Scout Report – Leroy Fer

Norwich boss Chris Hughton dipped back into the summer transfer market on Saturday evening to acquire the services of midfielder Leroy Fer from Dutch club FC Twente. The 23-year-old, who arrives at Carrow Road on a four-year contract, is believed to have cost the Canaries around £7m and is the club’s sixth new signing over the close season as Hughton strengthens his squad in an attempt to improve upon last term’s eleventh place finish.

Fer – whose mooted move to Everton last winter was cancelled after he failed a medical – sailed through the Canaries assessment and will now join up with Hughton’s side once he receives international clearance. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Norwich boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

“We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has. He’s a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League – but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City.”

The History

A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Fer was handed a first-team opportunity midway through the 2007-08 season as an 18-year-old. After establishing his place as a regular, he went on to play 103 times in the Eredivisie for the club, producing 14 goals and 12 assists, before he was picked up by FC Twente just prior to the closure of the 2011 summer transfer window in a deal believed to be around the €5m mark.

Fer then spent two full seasons at FC Twente and despite being utilised as a defensive midfielder, still managed to chip in with 13 goals and seven assists over 52 league appearances. In Europe, in particular, his contribution was key, with six goals and a pair of assists during Twente’s Europa League run last term. On the international stage, Fer has featured at every level from Under 17 to Under 21 a total of 50 times, finding the net on 10 occasions, including two goals in four appearances at this summer’s Euro Under 21 Championships. He has also represented the senior Dutch side on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Bouncer”, the six foot two Fer will add a real presence to the Norwich central midfield. While he’s versatile enough to play in “the hole” and has even featured as emergency right-back for Feyenoord, it’s a fair assumption that he’s been purchased as a defensive midfielder and should jump ahead of the likes of Bradley Johnson, Alex Tettey and Johnny Howson in the first-team pecking order.

While Norwich were defensively decent last term from a Fantasy perspective, with 10 clean sheets accrued, Hughton will still be looking to address a record which saw the Canaries concede 58 times in his first season at the helm. Fer’s physical attributes look tailor-made for the Premier League, with a decent disciplinary record of just eight yellow cards in the last three seasons suggesting he’s timely in the challenge, too.

Fer’s attacking output will also be key to his guaranteed game time. Bearing in mind that Johnson, Tettey and Howson managed a mere three strikes between them all season, Norwich certainly need to improve upon a measly 41 goals in 2012/13 – a tally only better than Stoke and QPR, with 34 and 30 respectively.

Yet to be added to either the Sky Sports game or the Sun Dream Team, Fer is expected to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Despite a strong opening schedule which sees Hughton’s men host Everton, Southampton and Villa and travel to Hull in the opening five Gameweeks, the Dutchman is likely to struggle for our attention – with Robert Snodgrass priced at 6.5, the former Leeds man looks the obvious candidate in the Norwich midfield after registering 152 points last time out. Fer’s installation in Hughton’s starting XI could see him benefit from the new FPL bonus system, however, and should also bode well for their defensive resilience in the season ahead, making the Norwich backline options just that little bit more enticing.

Will Amorebieta not start? I think Wlson should be a starter alright though!

Did Gouffran not start all the game he was fit for last season? There are very few decent 6.5 or under strikers.

In reply to Lawro. Not too sure about McShane alright. Is Chester more assured of starts?

Ah I thought the preferred forward line would be HBA Cisse Gouffran no? Was looking at Anelka alright and he could be very good value. Just need to find some sort of good rotation!

I can change the defenders. Good few 4.5 options

With RVP being so damn expensive and having tough fixtures to begin with (though it doesn't matter too much for him) and Negredo and/or Jovetic to Man City looking likely I reckon a front-line of Sturridge + 2 of Berbatov/Lambert and Carroll could be profitable.

    Something like;

    Ruddy Boruc
    Nastasic Koscielny 4.5 4.0 4.0
    Bale Walcott Hazard Mirallas 4.5
    Sturridge Berbatov/Lambert/Carroll

Problem is not many nailed on (C) options besides Bale...

Of course you'd be screwed if RVP went wild, but most of us Wildcard early anyway, right? 🙂

As I said over the page, if they sign a striker there is every chance Aguero is either rested against the rubbish teams, or plays second fiddle to someone like Negredo. 11M for his return's last year, when you look at Lambert's and Berbatov's at 3.5M less is surely overpriced?

But then you get to the 'form' argument. With another striker there, especially a player like Negredo, Aguero could find himself out wide at times. LamberBerbatov outperformed him last year after all..

    Major issues for me

Aguero -too expensive and possibly rested for bigger games/games prior to CL
Dzeko - not nailed on, but perhaps worth the risk if City don't buy Negredo

But having Aguero, Bale and RvP leaves serious issues in midfield according to most (i.e no room for another big hitter)

RvP for me, should be essential at the start as he's easier to take out then put in.

I can't agree with that theory. If you think the cheaper option + another big hitter elsewhere will go better than go with that. If it fails and RVP proves to be worth the mammoth price tag then get him in later...somehow...

Say 200 enter before GW1. 4% minimum drop out so at least 8 or more more on equal score would be eliminated.

Once I have the final number of entries at the GW2 deadline, I will have a table of "X" for each round & that will be the minimum amount of survivors. Those below that standard would be eliminated.

