Scout Report – Allan McGregor

Steve Bruce moved to solve Hull City’s goalkeeping dilemma earlier this week with the acquisition of Allan McGregor from Turkish side Besiktas on a three-year deal. The 31-year-old makes his way to the KC Stadium for an undisclosed fee and his arrival continues the recent spending spree which has also brought Curtis Davies and Ahmed Elmohamady to the club:

With last season’s number one David Stockdale now back at parent club Fulham, Bruce has been desperately scouring the market for a first-choice stopper. Although the Tigers have been linked with the likes of Kaspar Schmeichel and former Wigan man Chris Kirkland during the summer, McGregor admitted to the club’s official website that he’s been aware of a possible move for a number of weeks now:

“I got a call a while ago about the interest from Hull City and things progressed from there. Holidays stalled things a little bit, as they do at this time of year, but everything is done now and I’m just really happy to be here. I kept an eye on what was going on back here while I was playing in Turkey and I actually watched the last few minutes of Hull City’s game against Cardiff on the final day of the season – it was exciting. I’ve had a few chats with the manager here and I really had belief and confidence in what he was saying about the club. The chance to play in the Premier League is also a massive thing and I can’t wait to get started here.”

The History

A product of the Glasgow Rangers youth academy, McGregor’s career began back in 2001-02 with a couple of appearances for the first-team at the age of 20. He failed to play a single minute of the following treble-winning season and after featuring four times during 2003-04, spent a couple of years on loan at St Johnstone and Dunfermline. By 2006-07, however, he was installed as number one at Ibrox and picked up the Players Player of the Year Award as a result of his displays between the sticks under Paul Le Guen.

McGregor played 196 times over six seasons as the ‘Gers first-choice keeper, winning 11 major honours over his time at the Govan club, before making his way to Besiktas last summer after Ally McCoist’s side were relegated to the Scottish Third Division. Over a single season in Turkey he produced five clean sheets in 26 matches (his replacement managed three clean sheets in eight matches by comparison) and helped his side to a third place finish before Bruce clinched his signature earlier this week.

On the international stage, McGregor has turned out for Scotland Under 21s on six occasions and has also received 29 caps for the senior side. Although his heroics between the sticks have been crucial to Scotland at times, his overall number of appearances would surely be greater if he hadn’t been banned for over a year due to alcohol-related “multiple breaches of squad discipline” back in April 2009.

The Prospects

McGregor certainly seems guaranteed starts for the season ahead and as a first-choice stopper for one of the three promoted teams, can be expected to be priced in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Given that each of last term’s main promoted keepers came in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a similar price for the Scot looks on the cards, then.

Looking at their defensive displays in the Championship in 2012/13, the Tigers registered 16 clean sheets last term (10 at home, six away), though questions remain over whether Bruce’s 3-5-2 system may be picked apart in the top-flight. While plenty of saves are expected, McGregor’s Fantasy potential could also be determined by Ahmed Elmohamady’s classification in the Fantasy games – the Egyptian produced three goals and nine assists from a right wing-back role and, if listed as a defender, will surely offer us the most appealing route into Bruce’s backline.

For those eyeing up the Hull keeper as a possible rotation option, the opening schedule has certainly been kind to the promoted club. Their first six home games welcome Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace to the KC in a run that takes us up to Gameweek 12 – as mentioned in a previous article, Hull and Palace alternate home/away across the entire season, though for those looking for a short-term fix, West Brom, Norwich and West Ham offer up a strong goalkeeper combination over the opening six fixtures of the season.

Paying for his potential rather then track-record. He could be really good, but id wait and see and use the funds on someone else in the meantime.

yeah i definitely agree he has potential to score well in the Sky game but its probably best to wait. The bargains seem few and far between this year. Last season Cazorla 6.7 Micu 5.5 Fellaini 6.2, Hazard and Walcott under 8, Wisdom, Jenkinson, Cameron all had good spells at under 4m. Lukaku 6.2 if i remember correctly.

