Pre-Season

Pre-Season Friendlies – Weekend Round-Up

David Moyes, Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Martinez all suffer debut defeats in a weekend that saw 10 Premier League clubs take part in friendly action. Arsenal kicked off their summer with an emphatic win in Thailand, Iago Aspas earned the plaudits from Brendan Rodgers after an impressive 45 minute sub appearance in Liverpool’s cruise at Preston and Dimiatr Berbatov was at the double as Fulham kicked off their Costa Rica tour with a victory.

Den Haag 0 Swansea 1
Swansea ended their tour of Holland on Saturday afternoon with a fourth consecutive win. Michael Laudrup’s side now return to the UK having triumphed in all of their friendlies on Dutch soil – the Swans boss once again rang the changes during the game, replacing eight of his starting XI at half-time. Debut boy Wilfried Bony climbed off the bench to replace Michu as the lone forward after the break, though failed to find the net – that honour went to Wayne Routledge, who chipped home the winner after a superb Jonjo Shelvey assist.

Singha All Stars XI 1 Man United 0
David Moyes tasted defeat in his first match in charge at United. The Red Devils went down narrowly in a match played in “29-degree heat, with 75% humidity”, according to the club’s official website. With the likes of Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa handed extended rests, and Wayne Rooney flying home injured, it was left to Danny Welbeck to lead the line – United spurned a batch of chances to equalise, though new boy Wilfried Zaha came closest – he hit the woodwork after being introduced off the bench just after the hour mark.

Post-match, Moyes again dismissed suggestions that Rooney was set to exit Old Trafford and proceeded to stress the importance of the forward for the season ahead:

“Overall my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we get an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him. Wayne has a major role to play because we need to try and get him as many goals as we possibly can. Wayne can play up-top, I think he can play dropped in. I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to be able to use Danny Welbeck, Chicharito as well. I want to try and give myself as many options as possible”

These quotes have spawned a series of reports this morning, suggesting that Rooney is set for a bench role under Moyes, although it’s clear that the new United boss has expressed a desire to play them both in tandem. It remains to be seen if this does materialise with Moyes favouring a 4-5-1 at Everton and with Kagawa well suited to role up in support of Van Persie.

Elsewhere, Moyes went on to look for the positives in the weekend defeat, taking time to praise both Zaha and fellow-youngster Adnan Januzaj for their respective displays:

“I thought Adnan played well tonight and was a plus for us. He was the pick of the group. It’s always good when you give a young player a chance and he shows up, which I thought he did tonight. And the more he plays like that, the more opportunities he’s liable to get. Wilfried did well and gave us something a little different. We’ll see how Wilfried does. We brought him here to give him a chance. It’s the first time I’ve worked with him, the first time I’ve really had the chance to see him up close, so he’ll certainly be part of the squad and we’ll see where we can fit him in.”

Bournemouth 0 West Ham 2
Sam Allardyce handed both Momo Diarra and Joey O’Brien their first game time of pre-season, with the former Bolton man replacing Guy Demel after the break. The Ivorian supplied the cross for Kevin Nolan’s opener – the Hammers skipper has now scored in each of the last two but was subbed off on 51 minutes as a precaution after picking up a knock. Jack Collison also found the net as Allardyce’s side maintained their 100% winning record in a match that saw Dutchman Orlando Engelaar earn game time as a triallist. Andy Carroll (heel) and George McCartney (knee) remain on the sidelines for the Hammers.

Preston 0 Liverpool 4
Brendan Rodgers gave all four of his new summer recruits the chance to impress at Deepdale; Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure featured from the start while Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto climbed off the bench at half-time. Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock from the spot after being hauled down in the box within 15 minutes, while youngster Jordan Ibe hammered home the second from long range. Aspas was the standout performer, though – he teed up Raheem Sterling for the Reds’ third before grabbing the fourth with an impressive 25-yard strike. Injury-wise, Daniel Sturridge remains on the sidelines, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly returned after long-term problems, but Steven Gerrard was omitted despite returning to full training. After the match, Rodgers was quick to praise Aspas’ impact:

“Iago works hard; he’s got a trick in and around the box and he excites supporters. He drifts well in between the lines and always wants to receive the ball. But what I like is that he wants to score goals. He’s looking to create and combine or go solo by himself and get a shot in. His goal was a terrific strike.”

Tamworth 0 West Brom 4
Steve Clarke’s side cruised to victory in a behind-closed-doors match against the Conference outfit. Nicolas Anelka teed up James Morrison for the opener before Shane Long headed home the second just prior to the half-hour mark. The Baggies boss made 10 changes at the break and saw Markus Rosenberg notch the third courtesy of a Gabriel Tamas cross, while Saido Berahino completed the scoring, with Billy Jones supplying the final pass.

