Scout Reports

Scout Report – Andreas Cornelius

Cardiff City made their first foray into the summer transfer window earlier this week by snapping up Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen for a reported club record fee of £8.5m.

The 20-year-old – who has previously been linked with Everton and Stoke – arrives on a five-year deal and, having completed his medical on Monday morning, will link up with the Bluebirds first-team squad after a short vacation.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Cornelius went on to say:

“This is a dream come true for me. I’ve been given a great opportunity and this is a very exciting project that’s taking place at Cardiff City. I’m very happy to be here and to be playing for this club in the Premier League. There were opportunities for me this summer and I had to think about what was the right thing to do, the correct step for me to take in terms of my career. I was impressed by what the club is trying to do, the fact it has reached the Premier League and that it has a passionate fan base supporting it.”

The History

Handed his first-team debut in April last year, Cornelius made a couple of brief sub appearances before starting the 2012/13 season as a first-team regular. The six foot four forward – who is nicknamed “The Danish Tank” – quickly demonstrated his target man potential and over the course of his first full season, racked up 18 goals and five assists in just 34 appearances. Cornelius’ displays helped Copenhagen power their way to the title and earned him the club’s Player of the Year award. He has represented his country at Under 18, 19 and 21 level a total of 22 times, finding the net on six occasions, and has notched once in seven appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

As discussed in last month’s article on Cardiff’s title-winning season, Mackay’s preference for a target man was a real feature of his side’s play. Heidar Helguson was mainly utilised in the role last time out and subsequently ended up the Welsh outfit’s top scorer with nine goals and six assists over 39 appearances but with the former QPR man moving on and Mackay clearly not convinced by Rude Gestede, Cornelius is set to fill the space vacated by Helguson’s departure.

Whether as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 or as part of a two-man frontline in a 4-4-2, Cornelius is likely to be assured game time, then, with the Bluebirds looking to supply him with crosses aplenty from the flanks. While the diminutive Fraizer Campbell impressed with seven goals in 12 appearances since moving to the club in January, he may struggle to mirror Cornelius’ game time on the road, with Mackay’s somewhat tentative tactics likely to see Cardiff start many away games with one up top and perhaps move to a front pairing later on in matches. Craig Bellamy also offers an option through the middle in a front two but with his pace and tenacity on the flank a key part of Mackay’s 4-5-1 formation, his appeal is somewhat diminished.

Given that Cardiff were hardly prolific last term (72 goals in total, with 37 at home and 35 away), their chief attacking assets seem likely to be kindly priced across the Fantasy games. A cost of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for Cornelius looks about right but with just one full season of football under his belt, many will be sceptical as to whether he can mirror last term’s exploits.

The Dane not only possesses the work-rate, power and physique to complement Mackay’s approach, he is also a tricky customer on the ground for someone of his size – with home games against City, Everton and Spurs, in addition to trips to West Ham and Fulham in the first six Gameweeks, though, the opening schedule looks enough to deter any initial suitors. With only an away day at fellow new boys Hull over that spell seeming favourable, Fantasy managers may well be prepared to hold fire and allow Cornelius time to settle before deciding whether he’s worth the investment as a budget third forward for the season ahead.

What do you think about playing 5 cheap rotating defenders? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this strategy? I am not experienced in playing fantasy games, so I wonder if it would work.

For example: Nor, Sot, Hul, Wba and New rotation.

    1st fixture: SOT, wba, EVE
    2: SUN, NOR, WHU, hul
    3: SOT, SWA, FUL, nor
    4: WHU, CAR, ful, avl
    5: AVL, SUN, HUL
    6: sto, CPL, WHU
    7: SWA, AVL, car

    Hull -> stoke

    8: WBA, LIV, sto
    9: CAR, FUL, sun
    10: sto, SOT, CPL
    11: WHU, HUL, swa
    12: SUN, AVL, NOR
    13:CPL, WBA, new
    14:AVL, CAR, swa

    Southampton -> Fulham

    15: AVL, NOR, wba
    16: SWA, SOT, hul, car
    17: AVL, HUL, CPL, sun
    18: FUL, STO, nor

For me it looks good, but is it worth a try? Sorry in advance for my bad english 🙂
    Cheers

i'm not sure that there are any "strengths" to this strategy, apart from freeing up cash for attacking positions.

however, T3T commented on the previous post that you actually get more points per pound from mid-high priced defenders than you do from premium priced attackers. though i didn't do the analysis myself, T3T's stato-status seems renowned around these parts so i tend to agree.

of the sides you mention in GW1-7, only norwich seem likely to generate much in the way of CS. in GW8-18 stoke and nor.

unless you're picking defenders with good attacking potential from the other sides (which won't be the ubers within those defenses, more likely to be 4.5-5.0), you're likely to be missing out on a shedload of points.

i'm planning to spend under 40 on my def/gk (between 37 and 40) and try to have 1 captaincy option in my fwd line and 2 in my mid line, with 2nd-tier attackers filling out the balance.

