With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

This is what I'm looking at now:

    .........................Mignolet ★ Boruc
    ....Enrique ★ Toure ★ Clyne ★ Demel ★ Collins
    ....Bale ★ Hazard ★ Walcott ★ Mirallas ★ Quinn
    ..................Negredo ★ Bent ★ Cornelius

    0.5m banked

Defence looks odd but I'm pretty set with it; three-way rotation between LIV / WHAM / SOT. All have good early fixtures.

It's the strikers I'm worried about. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You should be worried about the strikers. I assume Bent will go if he doesn't go to Newcastle, if he does he is probably a decent bet. Negrodo worries me though, great price if he plays...I will wait a few gws and see what sort of time he is getting.

Cornelius is worth a shot for kicks, everyone has a long shot or two in their teams.

442 most weeks or playing Cornelius?

Thanks, yes I had been planning to play him in a 3-4-3, though some weeks defensive fixtures may allow me to rest him. I agree with both Negredo and Bent, who I'll only have if he moves to NEW.

I could spread the money more evenly for a more secure strikeforce but I will have to go without City cover. Not sure which is the lesser of the two evils 🙂

    Here’s a general question:

Spending your full budget versus leaving money in the bank; which strategy is better for starting the season?

The reason I ask is because, traditionally, I have started every FPL with a maximum budget team. This year, however, I am very content with my current team valued at 99.5.

I see immense value in the flexibility that money in the bank gives me when I have to make those crucial early season adjustments (without having to use my wildcard!).

    What do you guys think?

0.5 or 1 in the bank is very handy especially at the start if you're not planning an early wc.

My latest draft had 0.5m left over. It wasn't planned but I'm very happy with that. Allows for Cornelius to become JRod, Mirallas to become Kagawa/Lampard etc. Could definitely help if I've mischosen.

I'd have no problem leaving .5 in the bank. Sometimes a .5 more expensive player isn't necessarily an upgrade anyway.

      Er...could I borrow that 0.5? 😉

If you're happy with it then there's definitely no point in changing, like you say, it allows for more flexibility if you need a transfer. I started with a squad worth 99m a couple of years back, only for it to be the year where FPL messed up and everybody got unlimited transfers before GW2!

Spend it all at this point... unless you have a specific transfer in mind for GW2/3 then what's the point in saving anything?

You want the best team money can buy which is well positioned for GW1 onward.

It's raining again in O'Ireland. Guess that means more fpl.

Cept till after Community cup and all this transfer business is sorted, it seems a real time sink of conjecture and going around in circles.

..Company of Heroes 2, anyone played it?

Also, a novel way of picking your fpl team could be to use the Football Manager scout system to pick predicted wonderkids from this year, e.g. Ramirez, Barfa etc. It's a reliable enough system as they use real world scouts! 😉

Alright, guys. I know RMT's are probably becoming annoying but I'd like a few outside thoughts of where I'm at if possible. Been reading a lot and getting some good ideas. Here is what I have.

    Boruc--Mannone
    Coleman--Clyne--Turner(NOR)--Collins--Chester
    Bale--Hazard--Walcott--Snoddy--Thomas
    Aguero--Sturridge--JRod

Plan on doing Aguero->RVP at GW4 / Hazard->Nolan at GW3 minimum. Could possibly do Coutinho/Giroud to save 1.0m instead of Sturridge/Walcott If Sturridge isn't fit or depending on if ARS get another striker. That'll have to be decided later though.

Have 0.5m left in the bank to afford my GW3 transfer.

    Thanks for any responses.

It's a solid team in my eyes. However the front 3 seems a bit risky to me. All 3 have question marks over them. Will Aguero regain his form, is he niggle free?. Sturridge under an injury cloud and I like to get people with full pre seasons under their belt to start.

If all three fire though, look out.

So I think I've sorted out a pretty solid squad which include RVP. I've gone cheap in defence but tried to pick teams which were solid last year (>10 clean sheets).

    Mignolet, Boruc

    Dawson, Coleman, Turner, Collins, Chester

    Silva, Walcott, Hazard, Wayama, Thomas

    Van Persie, Giroud, Kone

A couple of people which may get moved based on transfers (eg Giroud) and not sure on best 5.0 mid also. Thinking about Boruc to 4.0 and using that 0.5 to go Wayama to Jarvis, but I do like to have GK backup.

