Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Aston Villa and West Brom

We continue our fixture rotation articles for the season ahead by rolling out the fifth in the series this morning. Having looked at what’s on offer from West Ham/Southampton, Norwich/Stoke, Crystal Palace/Hull and Newcastle/Sunderland, we make our way to the midlands to mull over the merits of combining Aston Villa with West Brom.

The Fixtures

Similar to all our previously featured pairs, Villa and the Baggies offer up a perfect home/away rotation right across the 38 Gameweeks. Focussing on the first half of the season, the duo would face one of the previous campaign’s top six on seven occasions at home – thus leaving Fantasy managers with a schedule of 12 strong fixtures (SOT, SWA, NEW, SUN, CPL, CAR, AVL, SUN, NOR, HUL, CPL, SWA).

Villa’s fixtures are the main issue here – Paul Lambert’s side are the cause for concern in five of those seven tricky matches, with Liverpool, Man City, Tottenham, Everton and Man United rolling up to Villa Park in Gameweeks 2, 6, 8 9 and 16 respectively. The Baggies, on the other hand, have just a couple of problematic home ties as Arsenal and City arrive at The Hawthorns in Gameweeks 7 and 14 respectively.

For those eyeing up a Villa-West Brom combination, then, a four-way rotation pattern with Stoke and Norwich would solve the problem over those seven Gameweeks – this would hand us (CPL, NOR, ful, WBA, CAR, CAR, SWA) as alternatives. From a three-way perspective, Southampton offer the best fit in five of those seven (SUN, CPL, SWA, FUL, AVL), though Mauricio Pochettino’s side do have trips to United and Newcastle in Gameweeks 8 and 16 also on their agenda.

Over the second half of the season, the Villa/West Brom combination have just three Gameweeks where both side’s fixtures look an issue – Gameweek 22, 24 and 29. This time, West Ham serve up a perfect alternative to fall back on, with home clashes against Newcastle, Swansea and Hull over those respective matches.

Defence

Villa
While the rotation pattern looks promising, Villa’s inability to keep out their opponents remains a real issue. Lambert’s side registered five clean sheets (four at home, one away) by Gameweek 16 then promptly conceded in every league match onwards – 69 goals against was a record better than only relegated Wigan and Reading, with 73 apiece.

Looking ahead to next term, the upside is that we can expect Villa’s defensive options to remain firmly in the budget bracket. Brad Guzan was fourth overall keeper for save points in 2012/13 and a similar situation looks on the cards, with his heroics between the sticks looking crucial for Lambert’s side – a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely for the US stopper, with Matthew Lowton also set to come in around the same price. The Villa right-back prospered as the season unfolded and produced a goal and three assists in his last eight appearances – if Lambert prevails with the 4-3-3 system rolled out towards the end of the campaign, Lowton should be afforded plenty chance to bomb forward and lend his weight to the midlanders’ attacks. New boy Antonio Luna could also prosper on the opposite side of the back-four and could offer an alternative, should he settle in quickly after moving from Sevilla earlier this summer.

West Brom
Steve Clarke’s side registered five home clean sheets in 2012/13 but after producing four of those in their first six fixtures at the Hawthorns, managed the feat just once more (Gameweek 17) and were an unreliable option in front of their own fans as the season unfolded. The Baggies managed three clean sheets on their travels – all arriving from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Although Ben Foster’s total of 105 points last time out was just two better than Guzan’s, the Baggies stopper missed eight games through injury – as a result, he’s likely to remain around the 5.0 mark when the player lists are rolled out later this month. Three goals, three assists and eight bonus points makes Gareth McAuley the best route into West Brom’s backline – the centre-half finished the season almost 30 points ahead of any other defensive team-mate. There’s a hope that Billy Jones could remain at last term’s initial 4.5 price – the right-back started just 24 matches and with his side conceding more goals and returning less clean sheets under Clarke than the previous season, Jones may be the best value option should his cost stay still. Craig Dawson could also offer value if he can possibly disrupt McAuley’s partnership with Jonas Olsson.

