Scout Report – Leroy Fer

Norwich boss Chris Hughton dipped back into the summer transfer market on Saturday evening to acquire the services of midfielder Leroy Fer from Dutch club FC Twente. The 23-year-old, who arrives at Carrow Road on a four-year contract, is believed to have cost the Canaries around £7m and is the club’s sixth new signing over the close season as Hughton strengthens his squad in an attempt to improve upon last term’s eleventh place finish.

Fer – whose mooted move to Everton last winter was cancelled after he failed a medical – sailed through the Canaries assessment and will now join up with Hughton’s side once he receives international clearance. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Norwich boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

“We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has. He’s a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League – but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City.”

The History

A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Fer was handed a first-team opportunity midway through the 2007-08 season as an 18-year-old. After establishing his place as a regular, he went on to play 103 times in the Eredivisie for the club, producing 14 goals and 12 assists, before he was picked up by FC Twente just prior to the closure of the 2011 summer transfer window in a deal believed to be around the €5m mark.

Fer then spent two full seasons at FC Twente and despite being utilised as a defensive midfielder, still managed to chip in with 13 goals and seven assists over 52 league appearances. In Europe, in particular, his contribution was key, with six goals and a pair of assists during Twente’s Europa League run last term. On the international stage, Fer has featured at every level from Under 17 to Under 21 a total of 50 times, finding the net on 10 occasions, including two goals in four appearances at this summer’s Euro Under 21 Championships. He has also represented the senior Dutch side on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Bouncer”, the six foot two Fer will add a real presence to the Norwich central midfield. While he’s versatile enough to play in “the hole” and has even featured as emergency right-back for Feyenoord, it’s a fair assumption that he’s been purchased as a defensive midfielder and should jump ahead of the likes of Bradley Johnson, Alex Tettey and Johnny Howson in the first-team pecking order.

While Norwich were defensively decent last term from a Fantasy perspective, with 10 clean sheets accrued, Hughton will still be looking to address a record which saw the Canaries concede 58 times in his first season at the helm. Fer’s physical attributes look tailor-made for the Premier League, with a decent disciplinary record of just eight yellow cards in the last three seasons suggesting he’s timely in the challenge, too.

Fer’s attacking output will also be key to his guaranteed game time. Bearing in mind that Johnson, Tettey and Howson managed a mere three strikes between them all season, Norwich certainly need to improve upon a measly 41 goals in 2012/13 – a tally only better than Stoke and QPR, with 34 and 30 respectively.

Yet to be added to either the Sky Sports game or the Sun Dream Team, Fer is expected to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Despite a strong opening schedule which sees Hughton’s men host Everton, Southampton and Villa and travel to Hull in the opening five Gameweeks, the Dutchman is likely to struggle for our attention – with Robert Snodgrass priced at 6.5, the former Leeds man looks the obvious candidate in the Norwich midfield after registering 152 points last time out. Fer’s installation in Hughton’s starting XI could see him benefit from the new FPL bonus system, however, and should also bode well for their defensive resilience in the season ahead, making the Norwich backline options just that little bit more enticing.

Not many decent 7.0 strikers about Jonty unless you have a hidden gem. RvW is appealing to me, but having him and Snodgrass is not

The FPL price difference between Bale and Paulinho is so huge, 5.0m, that I'm struggling to justify Bale... In Sky it's not so great, and I've got Bale, RVP, Aguero and Coutinho in. But in FPL this is impossible. So Paulinho is looking a value pick and go with the the other three at present as I don't fancy any other City/Utd as certain starters?

Though he will come forward, he is still much deeper than Bale and therefore offer much less in terms of attack than Bale does.

This is a pretty flawed argument. Bale last season was a phenomenon. Paulinho's performance, position, adaptation to the PL, etc all completely unknown quantities.

There's no comparison. And yes you could construct a team with Bale instead of Paulinho and reinvest that 5.0 elsewhere, but you'll be very hard pressed to find a better use for 5.0

    Easily substitutable price brackets.

    The 9.0-9.5M midfield bracket

    The 6.5-7.5M midfield bracket.

Some great options in these two. If they fail, some great alternatives as well. Price structure matters here when you have easily substitutable options where you need to excercise one transfer to get another player and not 2.

Lot of value in the 5.5-6M defender bracket as well but not sure we will want to utilize precious first few transfers on defenders.

I'm struggling to fit in a 6.5-7.5 midfielder in, with Wally, Hazard and Bale + 2 cheapies in the midfield.

Compromise on one. Its a lovely price bracket and all of Snoddy Barfa Nolan and Mirallas have tasty fixtures as well.

Given the amendments to the bonus rule and the difficulty in squeezing in all the first tier players after the price hikes, would you consider Wilshere or Arteta as your Arsenal mid? I think Arteta could do nicely if he retains pens.

I like Giroud but there is an awful lot of competition around that price – Torres (stop sniggering you), Bony, Carroll, Cisse, Benteke (if he moves to Spurs), Lambert. Tough selection that.

He looks an alright option to me but can't help but feel that Ben Arfa / Mirallas / Nolan and maybe even Snodgrass represent better value.

A lot of my initial squad selection depends on whether Chelsea have a DGW first up I reckon.

Yeah that is the doozy. Difficult to select a Chelsea mid too given they have so many good prospects. Who exactly will Mourinho go with out of; Mata, Lampard, Hazard, Schürrle, Oscar. Bit of a pickle.

He always gets an average score... if only he was cheaper.

I trust Wilshere to get some assists and bonus this season.

But surely his average score is going to be better this season given the change in the baps rule? That's what I'm getting at.

I'm looking at the effect of the new BP system at the moment. Im taking out the points for goals, assists, clean sheets and appearances to see how many points players are earning towards BPs from other things not currently rewarded (or punished). I'll do a proper post in the next few days, but preliminary conclusions are interesting:

    - Taking out goals, assists and appearance points, a lot of strikers are averaging negative points
    - mids generally score 0 to 2 points in addition to the above, making goals from mids and strikers of roughly equal value when earning bps, but giving an advantage to mids when considering assists
    - whilst all action mids score best, its only by a point or 2, so dont expect lots of BPs for schneiderlin unless he scores
    - very proviaional, but centre backs seem to outscore full backs. Both score well in relation to mids
    - defenders are likely to clean up the bps in 0-0 draws, and be in with a chance in 1 and 2 nils.

Proof of all this to follow one evening this week

santi is the stand out one.
leading the bps by quite a bit.

      bps magnet?
I am sure Bale is -ve bps magnet (if he don't score)

Just created my first team for the new season. It's good to be back!
