Chelsea find Brazilian inspiration to turnaround a Wayne Rooney strike, helped in no short measure by a rather dubious refereeing decision. Frank Lampard gleefully blasted home the winning penalty, leaving Alex Ferguson ranting on one official’s inability to make the right call, just 24-hours after congratulating another for failing to do the same. Alanis Morissette is busily writing a new verse this morning.

Elsewhere, Everton’s cup defeat to Reading almost went unnoticed, except of course by us Fantasy Managers who can now cuddle up to a double fixture in the forthcoming gameweek. The riches of Everton and Birmingham’s squad are ours to explore. Don’t all rush at once.

Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

Carlo Ancelotti went into last night’s clash with Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka up front in a 4-4-2. That left Didier Drogba benched, with Ramires and Florent Malouda patrolling the wide areas. United, rather surprisingly, were unchanged as Javier Hernandez kept Dimitar Berbatov benched. John O’Shea was once again given the right-back berth as Alex Ferguson continued to show reluctance to pair Chris Smalling with the inexperienced Rafael on the same side of his defence. That situation may change with the return of Rio Ferdinand.

That won’t arrive at Anfield however. United will travel to their bitter rivals without both Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as the Serb will serve a one-match ban for his late dismissal, missing the Liverpool clash on Sunday. Wes Brown is now set to start alongside Smalling in defence, with O’Shea surely likely to hold his start at right-back.

The Vidic suspension will come as a blow to many Fantasy Managers but, those contemplating cashing in on either O’Shea, Brown or Smalling now, need to consider that United’s clean sheet at Wigan has been their only shut-out in their last six league games.

United’s attacking talent looks far more attractive. Wayne Rooney’s fine first-half strike and the single Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point that followed, gave him a fine 19 point total for the gameweek. He will surely be the top target following the fallout from the Robin Van Persie injury and we can expect to see Rooney’s ownership rise dramatically. Sunday’s Anfield game will hardly prove an easy encounter, but that’s followed by far more obliging fixtures (BOL whm FUL new EVE) which should offer further profits.

David Luiz is clearly a player. The Brazilian mop top singled handedly dragged Chelsea back into the game with a fine half volley finish and several muscular interventions that inspired the likes of John Terry, Michael Essien and Frank Lampard to lift their game and turn the tables on United. For Fantasy Managers, Luiz looks a strong proposition. Ineligible for the Champions League, his starting role in Carlo Ancelotti’s back four will surely have been cemented by last night’s showing and, at 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he looks a worthy option for those looking to reap rewards from Chelsea friendly run of fixture to come in the next few weeks.

Chelsea’s fixtures are indeed strong, with a home clash with City providing their only intimidating match-up in the next until the encounter with Spurs in gameweek 35. Ancelotti’s side should offer profits then, although attacking returns are hard to gather given the uncertainty of the starting roles up front. The likes of Florent Malouda and, particularly Frank Lampard are expensive differentials to explore.

As stated in our earlier article, Everton’s fifth round FA Cup defeat to Reading last night maintained the double fixtures for both the Toffees and Birmingham in gameweek 29. Everton’s form however, is a major concern. Having seemingly turned the corner with the Cup win at Stamford Bridge and the comfortable passage past Sunderland at the weekend, the Toffees were simply miserable last night. Their season is now without purpose and the jeers of the Goodison faithful that greeted the final whistle will surely add further pressure for their forthcoming run of three home games in the next four fixtures.

David Moyes was without the weekend goal hero Jermaine Beckford – he was delayed by traffic getting to the ground (honest) and could only make the bench, while Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill also missed out (more on them to come). That meant recalls for both Jack Rodwell and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov in a five man midfield. Louis Saha started as the lone striker as Victor Anichebe returned from injury to claim a place on the bench.

Beckford and Anichebe saw action in the second-half as David Moyes shuffled his pack, replacing both Seamus Coleman and Bilyaletdinov. The withdrawal of Coleman will be a particular worry for Fantasy Managers. The young Irishman has been a regular starter on the right side of midfield but Anichebe’s return to fitness now gives Moyes an option in that role.

Everton’s exit from the Cup was compounded by the news that their own influential mop-top, Marouane Fellaini, would miss the rest of the season. The Belgian international requires surgery on his ankle injury that will keep him sidelined for several months. Tim Cahill’s condition is better but he too will miss Everton’s forthcoming matches. David Moyes brought us this summary of his latest casualties.

“Marouane Fellaini is going to be out for the season now, he’ll have an operation on Monday…Most people will tell you he’s been a key key player for us this season…Tim Cahill will miss two or three weeks with a foot injury just now, but that isn’t a reason for tonight’s result.”

Fantasy Managers looking to invest in Everton’s double are now likely to target Mikel Arteta in the middle of of the park, despite a hugely disappointing return from the Spaniard to this point. As a remaining senior midfield player, Arteta will surely be asked to step up as Everton attempt to fill the void left by Fellaini and Cahill. Rodwell is another consideration for those looking for a cheap short-term option, as is Leon Osman; both completed the 90 minutes last night. The injury-prone Louis Saha is also due for attention, although replacing the fragile Robin Van Persie with the Ferrari-folding Frenchman feels akin to divorcing Jordan to shack up with Kerry Katona. Tears before bedtime?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

                  I have interest in all sports having watched and read every Paper while living in Ireland over 20 years i can access it fairly well regarding media coverage and generally interest in the mainstream.

