Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

Those of you who played last season - what are your 5 main rules of FPL.

From what I learnt from my first season last year it was:

    1. Avoid hits - most of the time your player brought in won't earn more than the 4 points spent and the 2 points minimum (probably) your last player would've got.

    2. Stick to your players - if you buy a player in and they score 2 for the first week you have them don't get fed up and sell them immediately.

    3. Once ahead, stay ahead - If you are leading in a league don't start going for a team full of 'punts' (ik odd for me to say) for fun.

    4. Make your transfers on a friday night - don't risk a player becoming injured in the week and a couple times last year I left it to about 11:27 uhming and ahing and then my internet stopped on my phone or something and i made none.

    5. Be a member on a great FPL site like fantasyfootballscout.co.uk 😉

Agreed...last year I waited until Friday many weeks and I ended up losing lots of 0.1's all over the place. It definitely cost me some dropped Team Value by year end, and I was usually going to get the one player each week anyway and just chose to be more cautious. This year as soon as I have identified my target I'm going to pull the transfer trigger.

      1 No hits are fun
2 Get rid of dead wood quick ! how many hung on to Silva for 10-15 weeks when he was doing nowt.
      3 ok
4 Transfers MUST be done before price rises even if it's Saturday evening, very few players got injured between games and even so that extra 2 or 3 million to be made from rises more than outweighs the once a season 4 point hit
      5 Good idea 😉

      Interesting.

I disagree with your first two right away. Hits is relative. If you're doing well, you don't need to take hits because you have the best players in. However, if you're lagging behind early on, not taking hits will just put you even further behind.

2 is true only to a degree. Managers need to be ruthless and cut non-performing players.

4 is one of the big ones which I always don't heed. I love my price rises, and saving that 0.1m is something I like doing even at the risk of the player being injured. This has bitten me in the ass 3 times over the last 3 seasons though, so it's not usually a big issue.

I'm not gonna write down a set of 5 rules of my own, but I am gonna comment on yours 🙂

      1. I don't agree with this one. Every potenial hit needs to be carefully assessed. Some should be taken, others not.
      2. I agree, but keep an eye on the stats. There's no shame in admitting a mistake.
      3. Playing the best team you can all the time, irrelevant of mini-league position, is what it's about for me.
      4. Unless there's a price rise issue, Im doing it Friday night or Saturday morning, yes.
      5. Absolutely.

Not when there are some other medium-priced defenders with better fixtures and the Chelsea DGW. Perhaps once the dust settles he'd be worth a shout. I think some people are put off by the fact that whilst Martinez is more attacking in his style this might come at the cost of clean sheets.

      For the most part, yes...
      - Players who did well last year like Benteke, Coutinho etc. are priced perfectly so that you still consider them, but they're not in everybody's team as they would be otherwise. (Add Michu to this, if his fixtures weren't so bad to start.)
      - Bale and RVP priced such that people are variously considering going with neither, one, or both.
      - Premium defenders priced cheap enough that not everyone will just cram their team with ubers, which also helps with variety.

REPOST from previous article as I am interested in people's defense tactics:-

    Is defense rotation overrated?

I have been looking at the best suggested rotation for the start which would be EVE/NOR/SUN/STK for a 2* two-way rotation, then having Mertesacker as my regular starter. Looking at the prices this would cost me about 24.5m.

I then started looking at all the potentially good 5m to 5.5m defenders for top clubs, so in addition to Mert you have Kaboul, Coleman, Toure, Nasty etc. For less then the rotation approach I could just go with the following for 24m:-

    Mert 5.5m, Kaboul 5m, Coleman 5m (Cardiff 4m + Norwich 4.5m Turners)

Anyone else have views on this?

      ok, 6/10

Im gonna apply the structure that seems to be most popular with my own twist..

I'd downgrade one of luiz or ivan to 5.5 and upgrade one of nolan or mirallas to 9/9.5

I favour altidore over aspas (between you and me....oh) and other wise Id just prefer to have bale in there over RVP, although admittedly there are more nailed on options in midfield to replace him than RVP.

      Bon chance

Koren is a really decent 5th midfielder. He takes penalties and has free kick duties. He was hulls leading goal getter last campaign. He won't blow your mind with points but he will start and be involved in Hull's goals. For 5 points what more could you ask.

I’ve put together some data from last season and prepared a small comparison tool where one can see the performance of specific group of players and compare them based on certain criteria.

