According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

      Tempted to ship out Coleman for Baines as well....

      Maybe just Brunt > Nasri and Coleman > Baines is enough?

      Thats a 4 point hit already...

      Defintely Brunt -> Nasri or Arteta. Maybe all 4!

      I can't decide myself on who to do or how many... Settling on:

      Rafael -> Luiz
      Fabs -> Nasri
      RVP -> Saha

      That still leaves me with Kelly and DJ tho ðŸ™

      I'd nearly do all 4 and take a 12-point hit, seems to be all the rage at the moment 🙂

      But seriously I'd take a 8-point hit at least to lose guys like Brunt, Odem, Rafael and Jara who are unlikely to return significant points in the near future. I'd do the first three transfers to bring in Luiz, Arteta and Zigic and given the latter two have doubles it may not actually turn out to be a 8 point hit by the end of the gameweek. I'd maybe keep Berbatov for another week or two. Don't see the value in a hit there.

        That is fine with the DGW but are you going to want top keep Arteta and Zigic after DGW, If not it's going to cost more points to get them back out!

      I looks interesting bar Dempsey, just don't like him to keep up points scoring with all the boys back in that team, would prefer Dempsey OUT Adam IN (it seems you are WC?). Also Schwarzer? who is your other keeper, rest looks fine to me.

      Depends on whether you can put out a decent XI or not. I'm in a similar boat. I'm going to wait and see what the news is on Barton and VDV closer to the deadline.

      All of those transfers look reasonable, but I woudn't take a hit to do C.

            Or fine if they dont try to paint whats being said as facts. Theres enough rubbish about already anyway.

            I support United. Doesnt mean i accept everything ferguson says , or not cringe at his contradictions and commments sometimes but still love the job he has done.

          The fact is, Luis should have been sent off and the penalty should not have been awarded. The fact is Ferguson is accurate in what he said.
          Granted Man United have benefited from questionnable decisions in the past but that is no justification for the shambolic refereeing last night

            The ref is inconsistent sure like they all are and are never at a good enough standard.

            Ferguson is making it out like he was delibrately favouring United. Pure nonsense - and highly ironic given the events which occured last week with Rooney and Clatenburg.

            Yes Luiz should have been off.
            The penalty should not have been awared - let me guess you saw a reply - did the ref no? He had to make a spilt second decision.

            All refs are incompetent and not up to standard but to paint them as biased is nonsense.

              disagree with everything you have just said, referees are under more pressure and scrutiny than ever, and i believe do a really good job in difficult circumstances.

              However, the fact that he has totally BALLSED-UP the major decisions in the high profile games he has referees in the last 2 seasons shows that Atkinson cannot handle the pressure of these occasions and should be demoted.

                So you didnt read the article showing how Aktinson in his biggest game made an excellent and correct decision he was attacked for which meant united won the game.

                And you dissagreew with everything?

                So you think Luiz should have stayed on the field and
                you have not watched one reply of the penalty and decided on the spot in live viewing it was not a pen.

                Oh and you also dissagree that Ferguson said the refs were biasd against United.

              I seen the match live and knew straight away that Smalling's leg hadnt left the ground, and Zhirkov and ran into him so I knew it wasnt a penalty. It was as clear as day, like I seen the ref looking at Rooney/Luiz when Luiz took him out and yet he choose not to do anything about it. These were easy decisions. Oh and he didnt have to make a split second decision, he could have thought about it or consulted the 4th/5th official who may have actually seen what happened.

              Not all refs are incompetent, most of them are very good, but only the bets ref should be given the very big games and Atkinson is far from the best.

                "i seen the match live and knew straigth away"

                From a tv screen with a camera zooming in from 20 yards away. And you knew.

                Or maybe you love United so much your natural inclination was to say no pen and then you saw a reply which as i said it debatable as to whether it was or was not a pen.

                There was nothing sure about it. All that is sure is that being an obvious hardcore fan your judgement is not exactly neutral. So you would obviously object to every 50 50 decision.

                  I said, if you read my comment, that I knew Smalling's foot hadnt left the ground so he didnt even tackle him, thats why I believed it was not a penalty and my initial opinion turned out to be correct.
                  I had only been discussing with my liverpool supporting mate yday about how Rooney should have recieved a ban for what happened against Wigan and anybosy that know me, knows that I am not biased.
                  Some of the referee decisions last night were disgraceful, end of.

            It should have been a penalty. Smalling did not play the ball contrary to what Ferguson believes and brought Zhirkov down.

            Vidic should have been sent off before he eventually which proves the referee did not want to ruin the game with a red card.

            Great article by the way.

                Ball gets played past, zhirkov moving at full speed gets his foot caught with Smalling's in brings him down and it's a penalty. End of.

                It is the sort of decision that never go against you despite being correct so you have begun to think that it is not.

                  smalling tackles him, the ball bouncers back off zhirkov and thru smallings legs, but his momentum from the inital challenge takes him into collision with zhirkov - it happens ALL THE TIME in football, but u have to look at the INITAL challenge. An experienced referee woulld have waved it away withiotu a second glance.

