Pre-Season

Pre-Season Friendlies – Weekend Round-Up

David Moyes, Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Martinez all suffer debut defeats in a weekend that saw 10 Premier League clubs take part in friendly action. Arsenal kicked off their summer with an emphatic win in Thailand, Iago Aspas earned the plaudits from Brendan Rodgers after an impressive 45 minute sub appearance in Liverpool’s cruise at Preston and Dimiatr Berbatov was at the double as Fulham kicked off their Costa Rica tour with a victory.

Den Haag 0 Swansea 1
Swansea ended their tour of Holland on Saturday afternoon with a fourth consecutive win. Michael Laudrup’s side now return to the UK having triumphed in all of their friendlies on Dutch soil – the Swans boss once again rang the changes during the game, replacing eight of his starting XI at half-time. Debut boy Wilfried Bony climbed off the bench to replace Michu as the lone forward after the break, though failed to find the net – that honour went to Wayne Routledge, who chipped home the winner after a superb Jonjo Shelvey assist.

Singha All Stars XI 1 Man United 0
David Moyes tasted defeat in his first match in charge at United. The Red Devils went down narrowly in a match played in “29-degree heat, with 75% humidity”, according to the club’s official website. With the likes of Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa handed extended rests, and Wayne Rooney flying home injured, it was left to Danny Welbeck to lead the line – United spurned a batch of chances to equalise, though new boy Wilfried Zaha came closest – he hit the woodwork after being introduced off the bench just after the hour mark.

Post-match, Moyes again dismissed suggestions that Rooney was set to exit Old Trafford and proceeded to stress the importance of the forward for the season ahead:

“Overall my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we get an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him. Wayne has a major role to play because we need to try and get him as many goals as we possibly can. Wayne can play up-top, I think he can play dropped in. I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to be able to use Danny Welbeck, Chicharito as well. I want to try and give myself as many options as possible”

These quotes have spawned a series of reports this morning, suggesting that Rooney is set for a bench role under Moyes, although it’s clear that the new United boss has expressed a desire to play them both in tandem. It remains to be seen if this does materialise with Moyes favouring a 4-5-1 at Everton and with Kagawa well suited to role up in support of Van Persie.

Elsewhere, Moyes went on to look for the positives in the weekend defeat, taking time to praise both Zaha and fellow-youngster Adnan Januzaj for their respective displays:

“I thought Adnan played well tonight and was a plus for us. He was the pick of the group. It’s always good when you give a young player a chance and he shows up, which I thought he did tonight. And the more he plays like that, the more opportunities he’s liable to get. Wilfried did well and gave us something a little different. We’ll see how Wilfried does. We brought him here to give him a chance. It’s the first time I’ve worked with him, the first time I’ve really had the chance to see him up close, so he’ll certainly be part of the squad and we’ll see where we can fit him in.”

Bournemouth 0 West Ham 2
Sam Allardyce handed both Momo Diarra and Joey O’Brien their first game time of pre-season, with the former Bolton man replacing Guy Demel after the break. The Ivorian supplied the cross for Kevin Nolan’s opener – the Hammers skipper has now scored in each of the last two but was subbed off on 51 minutes as a precaution after picking up a knock. Jack Collison also found the net as Allardyce’s side maintained their 100% winning record in a match that saw Dutchman Orlando Engelaar earn game time as a triallist. Andy Carroll (heel) and George McCartney (knee) remain on the sidelines for the Hammers.

Preston 0 Liverpool 4
Brendan Rodgers gave all four of his new summer recruits the chance to impress at Deepdale; Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure featured from the start while Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto climbed off the bench at half-time. Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock from the spot after being hauled down in the box within 15 minutes, while youngster Jordan Ibe hammered home the second from long range. Aspas was the standout performer, though – he teed up Raheem Sterling for the Reds’ third before grabbing the fourth with an impressive 25-yard strike. Injury-wise, Daniel Sturridge remains on the sidelines, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly returned after long-term problems, but Steven Gerrard was omitted despite returning to full training. After the match, Rodgers was quick to praise Aspas’ impact:

“Iago works hard; he’s got a trick in and around the box and he excites supporters. He drifts well in between the lines and always wants to receive the ball. But what I like is that he wants to score goals. He’s looking to create and combine or go solo by himself and get a shot in. His goal was a terrific strike.”