Attacking Options

The Main Men
There’s no doubt that Christian Benteke is the jewel in the crown for Lambert’s side. With 14 goals in the last 18 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the big Belgian grew into the role of lone striker as the season unfolded and battered many a backline into submission by the time Villa secured their safety. The issue, however, is just how much of a price rise can be anticipated across the Fantasy games – Benteke began last season at 6.5 in FPL but after racking up 19 goals and 166 points overall, anything less than 8.5 would be surprising.

Certainly, if Benteke can carry on from where he left off he may well still provide real value but Fantasy managers could instead be swayed by Gabby Agbonlahor’s form over the last few months of the previous season. Fielded on the left of the front three, he produced attacking returns in seven of his last nine appearances – a real source of consistency which harvested six goals, four assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 29 onwards. Alternatively, with Agbonlahor expected to come in around 7.0, Andreas Weimann may provide us with a cheap third forward around 6.0 or less – he looks to have nailed down the role on the right of the front three and chipped in with three goals and a trio of assists in his final 12 fixtures.

In terms of summer arrivals, Aleksandar Tonev could well benefit if Lambert hands him the most advanced central midfield berth behind Benteke in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and would be one to consider if he comes in around 5.5. Nicklas Helenius, on the other hand, looks likely to be afforded game time from the bench as a deputy for Benteke – the new boy is similar in stature to the Belgian and could step into the breach if Benteke decides to move to pastures new.

For the Baggies, James Morrison offered the only decent midfield option last time out. The Scot initially thrived in “the hole” under Clarke, producing three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his first 11 appearances but fell away as the season unfolded, though a 12 point haul against United on the final day of the season highlighted his capabilities. Having racked up 133 points last time out, a slight rise to 6.0 to 6.5 is likely, though Morrison’s inconsistency is something of a worry – he produced attacking returns in just 10 of his 35 appearances and managed just three assists between Gameweek 13 and 31. It’s little wonder, then, that Steve Clarke has been linked with the likes of Scott Sinclair, Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou as he looks to bolster his attacking options in midfield.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea gives Clarke a real headache for the season ahead. As mentioned in yesterday’s Window Wish List article, a move for Demba Ba could be on the cards – Clarke’s ties with his former club and close affinity with Jose Mourinho could help, while Ba’s lack of impact at the Bridge, allied with the return of Lukaku and potential acquisition of Edinson Cavani, should force him down the pecking order for the lone forward role. At present, then, we only have Shane Long to consider but that will surely change over the next few weeks as the Baggies boss scours the market in order to build upon last season’s promising eighth place finish. Indeed, Clarke will be hoping his former Chelsea ties stand him in good stead in the summer transfer market – both Nicolas Anelka and Franco Di Santo have also been linked with a possible move to the Hawthorns earlier today.

I expect WBA to be overpriced and I'm steering clear of Villa initially unless the price is rock bottom - I just don't trust Lambert to sort the defence out. Not for me thank you 🙂

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

A good understanding of rotation can be vital to helping get cheap options in defence and goalkeeping positions?

Where are you on the scale of rotation when it comes to defensive strategy and why?

    - Just a rotating pair of budget defenders
    - A rotating trio to free up more funds
    - An Uber back line- a fantasy manager with an entire back line of rotating budget options

And of the rotating team options which are the ones that most appeal?

Rotating keepers always and sometimes 2 cheap rotating defenders.

Propsed triple defence rotation with Stoke/West Ham before the start of last season, didn't go through with it. The time may be right for a triple Nor/Sot rotation plus one defender to play every game.

With the big-hitting mids and strikers on offer this year, and the growing body of evidence that there just isn't enough return on investment for defenders in the FPL format, I'm pretty much settled on an Uber backline, at least until Jan WC

We don't know for certain, no, but we're not idiots and FPL's pricing seems reasonably predictable, year on year. We can make educated guesses to within a million or so with a degree of confidence.

And many people think that the following players stand a good chance of being very strong scorers this season:

          - Bale
          - RVP
          - Sturridge/Suarez
          - Aguero
          - Walcott
          - Higuain
          - Kagawa
          - Coutinho
          - Higuain*
          - Cavani*
          - Hazard
          - Mata

But we had the same thing last year and FPL compensated by making most people priced a bit lower than expected - when there's a plethora of options available it makes sense to them to make quite a few of them available within your original budget to attract your casual player as much as anything.