                    I really dont know how ppl can defend the refereing decisions from last night, they were simply pathetic, with respect to the non sending off of Luiz and the award of a penalty when Zhirkov ran into Smalling.

      fine back the referee, god knows they do get a lot of undue criticism.
      Fact is he made 3 key and unfair decisions in 1) ignoring Luiz's aggression on Hernandez and then his crazy challenge on Rooney, 2) wrongly awarding a penalty for the winning goal, 3) harshly sending off Vidic.
      Ferguson was correct to cite his decisions in the corresponding fixture last season, which were MASSIVELY costly in the destination of the title.
      Fine, sometimes you get unlucky in football, but let's not rejoice mistakes from a ref.

          the fact that you think it was harsh for Vidic to get sent off renders your whole argument insignificant as he should have been booked 2 minutes before he was sent off anyway.

        I could ask where were you last week to attack the ref re Rooney?

        1. Yes Luiz should have walked but there was nothing crazy about a body check

        2. Wrongingly awarded a penalty - its a contentious issue which was prob a penalty . But again you have a reply to view and the ref didnt.

        3 Vidic wasnt harshly sent off. I own him , support United and he was lucky not to be sent off earlier in fact i thought he would be for the clip. So when he commited 2 foul after the yellow it was the correct decision

          Agreed. Also Everytime Nani or Rooney went near Luiz or Ivanovic who had both been booked, they were looking to dive. The referee had probably noticed that as it was pretty obvious and decided not to send Luiz off as he will have assumed it was a Rooney dive. The boys (men) who cried wolf.....

        Macheda scored a handball goal last year, which is much worse than an offside goal.

        Vidic's red card was not a harsh as he should have already been sent off.

        I wonder if Fergie will get fined for criticising the referee so blatantly. Any other manager would.

                    Also a fact that has been forgotten AP is that we had a perfectly good goal not count in the 5th minute for some ghost foul in the box.

                    Going into United's two most important consecutive games of the season, the FA decides not to ban Rooney.

                    The fact that yesterday every United fan did a post to the effect saying ironically United get all the decisions proves something.

    Kolarov Coleman Carr (Smalling) (Kelly)
    Nani VDV A.Young Silva Brunt
    Tevez RVP (Berba)

    planning on 4pt hit

    Brunt - Bentley
    RVP - Saha

    My squad is pretty ballsed up. Little help appreciated/needed.

    Foster (Begovic) (At least this isn't an issue.)
    Evra (Doubt) Kelly (Out) Coleman Clark Kolarov. (I am happy to play Coleman and Kolarov)
    Barton (Doubt?) Cahill (Out? Why? Source!?) Nani A Young (VDV, out? Why? Source?)
    Tevez Vela (Should get rid but bigger priorities) RVP (Out)(RVP needs to go really?)

    Foster Begovic
    Evra Kelly Coleman Clark Kolarov
    Barton Cahill Nani A.Young VDV
    Tevez Vela RVP

    I think I need to get rid of RVP first and foremost....? But who for? Saha is the best option IMO, and then its got to be Cahill really? How long is he out for? Same with VDV ? How long? Same with Barton how long? RVP -> Saha and Cahill -> Lampard are my original thoughts, with a possible Evra -> Baines switch. Only 1 free transfer mind. Any help appreciated.

    Interesting Dilemma:

    I currently sit top of my mini league by 25 points and am in a two horse race with another guy who last season finished in the top 50 in the world! Each team has 10 identical players. Being ahead of him should I 'block' him overtaking me by bringing in a player that's in his team that I haven't got or should I not worry about him and just do my own thing?

      But you’ll never know what his next transfer will be – he will always have a chance to bring in a differential against your team, so you should try to do the same against his. 25 points is nothing

    Took an 8pt hit last week and it kind of paid off (but only due to Ashley Young). However, I'm still left with 6 injuries and only 8 players I can field... not good!

    Foster (Begovic)
    Kolarov Coleman Huth
    Young Nani
    Tevez(c) Berbatov

    Injuries:
    RVP, Walcott, Kelly, RJohnson, Cahill, Barton

    Suggestions?

    Any news on Barton or RJohnson?

      Re Johnson: "Roger Johnson, who sustained a calf injury in the game against Arsenal, is sure to miss out on this game, but McLeish has an otherwise fit squad at this disposal".from http://www.watchfootballnow.com/fixtures/premier-league/1299329100/birmingham-city-vs-west-bromwich-albion-live-online.html - I was banking on him being fit.....

        thinking of..

        rjohnson --> carr
        rvp --> zigic
        walcott --> nasri

        for an 8 pt hit (again!)

      If the rest of my team was good then I could cope with that, but I've also got three pieces of deadwood called Brunt, Rodallega and Eardley in there. Bad times.

      Just rotation, Berb not in the best form, but then he was benched at times when he was, fully expect him to start against Liverpool, fully expect him to be amongst the points, if you have him, hold, if you don't, don't bother!
