Scout Report – Leroy Fer

Norwich boss Chris Hughton dipped back into the summer transfer market on Saturday evening to acquire the services of midfielder Leroy Fer from Dutch club FC Twente. The 23-year-old, who arrives at Carrow Road on a four-year contract, is believed to have cost the Canaries around £7m and is the club’s sixth new signing over the close season as Hughton strengthens his squad in an attempt to improve upon last term’s eleventh place finish.

Fer – whose mooted move to Everton last winter was cancelled after he failed a medical – sailed through the Canaries assessment and will now join up with Hughton’s side once he receives international clearance. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Norwich boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

“We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has. He’s a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League – but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City.”

The History

A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Fer was handed a first-team opportunity midway through the 2007-08 season as an 18-year-old. After establishing his place as a regular, he went on to play 103 times in the Eredivisie for the club, producing 14 goals and 12 assists, before he was picked up by FC Twente just prior to the closure of the 2011 summer transfer window in a deal believed to be around the €5m mark.

Fer then spent two full seasons at FC Twente and despite being utilised as a defensive midfielder, still managed to chip in with 13 goals and seven assists over 52 league appearances. In Europe, in particular, his contribution was key, with six goals and a pair of assists during Twente’s Europa League run last term. On the international stage, Fer has featured at every level from Under 17 to Under 21 a total of 50 times, finding the net on 10 occasions, including two goals in four appearances at this summer’s Euro Under 21 Championships. He has also represented the senior Dutch side on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Bouncer”, the six foot two Fer will add a real presence to the Norwich central midfield. While he’s versatile enough to play in “the hole” and has even featured as emergency right-back for Feyenoord, it’s a fair assumption that he’s been purchased as a defensive midfielder and should jump ahead of the likes of Bradley Johnson, Alex Tettey and Johnny Howson in the first-team pecking order.

While Norwich were defensively decent last term from a Fantasy perspective, with 10 clean sheets accrued, Hughton will still be looking to address a record which saw the Canaries concede 58 times in his first season at the helm. Fer’s physical attributes look tailor-made for the Premier League, with a decent disciplinary record of just eight yellow cards in the last three seasons suggesting he’s timely in the challenge, too.

Fer’s attacking output will also be key to his guaranteed game time. Bearing in mind that Johnson, Tettey and Howson managed a mere three strikes between them all season, Norwich certainly need to improve upon a measly 41 goals in 2012/13 – a tally only better than Stoke and QPR, with 34 and 30 respectively.

Yet to be added to either the Sky Sports game or the Sun Dream Team, Fer is expected to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Despite a strong opening schedule which sees Hughton’s men host Everton, Southampton and Villa and travel to Hull in the opening five Gameweeks, the Dutchman is likely to struggle for our attention – with Robert Snodgrass priced at 6.5, the former Leeds man looks the obvious candidate in the Norwich midfield after registering 152 points last time out. Fer’s installation in Hughton’s starting XI could see him benefit from the new FPL bonus system, however, and should also bode well for their defensive resilience in the season ahead, making the Norwich backline options just that little bit more enticing.

while im a huge fan of ben arfa, are u sure he can deliver this season?

I quite like it although it lacks a little bit of Arsenal, who could go rampant. Also what happens if Chelsea's dgkw is confirmed? Would that mean one of Bale or RVP had to go?

It is a non DGW draft. If we have a DGW i'll probably leave in some money in my draft. Arsenal i'm waiting to see what they do with the striker situation. A gut feeling that i have is this might be Chamberlain's breakthrough season. 7.0M bargain right there if so.

Wenger's been trying Ox out in the middle in pre season. He's also said that centre mid could be is preferred position, allowing his dribbling skills to take him swiftly into the box. If that happens then you could be right.

For me the Chelsea Dgw is key to whether or not I have RVP and Bale. If they have a Dgw, I'll start with three Chelsea and Bale but no RVP. If they don't I'll start with both of Bale and RVP. You can still get a good team with both in, just with a cheaper defence than I would like.

I'm still pondering. I have a team of RVP and Bale with Coutinho, Mirallais, Nolan, Koren, Lambert and Fletcher/Lambert, and my defence is 3 4.0s and Reid and Clyne. How does this sound ;)? (I have another team sheet with aguero and no rvp with a better defence but I'm still thinking which one should I use)

I actually quite like that one. Managed to get a good balance there. Still lacks a bit of Arsenal though, but I guess that's the price you pay for having RVP. Essentially its RVP v Walcott and a couple of small upgrades.

Thanks, the Snod/Kac/Brady 3 are bit nasty to look at. I do like Mata and with so many going Haz it could work well. With that said, Mata to Haz would give me 1m to make them better

the thing about starting with Mata over Haz is that you can downgrade. If you start with Haz and Mata starts firing then that's tricky.

Agreed. I am also a creature of habits (maybe good, maybe bad) Mata/Bale/RVP all good captains, Mata less so i guess.

I always believe in 2 cheap gks. Always like 1 'good' defender then 4 cheap.

              Lambert seems a bargain.