He'll either be a bargain or a Boselli - I don't know which, but I'm erring on the side of caution at the moment and only a bargain price will make me consider him for GW1 - we can always buy him if he does turn out to be quite good.

he won't be a boselli nor a Benteke/Lukaku type like last season. He'll probably struggle to reach the 10-12 goal mark and you need more then that from your 3rd striker

Norwich will be looking to push on from last season, supposedly several new signings in the works, likely to be more attacking, I think most supporters are pretty optimistic about the coming season. (Feeling like defence has been sorted and goals will now be added to that). He's the record signing and would be a big surprise if he didn't start every game.

not sure this will be totally convincing (haven't convinced myself, but getting there):

RvW, at 1.86m is a tall one (not crouch tall, but tall enough), and has headed in his fair share of goals.

norwich had the 5th highest rate of successful crosses in the 2012-13 FPL.

so he may have a fair amount of joy from heading in goals. where the stats DON'T support his success is that the consensus is that he's not the most athletic of players but his great finishing instincts. therefore, he'd need to be fed a steady stream of chances in the box by his teammates in order to prosper. norwich were among the worst teams in FPL last year for creating chances and levels of possession in the final 3rd.

so, my guess is that he'll be relying on crosses and penos (assuming he's on them, but with his record i imagine he would be) for the bulk of his goals. given norwich's low levels of possession in the final 3rd, however, it's questionable how many peno chances he'd face.

Personally I'm not going to have RVP or Bale from the start this season they'll cost way too much to be able to build a squad. Last season there was alot of options and alot more scorers then previous seasons. Prior to last season you had to have these players in your team etc RVP arsenal era, StevieG/Lamps era and the Ronaldo era to even be close to winning.

This coming season will be like last yrs with even more options which to me makes it even more exciting and harder to win since for once everyone won't have the same team.

For me the Squad is the most important and not to just have a starting 11, Value comes after this because it lets you have a very strong team earlier then what others can afford. if you can manage only using 15 transfer whole season without WC then you'll be close to winning it.

Just as a counterpoint, people who went without RVP last year had to work verrry hard to even compete with those who did. And I'm not sure how you quantify "more options" of scorers this season vs. other seasons ...

Captain Hindsight always allows one to pick out cheaper, high-scoring players ... but the point is the expensive players are, in part, expensive because they are consistently good. I don't see any reason for that to change this year.

That said, I have no plans for Bale this year, either. But that isn't me bucking the trend, I just don't see Bale as that sort of caliber of player. [*ducks head*]

King eric what you say about those who went without rvp struggling at the start last season is patently wrong. Nobody in the top 10 and most of the top 100 didn't have rvp for ages. It wasn't until almost xmas or after that those with rvp started to catch up.

from jan onwards I didn't have RVP and it worked out. Benteke outscored him yet no one had him.

Their will be more options for sure, Silva and Aguero for a start, Chelsea new striker same with Arsenal and Spurs I haven't even mentioned the rest of the teams that have made impressive buys so far.

Nearly all those players that scored well last yr will be above 9 so you wont be able to fit them in if you have RVP and Bale. Having a really cheap defense well has never worked I still don't know why people persist with that.

As for Bale you have to have him sometime during the season in your team otherwise you'll miss stretches were he scores alot of games in a row, don't think he's that important early on until he hits that form.

        Evening, this is from BBC:

Muniesa, 21, was part of the squad that won the European Under-21 Championship in June, and joins on a four-year deal

Muniesa made his La Liga debut with Barca as a 17-year-old and was an unused substitute for the Champions League final success over Manchester United in 2009.

The 21-year-old, who can operate at left-back or in the heart of defence, was more recently a fixture in the Barcelona B team, although Stoke still had to fend off interest for Muniesa in Spain before completing the deal

This is the reason I don't like the Stoke defense this coming season, they played slightly more open football last yr and the usual cleanies weren't happening against weaker teams in around them. They're going to play even more open now but just don't have the players to play like that yet so it will lead to even more goals conceded.

all those teams also had better outfield players to help the defense and Stoke don't have that unless they get better midfielders but they spent alot last yr so I'm not sure if it will happen again but both those signings are quite impressive for Stoke.