So what are your thoughts? On the right track?

Looks good to me except Wanyama. Jarvis got 3 assists in his latest friendly but I read two were from corners which he usually won't be taking. Worth a shot though. Maybe Pilkington? Could also do Koren or Brady since they would rotate with Thomas. Is that Dawson from WBA? Is he in a starting role? Haven't seen much talk about him.

Realized that could be (and probably is) Dawson from TOT. If he starts that's not bad at 5.0. If not you may be able to shave 0.5m off there for a possible upgrade to Wanyama. Vert may be gone a bit after his injury today.

          Is is indeed Dawson (Tott).

I'm sceptical about the promoted teams this year. No stand out options in any of them for me at this stage. Hence Wayama, I think with scheiderlin(spelling*) being DM Wayama could be more box to box and chip in offensively. I'm not sold in him though.

      A) has a solid front 7 week in week out, with Snoddy being the weakest.

      B) has RVP which means RVW gets a run every week. If you could find 0.5 and put Kone in for RVW as I like EVE first 10 or so fixtures I would vote B all day.

taking out the common factors youre essentially left with:
bale vs. rvp = bale better value early on (although i personally have both)
gayle vs. thomas = thomas better value
snod vs. mirallas = snod better value
negredo vs. rvw = negredo potentially much better value, but a risk

3-1 in favour of A, and the one in favour of B is sort of irrelevant considering they'd both be benched mostly.

Not that interested in 5.0 for the WBA defense

Boruc is my definite for the minute and Mannone probably. I'm not spending more than 9 for keepers I'd even spend 8.5 on them if a 4.0 option popped up

Lukaku massive question marks surrounding Chelsea frontline. Purely put Lukaku there based on a gut feeling. Obviously the pre season games to come could put that to bed.

JRod - must say, it has crossed my mind to just go with Lambert (would almost be a differential around these parts).

Anelka - cheap, scoring pre season goals. Watch this space I guess.

    Matt Jarvis
27 years old and should be in his prime now/ Prior to last season was a fairly decent scorer of fantasy points 133 in 2010/11 and 142 in 11/12 . However last season having moved from Wolves to W ham he only managed 92 points.
However there is cause for optimism for the coming season , he has had time to bed down into the team , and was named man of the match against Hamburg

"Staff at Upton Park are clearly impressed with Jarvis’ form. Following the Hamburg victory, assistant manager Neil McDonald told West Ham’s website: "Matt Jarvis was in excellent form.
"He got at his man, he crossed the ball, he took his man on and he drove into the box. That's what we've been trying to get him to do since he came to the football club.
"Hopefully the penny's dropped and we'll have a few more performances like that where he's creating goals and setting chances up for everybody."

At only 5.5m and with a decent run of fixtures , he could well be worth including as a cheap fourth of fifth mid., he is just the type who could rack up some early points , before the big guns find their feet. If used as a fifth mid he would rotate well with Rodriguez of Southampton who is a decent third striker

Well , he has scored well in previous seasons , if he can score 130-140 points then it makes him an absolute bargain, even 110 would make him value for money.
W ham have a great run of fixtures , Aladyce is targeting a fast start , and Jarvis could well make a large number of his attacking points early in the season

Appreciate your research. More than stats and fixtures, its the way West Ham play. They get wingers and full-backs to be crossers. That's their main job. I can't see Jarvis scoring more points than Diame or Noble even.

this is the best team i could come up with for "value for money"

    Kitty - 3.0m

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Zabaleta, Baines, Mert, Kolo (Clyne)
    Coutinho, Lampard, Bale (Thomas/Koren)
    JRod, Anelka, Giroud

    reasoning:
Mignolet will be #1 with Reina gone. Easy choice.
Kolo is cheap and will play quite a lot i think.
Coutinho/Lampard, hmmm.. i know most would rather Walcott/Hazard/Mata but i reckon that Coutinho will be LFC's best player this year, and Lamps is Lamps.
JRod/Anelka/Giroud seem to be having a decent preseason.

with 3.0 still in the kitty i can make upgrades when needed.