Perhaps I'm not remembering it well but I don't feel like there were as many big options last year. The transfer market was fairly dull and of the mids, only Silva and Bale had hit big hitter points the previous season.

And the point about defender value still stands. In the FPL format, £1 million is better spent up front than in defence.

                * And Dempsey

As I say, I might be remembering it wrong. It might be simply the promise of Higuain and Cavani that's skewing my judgement of big-hitterness this year, but I don't think so.

I think you're right. There were 5 mids this year who did better than silva in 11/12 iirc and Silva was 10 last year. 10 minimum for Caz, Haz, Wally and Mata and Bale will be at least 11.5

Doesn't look that uber to me if I'm honest.

        Mignolet will be 5.5 minimum.
McAuley will be 5.0 minimum but quite possibly 5.5.
Elmo will either be an expensive Hull defender (4.5/5.0?) or, more likely, a midfielder.
        Shaw will hopefully be 4.5.
Should get a Newcastle defender for 4.5.
A nailed on Norwich defender will likely be 5.0.

For now I'm planning to get one Chelsea defender and jump on the WHM+SOT or/and NOR+STK rotation for the remaining 2 spots in my defense.
Chelsea with Mourinho will provide us with plenty of clean sheets, I think. I really hope Azp will be a cheap way to Chelsea backline.

It will really depend on prices of course, but here is an early projection of my defence
      Azp
      1 Norwich (RMartin/Turner)
1 Stoke (hope Pieters will come at ~4.5)
      1 WestHam (Demel/O'Brian)
      1 Southhampton (Shaw/Clyne)

I think GW1 I'll have at least one pricier defender (Chelsea) and then either two cheap rotating pairs or a solid second defender and a rotating three. I'm more inclined to go for the first option as it stands but without prices it's hard to say. I want to go nice and cheap so my rotating defenders will be 4.0 or 4.5 each. 5.0 becomes too pricey to rotate.

Rotating keepers is the bedrock of my fantasy strategy, based on ease of opponents more than home/away.

I usually start the season with a rotating defender strategy until some standout options emerge in terms of resolute defences and attacking defenders.

Previously it's been one big hitter in defence and then 2 to play from 4. I also try to give myself an option of 3 from 4 when my big hitter has a tough fixture.

This year I'm thinking of doing an uber cheap 3 from 5 budget rotation, in order to free up cash for midfielders and forwards and because there's been little consistency in returns from big hitter defenders.

My tatic last season was to bring in one heavy hitting defender- (Baines for most the season for example, however in GW1 I went with Ashley Cole with the DGW) then the other 6 defenders (including Keepers) where rotating. To keep costs down, I did it with the newly promoted clubs.

So last season originally I went with Federici from Rading as the Goalie (I picked him because of the DGW and wouldn't have to take a points hit to get shut of him) with Vorm from Swansea, McCarthy or West Ham to rotate with Shawcross from Stoke, and Clyne from Southampton to rotate with Fabio of QPR.

This season I will alter slightly as two of the newly promoted clubs are rotating together (Hull and Palace).

Under the assumption that Villa and Chelsea do indeed have a double in GW1, I will likely pick a Chelsea player again as my heavy hitter.

For GK's it will be Foster and Guzan (Due to DGW). For defenders a Hull and Palace defender, and a Swansea and Cardiff defender. Funds permitting which).

Alright so i want to get into a formations & tactics discussion (sorry this is going to be long but i need to get it out of my system lol)

Bayern was quite shocking this season in the way they beat Barca because even though other teams including Madrid have beaten Barca recently, it was about how uncomfortable Barca looked and how easily Bayern were carving out chances. Then Brazil basically did the same thing to Spain which had me thinking (and extremely worried as a Barca fan) that is isn't because Barca and Spain were just playing badly in those games....

So i'm not talking about when Barca would be playing against a small team that's playing defensively and trying to hit Barca on the counters (not how Celtic played vs. Barca last season), i'm talking about a style of play like Bayern, where they looked physically superior to Barca and while they hit Barca with quick attacks, they weren't exactly a defensive team, so this is about the non-defensive teams playing against a Barca or Spain. But the truth is, teams have tried this before vs Spain and Barcelona, so why was it so deadly this season?