                  And I take Attila's point around Kilkenny , Tipp and D4 in Dublin there are clubs of course but thats a tiny blip on sports coverage and interest in Ireland.

                  The first time I ever saw a news show with Cricket in Ireland was that game v Pakistan. One in 15 years and watch alot of sports and read alot of papers. Its comparable to stamp collecting.

                    In terms of national news then unfortunately you are right, though the team is being increasingly talked about when they are in competitions such as the world cup. Off The Ball on Newstalk often chat about them.
                    It's not limited to 'rich' areas at all though, I played for a team in Kilkenny and we played Port Laois and a few other sides around the place. Honestly there are a good number of clubs around the country, but I agree it isn't part of the National conciousness, probably due to it being seen as a purely 'English' sport during the Éamon de Valera years.
                    It shows it is still regarded as sufficiently quirky that we were interviewed for the Irish Times and Rte Radio 1 when playing.

                    Ya agree but i didnt merely say in rich areas. Places where Hurling is prominent it has traditions going back to English rule times and then carried to this day like Kilkenny.

                    But ya my point was more on coverage and interest.

                    Off the ball are excellent in their coverage of sports. Very eh - non irish if you will.

    Hi, Advice please...

    Foster - Begovic
    Djorou - Coleman - Kolarov - Huth - Kelly
    Nani - VDV - Young - Etherington - Barton
    Van P - Tevez - Berbatov

    I've got a few doubts there for this weekend...Kolarov, VDV, Etherington, Barton and Berbatov! And two who definately won't start, i.e. Kelly and Van P

    So, I am thinking about a 4 pt hit to get rid of Kelly and Van P for Carr and either Torres / Rooney

    So, my question is Torres or Rooney? And, would you take further hits to change any other of the doubts or just hope for the best? I am thinking Torres because Chelsea have an easier fixture and no other hits at the moment.

            Because everyone would have the same team if you just picked the form players. The trick is to pre-empt players bursting back into form. If Torres manages to get 15 points in his game everyone will jump onto him.

        PS actually comes directly from the name of a French Finance minister, Etienne de Silhouette.The verb is recorded from 1876. The family name is a Frenchified form of a Basque surname; Arnaud de Silhouette, the finance minister's father, was from Biarritz in the French Basque country; the southern Basque form of the name would be Zuloeta or Zulueta, which contains the suffix -eta "abundance of" and zulo "hole" (possibly here meaning "cave"). Ironic, really. 😀

    Opinions on the below would be great...

    Squad is decimated so thinking about an 8 point 8 hit this week.

    Rafael, Cahill & Wingie -> R Johnson, Lampard & Zigic/Beckford

    Sound ok, and if so, Beckford or Zigic?

      Christ if youre describing your team as decimated id hate to hear how you'd describe mine! Anyway about your questions. Id say sell kelly instead of odemwingie everything else seems cool

    Sky commentator: "We've heard good things about Paul stirling, could be the next Eoin Morgan."

    Good! Our middle order was looking a bit flimsy...... 🙂

    How are these transfers looking?

    Kelly out for djourou
    RVP out for tevez
    Fabs out for Nasri
    Barton out for Arteta

    12 point hit

    Kelly to Luiz
    Odemwengie to Zigic
    Cahill to Nasri

    it leaves me with VDV (hopefully fit) RVP (could leave him there) and Vidic(it is only one game)

    8 point hit though...

    can you get text updates to your team telling you if a player you have scored or assisted or even a list of your players scores as a text after bps awarded?

    Deciding on transfers this week.. 1. Who? and 2. How many?!? It’s the least straightforward transfers this season for me.

    I know everyone's in the same boat, but i've got RVP, Fabs, Kelly and DJ all out, with Rafael not playing, Coleman & Kolarov never certain of starting… currently settling on:

    Rafael -> Luiz
    Fabs -> Nasri
    RVP -> Rooney/Saha

    Benched: Walker, Kelly (inj), DJ (sus)

    Who’s taking a punt on Saha and who’s going for the long term with Rooney?

    Team linked. Only really want to take a 4pt hit maximum if possible.

    Rafael -> Luiz
    Berbatov -> Rooney
    RVP -> Zigic

    Pick 2 of these 3 transfers. I'm thinking my defence is ok so I can wait a week on Rafael to Luiz, but I think CHE have a good chance of a CS this week...

      I have the same issue...

      i think Berbs will start against pool and is just as likely to score as rooney. Maybe save that one till next week?

    What you reckon of the following 8 point hit

    Rafael > Huth/Baines?
    Brunt > Nasri
    Odem > Zigic

    Is it overkill to have baines and Coleman...?

    Will Meireles be fit for Man U game? Thinking of getting in Arteta for him, but Arteta form is putting me off. Not much to choose from in Everton's and Brum's squads.

    Here's my team for GW29:

    Hart
    Coleman Simpson Hangeland
    Meireles Dempsey Nolan Nani
    Tevez(C) Rooney Zigic

    Subs: Reina Bardsley Vidic Adam

    Only have Zigic and Coleman in for DGW. Don't think getting in Beckford or Saha would be worth taking out for any of the strikers, I already have. What do you guys think?