Tamworth 0 West Brom 4
Steve Clarke’s side cruised to victory in a behind-closed-doors match against the Conference outfit. Nicolas Anelka teed up James Morrison for the opener before Shane Long headed home the second just prior to the half-hour mark. The Baggies boss made 10 changes at the break and saw Markus Rosenberg notch the third courtesy of a Gabriel Tamas cross, while Saido Berahino completed the scoring, with Billy Jones supplying the final pass.

Indonesia XI 0 Arsenal 7
The Gunners cruised to victory in their first match of the summer. Theo Walcott opening the scoring thanks to an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain assist before Chuba Akpom gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead at the break. Arsene Wenger made 10 changes in the second-half, with Olivier Giroud climbing off the bench to notch twice, while Lukas Podolski, Kris Olsson and Thomas Eisfield completed the scoring. Oxlade-Chamberlain was hailed as the most impressive performer for Wenger’s side before he made way at the break.

VfL Bochum 1 Aston Villa 1
Paul Lambert’s side registered their third successive 1-1 draw of the summer in the final fixture of their Germany tour. The Villa boss continued his policy of utilising the depth of his squad and replaced his starting XI after the break – new boy Nicklas Helenius scored for the second time in three games for the midlanders, an indication he’s taking little time to settle and may be ready to step up at centre-forward should Christian Benteke up and leave.

Austria Vienna 2 Everton 1
The Toffees were narrowly defeated by a host side gearing up for the start of their domestic season next week. Just one new signing – Joel Robles – featured, though Roberto Martinez started with the likes of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman, with Baines providing the assist for Vellios’ consolation. Martinez made eight changes at the break but Everton were unable to pull another goal back.

Supersport United 2 Man City 0
Manuel Pellegrini tasted defeat in his first match in charge of City on Sunday afternoon. The Chilean is clearly still in the initial stages of refining his squad and made wholesale changes after the break, with out-of-favour Scott Sinclair even afforded some game time having recovered from shoulder surgery. Elsewhere in the side, Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta have yet to join up with the tour after representing Argentine in World Cup qualifiers over the summer. Post-match, Pellegrini stressed he was unconcerned with the result and went on to admit he expects to see some new additions arriving soon:

“The players were clear with what they had to do in this game. I spoke with them before the match and we had four or five days working together. We’re not prepared to play the way we want them to play so this was a normal match for pre-season. I’m not worried and this is what we expected. We are not in a hurry to bring new players in but we are clear that we need two or three more before the season begins. It’s difficult to say a date for any new arrivals, but before July finishes I think we will have more players.”

Post-match reports suggest Yaya Toure will be assessed by the club’s medical staff after limping off on 84 minutes.

C.S. Cartagines 0 Fulham 3
The Cottagers got off to a convincing start in the opening match of their Costa Rica tour. While Martin Jol took the opportunity to utilise 22 players over the 90 minutes – with nine changes occurring at the break – there’s no surprise to learn it was Dimitar Berbatov who inflicted most of the damage with a first-half double. The Bulgarian slotted home a Patjim Kasami pass to open the scoring before notching a spot-kick after John Arne Riise had been fouled in the box. Bryan Ruiz added the third on 73 minutes, firing home after collecting a pass from Hugo Rodallega.

I honestly couldn't give two figs about getting a low ID - I was online during the launch last year but deliberately held back on registering as I didn't want my ID to be that low (I'm sure that seems perverse to some!)

I'm also something of a killjoy when it comes to 'funny' team names - they are almost invariably contrived and unamusing, I'm more likely to go for something which means something to me and my minileague members rather than the tortured wordplay which crops up so often.

Wow, I appear to be in a bad mood! 😉

have either of you tried this before?

