Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Although their wording is "Chelsea are understood to have offered £10m in cash plus a player, thought to be either Juan Mata or David Luiz, in part exchange for the 27-year-old."

Thought to be either Juan Mata or David Luiz sounds very very far from certain that Mata was offered

I used to think the same but the quality of BBC Sport journalism has definitely gone down. The whole 'angry & confused' saga with Rooney is strange. Did he say these words? Or were they simply attributed to him? Don't even get me started on Phil McNulty.

Love the guy, at the way things at the club have changed. For example have a clause in Dunnes contract should he get injured. Hooper if we get him, a really hope he does, another 100%er will have wage increase incentive basedon promotion. Excellent new wage structure in place, Fernanes has publicly stated he will not tolerate players who do not give 100% from now on. Simpson was also an excellent piece of business, suprised a PL club didn't snap him up. Your views on things?

Like Baines, not getting much love in these parts (due to multiple budget options) but will get attacking returns at Everton or United. Silva too. Redmond a bit punty but talented, if he can nail down the right wing at Nor. All round very good.

Value per points? not sure about the value of that stat for a striker who's not played a minute in the PL. Didn't have great stats in La Liga. Could be a new Michu I suppose

    Mannone (Boruc)

    Clyne Rat Azpilicueta Vertonghen (Coleman)

    Lallana Bale Coutinho Walcott (Shelvey)

    Sturridge Dzeko (Gayle)

Not so sure on Dzeko and I would get Benteke in of he went to Spurs.

I assume this has been discussed to the core already and I am late in joining the party, but what are people's reactions on that Rooney bid. I think it was the right thing to reject the offer but if Chelsea comes up with a better offer in the shape of more cash and Mata which I hope they do, I think United should avail the offer. Get Mata and Fellaini with the extra cash and I think the hole left by Rooney could be filled. Opinions?

Rooney being undervalued on here - not at OT thankfully, he might be an utter knob but he's still a world class striker. Think Moyes will only sell for cash and won't want to sell to PL rival

United was right to reject it.

Despite what FPL says, Rooney is better than Mata.

Exactly my point. Rooney is greatly undervalued here and not to forget English players prices are over inflated. I think Mata + 20 million will be fair and it would be hard to reject it. As much as I like Rooney.

I think Mata plus 10M for Rooney is a fair deal for both parties considering Chelsea are doing the poaching. Rooney wants out and Utd get a fantastic proven player to replace him plus a not insignificant amount of cash.

I think they should have taken the offer and ran. Rooney was poor last season and seems like he wasnt happy/wanted out. Mata would perform much better in my opinion and would be of much more value to the team, + a handy extra 10 million. Mistake imo.

Here's the thing, Rooney is vastly underrated and undervalued here. Last season was probably his worst at Old Trafford but he still got 12 goals and 10 assists. That's pretty good for an average player but for Rooney that's bad. Shows the quality that's expected of him and what he is capable of producing.

He didnt have a bad start but as the season went on his perfromances declined (not sure if the stats back this up). You have to ask the question, if Rooney stays on next season will he score even less than 12 goals and 10 assists.. which I think could happen. I agree hs can be an excellent player and has been brilliant for UTD but it is time for him to move on imo and the team will move on without him. Mata would be a great addition to the team.

I am going to throw a curveball in to the budget defender options - Ron Vlaar!

I reckon Villa will be tighter at the back this season and as the season progressed Vlaar put in some massive perfomances at the back which went largely unoticed. Moreover he became more of a goal threat as the season progressed and I can only see more of the same this season. I know that people have concerns over Villa's defence and granted they have a difficult start, but...at 4.5m Vlaar could make a decent differential option.