Indonesia XI 0 Arsenal 7
The Gunners cruised to victory in their first match of the summer. Theo Walcott opening the scoring thanks to an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain assist before Chuba Akpom gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead at the break. Arsene Wenger made 10 changes in the second-half, with Olivier Giroud climbing off the bench to notch twice, while Lukas Podolski, Kris Olsson and Thomas Eisfield completed the scoring. Oxlade-Chamberlain was hailed as the most impressive performer for Wenger’s side before he made way at the break.

VfL Bochum 1 Aston Villa 1
Paul Lambert’s side registered their third successive 1-1 draw of the summer in the final fixture of their Germany tour. The Villa boss continued his policy of utilising the depth of his squad and replaced his starting XI after the break – new boy Nicklas Helenius scored for the second time in three games for the midlanders, an indication he’s taking little time to settle and may be ready to step up at centre-forward should Christian Benteke up and leave.

Austria Vienna 2 Everton 1
The Toffees were narrowly defeated by a host side gearing up for the start of their domestic season next week. Just one new signing – Joel Robles – featured, though Roberto Martinez started with the likes of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman, with Baines providing the assist for Vellios’ consolation. Martinez made eight changes at the break but Everton were unable to pull another goal back.

Supersport United 2 Man City 0
Manuel Pellegrini tasted defeat in his first match in charge of City on Sunday afternoon. The Chilean is clearly still in the initial stages of refining his squad and made wholesale changes after the break, with out-of-favour Scott Sinclair even afforded some game time having recovered from shoulder surgery. Elsewhere in the side, Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta have yet to join up with the tour after representing Argentine in World Cup qualifiers over the summer. Post-match, Pellegrini stressed he was unconcerned with the result and went on to admit he expects to see some new additions arriving soon:

“The players were clear with what they had to do in this game. I spoke with them before the match and we had four or five days working together. We’re not prepared to play the way we want them to play so this was a normal match for pre-season. I’m not worried and this is what we expected. We are not in a hurry to bring new players in but we are clear that we need two or three more before the season begins. It’s difficult to say a date for any new arrivals, but before July finishes I think we will have more players.”

Post-match reports suggest Yaya Toure will be assessed by the club’s medical staff after limping off on 84 minutes.

C.S. Cartagines 0 Fulham 3
The Cottagers got off to a convincing start in the opening match of their Costa Rica tour. While Martin Jol took the opportunity to utilise 22 players over the 90 minutes – with nine changes occurring at the break – there’s no surprise to learn it was Dimitar Berbatov who inflicted most of the damage with a first-half double. The Bulgarian slotted home a Patjim Kasami pass to open the scoring before notching a spot-kick after John Arne Riise had been fouled in the box. Bryan Ruiz added the third on 73 minutes, firing home after collecting a pass from Hugo Rodallega.

All this talk about munich's squad depth is really depressing. I remember a few years ago debating with this German traveller in Prague about which team on paper was better and arsenal's really wasn't that far behind, looking at it today, not one of our players would start for them. Amazing how much a team can grow in 3/4 years.

    Hello FPL-ers 😯

I usually look into goalkeeper rotations at the start of each season but one thing I always intended to look at post-season is how well it actually works, but haven’t managed to get round to doing it until now. I have looked at all possible 210 goalkeeper pairings and ranked them in order of best value, hopefully it will be of some use in picking the best combination for the upcoming season.

    KEY POINTS

    Team Analysis

It is easy to look at the FPL score page to see which keepers did well last season, but the fact is only 4 of the leagues 20 goalkeepers finished the season playing every minute meaning some goalkeepers could have finished higher if they avoided injury. Therefore it will be a more useful analysis looking how each team’s goalkeepers scored across the 38 gameweeks for an indication of who to choose for next season.

    ‘Probable points’

The maximum points of each goalkeeping combo can be worked out by taking the highest points of the two goalkeepers gameweek by gameweek, but in reality there are some weeks where you make the ‘wrong’ decision and your sub keepers double digit haul is sat on the bench staring at you right up until the next weeks deadline.
Take GW26 for example, Stoke faced Reading at home with odds of 2.6 for a clean sheet (ie. 38% chance) so Begovic would be the obvious choice to play in goal; whilst WBA were away to Liverpool who had just put 5 past Norwich the previous week and they had slim clean sheet odds of 9/1 (ie. 10% chance). So inevitably Foster recorded a 14 point haul with a clean sheet and a penalty save and Begovic managed a two pointer, in that situation you were only ever going to end up with 2 points.
So looking back on last season I have used the clean sheet odds for every single PL fixture, taking the score from whichever goalkeeper had the highest clean sheet percentage out of each goalkeeper pairing. This would give a ‘probable points total’ for any two goalkeepers over the season. Where there was a ‘coin flip’ situation where there was little between both goalkeepers clean sheet odds then the highest score would be taken between the two.

