With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Coutinho > Wally if you can (no need for double Liverpool and you need Arsenal coverage).

Also, not convinced Dawson will be automatic first choice so maybe move to an Arsenal defender.

Don't understand the Theo love. Arsenal are bound to sign a CF so he won't be playing through the middle. Inconsistent and more hit and miss.

You're right though, I do need Arsenal coverage. Trying to squeeze in Cazrola atm.

Looks like Vertonghen will miss the start of the season so I guess he's nailed on for the start at least.

Gone for a slightly different but still pretty standard sort of team

Mignolet | Boruc - mainly play Migs with the latter playing the odd GW

Evra | Baines | Collins | Clyne | Turner - first two very decent attacking threat and clean sheet chance, next two rotate wonderfully and Turner as bench fodder

Bale | Walcott | Hazard | Koren | Thomas - First 3 obvious picks, final two both likely to play 'in the whole' and rotate perfectly

Kone | Lambert | Berbatov - All very decent value, spearhead of their respective attacks

0.5 in bank for the sake of a bit of flexibility

    Any suggestions for improvement?

I currently have the same front 3 & same GK pair. It allows a top value midfield.

Suggestion: Would you be better of picking one of Baines or Evra and replacing the other with a solid 5.0 - 5.5 defender, therefore allowing you more funds to upgrade on the two budget mids?

I haven't seen anyone bigging him up, but in his seasons with 2000+ minutes, he's averaging 130 FF points. And this year he's priced really well. Peter Crouch at 6.0. Excellent H/A rotation with Snodgrass. I've seen a lot of love for J.Rodriguez on FFS on the basis of a good final third of last season but given Crouch's record and his excellent price, looks a good option for the budget forward.

I am not to concerned about ridicule. Just throwing the name out there. Too often a guy becomes a religion around here off very little evidence (um, J.Rodriguez). I think it's worth looking at guys who have dropped in price but have decent records historically given their current price.

I'm not sure he is nailed on enough. Jones or Jerome will be competing with him for that spot. He also has tough fixtures with City at home at one point although rotation might alleviate that somewhat. JRod rotates nicely with Snodgras as well.

Here's hoping, and I agree, it has been nice watching them come out of their shells a bit. Those same teams would be the ones Bradley's squads would have found a way to lose to. I like our direction under Klinnsman.

Not sold on Klinnsman. And it's hard to argue with Bradley's record. Beat Spain in CC, got out of WC group, won CONCACAF trophies. I give Klinnsman the benefit of the doubt but he has not sorted the defense which is critical for Brazil '14.

Ah, fair points all...I guess I just appreciate Klinnsman's desire to get forward and attack, which to be fair Bradley wasn't too keen on. And I think our defense will probably be what it always has been: decent but not good enough unfortunately.

Boy, not sure I understand the logic of some of these selections. Boruc is not so good that you don't need a valid back up option. Baker's schedule (if this is the Villa Baker) is a nightmare and Manolev - is he nailed on ? Find some budget defenders that rotate well. So, you have 2 SOT in defense all the time. A team that conceded goals for fun last year. There are probably 10 mids at Wilshere's price who are better value (hello Snodgrass); Puncheon won't start. Not buying this group.

Had a mess around to see what things would like without Bale and came up with this, I think I quite like it. Sure few issues here and there but show me a team that doesn't at this stage.

    GK - Migs Lewis

DEF Clyne, Collins, Merte, Moxey, Chester

MID Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Quinn, Diame

    FWD Rvp, Cornelius, Aguero

Not sure on Moxey. At that price, has to be nailed on. Parr/Ward rotate H/A with Chester and look nailed on. For the same price as Coutinho you can get a proven commodity in Stevie Gerrard. Coutinho managed a nice 12 games or so; Gerrard has been FF gold mine for years. Not sure on Quinn either. I mean, be sure your guys actually start. I like the Cornelius gamble but lots going for Anelke who has a strong FPL record.

    How does this re-do look?

    Jussi Boruc
Baker Luiz Coleman Ward Toure/Skrtel (whoever partners Agger)
    Bale Coutinho Walcott Mirallas Thomas
    Sturridge J.Rod Lukaku

Not sure about Lukakua but may change depending on new strikers, etc.

Watching Portland Timbers vs Norwich City right now. RvW if you can't score on a team who has been slow at the back in MLS play this year you need to come out my team right now!

He could be subbed off in this break only reason I'm sticking with this guy is because he is all Norwich has up top at the moment and I can't afford anyone else.

Fair play to Panama but Mexico was far from their best, barring the last ten minutes when they started giving a crap.

Anyone have any thoughts on Benteke? Now that he's staying at Villa can he replicate his great season and push on? Is he priced too high now?

Compared to his midfield team mates, he is too expensive. I think the Villa midfield is where the value will be found.

All their midfielders are under 6m. Surely this season one of them will be more of a regular. Tonev in particular stands out, looks set to be the main playmaker in the hole. Although I am acutely aware that Lambert likes to rotate. One to watch though.

Cornelius scored last night in the first 16 mins and looked very good.. He and maynard seem to work well together. Course it was forest green rovers. i gotta say i'm intrigued at 5.5 though. if Crystal palace get Cole/Odemwingie i'll drop my gayle plans and get him.

I like him to do well as a 5.5m option. Maybe a bit early for him, but he should do okay. 120pts ish season imo.
