Chelsea find Brazilian inspiration to turnaround a Wayne Rooney strike, helped in no short measure by a rather dubious refereeing decision. Frank Lampard gleefully blasted home the winning penalty, leaving Alex Ferguson ranting on one official’s inability to make the right call, just 24-hours after congratulating another for failing to do the same. Alanis Morissette is busily writing a new verse this morning.

Elsewhere, Everton’s cup defeat to Reading almost went unnoticed, except of course by us Fantasy Managers who can now cuddle up to a double fixture in the forthcoming gameweek. The riches of Everton and Birmingham’s squad are ours to explore. Don’t all rush at once.

Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

Carlo Ancelotti went into last night’s clash with Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka up front in a 4-4-2. That left Didier Drogba benched, with Ramires and Florent Malouda patrolling the wide areas. United, rather surprisingly, were unchanged as Javier Hernandez kept Dimitar Berbatov benched. John O’Shea was once again given the right-back berth as Alex Ferguson continued to show reluctance to pair Chris Smalling with the inexperienced Rafael on the same side of his defence. That situation may change with the return of Rio Ferdinand.

That won’t arrive at Anfield however. United will travel to their bitter rivals without both Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as the Serb will serve a one-match ban for his late dismissal, missing the Liverpool clash on Sunday. Wes Brown is now set to start alongside Smalling in defence, with O’Shea surely likely to hold his start at right-back.

The Vidic suspension will come as a blow to many Fantasy Managers but, those contemplating cashing in on either O’Shea, Brown or Smalling now, need to consider that United’s clean sheet at Wigan has been their only shut-out in their last six league games.

United’s attacking talent looks far more attractive. Wayne Rooney’s fine first-half strike and the single Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point that followed, gave him a fine 19 point total for the gameweek. He will surely be the top target following the fallout from the Robin Van Persie injury and we can expect to see Rooney’s ownership rise dramatically. Sunday’s Anfield game will hardly prove an easy encounter, but that’s followed by far more obliging fixtures (BOL whm FUL new EVE) which should offer further profits.

David Luiz is clearly a player. The Brazilian mop top singled handedly dragged Chelsea back into the game with a fine half volley finish and several muscular interventions that inspired the likes of John Terry, Michael Essien and Frank Lampard to lift their game and turn the tables on United. For Fantasy Managers, Luiz looks a strong proposition. Ineligible for the Champions League, his starting role in Carlo Ancelotti’s back four will surely have been cemented by last night’s showing and, at 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he looks a worthy option for those looking to reap rewards from Chelsea friendly run of fixture to come in the next few weeks.

Chelsea’s fixtures are indeed strong, with a home clash with City providing their only intimidating match-up in the next until the encounter with Spurs in gameweek 35. Ancelotti’s side should offer profits then, although attacking returns are hard to gather given the uncertainty of the starting roles up front. The likes of Florent Malouda and, particularly Frank Lampard are expensive differentials to explore.

As stated in our earlier article, Everton’s fifth round FA Cup defeat to Reading last night maintained the double fixtures for both the Toffees and Birmingham in gameweek 29. Everton’s form however, is a major concern. Having seemingly turned the corner with the Cup win at Stamford Bridge and the comfortable passage past Sunderland at the weekend, the Toffees were simply miserable last night. Their season is now without purpose and the jeers of the Goodison faithful that greeted the final whistle will surely add further pressure for their forthcoming run of three home games in the next four fixtures.

David Moyes was without the weekend goal hero Jermaine Beckford – he was delayed by traffic getting to the ground (honest) and could only make the bench, while Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill also missed out (more on them to come). That meant recalls for both Jack Rodwell and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov in a five man midfield. Louis Saha started as the lone striker as Victor Anichebe returned from injury to claim a place on the bench.

Beckford and Anichebe saw action in the second-half as David Moyes shuffled his pack, replacing both Seamus Coleman and Bilyaletdinov. The withdrawal of Coleman will be a particular worry for Fantasy Managers. The young Irishman has been a regular starter on the right side of midfield but Anichebe’s return to fitness now gives Moyes an option in that role.

Everton’s exit from the Cup was compounded by the news that their own influential mop-top, Marouane Fellaini, would miss the rest of the season. The Belgian international requires surgery on his ankle injury that will keep him sidelined for several months. Tim Cahill’s condition is better but he too will miss Everton’s forthcoming matches. David Moyes brought us this summary of his latest casualties.

“Marouane Fellaini is going to be out for the season now, he’ll have an operation on Monday…Most people will tell you he’s been a key key player for us this season…Tim Cahill will miss two or three weeks with a foot injury just now, but that isn’t a reason for tonight’s result.”

Fantasy Managers looking to invest in Everton’s double are now likely to target Mikel Arteta in the middle of of the park, despite a hugely disappointing return from the Spaniard to this point. As a remaining senior midfield player, Arteta will surely be asked to step up as Everton attempt to fill the void left by Fellaini and Cahill. Rodwell is another consideration for those looking for a cheap short-term option, as is Leon Osman; both completed the 90 minutes last night. The injury-prone Louis Saha is also due for attention, although replacing the fragile Robin Van Persie with the Ferrari-folding Frenchman feels akin to divorcing Jordan to shack up with Kerry Katona. Tears before bedtime?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I've just noticed, there are only 2 GWs this month. There are 2 week gaps betwwen them. (5 Mar -19 Mar -2 Apr)

    Surely there is a case for holding on to RVP?

      He will definitely miss 2 games, and where as you quite rightly say there are only 2 games this month, I would be tempted to say there are some good alternatives over those 2 games, it is a tricky one though.

        I can sell RVP today for 10.0.
        Current price is 10.4.
        How low in price might he drift over the next 3 GWs?