Well Barca and Spain are both playing differently compared to a while back (Spain before Alonso was injured, and Barca before Abidal was out). So the way i see it is that there's 2 ways to defend against counter attacks, again this is about playing against a relatively big team which wouldn't be too defensive; for Barca, they had Alves bombing forward to help the attack like he is now but what would happen is that Pique Puyol and Abidal all become center backs and it becomes a 3-man defense with Busquets (or Toure before him) standing infront of them and this way, you can deal with the threat of counters, whereas now, while Alba is much more aware defensively than Alves, they're both attacking full backs and they leave spaces behind which makes it very easy for a big team to use counters to hurt Barca. And even when Alves or Alba would sit back and allow the other to bomb forward, it still doesn't feel right because they aren't as aware in terms of positioning when they're playing as a 3rd center back, so you would often see someone ghost in behind Alves and score (and you might say well then Alves and Alba should both sit back and defend but that won't work because of how teams defend against Barca, and also because the wingers are supposed to cut in more often while the full backs provide the width, at least thats generally the case on one of the wings). Spain would combat this issue by playing 2 defensive midfielders so even when 1 or both of the full backs are attacking, the defensive mids can tuck in and form a 4-man defense that consists of 4 players capable of playing at center back (because defensive mids are generally more adept at playing at center back than full backs). You can also see the current Brazil playing this way, Alves and Marcelo are both attacking full backs but Gustavo and Paulinho were covering brilliantly so you couldn't see Spain really hurting Brazil with a quick attack (barring the chance for Pedro where Marcelo, Alves, and Paulinho were caught high up the pitch but that's more because of individual errors than the formation/tactics) and Bayern also played that way, Lahm and Alaba the attacking full backs, and Schweinsteiger & Martinez defensive mids. And the beauty of using this system is that you can instruct the full backs to be less offensive and then you have a strong 4-man unit with 2 defensive mids shielding them which made Barca and Spain look lost against them while looking threatened on the counters when their full backs were forced to attack to try to carve out a chance, while having the full backs be more offensive when they're in need of a goal without ignoring the defense, whereas the most you can change with the 4-3-3 Barca and Spain were playing is having the 4-man unit stay back with only 1 defensive mid shielding them, that 1 extra player makes the world of difference because it gives the wingers enough time to track back and help the defense. When it comes to counter attacks, it's all about being able to have enough players in defensive positions. However, i'd like to mention that i think Bayern and Brazil would both suffer against the smaller teams that plan to play defensively because the 2 defensive mids won't be necessary, and would only slow them down (which will be related to my point at the end about how this may impact the premier league next season).

I really hope Vilanova has been paying attention because something needs to change with Barca's system to deal with teams that play like that, he either needs to consider playing Xavi and Busquets as defensive mids in the big games and instruct Alves and Alba to be less offensive, or Alves would need to be replaced by a more defensive right back who is capable of playing at center back, i know Del Bosque will revert to 2 defensive mids for the world cup (whether its going to be Martinez or Alonso is going to be playing with Busquets is up for debate really or possibly pull Xavi to defensive mid like i suggested for Barca) so what worries me is how Barca will deal with those teams next season

In case anyone is wondering how this could be relevant to fantasy football or the premier league, well i think the importance of 2 defensive midfielders is now probably on every manager's mind, look at how much Del Bosque was criticized for playing with 2 defensive midfielders in the past tournaments but it turned out to make complete sense and i doubt any manager would be criticized for using 2 defensive mids now, and this could go both ways, either that the games become fast-paced in a sort of Dortmund - Bayern match or when a big team (for example United) plays against a small team (lets say Wigan, sorry i had to choose someone), we might see Wigan playing defensively and United incapable of breaking them down as easily because of 2 static defensive midfielders that wouldn't be necessary in such a game. Now in this case, Rafael and Evra/Baines are offensive full backs so its unlikely to hurt United very much if they used 2 defensive mids, which they kind of do now in a different way (which is probably why Ferguson had such attack-minded full backs) but ya, even then United could struggle because Carrick and whoever plays next to him (assuming he's a defensive mid) wouldn't be helping the attack very much when the other team is defending with 6, 7, or 8 players (a player like Carrick relied on the quick attacks United were known for where the opposition didn't have too many players defending and he could pick out the pass that would keep United moving very quickly and score before the opposition can recover) but that's why signing Thiago or Fabregas makes complete sense for United at the moment, they would be able to play in that second defensive midfield role with the ability to help the attack and shield the defense. I know a lot of teams have been using the 2 defensive mids system such as Moyes and Fergie last season, but i can see a bigger emphasis on this system next season (there always seems to be the tendency to jump to the playing style that did best the season before, you can even see how defensive teams were in the world cup after Inter Milan won the Champions League that way)

