According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Put 20 on them just before they lost the 7th wicket. Just over even odds, so not a big win but a win none the less.

From the Irish pespective you can enjoy the achievement of them posting their best ever win. Then if England are good enough they will recover anyway and compete later in the tournament.

Aye, slowly, slowly we are getting ever more competitive. We actually should have beaten Bangladesh but it wouldn't surprise me if we fade from here on in the remaining games. Hopefully not though but they are entitled to enjoy tonight for now.

I can honestly say I know people who would throw there kids out of the house if they ever wanted to take up cricket. Honestly its still seen like that in many rural places.

Besides Id be surprised if there was 50 pitches in the whole country, Few people play in Dublin and along the south east but thats fairly scare as it is.

You can get stuff cheap enough in one of the big tesco's. Me and a mate got loads of Irish lads and lasses into it in Kilkenny, great craic if you don't take it too seriously. Generally I found the Kilkenny lads were natural batsmen but the bowling takes some getting used to as its a weird action unless you're used to it.

Well hang on...... nah feck it I can't be arsed going into the historical/archaeological bit about the Irish incursions of the fifth & sixth century. Let's just say St.Patrick originally wasn't planning on going over.
As for the 'us' bit, naaah balls I won't....but its so tempting to prattle on....

Ireland was every bit as under the control of the crown as all the dutchies and earldoms of England. By your rationale no feudal monarch would be capable of oppressing their subjects.

                    Two factors to consider
                    1) Henry II was not English. We had only just been conquered by the Normans and the invasion of Ireland was entirely Norman. So it is a misnomer to say that it was an 'English Invasion' as it is a common misconception

                    2) He took Leinster, the majority of Munster and Connaught remained under Gaelic control and influence. He did not take the whole country by any means. The first English King to claim Ireland as his 'Kingdom' was Henry VIII

Atilla please. You can safely credit with me with being aware that Henry the 2nd was a Norman, however he was also King of England and held territory in Ireland in vassalage in precisely the same way to the crown of England (not the crown of Normandy) as he held his lands in England. The Normans were historically "dukes" of Normandy and held that territory in nominal vassalage to the King of France. The same cannot be said for his English and Irish territories for which the Norman kings were liege lords.

The majority of Irish cheiftains were held in vasslage to the Norman baron who was held in vasslage to the King of England.

We can't say that Ireland was not oppressed by a King of England without it following that English was not oppressed by a King of ENgland either. If you want to argue that the Irish wouldn't consider being oppressed by the King of England then same as being oppressed by "the English" then that's some very undignified wriggling that ill becomes you.

I disagree, look at it this way. The invasion of Ireland was less than 100 years after they invaded England, now say for arguments sake the Germans conquered Poland in 1939, then less than a 100 years later they invade Russia. Would you say it is the Poles invading them or the Germans?
History is more complicated than that. The Normans basically ripped apart English culture and imposed their own, yet when it is taught in Ireland it is simplified to being 'The English' invasions.

Atilla it's perfectly simple, this wriggling is embarassing.

The Normans were "Dukes" of Normandy and KINGS of England. All the barons in England and Ireland were subject to the KING of England. Trotting out a comparison from the 20th century is completely irrelevant because the feudal system, by which most Western European countries were governed at the time no longer exists! Most of Europe then consisted of small dutchies each held in vassalage to a particular King. What countries those dutchies lie in today is entirely irrelevant to the lawful sovereignty that applied at the time. What we now called Ireland was subject to the crown of England, and there's no getting around that.

If you want to argue that Norman kings were not Kings of England because they didn't originate in England than neither were the Stuarts, the Hannoverians, Saxe Coburg, even out present Queen, who is incidentally still entitled "Duke of Normandy".

Sorry for the delay I was just off making dinner
I am not arguing over the title 'King of England' - they were. However the Normans were palpably not English during their invasion of Ireland. They were a conquering elite of people who had just hammered the English into submission.
The Normans at that stage were not English despite their title as King of England, it was enforced rule by a conquering army. They classed the English as second class citizens.
I see the true 'English' subjection of Ireland beginning later in history, during the reign of Henry VIII. As do many Irish historians and academics. The 800 years is a load of old jingoistic propaganda.
Who is wriggling? And why the aggression in your responses?

Irrespective of who the Normans were, where they came from, or the regime's attitude towards the conquered people (which depended a lot more on the attitude of the aristocracy, who in fact started to naturalise and rely on the people for support long before the reign of Henry 2nd) - they were by law Kings of England just like the Tudors, the Danes, the Anglo-Saxons, the Hannoverians, whichever dynasty you want to talk about; and Ireland was in the 12th Century subject to the crown of England.

Sadly no amount of introvertable evidence is going to get you to admit that Ireland was oppressed by England more than 450 years ago. You've given Henry Hill an unsolicited history lesson when in fact you're yourself wrong, and rather just accept that and move on you're wriggling and "yea but.."ing and going of tangents for reasons I'd not venture to speculate on, but it's annoying - hence my tone 🙂

I'm not wrong. I just don't have a simplistic view of it. Why do you never see a publication called the English Invasions of the 1160's? Its because they were not English invasions. They were Norman.
The first English King to declare himself High King of Ireland was Henry VIII. No previous English monarch ever claimed that title.

MASSIVE. REALLY MASSIVE. this is like the arsenal newcastle game, but even bigger. 4-0 up at halftime, and losing 4-8 at fulltime lol

Nice final take from the Guardian in their game commentary...frames the win in terms of significance, probability and all that...

Ireland have done it! Mooney hits the winning boundary off Anderson with five balls to spare. This is utterly astonishing, one of the most amazing victories in any sport for years. People are just charging round the Ireland dressing room in a circle, with no idea what to do. Some of the players hare onto the field, with the cameras picking up some big boys' language. I'm not sure even those words can do this justice. Ireland were completely out of it at the halfway stage, but then Alex Cusack and particularly Kevin O'Brien decided to give it a lash, with astonishing consequences. O'Brien demolished the record for the fastest World Cup hundred, smashing his off only 50 balls; and then, at the finish, Ireland were ice cool. They played with stunning maturity when the pressure was on. Ireland have also set a new record for the highest World Cup chase. More importantly, they've beaten England. At cricket. England had a shocker, but this is not about them. It's about one of the most charming and joyous wins we'll ever see and a match we will never forget, at least not until we're in the special home and the faculties have gone. Thanks for all your emails, night.

Not for the first time this year I want to have 6 midfielders and only 2 forwards - if only FPL would let us play people out of position!

just wanting to redistribute from 5 and 3 to 6 and 2 - I'd choose to play Nani as a forward with Tevez, then 5 midfielders behind them...

Baines and Nasri in just feels right to me, but I'd like to do just Nasri and not financially strap myself for GW 30s move.

if R.Johnson and Meireles play I can sit Brunt force trauma on the bench and not take a pts hit

when will I ever be able to get Brunt out?