The excel file can be found here:

    http://wikisend.com/download/919080/pirate's FPL Comparison Tool.xlsx

    That criteria are the below:

    - Price (specific or range)
    - Gameweek (specific or range)
    - Position
    - Tom 10 teams’ players
    - Top 5 teams’ players
    - Bottom 10 teams’ players
    - Minutes Played (per match) [if 45 minutes chosen for instance, it means that the performance of somebody who played less than that in a game will not be taken into account in the results]
    - Top Scoring 100 players
    - Home/Away

    It looks as below:
    http://s12.postimg.org/hperocnt9/Tool1.jpg

So there three main things to do:
    1) Change the criteria on the grey cells

    2) See the box and whisker plot.
    a. In the example above we see that between the two selections the only difference is the Home/Away performance. For the top ones(Home)
    i. the lowest 25% of performances received up to 2 points.
ii. The next 25% (the pink box) was from 2 to 3 points. (So, 50% of the players that cost that money performed to a max of 3 points at Home)
iii. The next 25% is the green box goes from 3 to 6.
iv. Finally 25% of the players scored from 6 to 15.
    v. Their average points was 4.2 with a standard deviation (st.dev.) of 3
vi. The average bonus points were 0.5.
vii. 122 records were used that came from 14 unique players

    b. For the away performances:
    i. the lowest 25% of performances received up to 2 points.
ii. The next 25% (the pink box which is not even visible) was again up to 2 points. So at least 25% of them scored just 2 points. Aggregated, 50% of them scored up to 2 points. Slightly lower than when played home.
iii. The next 25% bucket (from 50% to 75%) the score goes from 2 to 5. Again a bit lower than home.
iv. The best 25% away performances received a score between 5 and 18.
    v. The average points were also lower=3.8 but had a similar st. deviation (of 3)
vi. The average bonus was 0.4
vii. Total of 121 records with 14 unique players as well.

As you can see you can change things in the criteria to make this more meaningful for your own observations. For instance you might want to look only at top 5 sides when you look at expensive defenders etc…

    3) Next to that there are is another graph where you can see the average points per gameweek. Gives a nice quick picture of the seasonal volatility.

There are two more tabs with some tables that show the difference of performance between home and away just for you to take a quick look.

*2012-13 data used. Note that the prices used in every calculation were dynamic and were then rounded to 0.5. So if a player cost 5.0 for 2 gameweeks and 5.3 for the rest 36. His performance when he used to cost 5.0 will be in that group, while the other 36 will be grouped under the 5.5 one.
** For those not familiar with the box & whisker plot and the median logic, I suggest you take a look somewhere (e.g. wiki) before you start playing around with the tool.
*** Use Microsoft Office 2010 (2003/2007 will NOT work properly)

Let me know if anything is unclear.

    Cheers,
    pirate

I literally shuddered at that forward line.
Downgrade that defence go Cole Kosc 4.5 if you must have cole.

Great midfield but stats show that forwards score more points so I'd downgrade one or two in order to get a stronger front line.

    Advice, please:

If I want Chelsea defensive coverage for the DGW, *but* am wildcarding after GW3, is it a good idea to splurge on Cech instead of Cole, Terry et al?

Yes, he'll be on the bench in GW3 because of no fixture, but he won't take up one of the three valuable spots otherwise taken up by Hazard, maybe Mata, maybe a Villa player, plus usual bench fodder...

    Thoughts?

Thanks. I was considering Delph as a cheap fifth, just to play in GW1 (likely four points rather than 2, plus good passing ratio, so you never know if he'll chip in with bonus points in the unlikely event of a 0-0), then bench him for GW2-3.

Down side to Cech is that Hull/Villa may not get many chances, so saves points very limited, would look like 12 pts tops. Ig you go with a Luiz/Terry/Ivano/Cole, you will have same CS chances, but also assist/goal threat, so poss 15-18 pts over DGW, if you're lucky.

In short both have limited downside, Def has better upside potential.

Betting suspended on Bale's transfer to Real. Does that mean it's a done deal?

In deed. No, it merely means bookies haven't got a clue, they close the book when they believe the market has more info than they do.

You can still get 8/11 with Brokelads
      Possibly just updating their price.

Wow. Just saw the report on the death of Ecuador star player Christian Benitez. He used to play for Birmingham when he was young, but didn't really become a world class player until he moved to Mexico's Liga MX. He was an absolute beast of a player, easily the leagues best player for the last 3 years. 20+ goals a season, usually a Golden Boot winner. There were talks that he would move to Porto or InterMilan or to the PL last year... Dead at only 27.

I think 'you're' missing some grammar...

I bet the RIP, but I don't know him, why do I care? If media hadn't covered it, nobody on here would have an inkling, nor give a jot.

          Anyway, let's move swiftly on...

You don't have to care. A footballer has died. When they die, fans mourn. No one is forcing you to mourn. You can just ignore it, simple. However, you would rather use it as an opportunity to say something insensitive and stupid as usual..

'As usual.' On what do you base that? My observation was based on my relationship, as a fan to player, so I wrote something material.

For all I know he might have been a monster off the pitch, and you know no different, but you prefer to post a pointless RIP message and a faux-emotional badge.

Any way, I will now move on...

If you want to call him a shite striker because he played one year for a shite club like Birmingham, then fine, The rest of the world respects him for his time at club America and Santos. He was top man for Ecuador as well.

        RIP

The fact of the matter is a professional of the sport we love has died. Surely a little compassion is far more important than my poor grammar!
