremely high scoring game

Ah, the Tosey trebles. Worked well for him at times and the 18 points always looked impressive in his defence.
I like the attacking dbl up, works well if the team is both in form and has easier fixtures. I prefer the striker/midfield combo to two mids or strikers. Chelsea could be the exception to the rule though.

I'm sure by the time the game kicks off, the real one not the FPL launch. Enough new players will have arrived to confuse me totally, and I'll be happy just to grab anyone who is actually first team choice.

I'm thinking of having Ruddy and Boruc as my keepers and then possibly Shaw in defence as well.

Southampton seem to rotate well with everyone!

I think I got lucky last season as most of my ML rivals doubled up on Stoke defence, which hardly ever came off.

It depends on form and price. I don't necessarily prefer 2 mids, 2 strikers or 1 of each I just go with the best combination at the time.

And you might have 2 other good strikers with good fixtures so you would be less inclined to ditch for another striker from the same club whereas 5 mids leaves you more room to maneuver.

I think there's potential in doubling up. Sometimes I feel the need to spread the risk, some you want to focus the risk. I started a few seasons back with Drogba and Anelka for Chelseas. Part of the thinking is that they share the points. Needs a good back-up plan too though, as they may be competing for pitchtime meaning increased rotation risk.

I like to find two rotations which involve 1 club rotating with 2 other clubs. That way you have even more flexibility if the fixture list is a bit dodgy for the upcoming GW. Stoke have been a good example to implement this in the past

Yep. Following every little update on the situation(Half hourly refresh on redcafe, twitter sources). Hunter (who is always in the know about Madric and Barca stuff and pretty accurate too) was the one who introduced Mazinho (Thiago's dad) to United. Basically, we would never have a chance with Thiago but his release clause was reduced from 90 mil to 18 due to him playing lesser than 60% of the games. Also there is the world cup next year and he's ambitious and wants to be a part of the spain squad. Wont have a chance to do that with Cesc Xavi Busquets and Iniesta at Barca. Basically, he is the most talented of the Barca youngster (possible the most talented since Messi) and the situation is working in our hands. These guys rate him high, very high.

Only one who can spoil the party is Pep. He called Thiago up a month ago and they are sniffing about this because its a steal. But if Thiago wants playing time, United makes more sense vs. Bayern because Bayerns midfield is Bayerns midfield. Moyes and him both are on vacations though reports are that Moyes has spoken to him too. Now its just a case of time and i'm worried a last minute bid from other clubs doesn't hijack this move ala Hazard and Sjneider.

        I want him. BAD!

I think regardless of the amount of money in the transfer it would be a great business for Spurs.

Of course he went on strike. He's a striker.

But Berbilly is right, how many chances did he create? How many assists? How many times did his pure aggression force the change of play?

I'm not saying that he didn't upset a few people and make some waves in the MCI camp. I'm just saying that it's about more than just figures on paper.

I, for one, will miss Carlos The Beast.

Villa got a couple of clean sheets in a short period of time and he had decent goal threat too. Needed a cheap defender so got him in...

I believe his debut in my team was the 8-0 loss to Chelsea 🙁

He lasted 7 weeks or so before I WC'd him out. I think I played him 3 or 4 times for about 3 points total.

I'll speak for my brother, he transferred it Tony Hibbert on a 4pt hit on a double gameweek and I think he got injured in the first game and didn't make the second game, what's worse is that he's a Liverpool fan, I've never let him live it down 😀

For me it has to be a combination of my final day transfers last season Kagawa + Lukaku ---> Dempsey + Hernandez(-4), Lukaku scores a hattrick as well as Kagawa scores, I could've been Top 1k :'( ... I used to live you and now I hate you Dempsey!

      So many candidates...

How about Drenthe, transferred in because he had a DGW and an almighty bandwagon going on here.

Or how about Gibbs last season, transferred in after scores of 6,6,7,9 to start the season. Then gets injured but he's always apparently just a week or two from returning. After 5 weeks in the physioroom I finally move him on, whereupon he comes back and picks up a clean sheet in his first game back.

Honourable mentions to Hangeland, Torres and Graham,

Drenthe was in anticipation of the Everton DGW 2 seasons ago, I needed the cash elsewhere so I transfered him in early and we all know how that ended... not well. Ended up being stuck with him for about 6 GWs.

Taraabt 2 seasons in a row in my GW1 team... needless to say more, out by GW3 for a hit.. in both seasons.

Logged in and saw that Christinas beautiful green post.
Looks like this HC is working just like wanted and it's changing people and their approach to this site (not just you Christina!).

What do you think, is it because

    a) Mark is just genius and he should pretty soon move to bigger forums to move people (politics and religion maybe)

    b) We people are just build that way. No matter if we are 3 years or 40 years, we still need somekind of endorsement & slap on the back from our parents. This same applies to ffs community too?

And actually while writing this I understand that it's not a) OR B), more like a) AND b).

So maybe the real question could be, have YOU changed your approach since this new HC was launched?

Hopefully you don't get me wrong, I think this is great progress as long as people don't get it too seriously - HC needs also those RMT's and "light" conversation imo.

Thanks for listening, back to work now.
