Pre-Season

Pre Season Section Now Live

With July now upon us, the Pre-Season section of the site is up and running once again as we edge towards the first batch of friendlies. We’ve collated the current summer schedule for all 20 Premier League clubs and also added links to every article referencing the upcoming season, from Moving Targets to Sleepers, Great Expectations to Scout Reports to Fixture Analysis pieces, in addition to a look back at the three promoted sides displays in the previous campaign.

We’ll be updating the Pre-Season section on a daily basis, adding every article upon publication. Each team also has their own “Scout Notes” and “Form Players” sections – we’ll be scouring the friendlies and, as well as rolling out plenty of Scout Scribbles articles to cover the games, will be using this as a handy one-stop-shop for your guide ahead of next month’s kick-off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not a long enough summer for some of the players, the Confed gets over, and lo, the pre-season starts.

The expression on the face of the person in the picture clearly indicates that. 😉

              His starts over those seasons:

              06/07: 5
              07/08: 11
              08/09: 16

              11/12: 32
              12/13: 24

Not worth picking in his first 5 seasons. Wait and see with Ox.

                  06/07: 16
                  07/08: 18
                  08/09: 6
                  09/10: 13
                  10/11: 13
                  11/12: 3
                  12/13: 9

Basically, I'm speaking from bitter experience. Been championing Theo for 7 years, and picking him in FPL when fit, when I shouldn't have bothered. Not going to make the same mistake with the Ox.

How many fantasy football games do you plan to play in the 2013/14 season?

Which ones do you plan to play and will it be more or less than last season?

It would be good to find out who played the most last season and how they coped with the differing formats.

Although I´m not qualified for prizes in the Sky game I gave it a shot 2 seasons ago, limited transfers and not being able to tinker with your team kept me away from it till eventually I gave up!

This is where FPL is best at, keeps your interest every day as you can tinker with your team as keep up with the latest news on injuries and form and of course as many transfers as you like.

2, FPL and Sky Sports. I started off fantasy footy back in the day with the sky game, so always have a team, even if I now prefer fpl. Sky is like the family friendly version of fantasy footy, easier to do well in and has real prizes.

Never had a stint in the top 1,000 in fpl in the last two years, had stints in top 10 in sky sports. FFS is starting to ruin the monopoly though with your articles on sky 😉

I’m thinking of going with three this season – FPL Sky and Metro, but with the latter two if I don’t get off to a good start, will most likely stop playing and focus on FPL which at the end of the day is the only one that people care about

One issue I have always found with playing multiple games, sometimes you think twice about getting a player in because he is in a team in another game – I don’t like to have all eggs in one basket but then miss out on the points

It's lots of fun. I came 39th in the Metro one last season. I was 6th after getting Mktaryan GW1. Good for scouting players before they join the Premier League. Also despite the glitches, things like manager subs make an interesting addition to the game.

Last year Sky Sports, Metro Prem & Metro UCL, FIFA UCL, FPL & Player Exchange, Telegraph, Sun, Daily Mail, IKTS. This year probably no UCL action as I cannot be fussed to keep up on the European leagues as well.

Metro is my favorite as the scoring system is tremendous as you can get 50s & 60s from midfielders who don't score and defenders who conceded. I finally had a good year on it last year but ran out of steam at the end.

I am liking the changes to Sky this year. Started really well last year with Hazard (c), Michu, Petric and others GW1 but still manage to steal defeat from the jaws of victory by 1 pt. Ran out of subs so an extra 10 will help and the (c) change will make it interesting.

FPL I am getting better thanks to FFS last year got a decent wedge from 3rd in the work league. The whole PPI & Bonus thing though *shakes head* hopefully this year will be better as they will be using OPTA stats.

Daily Mail is different as you can use the whole of your 15 man team and you get points for win bonuses and from the FA Cup as well.

Sun is ok but its all about the long term and if you haven't got a good team together by the 3rd window your pretty stuffed and any bad injuries can kill any chance you have if they come at the wrong time.

Player Exchange last year was something different but it was all about the "all ins" if you wanted to score anything decent.

I don't fancy the pre season schedule for Crystal Palace too much.

    July 20 – Dagenham and Redbridge (a)
    July 23 – Gillingham (a)
    July 27 – Crawley Town (a)
    August 3 – Waterford United (a)
    August 6 – Dulwich Hamlet (a)

I doubt we will learn a lot there. Hardly competition is it.

I think palace could be derby style whipping boys this season. Its been a while since we had a promoted team like that and would be a factor when deciding your captain – ‘who have palace got this week…?’

They obviously don't like to travel very far! I won't have anyone bad-mouthing the Gills though - if it wasn't for 2 injury time goals in 1999 the likes of Aguero and David Silva would be playing for us!!!

Have they got any home friendlies? It could be that is just their away ones. Does seem a bit lightweight if that's all they've got. Crawley and Gillingham will give them a good game, but needs at least a good Spanish or French team with some skill in the mix.

Can anyone give me a feel for who is a MotM darling for Sky sports? To see Suarez on 10 and RvP 4 for last season suggests there's some bias going on a la Adam a few years ago in FPL. Ashley Williams also got 8. Any others that people remember?

They are shocking at the MOTM to be honest, it often differs from the advertised one during the game and feels more like the person who worte the articles prefrence or player in his own fantasy team (the sky employes league came 3rd or something overall).