I'm sure some bargains will crop up this season, but with prices of high scorers much higher there should be a much wider variety of teams, rather than the template of last year

I'm sure if you told someone this time last year you were going to go with a midfield of Walcott, Cazorla, Hazard, Michu and Fellaini, you would have been laughed off the site.

e bargains only emerge at about 4.20pm on the opening day. Wilshere could yet prove indispensable.

I saw it. I still expect WBA to be fairly sold at the back. Regardless of your thoughts on Clark, he inherited a defece that was well drilled by Woy, and he learnt under Jose. he knows how to organise a defence. But that being said, unless Ruddy is 5m (same as Foster) or Ridgewell is 4.5 I doubt I'll be touching them

Fair enough JK I'll keep an eye on them so but I had written them off as untouchables at any price due to their dire form.

5 Cs in the last 33 games with only 3 in the second half of the season would indicate clarke doesn't know how to set up a defence as 3 in the first 5 gws was arguable down to the systems woy had put in place before he left.

Apparently there was offer Ibra + 40m for Cavania but De Laurentis wanted only cash. I think that is humiliation for Ibrahimovic and he will insist to leave.

So hold your thoughts on Suarez still Demi, we aren't sure that Real transfer is gonna happen.

That leaves us with another big question mark..? What is Che gonna do with a striker?

I think Ibra could be bought cheap in this case. He is the smart move. Seems something like Dortmund will do. I am not saying they will actually do it, but it is that kind of a business.

One thing is for certain, whenever he goes the team will win domestic league. That guy is a machine for trophies. He has something like 11 in 12 years or so

I see a lot of the lads posting about uber cheap defense: and rotating; and a lot of data; and ppg; and money spent; and etc... The thing that you will play/bench the wrong guy aside (which I say is a valid point), the lads doing/ promoting that, forget one big fantasy football thing.

The value of a free transfer !!!

How certain are those 4.0m defenders? How much time they have problems considering game time/ playing minutes? Injuries, cards, change of manager, change of style of play. They usually play for bad teams and more likely they will lose place. Remember Rdg last year. The 4.0m reliable defenders are really rare within years. Only 1 or 2 max every season (Davies, Demel in example). The same thing more or less could be said about 4.5m defenders too. They aren't that reliable too. What happens when one 4.0m defender gets injured? You will use your FT for the lad from the same team??? Come onnn... Question is will he be the same price (Reid from WHam in example as a replacement for Demel) ? Usually he will be at least 0.5m more expensive. Whenever you try to do that, lads will tell you its a sideway move and don't bother with it. Imagine doing Gorkss to Shoreym, then to Harte, then to the last lad I forgot who he was. That is 4 transfers for Rdg defender only.

I predict that with uber cheap defense you will spend 12 -14 transfers from your 37 FT. No statistical data could back that up. I remember whenever I had stable defense I was able to concentrate on more important parts of my squad and always had the big hitter at the real time. With this cheap defenses always looks like I was 1 or 2 steps behind.

Sayonara uber cheap, Asta La Vista for me. I might squeeze some of them surely but not all uber surely.

    Thanks and good night 😉

total understatement, cheapies is the way to go until Jan, as it allows you to spend big upfront, where you are more likely to get points. Then you can choose a balance between cheaps and expensives.

I went uber at the start of last season and I regretted it all the way to the Jan WC. Never really produced the points I wanted and I was constantly hampered with injuries and players getting dropped to the bench. I nearly sure I had a few weeks at the start of the season I couldn't field 11 players!

I invested more money in my DEF on the Jan WC and the points rolled in!

      7.0...5.0...4.5...4.5...4.0

      Great post whatever peoples views.
Sad thing is, once season starts, longer posts will get ignored more as pages move quick and many cant spend the 2 minutes to read such posts.

Defence value is really tricky. Last year i had a pile of 4.5s and it failed me. One rival started with rafael and ivanovic and scored big.

He got a tad lucky on both i though. Start of season, neither was nailed on. Thats where i messed up. I got tomkins, fabio to name 2. Neither held a place down.

The stategy i think is not to pick prices first and fit names in, but to pick players first and then select those who look good value from them.