So ya, any thoughts on anything i mentioned or if you think it would impact the premier league?

I've always been a firm believer of two central holding men, allowing the full backs to bomb forward. Its what I always play in football manager 🙂

Spurs tried to adopt this last year but where they tended to fail with teams shutting them out for most of the game was that they needed a distributor with creativity in the two holding men. That's why they have gone and got Paulinho imo.

It's nothing new though, Rafa adopted this style at Liverpool with Mascherano anchoring and Alonso distributing

It's not a new system, i know that, but with people jumping on the 4-3-3 after Barca was so successful with it, Bayern killed them last season but it wasn't using the same tactics that let Barca do so well from 2008 till 2011, the small changes in personnel made a world of difference, which was what i was trying to point out.... I did re-post my comment so you could delete this one if you'd like

He would have appeared on the list for the 2011/12 season too. In his case a low goal conversion ratio seems to be a trait rather than an indication of imminent regression to the mean.

Not quite as low, but still pretty derisory.

2011/12 stats: 1 goal from 22 attempts, so a goal conversion of 4.5% is still lower than everyone else on your list for 2012/13.

Very useful, of course you need to know which players won't turn these stats into points. Some players are always statistically good, but their end product lacks the quality to get the assists/goals suggested. Players like GJ always seem to be high on the explosion imminent table.

Super Oscar is nicely played on there.

If the stats you're looking at are not telling you what you know to be true, you're probably focusing on the wrong stats.

Here's an interesting article, which isn't specifically about Taarabt, but about half way down the page it shows a shots map for him from the 2011/12 season which explains at a glance why he was not a viable FPL prospect.

It's actually pretty reflective of him as a player (in my opinion). Flashy but flatters to deceive.

Not a criticism of your tables by the way, the stats are what they are, I actually like the fact that I need to apply my own layer of 'real life' factors before the table is useful to me - means I still feel like the conclusions are my own (even though you've basically spoon fed them to me 🙂 )

To me it feels like a season-long trend doesn't sounds like a good definition of an imminent explosion. Seems more like a definition of a characteristic. I'd be inclined to say that this is a table of players to avoid; they're statistically proven* to always promise more than they deliver.

It's all about conversion rate so I wouldn't have thought position would have that much effect.

And it's not down to having shots from distance, as opposed to shots in the box. He actually had fewer shots in the box this season than last. That's just weird, actually.

No, more shots in the box this season which would account for higher conversion.

Alright this is a re-post with some changes to make it read-able:

[Look at the very bottom if you're only interested in how this may affect the premier league teams and FF]

Alright so i want to get into a formations & tactics discussion (sorry this is going to be long but i need to get it out of my system lol)

Bayern and Brazil shocked people with the way they beat Barca and Spain this season because while others have beaten them before, it was about how uncomfortable they looked and how easily Bayern and Brazil were carving out chances.

So i'm not talking about when Barca would be playing against a very defensive team, i'm talking about a style of play like Bayern, where they looked physically superior to Barca and contained them very well while hitting them with quick attacks.

And even when Alves or Alba would sit back and allow the other to bomb forward, it still doesn't feel right because they aren't as aware in terms of positioning when they're playing as a 3rd center back, so you would often see someone ghost in behind Alves and score.

And the beauty of using this system is that you can instruct the full backs to be less offensive and then you have a strong 4-man unit with 2 defensive mids shielding them which made Barca and Spain look lost against them while looking threatened on the counters when their full backs were forced to attack to try to carve out a chance, while having the full backs be more offensive when they're in need of a goal without ignoring the defense.