    Value Factor

To compare goalkeeper pairings I will sort by ‘probable value’ which is the ‘probable points total’ divided by the cost of the goalkeeper pairing. This would rank the best value for money goalkeeper pairings.

    Home/Away Rotations

Rescheduled fixtures meant that home/away rotations vary from the figures of the start of the season, I have counted double gameweeks as a home fixture. For instance Arsenal and Tottenham only rotate 35/38 rather than 38/38, this is because Arsenal’s games in GW19 and GW29 were rescheduled to different gameweeks when Spurs had away games and Arsenal had a DGW in GW23 when Spurs were playing at home.

Here is a link to the goalkeeper rankings in full:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuYq0oiM_pE-dGJyTGlweXpGXy1wTUgxcHRoRXFCaFE&usp=sharing

    OBSERVATIONS

Expensive goalkeepers not worth the premium

Paying 6m+ for a goalkeeper will have only typically earn you an extra 20 points or so compared to a budget goalkeeper. Also considering that midfielders and strikers account for the majority of the highest point scorers, any extra budget afforded to spend in those areas would be worthwhile. Perhaps during the January wildcard it may be an option to buy a more expensive goalkeeper as teams historically have a tendency to tighten up and keep more clean sheets later in the season, value will also have less importance as team value increases.

    Away fixtures shouldn’t be ignored

There were 116 home clean sheets and 84 away clean sheets last season, so 42% came away from home which is higher than I thought it would be. Therefore I think the success of rotating goalkeepers with high H/A rotations may be overstated and it is better to look closer at how the fixtures dovetail to get consistently high clean sheet chances, irrelevant to whether they are at home or away. There are also plenty of goalkeepers near the top of the rankings which also don't have that high H/A rotations which would also imply the same idea.

Bench fodder is high risk, low reward

The extra 0.5m spent on a second goalkeeper may be the most important across your whole team as having two goalkeepers fixtures to choose from gives a lot more flexibility and more importantly as the rankings indicate, more points. But the main argument not to have a non playing sub keeper would be that simply very few goalkeepers each year finish the season having played every minute. Jaaskelainen and Begovic were both ever present, another reason why they proved so popular, with Joe Hart and Simon Mignolet being the only other two. Only 6 goalkeepers managed to play in all 38 games in the previous 2 seasons as well, meaning that it is highly likely that you will have to call on your second goalkeeper at some point over the season.

    Goalkeepers first, rotations second

It doesn't matter how well any two given teams' fixtures rotate if they don't keep clean sheets then you aren't going to get many points! Take last season, Julio Cesar and Ali Al-Habsi rotated 32/38 yet because neither kept many clean sheets they were ranked 201 out of a possible 210 combinations with a probable points total of 118. For the upcoming season I would advise shortlisting which goalkeepers you think will do well then afterwards look at which rotate we'll from that list. Hull and Crystal Palace rotate H/A in all of their matches next season but I think they are prime candidates for falling into the rotation trap as I don't think they will keep many clean sheets.

      That is simply excellent.

Interesting to see Reina as the only goalkeeper interrupting the flow of cheap goalkeepers at the top of the probable value ratings, if Mignolet comes in at 5.5 I'll be trying to pair him with a 4.5 chap with good fixtures at the appropriate times.

Yeah perhaps 6m is the cut off point for top goalkeepers being value. Budget goalkeepers get more save points so it seems paying that extra 2m for guaranteed clean sheets just isn’t worth paying. Although if the funds allow it I’ll go for a more expensive keeper in the second wildcard, de Gea was the keeper to have in the second half of the season – gutted that I bottled going for the de Gea/Boruc combo last minute on my January wildcard.

Yep - the switch to a bigger team's goalkeeper/defence at the winter wildcard stage seems worthwhile from all that I've seen over the last few seasons - I'm adamant I'm playing that tactic this year.

You can use the same logic I guess. It is a bit trickier to analyse with defenders as each team usually starts 4 of them each week and they vary in price and often play a smaller percentage of games over the season. With cheap defenders not bridging the gap with the save point bonuses I would imagine expensive defenders are more worth it in comparison to expensive goalkeepers at least.

          True.

One more question on the data. How many times within a rotation did a clean sheet actually happen at odds the bookies weren't expecting and which combos did this effect the most? I see the the Bego/Schwarzer combo was the first legitimate paring that you could of had without transfer etc throughout the season. Was their rotation average odds less than those around them?

Basically, could you add a column for average odds throughout GWs?

One thing I discovered last year when analysing goalkeeper rotation last year is that rotation was actually highly unlikely to gain significant points over playing Bego/Mig week in week out. The fact that Federici and Ruddy are so highly prized in your rankings goes a long way to agreeing with me.