But only take those who will 100% play AND... Not be replaced by transfer window closing. I signed Green, then in came Cesar. Huge error.

I may get a big club full back as they get forward more, but on the whole, I plan to spend cheap in defence. All the top players seem to.

Absolutely right. This is where rotation + uber can cloud peoples judgement. I think you nailed on the head when we should be looking to get the right player first then look to get value out of them. It is absolutely essential that people first consider whether a player is 100% nailed on and worthwhile.

      Great post Daniel.
I agree with everything apart from the 12 - 14 transfers bit. Probably more likely to be 6 -8 but your premise stays the same.

I'm ignoring cheapie rotation this season (apart from GKs, where it is very useful). Concentrating on favourable fixtures in the first 10/12 GWs for my cheapie defs and to hell with H/A rotation. Real value can be found in the FIXTURE based rotation, regardless of whether your cheapie is H or A.

For eg, some of these rotations could leave you with the choice of playing a Hull def at home to Newcastle or a Norwich def away to Hull. The conventional wisdom would say play your Hull lad, but form could dictate the opposite, thus throwing the classic H/A out the window.

      You're a legend Daniel 😉

This is a reply to Daniel's post, but I have zero confidence that it will end up in the right place as HC decidedly doesn't like my mobile browser.

A great post, Daniel. Should be obvious, but gets glossed over a lot around these parts. However, the value of having outperforming ubers cannot be overstated, desire your correct assertion that identifying them from day one is nigh on impossible.

A general strategy I will be going with this year is to start with a mid-high price defense and reliable 2nd tier attackers with the exception of 3 captain choices. Then, I will begin using my transfers to free up cash from my back line and redirect it to the high performing attacking players as both the outperforming ubers and best big hitters identify themselves.

This strategy will give me more points while I suss out the moves to be made than one where I find myself with a crap defense and (as Daniel wrote) need to spend a bunch of transfers to get it sorted.

You are absolutely right to point out the shortfalls or oversights regarding any ubers. It is particularly relevant at the start of the season where its difficult to judge nailed on players. I think people have to be careful when considering going all out on a 5 way uber rotation at the back. Their general unreliability can cause a massive strain on a squad potentially resulting in the need to wild card early or spend points to fix the team.

      Morning all,

I see we have a hot topic trying to destroy the merits of even considering a Uber

      Can I say one thing;

How about a BALANCE argument please.

I think people have presumed that the most important thing when picking an Uber is the price. It isn't. It is the same for if you are picking a defender at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 million, How nailed on is that player? If an Uber is available with nailed on players then there is relatively no more risk to your transfers than there is to picking any player as any player can become injured.

Just a quick reminder that the Uber I have put forward to the community, isn't full of 4 mil players.

      The RMT would look like;

      5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4

A quick look at the minutes played proves my point further with 5 players starting price at 5 or below and 5 players, 5 or above.

      Top ten defender by minutes played;

      Baines
      Shawcross
      Williams
      Lowton
      Ollson
      McCauley
      Johnson
      Walker
      Jagieka
      Huth

(FYI, Is it the same 5,5 split for the next 20)

The other thing to point out about the claim of 14 transfers, the Uber is designed to get you to the Jan WC(19GWs) where you can then load up of the Big Hitters at the back as this is when statistically the big clubs have an increase in CS. It also has a designed two transfer points where of course you can break the Uber and convert it to a 2+2+1 or even a 2+3 but you don't even have to wait till then as you can break the Uber whenever you want the same way as any other defender combination. To think you are locked in an Uber trying to fix injury after injury is ridiculous.

If we want to flip the argument on to the traditional defender formats, how many big hitters failed to deliver in the first half of the season?

      Baines?
      Kompany?
      Terry?
      Cole?
      Vidic?
      Lescott?
      Clichy?
      Richards?
      Vermaelen?
      BAE?
      Vertonghen?

The only three I can remember that did consistently hoover the points up for their price was Rafael, Ivan and Zaba. The three that were quoted as the Uber breakers. There is an argument that even Zaba hoovered more points up in the second half of the season.