Thing I worry about is getting 3 cheapies from a team isn't easy, your looking at 4.5, 4.5, 5 at best. For both. Assuming you spend 7m on the heavy hitter, thats 35m minimum on defence. Is that a touch on the hight side?

                Not with triple, no.

I think the Soton trio will be fine at 4.5 each, but it's the Norwich trio that are the worry as it's possible that they could be 5 each. That's why I said above it's totally dependant on the prices of these defenders and also other defenders which I could get instead. The heavy hitter would likely be 6 (Azpi) if Chelsea have the much anticipated DGW.

it's a risky strategy but could pay huge dividends. a clean sheet could mean minimum 18 pts.

would be interesting to see what the combo would have returned last year. or a similar combo with rotating cheap defenders, as soton were fairly leaky under Adkins, but much tigher after he left

A warm pre-season welcome to all, time for a first post in the new format (I think!).

Have noticed the speculation rumble on about Man Utd's prospects post Fergie and thought I'd offer up a nice little 'stat' that i came across whilst listening to the Guardian football podcast (good but no scoutcast by any stretch).

I''m afraid I cannot reference as it was several months ago but one of the pundits from a stat based organisation highlighted that, over the course of the premier league, only 3 managers had consistently produced finish positions which out performed their total spend on transfers and wages.

    1. Sir Alex
    2. David Moyes
    3. Big Sam

I particularly enjoy the different areas of the league in which these managers often operated in (granted big Sam was in Everton 6th-8th territory with Bolton or a brief period). But what i think that we may read into it is:

    1. Few managers add any noticeable value to their clubs
    2. Transfer budgets and the amount of wages paid is a goo indication of final league position
    3. As long as Moyes can carry his past performance into the bigger world, bigger spending at Old Trafford, results should not differ too much from the current paradigm.

And 4. Big Sam probably deserves more respect.

Can't wait for the season ahead, good luck all.

Yes that does sound implausible given his early success.

The only thing which makes me think it must stills rand is that most if the Guardian pundits are gunners and never miss a chance to blow the trumpet for them where possible.

Perhaps, after the early success, Arsenal spend around the 4the highest and finish 4th a lot.

I think Arsene does spend a bit more than we often think, but rarely/never on the scale of the Manchester clubs or Chelsea.

Players like Reyes, Arshavin, Walcott and Chamberlain all topped 10 million if I remember correctly. And whilst I am sure their players aren't on Rooney esque salaries, there will be a good deal of the first team squad on 60k a week plus- Everton won't offer this to many of their squad and have broken the top 4 on occasion.

Were the stats only for managers who have managed for a minimum number of seasons? There are probably not many who have been PL managers for more seasons than those 3 (Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp perhaps, but who else?). But it does show yet again how stupid Venkys were to sack Big Sam from Blackburn!

I rate him, he would do a job for a good club in England, prone to the occasional mistake but most defenders are.

I always thought Vertonghen was the best of those 3, he hasn't been bad defensively since he came in, he will improve has they get a more settled back line with some good players to play alongside him!

By the way as far as the PL is concerned allure = money. That's why they want to go there. They could live in a hotter climate in Spain, play better style of football in Germany, but they would get more money in England.

I agree with you re vert, he wasn't bad defensively but he wasn't great either. He might improve this year after settling in last year. Verm is not a terrible defender either but we are judging them on big reputations which I don't think they live up to.

What language you trying to learn? I found Rosetta Stone very slow to pick up anything as its more a memory test than anything as its about clicking pictures associated with a little audio clip for various sentences with no lesson as such to teach you the words. I’d recommend the Michel Thomas audio tapes, cover a lot of the main languages and you can pick up the basics very quick with those.