    RMT (Rate my Thoughts) 🙂

    Gold Dust

Defenders seem to be priced lower than previous seasons. Am not sure yet if the change to the bonus point system is to count for this or the introduction of UFPL (Ultimate Fantasy Premier League). If the latter is correct, then a whole raft of players are available for selection at cut down prices.

Eden Hazard being priced 1 million cheap than Juan Mata makes him the prime target for Chelsea potential double Gameweek, especially considering his quote earlier in the off-season claiming his last season performance was poor by his standards and he will go all out to improve for his new manager.

Three Everton Players could be wrongly classified giving us our first OOP players. This is mainly down to Roberto Martinez favour formation of 3-4-3. The three players are Kevin Mirallas, Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines for people unaware of them.

If Darren Bent gets his wish and leave Villa Park for first team football, he has the potential to make a mockery of his 6.5 mil price tag.

Shinji Kagawa at 8 mil could be a ready replacement for RVP in our squads. Am expecting Big things out of the Japanese playmaker after an introductory year to Premier League. His Hat-trick against Norwich last season shows the class the man possesses if he can adjust to life in the Premier League.

With the lack of transfer activity at Arsenal, Oliver Giroud is still the number 1 front man and at 8.5 mil is nicely priced to kick on from his own introductory season to the Premier League. He had better statistics last season than his output suggested for the members among us.

David Silva could be inline for a good season. Priced at 9 mil, the tweak in the bonus point system is well suited to the Spanish magicians’ play.

Simon Mignolet at 5.5 mil is cheap for a Liverpool goalkeeper. All we need now is for Pepe Reina to move on. A rotation with David Marshall of Cardiff is the best partnership for Mignolets' difficult fixtures and at 10mil in total, you won’t damage the balance of your squad in selecting this pair.

The 5 way rotation (Uber) is possible within the pricing. It comes in at 22.5 mil. 🙂

David Luiz at 6.5 mil is an interesting prospect still especially if Mourinho continues to play him as a holding midfielder.

    Fool's Gold

RVP has been priced higher than he should be compared to his compatriot front men. The question to ask yourself; is his reliability as your captain worth the 14 mil investment? Much will depend on Wayne Rooney and his performance for United. At 10.5 mil, a fully fit and motivated Rooney is better value.

Santi Carzorla is difficult to justify his 10 mil price tag when you consider Theo Walcott at 9.5 mil. The Englishman was the better point scorer over the second half of the season.

The Bale, RVP axis of power is mind-blowing expensive. At 26 mil to have the luxury of both players, we will surely be forced into picking one of last seasons main men.

Coutinho doesn’t escape a massive price rise. 9 mil for the “Under the Radar” sensation last season is steep for a player who hasn’t been tested fully within the Premier League. Think of Jelavic last season.

John Ruddy at 5 mil is disappointing. I had high hopes for Ruddy this season considering he was injured for most of last. With Turner and Garrido priced at 4.5 mil, there’s little point in selecting the Norwich stopper.

Matthew Lowton priced at 5 mil. An ever-present for Villa last season, Lowton was really finding his feet towards the back-end of last season and a price of 4.5 was expected. This would have given us a potential profitable entry into an improving Villa team. At 5 mil it’s now difficult to include Lowton in your rotation plans.

Phil Jones being priced higher than Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand at 6 mil. Its looks like FPL have taken no chances on Jones who I think will break into the United XI this season under David Moyes.

Papiss Cisse is still priced high at 8.5 mil. A disappointing campaign from both himself and the Club could have seen his price drop further. At 8.5 mil, you now will be gambling on Newcastle turning their fortunes around to the levels of two seasons ago.

Jan Vertonghen price is inflated when you consider the rest of the defensive market. It is now hard justify selecting the big Belgium international at 7 mil. I really think Spurs will be defensively sound this year but 7mil kind of covers this projected increase off.

FPL haven’t made the same mistake twice on a Swansea off-season signing. Wilfried Bony at 8 mil is certainly a gamble for a new player to the Premiership. His 31 goals in 30 appearance for his former Dutch club had triggered an alarm off in my head.

    Cheers 🙂

so wallcott need to score in order to have a chance to outscore santi in bps.

remember missed chance + off target etc. also lose points.
          losing posession too.
I see walcott not as attractive in the new bps system.

of course, in terms of threat, walcott still edge it.
I see santi a more consistent point source

You may be right on RvP but my logic on him is this

If Rooney turns out to be the better pick, making the move down is easy and allows more freedom, especially if you can keep 2 FTs rolled over. it will be much harder to get him in unless you are on a wc.

Morning chaps. Middle of a heatwave, first RMT of the season, loving it.

    Foster / Boruc

    Terry Merts Alcaraz Chester Turner

    Bale Lamps Hazard Cabaye Thomas

    Kun Sturridge Rod

There's some great value in defence I reckon, and if Cabaye stays at Toon, 6.5 is a steal.

I'm banking on the idea that he's there to link, like he did at Chelsea.

Would love to have Darren Bent instead of Long, if Bent moves to any of the promoted clubs.

However, Long doesn't seem like an awful choice at his price since he's #1

If he is then he's still worth his very cheap price if nailed on. Just not sure what his fitness levels and desire are like, just think Shane will put himself about and with no rotation with Lukaku this season has a clean run. Always easy to downgrade and spend elsewhere!

If Bent moves then i think he deserves serious consoderation, just has barely played for a couple of years!
