Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

So, after a slow start, and a lot of negative posts on here relating to our / Big Sam's style, we manage to win a 5 goal thriller. That'll do!

There's no denying that at we'll regularly go direct to Carroll, but I'm hopeful we can mix it up a bit more than last year.... we've got some decent ball players in midfield (Nolan not included) and would love to see Ravel get some gametime

I started writing this post a couple hours ago then got sidetracked by work. Yeah, work is a distraction 😀 But anyhow, here it is.

What works in FPL from experience (some which might not be applicable this season):
    - Getting at least 3 DGWers each DGW
    - Picking cheap rotating goalies
    - Picking 4.0 bench fodder from promoted clubs
    - Having 3 bona fide captains (RVP, Bale, Suarez)
    - Doubling in defense on good fixtures
    - Doubling in attack on high potential players (Bale + Van der Vaart)
    - Playing 3-4-3
    - Splashing the cash on the front 8
    - Choosing team talismans over 2nd best players from better teams (i.e. Snodgrass over Ramsey/Wilshere)
    - Taking early hits/getting on bandwagons at the start of the season (broad, but even if they don't perform, they raise team value)
    - Playing wildcard early (again, situational, but I've found it works. Last year, the winner used his GW 2)
    - Captaining one of the top 3 picks from the weekly captain poll (RvP if undecided)
    - Using TotalFPL or Fiso to keep track of price changes

What doesn't work in FPL (again, some may not be applicable this season)
    - Playing 4 defenders regularly
    - Having expensive goalies
    - Having non-playing cheap players (Ferguson springs to mind - they lose value and are deadweight)
    - Staying with off-form players because their fixtures get better
    - Making transfers early in the week (injuries do happen and muck things up)
    - Waiting until the very last minute to make transfers (do them Friday night)
    - Choosing players based on popularity (not really a problem on here)
    - Planning transfers more than 3 weeks in advance (almost never pans out, not really a case of it not working, but it's wasted effort)
    - Making starting probability/fitness a decisive factor over points potential(I remember the first year I played seriously, I captained Drogba first week even though he was "an injury risk" and he hit a hat-trick. Last year, I got hurt by it. I picked Cole over Ivanovic because he was more nailed on. Ended up 12 points worse off after just 1 week)
    - Picking players for coverage (sometimes you've got to avoid that burst of nice fixtures from Everton because they are just in terrible form)
    - Picking differentials because you need to make up ground (this is controversial, but I firmly believe that unless there are less than 3 weeks to go, you can make up any number of points with smart, logical transfers and some luck with the captains armband. If you need a differential, use the armband not your players)

            - Waiting until the very last minute to make transfers (do them Friday night)
Not sure how this changes anything

            - Playing 4 defenders regularly
Defenders are becoming much more valuable per pound - could be the new meta this season

            - Choosing players based on popularity (not really a problem on here)
            Exactly the problem on here...

But can I just say, this one
            - Doubling in defense on good fixtures
This one over and over again.
I cannot tell you how much I want to punch people when I read a response to a perfectly good RMT with - you don't want 2 defenders from [xx].
Last season if you doubled up on Stoke/West Ham rotation - you'd be doing ok...

I don't know, Long Juan, maybe because this site isn't reserved for people who have been playing the game for 4 years? You are aware that numbers playing increase every year, right? Logic therefore dictates that at least some of them are beginners, to whom beginner-oriented posts might seem quite helpful. I mean, nobody would be presuming to teach you anything since you are already incredibly knowledgeable on all matters FPL but back when you were ranking in the low 2 millions, surely a post such as the above would have proved highly beneficial to your game, no?

      - Picking cheap rotating goalies
Probably false this year with Mignolet coming in at 5.5 and there being no obvious 2x 4.5 rotation.

      - Having 3 bona fide captains (RVP, Bale, Suarez)
Too expensive this season (assuming RvP and Bale both stay). We're going to have to get creative/lucky here

      - Playing wildcard early (again, situational, but I've found it works. Last year, the winner used his GW 2)
Alternative analysis shows that the top 100 players had a higher usage in GW33 last year than those in top 10,000. One player doesn't make a sample size. Still a large number did use it in the first 3 GWs

I've been burned more than I've been helped especially after last season (I bought Noble after reports he was fit again, turns out the reports later in the week ruled him out for 3 weeks. I then got rid and bought another WHam mid) It's a problem for me since I'm a kneejerker, but I'm gonna try and resist this season.