From memory can give you the most voted per team

      Arsenal - Cazorla
      Aston Villa - Benteke
      Chelsea - Hazard/Mata/Lampard
      Everton - Fellani/Baines/Jagielka
      Fulham - Berbatov
      Liverpool - Suarez
      Man City - Toure
      Man Utd - RVP/Carrick
      Newcastle - Cabaye when fit
      Norwich - Snodgrass/Bassong
      Southampton - Schneiderin/Lambart
Stoke - Shawcross (by a mile)
Sunderland - John O Shea? not many
      Swansea - Michu
      Tottenham - Bale
      West Brom - Lukaku
      West ham - Reid/Jask/Noble

Aston Villa will be using up their remaining budget of 94 tokens in Round 4. Their strategy is then to make some profit on them in the transfer window. The source of this news is from a rival club, who claim to have recruited a spy in the Villa dressing room.

Think I have a good idea of my team plan for the first few weeks, assuming I have the pricing right:-

    GW1
    Jaask (5.5) [Boruc(4.5)]
    Ivanovic (7), Jones (4.5), Turner (5) [Santon (5), Shaw (4.5)]
    Bale (12), Hazard (10), Noble/Koren (5), Mirallas (6.5) [Ramirez 5.5]
    Cavani/Torres (10), Carroll (8), RVW (6.5)

All adds up to 99.5M, so a little spare just in case. Have used Tommies cheap 5 man rotation (c).

    GW2: Ivanovic -> Hobbs/Chester (4)
    GW3: Hazard -> HBA (6.5)
    GW4: RVW -> RVP (13.5)

All adds up to 100M, so hoping to avoid price rises.

    GW4
    Boruc(4.5) [Jaask (5.5)]
    Hobbs/Chester(4), Santon (5), Shaw (4.5) [Jones (4.5), Turner (5)]
    Bale (12), HBA(6.5), Noble/Koren (5), Mirallas (6.5), Ramirez 5.5
    Carroll (8), RVP (13.5) [Cavani/Torres (10)]

If RVW does the business then I would drop Carroll instead GW4, use the extra 1.5 to get Kagawa or Countinho in midfield.

I know it's early but I am bored! So any thoughts on prices, tactics and transfers?

Phones 4U is a Championship game Teddy. As basic as you get, unless they've changed ALL the rules. Very useful for seeing players who may get transferred at Christmas, or promoted at the end of the season.

I've not played Yahoo, registered last year then lost password and login details. Gave up/too busy.

If you don't get off to a flier in the Sun you're stuffed imo, and the European strikers in the Mirror drove me nuts, as I kept missing deadlines (my own fault of course). 11.30 French kickoffs. 😡

Yup. And they were super slow at updating the European player scores. It didn't add anything to my playing experience.

Don't follow the Championship in the slightest. So that's not for me.

If you like, but prices rise quickly, as determined by player performance, so if someone has a hat trick, you have to buy them within an hour, or they'll become unaffordable.

So RvP spent most of last season priced at around 30 (out of 100 budget).

With all this talk of uber defences anyone considered just getting 3 cheapies and forget rotation? My mate does this and doesn't work out too badly.

    Turner 4.5 Clyne 4.5 Jones 4.5 Cardiff 4 Hull 4

Norwich Southampton WBA all have great starts so little need for rotation, CS dont always come at home, plus you have a fall back option of a Cardiff or Hull defender if needed.

I'll probably just pick the 5 cheapest defenders with the best potential for points, not based on whether they rotate.
Might go for one 5.0 if Coleman is classified a defender.

      This is pretty much my plan. 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0

and just pick the teams withe strongest starts. I'm only using rotation for my cheap GKs. Rotation leads to heartache, stress and benchwarmers become troublesome because what do you do, replace him with another from the same team? nahhh

Did up my Sky team fairly quickly, just had a glance at last years top scorers and then picked players mostly on value to points scored last year. Good indicator until the budget options show themselves, rather then risking them from the start and wasting transfers.

Don't mind sharing the formula and team now as it's still fairly quiet and plenty of time until kick off, but I can't see much changing.

    Migs,

    Rat, Taylor (Car), Luna,

Bale, Snodgrass, Cazorla, De Guzman, Gerrard,

    RVP, Berbatov

Snodgrass, Berbatov and De Guzman are players who scored very well last year, but did not get overly large price increases for whatever reason in comparison to some.

Looks about right. Berbatov tailed off a bit at the end of the season, might be a worry. De Guzman and Swansea as a whole might suffer with Europa fatigue.

Usually a budget forward ala Lambert or Snodgrass last year comes to the fore, so Berbs will be the one to go. Saying that, even though he tailed off, he scored only a few points less then Hazard last year. Must be a sky sports darling.

I agree about Swansea, but sure at 5.0m and 130ish points last season, he seems the best budget option currently imo.

Prediction price for van Ginkel in FPL?

8 goals, 8 assists last season.
Pass accuracy and tackle win% are higher than Ramires and Lampard.

    Guaranteed ubers?

I see the community have recently been objectifying the perils of a cheap defence which fails due to players dropped/injury etc. As we cannot really factor likelihood of players getting injured, We can make a list of player likely to avoid the threat of rotation and still be 4.5 or less. (I'm including keepers in this).

    A few snippets:

    Shaw, Clyne, Boruc 4.5m
    Rat 4.5m
    Mark Hudson, Marshall 4.5m
    McGregor, Hobbs 4.5m
    Lowton 4.5m

    Speculative punt: Ovideo 4.5m

Any feedback on the community's thoughts on likely starters we can rely on would be most welcome 🙂

What makes such a judgement difficult at this time and even in GW1 is that the transfer window doesn't close till around GW3. The difficulty arrises in choosing a GW1 side without knowing who the managers might bring in to replace the formerly 'nailed on' players. Promoted sides in particular could be susceptible. Same with teams whose defensive frailties were exposed last season. Unfortunately this captures a lot of uber options.