This is why I would go with your last paragraph. Choose your first keeper alone and pick an appropriate sub 4.5 keeper to match. The second keeper is not there to rotate but to provide basic cover imo.

Rotation is a massive fallacy as it is almost impossible to predict defensive returns on a regular basis. Without accurate methods to predict clean sheets with above 80% success rate there is very little point putting any effort into rotation.

By bench fodder I mean having a non-playing keeper is too risky as you will likely have to play them at some point in the season. Having any playing keeper as ‘basic cover’ like you say is definitely worthwhile, even if you don’t believe in rotation and they are just there for backup.

Although I would argue that rotation does improve your defensive returns. For instance in 31 of the 38 games Begovic and Ruddy rotated, in 31 of them the highest scorer was the goalkeeper with the greater clean sheet odds, so if you play the odds you should reap the benefits. It’s about looking at the clean sheet odds over simply H/A was the point I was trying to make, hopefully I can forecast the CS odds for next season and look at the best goalkeeping options once prices are out.

By your own analysis by rotating Ruddy and Begovic based on betting odds gives a 30pt boost to score, which is 27%. Now that itself is wonderful.

However, what are the odds of you selecting the appropriate pairing? By your very own statistics a lot of pairing do substantially worse than those two. I am not sure it is wise to only look at the best solution with hindsight, as the average performs substantially worse.

Well in most cases its fairly obvious which keeper to play as for the majority of gameweeks there is a clear edge towards playing one keeper over the next based purely on their chances of getting a clean sheet. I allowed for a 5% variance in clean sheet odds for the ‘coin flip’ scenario, for Begovic/Ruddy 29 of the 38 gameweeks there was a clear edge towards one goalkeeper so for the remaining 9 gameweeks the higher value was taken.

The same method was used for all goalkeepers so the additional points boost would be roughly relative for all pairings so the rankings should still be accurate. It’s more of an analysis of the big picture rather than the specifics of each individual pairings exact score. There is a strong correlation between clean sheet odds and total points scored so taking the higher value usually was that of the higher CS% in the coin flip scenario anyway.

Hopefully that made some sort of sense...

    The FPL Poem

Everyone rushes to get their ID number,
Wondering if former giants like Aguero can awake from their slumber,
With plans in hand relating to rotation,
Hoping come GW38 they'll be feeling elation.

    Decisions to be made,
    Players to be picked,
Never bench, Never captain Leighton Baines,
Players so tense you can already see their veins 😯

    Aspirations are high,
    Ranks are low,
    Can your team survive?
It's Monday night and your hopes are pinned on a defender worth four point five.

Varying plans in the buildup to Christmas,
    What do you aim for?
    A very high rank,
    Or money in the bank?

    When to stay?
    When to jump?
Rolling by is a Kagawa bandwagon,
Could it be the year of the Dragon?

    Who to sub?
    Who to captain?
RVP looks like picking up some points,
Can you really rely on his joints?

    Several players are injured,
    The rest are suspended,
    You've got a wildcard,
You could take a faithful leap
Or you can go to FFS and get the advice of a sheep.

    We're nearing the end
You could do with a hero
    In the absence of Vassell
    Enter Demel.

First HC post actually, has it been a positive change?

On another note, Robles seems to have been given the no 1 shirt, so this could spell the end for Howard. Deulofeu has been given 10, not sure how much of an indication into starts that is though

Sky game. Can't fit a decent city mid or striker in for Paulinho/RVW due to price restraints (I can only swap for Nasri but he's not nailed on) :/

I think Paulinho will be a strong player on this game because they give bonus points for tackles and passes made. (Arteta was one of the highest bonus points earners last year).

How is this vote worthy of down vote?

It is informative, potentially FPL related, definitely not a down vote material

He is being targetted. Rest easy knowing that whoever is targetting will have votes that are utterly meaningless to rep mechanics.

Why when people post long hot topic posts, does everyone just roll over in agreement with it? Surely I am not the only one who feels it is necessary to question everything. I could write a long post telling you that it RVP, Cavani and Torres is the way forward, but it wouldnt make it right. Without debate/peer review the presented information is useless, start questioning, it wont offend anyone.

I don't agree with this post, you have no factual evidence to back up your assertions and it looks like cavani will be going to france.

Because thorough research that brings to light previously unseen facts is interesting. Also these tend to require a certain amount of explanation and gives a basis for well thought out conclusions. Naturally this requires more than just a few sentences.

But yes I also think that long posts do require some peer review and I'd suggest most hot topic posters welcome this.

Thorgan Hazard is going back out on loan to Zulte Waregem for the forthcoming season.

Don't think anyone considered him to be a serious challenger for a Chelsea midfield place, but still.
