The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

Registered users can click here to upgrade their account.

New users can click here to sign up.

For further details on the benefits offered by our membership, view this page.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

In continuation of the Zaha Discussion,

I totally think that the most value this season will be in the United Midfield.

Zaha/Nani/Young/Kagawa/Valencia....one of them will surely emerg as a must have! I think this will be a key to having a successful squad in this years FPL

Can't see any of them nailing down their places, apart from Kagawa really. He'll be where the value lies. Zaha needs to show more evidence of scoring goals, or doing it against prem standard defenders. Nani and Valencia just need to find their 1st season form again.

not sure about this. last year they were all abysmal, which makes utd's success in real life all the more unfathomable. that said maybe 1 of them will emerge, but of them it would have to be zaha or kagawa, don't see a resurgence in any of the others

I have a few questions regarding some players starting or being first choice:

The Southampton Goalkeeper is it Davis or Boruc as these are two of the cheapest Keepers but not sure which is first choice.

James Collins of West Ham - cheap route into the west ham defense, played about the same minutes as Demel last season but is he first choice?

Lukaku - Is he the likeliest to play both games for the Che DGW - what are people opinion?

Anelka - is he going to even play and is he cheap because he's not first choice - could be huge value if he plays, also wont he cry if he doesant so surely he will play?

      Yes

I think he's the likeliest to start one, probably a bench cameo in the other.

      Won't play regularly imo.

This is what I have done for the last 2 years with reasonable effect (finishing around 40K and last year finishing at 4199). This time I will try to resist the building of team value that can be gained and save WC for when I really need it. If I need early 4pt hits then so be it. Will only use it after GW3 if suspensions, injuries etc dictate.

Though currently I have nothing in bank so may need a -4 for finance RVP for GW4

Gareth Bale and Daniel Levy's Strategy:

OK so according to some media sources Real Madrid have bid have bid E100m for Bale...this would be a world record transfer fee but it's also been reported that Levy has turned down the offer which has raised a few eyebrows on here

Well if you ask me I think Real Madrid have made a mistake and I'll tell you why

Look at it from Levy's point of view...he has nothing to gain by accepting this offer such a long time before the transfer window closes and he's got lots to lose.

In 2-3 weeks either Real or another club might have upped the offer. If he sells now while he is still trying to buy players their clubs will demand more money. The lack of Champion's League football means the quality players Spurs are trying to buy are most probably not beating down Levy's door to get in just now and if Bale is sold some of them won't come and others will ask for more money

Nor do we know the terms of the offer...Man Utd got an £80million bank transfer for Ronaldo but the Real offer for Bale might have all sorts of conditional terms and payments by instalments

Bale will still be worth E100m to Real in 3 weeks time and most probably he'll still command a similar fee in 12 months...but let's not forget that the English clubs have had a 40% bump in TV money this year and PSG and Monaco are capable of splashing mega-bucks around...who knows who's been ringing Levy this summer?

Levy would not turn down 100m, waiting another 2-3 weeks would be suicide as they would not be able to use the funds... Total nonsense post.

well (assuming the reports are correct of course) he has turned down the offer

players can be bought very quickly at the end of the window...everything can be agreed in advance with the club and the player...if we sell bale tomorrow we will pay you this transfer fee Mr Chairman and we'll pay you Mr Player these wages...fitness tests can be done in advance

sometimes a deal can be done in a couple of days I'm sure

In fact it's not impossible Spurs will sell Bale and buy Suarez...the only team Spurs can realistically beat to get in the Champions League this season are Arsenal...if Arsenal got Suarez it's hard to imagine Spurs could beat them

Lads there is a general sense that the saints defence is set to offer a decent source of points this season.

Im a saints fan of 25+ years, A word of warning, any saints fan will tell you we are anything but solid at the back. The general concerns is that we still lack quality in our centre back positions.

I hear evidence being given that MoPo improved us defensively, which is true to an extent, but lets be honest he was coming off a low base. The signing of Wanyama is supposed to us sure up our defence and we have great opening fixtures.

The reality is that preseason is already showing we haven't improved that much at the back. Lovers has looked average and yoshida (his likely starting partner) is good but prone to concentration lapses that generally lead to goals. We have already seen some shocking defending against schalka - both goals were firmly in the keystone cops bracket.

Clyne offers value as he will get attacking returns, however note he has picked up a knock in training so isnt currently playing (chambers has started all 4 at RB) but the Bourc + other keeper is questionable at best.

Saints fans are optimists by nature, we have to be 🙂 but when I hear members talking about a twoose with saints as one of those teams I tend to cringe...... Obviously run you own race but just wanted to give a fans perspective.

I think MoPo prefers Jrod, and we are still looking for another striker, Lambert is 31 and its been questioned whether he can play MoPos high pressing game (Lamberts talked about needing a 3rd lung). For the time being I expect Jrod to get more game time, but lambert will still be on set pieces and penos. If we sign another striker then lambert wouldn't be nailed on.
