The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

Registered users can click here to upgrade their account.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

no, could be Kun, I'll just leave 2 in the bank, so that when I downgrade Luiz I'll have the option of swapping either Tekkers or Lukaku for Kun.

this is what I'm thinking, but I'll need to keep one of Tekkers or Lukaku GW2 since I'll be swapping Luiz out. Tekkers plays my keeper, Lukaku plays my team

Lukaku out is the more obvious choice as he may not start vs United. I'd keep Tekkers, home to Pool.

I can't believe I am actually considering building a team for the first two gameweeks and then wildcarding. Only for the reason of getting a good early score, see what players are starting and jump on band wagons early. Hopefully I won't be considering this in a couple of days

I posted this on the last page, but does anyone think that these Oil Wealthy clubs are kinda killing football? Obviously if you're a City or Chelsea fan you couldn't give a damn and will claim that anyone who argues that they are is just bitter, and I guess in a sense they'd be right, as only the most ethical fan would be against having the same financial revenues at their club. To me it seems each league has its top dog/s that hoovers up everything and doesn't give others chance. Bayern, Barca & Real, PSG & Monaco, City & Chelsea, perhaps Juve & Napoli, though Series A seems to have a more levelled playing field. I think it's crap for football myself. Wish the Oil Clubs would piss off and form their own league, then we can go down the Rugby Union/League route. Know that Madrid, Barca, ain't oil wealthy, but they do exploit their league's TV revenue.

      2x 4.5 keepers

I got up to 113m at one point, stalled at the end of the season tho. If you play your wildcard early you can get it up to 103/4m pretty quickly.

i have no screenshot but quickly went to 110m after xmas it didnt go up much as i started concentrating more on points than price rises , plus you start losing built up value when you sell a player that had multiple rises

No sorry. But it's much easier to build team value early and then it tails off. Played wc gw3 last year. TV was about 110m by Jan WC I think.

No screenshot, but averaged about a million per week the first few weeks then slowed up a bit. Always aim to get to 110 by half way through the season (happy to take hits to get there), then clamp down on hits / don't worry about value that much afterwards.

My logic is that 100 mil gets you c. 2000 points in a season, so each million is worth 20 points per season. 10 million extra in team value for the second half of the season is thus c. 100 additional points, so I'm happy to spend up to half that in hits in the front half...

Think there might be a slight flaw with the projections. Its not really a flaw rather a misleading way of showing a players GW score prediction

Lets take Mannone the suderland keeper

      here are his projections for the first six weeks 2.08 , 2.11 , 2.28 , 2.29 , 2.28 2.4
way below the keepers from c plalace etc. The reason is because he is down for less minutes during the course of the season.
However when looking to select a team for the week those stats are misleading. If he plays then his predicted score would be around 3.5 but if he dosent play it zero. I would rather make my own judgment on him starting or not and would rather see a total that reflected his score if he did start rather than a dumbed down season average

Thoughts? hope it not too rambling

That's not a flaw, that's exactly what they should do. RMT shows the expected points. Expected points = Points if player plays x odds of playing. If your own judgement differs that's fine, but RMT gives the scouts judgements which for what it's worth I think are pretty damn good.

Anyone taking the "one punt" early on?
Not a DGW punt like Lukaku, a proper one.

My view is, it can be a smart move to take one cheapish attacker who you think may be under priced.

Cheap so that if it back fires, the cost isnt too high. And as its cheap, it should fund a bigger, safer name somewhere else.

Attacker because they have much higher potential as a differential. And if they start well and are cheap, their value will fly up.

Last year, I took this approach on a certain Mr Michu week 1 and it paid off as we all know. The punt in my view should be nailed on and have a history goal scoring. Importantly though, I think they have to have been researched a bit and viewed for playing style on YouTube at least.

This season, I am taking such a punt on a player who to me seems like they are made for English football ... Andreas Cornelius. At £5.5m, I think this guy has it in him to spring a few surprises. Anyone else taking a gamble on one unknown quantity? If so, who?

Its a clear risk, but have you seen him?
          He seems a good player.

When I got michu, i YouTubed expecting some wee Spanish dribbling type. When I saw his height and heading ability I was convinced to get him.

I expected Cornelius to be a slow crouch type who could use their height properly and had clumsy feet.

He seems to jump really well and bullets his headers. And he somehow has decent pace. And his left foot seems to generate excellent shot power and he actually seems pretty handy on the ball too.

Ramirez if I was to pick one, you don't cost 12m, play for your national team and get linked to big teams such as pool/inter for no reason.

6m in fpl is a very fair price.

What did RMT make of Michu last season , before the season kicked off?

There were plenty of us who had him GW1 he wasnt really a differential , was clearly underpriced as his scoring record in spain was very impressive , i think from memory he was the second highest scoring midfielder in the spanish league
