According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

    Tempted by an 8 point hit... I'm comfortable enough in my league to afford it. I just won't be able to afford vdv and rvp back if I sell them.

    Kelly > Luiz
    Fabregas > Lampard
    VdV > Nasri
    RvP > Saha

      Wouldn't bother with Luiz just yet unless you can't field 3 defenders without it. 2 and 4 look good, 3 for 4 points if VDV is ruled out.

        Yea, good point. I can just take 0 hits and get Lampard and Saha in. It's just a bit furstrating as I'd like to have rvp when he gets back and it's only about 2-3 games he is missing.

        The problem is I have rvp, vidic, vdv, adam and kelly on a red with fabs on yellow.

            I'd prefer Saha but I have a midfield slot open (Cahill out), and can't justify a 4 point hit for a striker when my current front 3 are Rooney, Tevez and Bent.

            Just need to decide between Arteta and Nasri.

    I'm tempted to hold on to RVP until GW 30, which is 17 days. We should have a better idea of his return date by then.
    Hopefully, his price won't plummet too much by then 🙁

        The worst case scenario is that he comes back in 3 weeks, plays for 10 mins and breaks down. Finished for the season.

        Is Wenger prone to bullsh***ing re. injuries? Could we see RVP trot out at the Camp Nou a week today?

    Opinions on the below would be great…

    Squad is decimated so thinking about an 8 point 8 hit this week.

    Rafael, Cahill & Wingie -> R Johnson, Lampard & Zigic/Beckford

    Sound ok, and if so, Beckford or Zigic?

      Dawson doesn't appeal to me.. Spurs don't keep enough clean sheets. There has to be better options for the money, who else do you have?

      Is Barton definitely ruled out? If he's fit, his fixtures are decent.

        If i'm losing RVP i want more Arsenal coverage so getting rid of Barton is more to facilitate getting him in.

        See above re. defence, but i think spurs look better with Dawson at the back.

        Tempted by Luiz at some point but fixtures aren't great yet.

          As CS says above you have a more than adequate defence for this week, Why waste a transfer on Dawson? For a hit it's pointless.

          If you link your team it's easier to see other possible changes you could make, e.g. to get Nasri in!

    I'm thinking Kelly -> Baines would work for a free

    but that still leaves me with RVP and Cahill and 1.1m spare

    I would bet we will end up when everyone fit playing:

    ----------------Reina-----------------
    Kelly Carra Agger/ Skrtel Johnson
    -----------Lucas Gerrard------------
    ------Kuyt Meireles Suarez--------
    --------------Carroll------------------

    He may keep the wing backs and go

    -------------Back 3---------------
    Kelly Gerrard Meierles Johnson
    ------Kuyt---------Suarez--------
    -------------Carroll----------------

    But their isn't much defensive cover in midfield then.

    Presuming both fit. Who's more essential after this gw....Rooney or Fabs?

      Deciding on transfers this week.. 1. Who? and 2. How many?!? It’s the least straightforward transfers this season, no?

      I know everyone’s in the same boat, but i’ve got RVP, Fabs, Kelly and DJ all out, with Rafael not playing, Coleman & Kolarov never certain of starting… currently settling on:

      Rafael -> Luiz
      Fabs -> Nasri
      RVP -> Rooney/Saha

      Benched: Walker, Kelly (inj), DJ (sus)

      Who’s taking a punt on Saha and who’s going for the long term with Rooney?

      The few times I had Saha last year, he had an annoying habit of pulling up injured in the warm up without prior warning. If you have him, make sure you have a good bench!!

      I don't think it's a bad idea, just a bit of a risk given injuries etc. If he's fit he's a great shout. The odd risk is necessary to get ahead of the competition though, especially if you're playing catch-up in your leagues.

    Anyone got time for a quick RMT?

    Foster (Stockdale)
    Coleman Simpson Walker (Djourou, Kelly)
    Nani Meireles Dempsey Silva (Fab)
    Zigic Suarez Tevez

    Any suggestions? I've already done Odem out for Zigic.

          Djourou over Walker surely? Newcastle at home makes Simpson a decent prospect for a CS.

    clearly with everton's next fixtures agisnt low scoring opponents (new, BIR, FUL, avl, wol, BLA) and everton's continual lack of goals (combined with Cahill and Fellain's injury) it is far far far better to invest in an EVERTON DEFENDER this week even if you already have Coleman.
    Expensive option Baines, cheap option Distin (ever-present).

    I'm going RAFAEL -> DISTIN
