The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not that I'll be there, not been in the FFS leagues and bar the last 2 seasons not a great history, but I'd like to take a look when it has been.

Right now Team Id's wont work (otherwise I could just see your team in advance of GW1 😉 )

So, yes, you do have to build player by player for now.

Once the season starts, you can enter your id and it will restore it and remember your team id and lineup.

In the unlikely event Hull do score a goal Koren; who plays in the hole, on pens, FKs and corners; is very likely to be involved in the goal. He seems central to Hull's attack. I think his price should have been 5.5 🙂

Yes. However, I'm not that keen on two cheap midfielders, especially with so much quality further up a price class.

Depends on where you've put you money though. Going for Aguero/RvP, I guess Koren/Jarvis would be a good move.

Before you do, just take this into consideration:

Koren was injured towards the end of last season, so wasn't on the pitch to take a penalty. or a corner. or a free kick.

Still, I think Hull only had 3 penalties last season (first scored by Koren, second scored by Brady, third missed by Poschwitz. I know Koren wasn't on the pitch for the Poschwitz one. I don't *think* he was for the Brady one either, but not 100%)

Brady usually takes free kicks and most corners though, even when Koren is on the pitch. But it wouldn't be right to say that Koren is not on pens.

I put it down to Koren's old age, I suppose. I know he did play most of Hull's matches last season, was injured towards the end.

But Brady only joined Hull in November (and, FYI, Koren's penalty was probably in November). So maybe that's why he doesn't have as many minutes? He did play pretty much every match last season.

Koren had more apps than Brady but I didn't follow Hull so don't know about injuries...

Even with less apps Brady made 13 assists to Koren's 5. Even though Koren scored more I don't think that Hull MIDs will score as much with the new forwards...

What cheap offensive rotations are people looking at?

I currently have my eye on a Hull/Palace rotation with Thomas/Gayle and Graham/Koren. Gives me:

TOT,NOR,SUN,CAR,SWA,WHM,AVL,FUL,ARS,SUN,EVE/sot,CPL,nor,WHM,CAR, STO for the first 16.

Price total of 10.0, any better?

A guy named Alfonso Alves also had pretty good stats.

However, I agree with the Bony praise. But will probably wait until GW 5 or 7 to get him. Avoiding the tough fixtures, gets to see how he settels into the PL and ready for Swanseas great fixtures from GW 7 and onwards.

Which Chelsea players are you transferring out in GW2? I'm looking at Hazard to HBA to start saving up some cash before a possible RvP transfer, and also maybe Luiz to a cheaper defender, although I might keep him through the United match. Not sure on Lukaku though.

Because Liverpool are away and Southampton are at home in those weeks. If you play Gazzaniga and he is selected you get a keeper at home. If he doesn't play Mignolet is automatically brought in instead.

Likelihood of starting is very important when selecting a captain too. Its incredibly risky to pick two players that will score high if they start but are strong rotation risks because there's a chance you will end up with no captain at all. If you pick someone who is just a little bit worse but nailed on there's little risk involved.

The more I tinker the more I seem happier to plan to get RVP for GW4. Will need a -4 though if prices dictate as I really want to save the WC until after GW4!

    Currently on...

    Mignolet (Lewis)
    Luiz, Koscielny, Collins, Clyne (B.Turner)
    Bale Hazard Walcott (Koren Thomas)
    Aguero JRod Lukaku

Then Hazard, Aguero Luiz -----> HBA/Snodgrass, RVP, Zabaleta in time for GW4. Prefer HBA fixtures after GW4 so can also do Lukaku--->7.5-7 FWD for -4 to help finance it.

Thoughts, sound plan assuming in injuries/suspensions? Also is the bum too big?

Hi guys, I would really appreciate some advice here. A bit worried about my lack of Arsenal and City coverage. As it stands I have....

    Mignolet Given

    Luiz Coleman Collins Clyne Parr

    Bale Hazard Coutinho Snodgrass Mirallas

    Berbatov Lukaku Rodriguez

    Any thoughts?

Nice balance to all that. I guess the thing here is that you'll have to bench someone from the mids / forwards who a. are worth a fair bit b. could score points against any team, so you'll get the inevitable 'points on the bench' frustration some weeks.

Forget Arsenal. What about coverage from the current champions?