In case anyone is wondering how this could be relevant to fantasy football or the premier league, well i think the importance of 2 defensive midfielders is now probably on every manager's mind, look at how much Del Bosque was criticized for playing with 2 defensive midfielders in the past tournaments but it turned out to make complete sense and i doubt any manager would be criticized for using 2 defensive mids now, and this could go both ways, either that the games become fast-paced in a sort of Dortmund - Bayern match or a case of teams being incapable of breaking each other down because of 2 static defensive midfielders.

I know a lot of teams have been using the 2 defensive mids system such as Moyes and Fergie last season (while Fergie played with 2 defensive mids, he had 2 very attacking full backs, which is the only way to combat the effects it can have on your attack when you're playing against a defensive team) but i can see a bigger emphasis on this system next season (there always seems to be the tendency to jump to the playing style that did best the season before, you can even see how defensive teams were in the world cup after Inter Milan won the Champions League that way). So if managers start jumping on this, we could have a serious effect on the number of goals scored....

        Conclusion (in fantasy terms):

I expect more managers to adopt the formations and tactics of Bayern and Brazil which means we either see a central midfield player become a less attractive fantasy prospect or potentially on the bench to accommodate for a defensive midfielder. Beyond that, i can also see results of games being more unpredictable, there's a chance it becomes and even faster paced game or a very slow one.

The point i was trying to make though is that the 4-3-3 isn't dead, it was more due to wrong personnel for Spain and Barca so i was just trying to point that out, but i guess my interest in just having a discussion about formations and tactics was out of place

Here's one possible outcome for FPL - more assists from full-backs.
Alves picked up his least assists since joining Barca last year whilst Lahm picked up his most (by a distance) for Bayern.

CS potential doesn't really matter - it's points potential and both were reasonably up there for points. I think you might be right on the price front though.

As defenders aren't as strong value as mids/forwards people are making the assumption that going 'uber' (nonsensical term but it seems to have stuck 🙁 ) in defence will will increase their net output.

I don't think it's as black and white as that. We are restricted by the fact that we have to play 3 defenders, and we have to bench an attacker. This restriction means that this technique would restrict at least 36% of your team to budget players. (4/11) Is pumping vast amount of funds into an attacking slot to increase your points output slightly worth making this sacrifice? There is a trade-off to be found here.

Is there a point of saturation in attack when spending any further money on upgrading an attacker gives you a smaller pts increase than spending that money in defence? I believe there is, and if a more more competent being has done some analysis on this I'd love to read it. Baa.

Not sure that can be fully answered without crunching a whole load of numbers, but here's a back of a fag packet view using last season's stats:

      Top 5 forwards priced £9.5m+ = average 16.9 points per £
Top 5 forwards priced £7.5-£9m = average 16.7 points per £ (so pretty similar to the elites)

      Top 5 defenders priced £6.5m+ = average 21.4 points per £
Top 5 defenders priced £5.5-£6m = average 20.6 points per £ (also pretty similar to the elites)

So if you shift your budget by downgrading from elite forwards to the next rung down and by upgrading from premium defenders to elite defenders, then yes the above figures suggest there may be some gains to be had.

There will be many other considerations though - for starters, by doing this you might be taking out a viable captaincy option.

Right, after the season EI data was questioned for relevance, I decided to look at the 2011/12. Firstly I wanted to see if there were any repeat offenders making there stats actually their norm and secondly was there any players that hit it off big time last season. As you can see, there was 1 repeat offender (Osman) and one that really kick on last season. It also highlighted a few options that performed early on last season

I believe you can use the season EI stats to find the next big hitter. I know which player i'm considering after seeing the stats 😉

You may be right. For comparison, he was 2 from 25 in 10/11 and 3 from 28 in 09/10. So a bit more reasonable but not spectacular.

The majority of his shots are very speculative ones from 25 yards, so it's no surprise his conversion is atrocious. He was ridiculously unlucky this season though. 25 shots in the box should get you more than 1 goal, no matter how bad you are.

Maybe, but isn't the point that the previous season he was 1 from 22, last season he was 1 from 25. That starts to look more like a trend than bad luck.