        But I'm a bit worried. Arsene is quoted as saying "at least 3 weeks".
        Which would mean mising 3 GWs. At least.

      Mark Nicholas story for you.

      Someone I worked with did work experience on C4 cricket a few years back. MN asks him to get him a bacon sandwich. He returns with it a few minutes later. MN inspects it, before crushing it into a plastic cup and throwing it into the bin. "It's cold," he says before mincing off.

      How much is Roman drafting into Atkinson's offshore account? 2 years on the trot he's gifted you a 2:1 win with yet another (surprise surprise) dodgy decision at the bridge. Wonder if Roman will fly him especially for thu nights, channel 5 next season.

          It's hard when you are playing 11 V 12.

          Let's flash back a year: "Challenging Cole for possession, Fletcher clearly targeted the ball but the referee, Martin Atkinson, ruled that the Scotland midfielder had fouled the Chelsea man. Fletcher raged at Atkinson, splenetically spelling out that he had made contact with ball before man. Cole had indeed reacted like a startled cat falling off the airer onto the Aga.

          Dismissing all pleas, Atkinson signalled a free-kick and United retreated to form the barricades, seething with injustice. Maybe they were distracted but, for once, the rearguard let down its guard. Brown allowed himself to be wrestled down far too easily by Didier Drogba, a clear foul, but Atkinson’s vision was obscured by Joe Cole."

          Good ol' blue Atkinson 🙂

            You argument has one vital flaw - what about all the decisions that Utd get? Fergie time? lack of pens given against utd normally and so much more... Rooney aloud to do what he wants etc.

            honestly move on.

              "Another Brazilian, David Luiz, was everywhere, delivering good and bad, equalising with a majestic volley and then flirting with expulsion for a dreadful challenge on Rooney. How Martin Atkinson missed it beggared belief, particularly as the referee was 10 yards away."

              "In the first half, Manchester United were denied a penalty when John Terry handled a shot from distance. Although his hands were by his side, the ball travelled a long way and Terry ensured that the ball did not pass – a clear offence. Nothing was given."

              I've moved on, I quite enjoyed the game and this shenanigans is to be expected there, but the irony of sh*t the bed whinging about refs for the last 4 months isn't lost on me. 🙂

                It hit the same part of his arm that it hit Vidic's. Vidic should have been sent off earlier for pulling then pushing Drogba over. Rooney shouldn't have been playing. Penalty was so obvious it was unreal but according to Lord Sir Ferguson, Smalling got the ball, yeah right watch it again.

                Case closed we scored 2 legitimate goals you didn't score any.

                The next time United get a decision they shouldn't (or is just a 50:50 call), you can guarantee that Shit the Bed will not remember these AP. Selective memory FTW.

                Anyway, I'm getting rather bored of saying this, but ALL the big clubs (in all the big leagues) get more decisions than they should. Not the way it should be, but it's the way it is. So people can pipe down with the 'United get all the decisions' nonsense. ALL the top clubs get away with more than they should. End. Of.

    1 free, 2.8 in the bank.

    Various players I need to/could do with getting rid of. For this week, thinking of going:

    Berbatov -> Rooney
    Van Persie -> Zigic (4pt hit)

    1. Are Berbatov & RVP the two I need to get rid of first?
    2. Do you agree with my transfers?

    I don't think I will be bringing in any Birmingham or Everton player this week just for DGW.

    Foster Stockdale
    Kelly Murphy Kolarov Huth Coleman
    VDV Nani Nolan Cahill Brunt
    RVP Rooney Tevez

    Thinking to do,
    Cahill->Duff or Etherington(Opinions?)
    RVP-> Torres
    Kelly-> Luiz

    How is it?

    i appreciate the responses this morning as i attempt to make my transfer decision. If i do Cahill->arteta, would have:

    Szczesny

    Carr/Coleman/Simpson

    Nani/Arteta/VDV

    Rooney/Tevez
    (Adam, Kelly unavailable)

    would then need to start two of Huth(whm), Berbatov(liv), or Brunt(bir), the other would be only sub.
    So if i decide to bring in Nasri as well for a hit,
    would need to bench either Huth or Berbs.
    Is it worth a hit and who do you bench?

    Alot of people seem to be looking at zigic this week. I personally don't get it. After this dgw who would want to keep him. With all the injuries flying around it's gonna take up a valuable transfer shipping him back out. Also, will he play both games with the likes of jerome and martins waiting in the wings? Doubtful imo.

      birmingham has scored less than a goal a game for the season, less than a goal at home. thats not enough for me to invest in any attacking options there just because they have a double. there may be one forward or mid that will turn out to be worth the investment, but Im not gifted enough to guess who it will be, and even if i guessed right, probably wouldnt want them starting for me after that GW anyway.

      Foster / Friedel is the best rotation until the end of the season, by Friedel is very expensive compared to Begovic and Chesney, particularly when Walker is only 4mil, provides attacking threat and picks up BPs.

      As i mentioned earlier. Lose Friedel. Torres? Crazy. Gardiner not worth it. Doubt Birm will go on a goal scoring spree as They are fighting for survival. Foster/Zigic is sufficient cover.

      Maybe get young or VDV(if fit) in for Gardiner in the midfield and downgrade Torres.

          Basically - I need Baines & Saha to score 8 points more than Simpson & K Walker for it to pay off.

          4 of those 8 pts are nearly guaranteed *if* Saha & Baines play both games for Everton... so really a cleansheet or a goal between them would jusrify it... still a gamble, but maybe not just as much as normally would be

          Walker & Simpson will probably end up with 12 pts between them though, thats the way these things normally go!