Been bitten too many times on unproven strikers and mids, for every Michu are many many failures.

Whittingham has to go surely. If you have him there's no way you can have any other iffy members of the front 8...this makes the first marginally better. What's wrong with Brady or Koren...at least they have set pieces.

They probably would but there'll be times when City only play 1 upfront. Aguero is flexible but Negredo only has 1 position, as an out and out striker. Makes me question Aguero's value, not necessarily his safety for starts.

Be interesting to see what price Negredo and Jovetic come in at. All three should play some point in each game, but it does present some rotation issues for Man City. Perhaps Silva is the safest option - he is priced quite kindly this year.

Strikers high price could be a precaution to avoid a "Lambert bandwagon" maybe. It's a thin line between making a player unavailable for the whole season and forcing a template team on everyone.

    Bale - 50.8

Fairly happy with this as a first stab. Will undoubtedly change ALOT with transfers (real life) but hows about this...

    Mannone - Boruc

    Koscielny - Zabaleta - Turner - Clyne - 4.0

    Bale - Hazard - Lampard - Mirallas - Thomas

    Aguero - Giroud - Anelka/Cornelious

How do you like this? Got the 3 Chelsea in case of DGW. The lack of an expensive striker is slightly annoying me but then I can't see any value in them

    Boruc - Foster
    Azpi - Coleman - Kaboul - Turner - Chester
    Bale - Hazard - Lampard - Snodgrass - Ramirez
    Sturridge - Berbatov - Kone

With a little bit in the left in the bank for Lamps -> Silva.

So I've currently got 9/15 which I am pretty sure on:

    Ruddy | Boruc
    Coleman
    Bale | Walcott | Coutinho | Mirallas
    Lukaku | Bony

Leaving 31m for the remaining 6.

Finding it hard to decide whether to go with:

    A) Hazard and leave myself 21.5m for the remaining 5
    or
    B) Snodgrass and have 24.5m for the remaining 5.

Really its choice of having another 5-5.5m~ defender and someone like Anelka/Rodriguez for the 3rd striker spot or having uber cheap 3rd striker and uber cheap defense.

    5m | 4m | 4m | 4m

    4.5m

    Vs

    5.5m | 4.5m | 4.5m | 4m

    6m

    I guess.

Still a lot of assuming that there will be a dgw1, but it's now 3 weeks after the dgw was announced last year and still no news.

Thanks all. This was my initial reasoning: Mannone has really nice Boruc rotation but he might be too risky. Mertesaker is better suited to the new bap system than Kos. I'd prefer Hull defence to Palace defence, hence Chester. And I don't like Aspas as an option. He's likely to be POO. Worth considering it all, thanks guys.

Don't know about u guys but in my opinion there are a few battles for starting positions that , if clearly decided in friendlies, could give us some amazing options come start of season.

For me whoever wins will give amazing value and could be players with amazing seasons:

    Migs - Reina
    Gibbs - Monreal
    Mannone - Westwood
    Redmond - Pilkington/Hoolahan
    Kaboul - Dawson
Oxlade with whoever he would have to oust (maybe walcott moved to striker - wishfull thinking)

Any of these players would provide tremendous value, most of them coming very cheap in very strong teams, most with amazing fixtures for the start of season.

Who do u see winning these battles? And who will be in your team in GW1?
For me monreal mignolet mannone will be huge this year

      1) I think this depends on whether Reina leaves. If he doesn't then i can see him remaining first choice.
      2) Don't think there is a clear winner here, and expect both to rotate in the season, especially with Gibbs' injury record
      3) Westwood
      4) Pilkington, i expect Redmond to mainly be an impact sub.
      5) Kaboul but probably not at the start of the season
      6) Don't think Oxlade will make an fpl impact yet, with Podolski/Walcott/Cazorla/Gervinho all able to play out wide.

Yup, really wish Monreal was first choice. After the end of last season I took every players points and divided them by there minutes and multiplied by 90 to get their points per 90 minutes. I know this isn't a true representation but I feel it gives a better view than points per game as player could only be on the pitch for 5 minutes and that would bring their average down.

Anyway Monreal was in 1st position for defenders at 5.69 points per 90. Would be a steal if he nails down the LB spot imo.

Only o'shea is nailed on. Roberge/Diakte vying for 2nd CB slot and we're still to sign our full backs for new season. Peruzzi could be a shot if he comes in at RB.

Don't get Wilshere. Your subs must be dirt cheap, make sure they're starters

    Alcaraz (4.5) Vs Coleman (5.0)

Alcaraz has scored three and assisted one in three seasons. So we're hoping for cleanies only there, right? That sounds optimistic.

Lots of different teams out there but so much will change in the next month. I still think RVP is going to creep into a few more teams probably mine included...

    Best pair of these two:
    A) Snodgrass + Lambert
    B) Ramirez + Carroll (with 0.5 spare)

If A, then I would have to downgrade one of Turner / Clyne / Coleman / Nastasic.

That's what I'm thinking. Who would you downgrade though? (Either way I would have 3 So'ton, by the way).