Now even though it is coming across that I am hell bent of owning an Uber, I will be the first to play a 2+3 at the back if the budget can stretch to it. a Baines/Vertonghen/ Three way is my preference. I have shown enough three ways on these boards to prove that statement. What I don't like is a long winded post with no evidence or stat based theories trying to destroy a perfectly good option for the community. The winner last played an Uber

      Cheers

        Nice post 😉

I think Daniel possibly has a point regarding identifying those players who are nailed on cheapies at the start of the season - even Begovic was a gamble for me last year as he wasn't sure to start, but I also agree with you that being cheap doesn't inherently predispose a player to injuries/suspension/rotation.

You're right about the risk in chosing a cheap defender, but good continuous research should make you more able to navigate in that market. Yes, I expect unexpected transfers, but I'd do the same when chasing for points for players in form.

      This is what I said in yesterday's discussion on the Uber defence;
"3.3 - 3.8 is a great average (Tommy suggested this is the avg you can expect per defender), and pretty similar to my findings which included BAPS/goals/assists/CS.

However - a quick reality check. I took a quick look at Azpi and GJohnson's points when they played easy games home and away (below top 7 basically) and that gave these results
      - G Johnson 4.96 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.0 start of the season)
      - Zabaleta 4.19 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.0 start of the season)
      - Azpi 4.16 ppg vs easy teames home and away (cost 6.5 start of the season)
These three guys avg 4.43ppg together.

So with a 4 - 4.5 defender you lose out on 0.63 - 1.13 points per defender = accumulated for 3 defender backline is 1.89 - 3.39 points lost on the entire defense when going for the Uber vs modest heavy hitters like Azpi/Zab/Johnson. But you have saved at least 4.5 million to spend elsewhere."

In conclusion, if you can live with the risk and stay loyal to the strategy when it seems to going to FPL Hell. Maybe, just maybe, you should have 1 semi big hitter like Zab / GJohnson to keep you safe.

This is a great post, although it's addressing a philosophy nobody has proposed in the first place.

Tommy & myself have been suggesting that money could be saved to spend on attacking players by not buying big hitters or lots of mid priced players at the back.

Never has it been proposed to pack the team with 4.0m defenders.

My analysis showed that 4.0m defenders was a waste of time if you wanted points, but there is the benefit of course of getting a better attacker. It was established teams who had a poor season that might be the place where value is found.

As for the confusion on what an uber is, I would propose that it's simply a defence where nobody plays every week, as it's designed around rotating fixtures. What you spend on that uber is up to the individual. Cheap uber vs mid priced uber etc.

Tommy's uber had three transfers which led me to come up with an alternative featuring no promoted teams, who could see you through to the Jan wildcard with no transfers (apart from those forced upon you).

The price of those defenders would mean that when a transfer came along you would have options on the replacement.

I keep asking myself if I am brave enough to select an uber. I'll check back in when the player list is released and I can see how it looks 🙂

True enough. Did seem an odd one. I think the media get as bored as we do over the summer break. A shame to lose a player of such quality but he is a bit flawed to say the least.

Ramires and Luiz can get forward, Mikel is just a sitter.
I think Ramires becomes his Essien and Mikel his Makalele. Hope your right for fpl as mikel offers nothing and Luiz OOP would be very good pick.

    Guaranteed ubers?

I see the community have recently been objectifying the perils of a cheap defence which fails due to players dropped/injury etc. As we cannot really factor likelihood of players getting injured, We can make a list of player likely to avoid the threat of rotation and still be 4.5 or less. (I'm including keepers in this).

    A few snippets:

    Shaw, Clyne, Boruc 4.5m
    Rat 4.5m
    Mark Hudson, Marshall 4.5m
    McGregor, Hobbs 4.5m
    Lowton 4.5m

    Speculative punt: Ovideo 4.5m

Any feedback on the community's thoughts on likely starters we can rely on would be most welcome 🙂

The difficulty will be judging whether they will be 4.5 or less. I'd like to add Martin but he will probably be 5m now. Once the game kicks off and we start building our squad we will be able to make clearer judgement calls.
