Roy Hodgson “supersized” his team to counter the Potteries air raid but saw his lofty selection undone by a Rory Delap header. The diminutive Carlos Vela demonstrated his “big” talent to come to Hodgson’s rescue, as the Baggies earned a point and were only denied all three by a miraculous late display by Asmir Begovic between the sticks. Here is the run-down on last night’s action from the Britannia…

With a record of only one away victory in his last 28 Premier League away days (thanks to my new ‘friend’ OptaJoe for that one), Roy Hodgson opted to shuffle his lineup to clear the way for some additional six footers, calling up all the giants in his armoury to combat Stoke’s aerial threat in an attempt to turnaround West Brom’s woeful dip in form. Steven Reid was recalled in place of the diminutive Gonzalo Jara at right-back, Joseph Mulumbu shored up the midfield, with Peter Odemwingie dropping to the bench. The forgotten Abdoulaye Meite was plucked from obscurity to replace Gabriel Tamas in defence, while Bo Myhill (is he short?) was benched for club captain Scott Carson in goal.

Stoke only made a single change from the side that lost at the Emirates last time out as Kenwyne Jones earned a recall to the starting lineup in place of Glenn Whelan – Jon Walters pushed back into midfield to accommodate the return of Jones. Matt Etherington was only fit enough for a place on the bench after being touch and go all week with back and hamstring problems persisting.

It was perhaps unsurprising, given the team selections, that a set-piece provided Stoke’s opener. Rory Delap, often the provider with his gargantuan throws, applied the header on the end of a Jermaine Pennant corner early in the second-half.

A fairly drab affair by all accounts sparked into life in the final minutes as late Baggies sub Carlos Vela transformed the visitors, combining with their two best players on the night – Graham Dorrans and Steven Reid. It was the latter in the 83rd minute who turned provider, crossing for the Arsenal loanee to level matters, quite possibly from an offside position. Vela got his second goal as a West Brom sub (his last 4 league goals have come from the bench), while Reid pick up an assist as well as full 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts.

Asmir Begovic was a revelation in goal, saving Stoke from complete collapse late on. The Bosnian kept Pulis’ men on level terms as Stoke surrendered control to the visitors. The heroic saves in the dying minutes tallied up to not only reward him with 3 points for his 9 saves, but also caught the eye of the Bonus judge – Begovic ended the evening with a total of 7 points; a stark contrast to the paltry returns earned from the Stoke back four.

Stoke have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league in their last six matches – their last shut-out coming against Bolton back in gameweek 23. Things aren’t much better at the other end of the field; Delap’s goal was Stoke’s first strike in three matches – epitomising their current struggle.

Chris Brunt somewhat surprisingly picked up the final bonus point as well as his ninth yellow card of the season which sees him teeter precariously close to a two-match ban. Robert Huth was also in the book once again – his seventh card of the season.

Jermaine Pennant was withdrawn ten minutes from time with what appeared to be a hamstring injury – keep your eyes peeled on the Scout Tweets and Injuries and Bans for news on his availability ahead of the weekend.

I can't believe all this noise about Torres. He can't hit a barndoor at the minute. Even against blackpool, he'll probably get a 4 and get subbed off!

Saw your comment on my post earlier, with top players like Torres, all it takes is 1 goal to spark something, his confidence is being whittled away at in every game he doesn't score or is heavily criticised, I am certain that if he scores tonight, which is what I was saying, he will go into the Blackpool game fully expecting to net, and I would be expecting him to net a couple of times.

For what it's worth I agree it's too early to get excited. JU is right that it onyol takes one goal, but until I see that goal I'm not interested, the same could be said for him this entire season.

I think we have seen the best of Torres in England.

He certainly isnt the player he was when he arrived on these shores. When he goes to Spain/ Italy he will kill it again. 50m was a steal!

you only have to see that one game against Real Madrid at Anfield when he ran his balls off. That pricked up my ears. He has never run as hard again but did so quite alot when he first came to the league before most defenders had an idea of how to keep him relativley quiet. Injuries aside, I would be very worried about his attitude/ maturity if I was a chelsea fan. Also how much of the 50m do you think was a royalty for nicking his song from the Liverpool fans?!