I've worked abroad for many years, Light Knight, and at the moment I'm using Rosetta Stone to learn Korean vocabulary. You really have to find the system that works for you when it comes to language learning and practice 30 minutes every day minimum.
If you are trying to learn Spanish/French/Italian/German I would recommend "Michel Thomas' CD's, they worked well for me.
If the language is non-European then Rosetta Stone is a good place to start. 'Pimsleur' is another good option. If you have access to a local library, you might get to try a copy.
      Hope that helps

I was wondering why did Bayern sign Thiago? It has nothing to do with me being a United fan but the move seems illogical to me. I understand why Thiago wanted to go there to win trophies and play amongst great players and his former manager who applauds hum.
Bayern midfield is pretty settled and doesn't need to be disturbed. With all the midfielders they have, who'll play in the middle? Front 3 is Ribery, Mandzzukic and Robben and that's unlikely to change. So we have Schweini, Thiago, Kroos, Martinez, Gotze, Gustavo, Muller all fighting for 3 places. Even if Martinez plays a CB, all these players fighting for 3 spots is a bit too much.
I can see Thiago, Schweini and Kroos playing in the middle and maybe Martinez at the back. Why splash so much money for Gotze then?

    I've been thinking about the ultimate game, and I think it should be possible to put together a pretty nice team;

    5.0, 4.5, 4.0
    5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 4.5. 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0
    Bale 12, hazard 10, Walcott 10, couthino 8, miralles 7, llalana 5.5, 5.0. 4.5
    Rvp 13.5, aguero 11, carroll 7, bony 7, 5.0, 4.5

Gives coverage to absolutely everyone, with some good bench players for when injuries kick in. Id be tempted to upgrade to one expensive defender, but rotating 8 into 3 should be good enough.

Id also like to patent the idea of having a 4.0 third keeper who is the real life back up to one of your main keepers (e.g. vorm and tremmel). Can we call it the Bedknobs Banker?

I've got a plan for my FPL team, not doing UFPL.

      5.0 4.5. Two rotating keepers.
      5.0 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0. A three-way rotation (5.0 4.5 4.0) and two-way rotation (4.5 4.5).
      12.0 10.0 8.5 7.0 5.0. Bale, Hazard, Coutinho, Mirallas and a 5.0.
      25.5. Two strikers equalling 19.5/20.0 and a 5.5/6.0.

Cheap rotation players at the back. 6 players always playing from the front 8, with the 1 from the other 2 playing. Just wish the damn game would open already.

Hopefully i've overestimated Cout/Mirallas price so I can add a bit to the frontline.

Also I think they have left it too late to launch a new cash game as people will be concentrating on their fpl team with the season ko 4 weeks from Saturday.

It will take time to digest the rules of this new game and work out some sort of strategy. With only a few weeks tinker time I reckon they will not got much of a take up due to their tardiness in launching it.

I rate him a lot. Possibly the best opposition player i have seen in the league the last 2 seasons. Really powerful and skillful, and a great finisher. Reminds me a bit of Yakubu when he was young and good. Sometimes looks lazy but he's not really.

Much better player than RvW. Nothing like Kezman, the league has improved since then as you have seen with all the successful transitions the likes of Suarez, Ruiz, Dembele, Tiote etc have made. Alves was just a 1 season wonder by the way.

Ruiz had a great record prior to his arrival too though (27 goals in 37 dutch league and cup games in 09/10) but bony with 33 in 25 league games last year does look a better bet than ruiz alright.

Alves may have been a one season wonder but he got 34 gls in 31 games in that season.

Yeah this would concern me from an FPL perspective.

Only bonus may be that it messes with pricing in that either both players get reduced slightly (like Sorensen and Begovic were) or that they stick with Howard as the main keeper at say 5.5, Robles as back up at 4.5 and then Martinez selects Robles as his man.

To be honest, FPL always seem to price Howard at a level which makes him so unattractive. More expensive than the centre halves for clean sheets - and then there is Leighton.

      Ahh, Leighton.

The only thing cheering me up on my drive to work this morning was the thought that maybe, just maybe, I'd be able to spend half my day picking the first draft of my FPL team. Now I'll actually have to work, absolute nightmare

      🙂

I've handled the waiting far better this summer than in previous seasons. Now I know it's so close I'm beginning to get impatient, however.

        Should be £2 - £5

Anything more would be wrong as its a brand new creation .

Still 50k+ will do it so a decent profit would be gained .
I'm guessing FPL creators want to oust out regulars wanting to win decent prizes like those given out by the tabloids .
