Arsenal have officially confirmed that Robin Van Persie will be out of action for a minimum of three weeks.

The Dutchman suffered a knee problem whilst scoring the equaliser in the Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham on Sunday. This means that the injury prone forward will miss the Premier League games against Sunderland and West Brom, as well as the Champions League clash with Barcelona at the very least.

Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed that Van Persie could be set for an even longer lay-off…

“Unfortunately, we had bad news on the scan and he will be out for the next three weeks for sure. It could be longer. The shortest delay we can imagine is three weeks [so] he is definitely out for Barcelona.”

Van Persie has been in tremendous Fantasy Premier League (FPL) form in recent weeks and this will comes as a hugely frustrating kick in the teeth to his 18.3% of owners. In his last five games for the Gunners, he amassed a quite remarkable 63 points. Since the turn of the year the striker has managed to score 10 Premier League goals in just seven games and was looking unstoppable. Predictably however, an injury has brought his seemingly unstoppable form to a halt.

We should of course expect big sales. With Van Persie FPL price having risen from 9.5 to 10.3 in just five Gameweeks, many Fantasy Managers will now have to swallow a fairly significant loss of funds. Nonetheless we are likely to see the FPL transfer market flooded with cash ahead of gameweek 29, with plenty of activity on the way.

Wayne Rooney will be the most obvious like-for-like replacement. The Manchester United forward has found some form, scoring 4 in his last four games. Other options include Fantasy favourites such as Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez, although, as our Watchlist reveals (updated today – more on that later), Chelsea’s strikers will also be a temptation given the fixtures ahead. Nicolas Anelka is perhaps the strongest option here, although security over his starting role is in question. Should Fernando Torres impress against United tonight, we are likely to see renewed interest in him this week. Lower down the price bracket, Bolton’s Daniel Sturridge will surely grab further attention – an option that will free up funds for squad investment elsewhere. Perhaps even Van Persie’s likely replacement in the Arsenal starting XI deserves consideration – step forward Nicklas Bendtner.

Maybe not. A poll is now live on your frontpage to collect your views on the ideal RVP replacement.

Shifting attention away from Van Persie, Arsene Wenger also confirmed that Cesc Fabregas could yet make the Barcelona tie as he continues a recovery from his hamstring injury.

“Cesc is looking possible [for that game]…He is making quick and good progress. It is possible.”

Given the absence of both Van Persie and Fabregas for the gameweek 29 fixture with Sunderland this weekend, we can surely expect Samir Nasri to be a prime target for Fantasy Managers. Nasri has climbed into the top five in our Watchlist and we will bring you a full article on his prospects later this week.

Anyone contemplating on keeping rvp? My guess is he'll miss 3-4 games tops, and I have 0 in the bank currently, so I wouldn't be able to buy him back (I bought him when he was 9.5)

Roger Johnson has played 90 min of every game and has been "injured" going into at least one that I know of recently. And has finished at least 2 games "injured."

I'm pretty certain Birmingham defenders are incapable of sitting out a game.

    I say he's fit.

You see the peach of a story on twitter about Merson?

Going on about how Wenger should learn from Alex Mc at Birmingham and buy two proper centre halves like Johnson and Scott Dann.

Marcotti pointed out that Merson was manager of Dann while at Walsall:

          - He put him in the reserves
          - Then allowed him to go onloan to 2 non league teams.

Dann only got games when Merson finally left

          😀

I hope so. Got him in my team.

Should've done RVP to Rooney last weekend. Should've known Van Persie would break some part of his body at some point during the week when he had no FPL game.

It was obvious and sadly too predictable really.

Looking at Lampard , Nasri and either 1 bir def or 1 bir striker and an other dependent on whether i get Zigic or Carr.
                12 pointer maybe.
Unless i do a boring but maybe better Anelka and Nasri in and ignore Lampard

heres my likely team for this week without any transfers, only got the one free.
im holding a nice lead in my main league but am a fair bit behind in a larger one

    foster
    baines coleman r.johnson rafael
    nani cahill (c) lennon young
    berb odem

subs kingston adam kelly VP 1.9mill bank

i could prob get away with it this week with odem if VP doesnt play coming in

i might as well keep adam now hes only got 1 game to play,
rafaels looking very dodgy for that RB role at utd it seems, odems lost his form and starting position and kellys injured for a few months so those are the players id be looking at subbing in the future

    choices for subs are
VP ---> tevez (or anyone 12mill or under)
    or
    kelly —> kolerov
    or
lennon—> nasri …. better long term tho no real need atm
    or
odem —–> zigic or any forward over 7.1

i dont mind saving the transfer for next week, im just not taken with rafael or berb atm and Odem doesnt look great.

    thoughts?

      Probably Bent or Anelka.

Although I have enough to go for one of the bigger Chelsea boys. Torres and Drogba hitting form would be great.

    A. Walcott & RVP -> Cahill & Bendtner
    or
    B. Walcott & RVP -> Nasri & Saha/Beckford

Or just not take a 4 point hit and keep RVP until next week when hopefully a better forward option spring to mind?

    Replacement discussion for RVP.

Rooney - Obvious really. ManUtd still looking strong, and he'll start as long as he's fit. Decent record away from home too.

Bent - Solid fixtures, solid player.

Anelka - Potential differential playing in the hole, Chelsea fixtures good from GW 31 onwards.

Torres/Drogba - Expensive, but if Chelsea hit form, could be heavyweight scorers that players who haven't planned well can't afford.

Balotelli - 7.9 is a great price. Loose cannon though, and fixtures not so good after this week.

Bendtner/Chamakh - Arsenal cover for RVP. Don't like either much, but if you fancy Arsenal to continue their title push, they could be a risk worth taking.

I'll be getting Nasri for my Arsenal coverage. Never getting Chamakh in he always did next to nothing when I had him before.

Bent is the one I'll probably go for although that means 3 Villa players. I have Tevez and Rooney already and don't fancy Anelka.

Bent, solid player?! - hes playing decoy in midfield with hardly 20 passes total in games (not all completed) and barely getting a shot a game.

Balotelli wont start premierleague games once silva is around

Anelka ( you and DB must be exchanging love letters) in a team with torres and a returning to health drogba to accomodate, not to mention malouda.

However, the copenhangan game is irrelevant, the main thing you you look for in a player is guaranteed starts. Everything else is secondary.

Camzy, you've given me some cracking advice in the past so a polite request for some more. My current team is:

    Foster, Begovic
    Vidic, Coleman, Djourou, Kelly, Walker
    Nani, VdV, Young, Bentley, Barton
    Tevez, RVP, Odem

So, a number of injured/out of favour players there. I think I have to get rid of RVP and will decide on who comes in this evening. Also considering replacing Odem or bringing in Nasri for Barton who I unfortunately bought only last week. I've got 1 free transfer. Is it worth the 4-point hit?