RE Sturridge: 10 goals in 14 appearances is enough to keep me interested.

United are feeling the pressure to sign an elite name. I would love to see Zaha get the start but I would be surprised.

          WOAH WOAH WOAH

          Let's not get too excited

He isn't better then any of those players, if Young stop getting injured and Nani went back to his normal from then Zaha wouldn't be getting a look in

As for now though, he will probably start a few games due to injuries and Valencias form

Nani is probably leaving OT. Zaha has great movement and for 6.5 he's a good buy. I'm happy with Kagawa though, for now.

I may have to change that to Zaha and RVP if I get some vibes. 20-odd days of second guessing myself left!

Yeah I'd be all over Zaha if it looks like he is gonna start most games but I think people are going a bit over the top after a few pre-season games, completely disregarding how effective United's other wingers are when they are injury free and on form.

Kagawa is probably going to be my only United player if Rooney leaves. I love Kagawa

There will be better options than Coback, he will get you no points. Anelka will be rotated like crazy as well. And who is Ward?

      Baines + Snodgrass for sure.
i reckon they'll avg more by years end.
      more bang for your buck

      Baines (7.5 - 177) + Snodgrass (6.5 - 152) vs Coleman (5 - 74) + Silva (9 - 147)

find me a MID who is 7.5 who scored as much as Baines??

    Boruc Foster
    Clyne Collins Coleman MTurner Chester
    Bale Wally Hazard Wanyama Thomas
    RVP Aspas Anelka

    1.0 left (for real!)

All the dirt trackers in this combo rotate pretty well as well as keepers
    BUT...

I could squeeeeeze Baines into this and acquire three Palace players (UGH!) in the process

    Boruc Foster
    Clyne collins BAINES chester PARR
    Bale wally hazard wanyama thomas
    RVP Aspas Phillips/Dobbie(4.5!!?)

Any takers on the second option with a permanent Palace bench?

I want to know that if you were to pick 10 players, soley based on total points score next season, without considering their value, who would be the top 10?.

    What are your points predictions?

    I would say

    Bale (250ish points)
    Hazard (230ish points)
    Mata (~210 points)
    RVP(~200 points)
    Agüero (~200 points)
    Navas (~190 points)
    Silva (~180 points)
    David Luiz (~170 points)
    Cech (~160 points)
    Berbatov(~160 points)
    Coutinho (~160 points)

I base this on my predictions of chelsea to win the league and city runners up. I just can't see Moyes taking it on his first season. I also predict more clean sheets from chelsea and a high scoring season for defender David Luiz under mourinho's safe playing style. In terms of a big mid and striker from non top 4 teams I went with bale of course and berbatov is I expect him to provide consistency and back another good season. I didn't choose baines even though he scored 177 last year because I don't think he or the team will perform the same without Moyes

      Hazard ~ 250
      Walcott ~ 250

Hey guys, first season playing fpl, just doing lots of research right now and I wanted to ask whether there was truth to some people saying a 352 isn't flexible? I'm not feeling too many of the strikers (before watching to see how they fair this year) and I was just curious as to whether starting with this formation would be a mistake? Cheers.

Nothing wrong with the formation, it could work. In the past 343 was better though, you might be right about strikers this year.

Ah cheers for the response. All my drafts have started with 343 but the only frontline I feel comfortable with is Aguero, Sturridge, Jrod. This leaves me lacking a 2nd big defender and leaves a bit of gaping hole in the midfield with Jarvis having to start. Hopefully some more deals will bring about more player value.

It seems to me that there are absolutely no strikers without serious question marks.
RvP may not justify his price. Same goes for Benteke.
Aguero/Negredo have questions about security of starts, as do the chelsea strikers.
Carroll, Sturridge are coming off injuries.
Aspas, JRod & RvW may not live up to the high expectations.
Lambert & Berbatov are not getting any younger, and will likely experience a dropoff in production.
Giroud, Long had good moments last year, but were woefully inconsistent.
    And Suarez is suspended.

Based on all this, I may just go for big hitters in midfield and play a 3-5-2. Any striker will be a bit of a gamble. Some punts are unavoidable, but I can't really justify loading up on strikers.