Some stats on allan mcgregor hull's new gk.

Last season (only season in turkey) he had 5 cs in 26 games for besiktas. His replacement played 8 games and had 3 cs.

Besiktas had 8 cs in 2012/2013 finishing 3rd in the league but joint 12th out of 17 teams for goals against. Mcgregor conceded 39 goals in his 26 games compared to the replacement gk conceding 10 in 8 games.

Besiktas record the year before mcgregor signed was 39 conceded (joint 6th best in league) with 8 cs.

What does the above tell us? Without knowing if their were mitigating circumstances you would have to think he made their defence worse and was either dropped or got injured whereupon his replacement did far better than him. As I say there could be mitigating circumstances and at hull he should get plenty of save pts so is still a potential signing for me but I wanted to do a little research to see how well he actually did.

I didn't bother looking at his rangers record as the spl is too weak to place any store in it imo.

Is the Turkish league really any stronger than the SPL? I think I'd want more stats before I read too much into those goals conceded and clean sheets kept figures such as comparisons between saves made by the two keepers. I'm not going to go looking for them because I just think Turkish League to EPL is such a jump the stats wouldn't be worth the time it would take to get them. If he's priced at 4.0, rotates well and their aren't better options I'll still consider him.

The SPL as it was when McGregor was playing in it? I can onpy judge the Turkish sides based on what I've seen of them in Europe really but with those zides being the best the country has to offer - it would seem they also have a pretty weak league. I know they didn't help themselves with their rulings on quotas of non-Turkish players which didn't do them any favours.

Based on what I have seen of turkish teams in europe it looks light years ahead of spl but I do get where you are coming from re the stats but all we have to go on is that small sample size. We are lucky that he was out of the team for 8 games so we could have a proper comparison really.

Yeah, that's the problem with players that go to an obscure league and then come to tbe EPL from an FPL point of view. Would be good if we'd previously had keepers come to EPL from Turkey to make comparisons between really. I might steer clear because the stats certainly don't make a strong case for him. Speroni might be a better bet at a similar price.

Sturridge will start for pool and be cheaper then Rooney. Carroll might come good but he's not worth his price and there's better options. Navas who knows but I think he be around 8 which is alot for a guy who couldn't even score last yr for that price you'll want someone that you know will produce you'll be able to get Silva for around that.

good point, my only concern for the above two is injury. They were both injured for large parts of the season but when they are fit then they average good scores and are OOP

      Ben Arfa

Football Manager says he is a talent...;)

In all seriousness, id prefer Barfa when he is fit, but i'm worried about Newcastle under the current regime. A shame, as they have allot of talent there.

Mirallas. I don't like the situation at Newcastle at all.

MD gone, manager undermined, Cisse doesn't want to wear the shirt due to the new Sponsors.
      It all smacks of implosion.

Newcastle do look in trouble but Ben Arfa can take the whole team on himself and score. Was hoping that Pardew would get the sack after an awful season but he lives on. We have a very talented team full of internationals in each position, just a shame that Pardosaurous doesn't know how to play the modern game

Well, pre-season friendlies get underway this weekend.

Will we witness an array of new blooming talent for the season ahead, or the usual false dawn of over-rated players trouncing the likes of Torquay at home. Only to fall apart when faced with their premier league opponents?

Surely we'll get a few bargain price "Michus" among them?

Pre-Season is so difficult to judge by, the stats from previous seasons are usually a better indicator although the Boselli's are a good laugh. I bought Carroll for 10m two seasons ago based on his pre-season, thankfully we were all given a WC in GW2

      looking forward to the friendlies.

really hope i can turn to the site for some team stats coming out of the matches. player stats are really red herring as we've seen over and over in the past. but big chances conceded, shots in the box conceded (for team defenses) will be fantastic indicators regardless of opposition. even if the sunday park teams that serve as opposition fail to capitalize, we know that the premier league sides won't.

the offensive side is much harder to figure out. with weak opposition, most teams' key attacking stats (touches - final 3rd, shots on target, successful passes - final 3rd) beefed up as a result.

Yeah I was pretty amazed. Although I did discover all the space that game updates take up, not saved games but the updates - colossal. I have the 120Gb PS3 and it was nearly full, most of it on these updates.

Luckily in Japan my internet is fast as f**k so shouldn't take too long to download 🙂

you purchase the games on psn for free. you can then download them and play them anytime as long as you are a member. If you renew your membership even after a year you'll get those games available to play