His movement has been sensational lately. It's only his touch and finishing which is letting him down at the moment, largely due to confidence. He will return to his best very soon. No doubt about it.

        300, I think.

        3 batsmen out - 90 points
        3 bowlers out - 45 points
        6 wickets - 50 points
        economy < 5 - 15 points
        MOTM - 100 points

        total: 300 points

Obviously 600 if you were so clever as to captain him. Still, not as good as Roachy yesterday! 😀

stilicho / johnny U / ok, you as well jamsiep - Worth getting rid of RVP for say Zigic and then bring in Nasri next week as Arsenal cover, or should I hang on to rvp rather and bring say a a Birm def in place of Kelly(I have Foster)

    Thoughts?

I am not sure what I want to do with RVP. I held him this week for my Tevez/Rooney/RVP front line, and am thinking I want to keep it that way, him being guaranteed out this weekend may force me to knee jerk, but there is a big gap between GW29 and GW30 so he could/should be fit, and he is the main man at Arsenal again.

I am kindof tempted by Torres this weekend if he can get a goal tonight, he badly needs it. Getting back on the Chelsea bus is the way to go in the next few weeks I think.

If I were you, I would be doing Bardsley OUT Baines IN, I think Coleman and Baines offer more by way of potential clean sheets in the DGW than Birmingham, and offer more by way of attacking points, and for what it's worth I am thinking of doing Huth OUT Baines IN this week, but would have Carr/Foster/Baines/Coleman.

I think I will be holding on to RVP.

I am *probably* going to hold RVP pending what Wenger says, if he says anything in the region of "three weeks" then I assume it'll be at least a month and I'll ship him - but for a Chelsea striker probably rather than a 5 to 7 mil job (none of which I'm really sold on.)

If the RVP injury is only a 1 GW thing then I'll use it as an excuse to ship Odem now (probably for Zigic, despite what I said above) instead of in a few weeks. I'd be tempted to shift Bardsley or Brunt from your team if the RVP thing is only short term.

Baird OR Luiz? Seems a no brainer! If Luiz can nail down a spot he seems to be a fantastic bargain, and as far as I am concerned the only way is up for Chelsea at the moment, I want to get on their players sooner rather than later, looking at Luiz and Torres myself.

is rafael gonna play tonight? Why didn't he play last match? Just normal rotation?

He was benched Soop...I detect a lack of confidence in him since the Spurs red card. Wonder if Ferguson will go for his pace tonight though vs the threat of Cole and Malouda on the left.

It's because smalling is playing so Fergie doesn't like to play rafael alongside him due to lack of experience.

Once Rio returns, I'd expect to see rafael drafted back into the side.

Just rotation, O'Shea played against some of the bigger teams for his height and strength.

It is becoming very hard to predict when SAF will play Rafael since his red card and subsequent concussion, but I would certainly fancy him to play tonight, to counteract the speed of Ashley Cole and Malouda on the left. That being said, O'Shea has always been his big game RB, so it really is hard to call.

Ye that's true about John in the big games. When Raf gets rattled he gets clumsy (spurs, last year v Munich)I've changed my mind I reckon O'Shea will start.

I'm hoping so - a few of us will need him to field XI this week - probably the same for the weekend as well.

hoping to get Cahill in this week (as long as Reading dont get a draw tonight)...but is anyone else a bit worried about his form. Chris Brunt has been a case in point for me of how a player in bad (fpl) form struggles regardless of his fixtures:
    a) there was a report a while back from the Asia cup that he was playing terribly for Oz.
    b) Is Moyes going to play Beckford & Saha together...and then drop Cahill back?
    c) any news on his ankle after his 16mins on Sat!?
    Thanks all

I think you have laid the seeds of doubt in your own head with that post, unless we get some positive news on his fitness, or indeed he plays tonight and plays well, there is nothing indicating that he will be a fruitful purchase for the DGW.

Your point is well made highlighting Brunt's form, ya, he did well earlier in the season, but he is now doing nothing, and people bit on that for the DGW, form can change quickly sometimes, but more often than not, if a players form or injury status is in doubt going into a DGW, there are better options.

I am going for Baines and Coleman.