The WC early is the one that really sticks out to me. I'm in my 8th season now so maybe I am a bit old school as we didn't have the luxury of one let alone two WC's back in those days but I can only see that there are 3 good reasons to use one early. The first has only really become a strategy in the last two years thanks to Chelsea's European success and that is the DGW right off the bat. Personally I think this season with Villa's horrible fixtures its best to stay clear of them all together and you can easily get 3 Chelsea players in and then either out or safely benched come GW3 and so you don't need the WC imo, secondly is because you are a value whore and you have a huge drive to get on every bandwagon as you believe that team value is the ultimate differential, with more and more FPL managers playing every year this becomes a stronger and stronger tactic I believe as the casual players drive the market so strongly during the first few weeks but I believe this tactic can be made redundant by simply not falling into the third category as we know the casual player will ignore the DGW and that Hazard and the likes will benefit from this massively. Third Reason = YOU PICKED A BAD TEAM TO START OFF WITH and need wholesale change. So as good and well informed managers, which even if you aren't the former with some excellent wealth of knowledge that is on this forum you will soon become the latter very quickly, I don't believer that is a good tactic as there is more to gain later in the season when you really have big DGW's to take advantage of and you have so much more knowledge to use to make the choices. I still don't see how after 2-3 weeks we can really answer the important questions like starting City forwards and proven Man U midfielders any more accurately than we will be able to the Friday before the season kicks off.

You named 3 good reasons to WC early, and one not very good reason to WC later.

I'll add one more into the early wagon. To streamline your team. If you WC say week 8, you get long term benefits of the WC, you can replace your cheap bench fodder and set your keepers for the season. It's little things like that. I had Jaask and Federici last year. Bad idea. So I WC'ed in week 6 or so to get Begovic at 4.5m and he came good for the rest of the season.

I also had Danny Gabbidon who got sent off then had mixed time, replaced him with Demel who was a mainstay in my team almost the whole season.

I also got on the Bale wagon again, picked up Suarez, and basically laid the framework for the next 20 weeks or so. The earlier you use it, the more benefit you'll see long-term imo.

I would like to think that more over I named 3 good reasons not to use it early! But I guess that I will add that suspensions and critical injuries are more prevalent later in the season and so the emergency option of the WC is great to have in your locker and could make a much bigger differential if say 3-4 of the form players miss game time at crunch times of the year, a lot more so than having an extra chelsea player who may or most likely will not have play twice in a game week right off the bat.

I still think GW6 is early but I am really talking about those who are planning to use it in GW2 or 3 of which there seem to be plenty and to which was mentioned in terms of Matt's use last season to win it all. I would really love to know what he actually thinks of his use of it and whether or not it was planned before the season started and whether or not he sees the same value in doing it again this season.

Would you elaborate a bit on this point: "Pick cheap rotating goalies"?

That is, do you have some numbers to support this or is more a gut feeling?

Guess what I'm curious about, is if you're able to prove that your two 'rotating keeper's' weekly scores would have faired better than simply playing a single 'heavy hitter' throughout the year?

The best proof would be the total points from the likes of Begovic and Jusi last season. They both started at 4.5 and dominated all season. Rotating them would have given you the most points.

This has often been the case in prior seasons as well.

i.e. GW1 total transfers, Gw2 total transfers .... GW 26 total transfers etc

I agree with you on early transfers. I think they are extremely important in helping to build team value. Of course it is best to leave it as late as possible if their price is not set to rise. Keeping an eye on Fiso is key.

I'm not a fan of doubling in attack. I certainly don't think it is necessary as it wouldn't work every time. Ultimately you are buying two players who will have a share of the points that that team accumulates. I think it is better to stick with individual talisman's as you pointed out. That way you should get a greater share of a teams points.

Everyone touting that they have Kim:
Yes he's 5.0, but whu MCI EVE hul TOT ful NEW che nor SWA for the first 10?

That's one of the hardest line ups period, let alone for newly promoted Cardiff. He might be 5.0 now, but he's not going to score enough points to be worth anything at the moment.

Koren, Marveaux, Wanyama are also 5.0. Wouldn't someone else make a little bit more sense for now? Or investing a little bit more and then downgrading to Kim later?

I think the logic is that people don't want to have to use a transfer on their 5th mid more than once or twice a season, so just get the guy who looks like he has the biggest upside in now.

Not. Now it's a question of doing the sideways move to Gerrard - or getting in Snodgrass (who I think is immense value) and upgrading my strikers.

It's interesting. I still think his upside far exceeds his downside.

Although if Sturridge is fit, he's in. There's no two aways about that in my mind. If he starts, his PPG ratio destroys all other Liverpool players last season (including Coutinho)

Sturridge was one of the first names on my team this season - reading these forums made me doubt myself.

I think I'm going to go back to that plan

Yep. If it helps, I whole heartedly back that plan. One of the first names on my team since the pricing came out and just been see-sawing on that injury. If there's a 70% chance he plays, he'll start for me.

Here's where I'm at - where would you try find the extra:

            Mignolet/Jakupovic
            Mertesacker/Cole/Collins/Turner/Brayford
            Mirallas/Snodgrass/Walcott/Hazard/Thomas

I think Sturridge vs Coutinho when they are both the same price is a no brainer... Sturridge all the way. He will score more goals and is involved heavily in goals.

Well I left that to the reader, I just think he has become this automatic pick for a lot of people and I wanted to ask whether his price was right or whether he has been over-valued by FPL. Certainly at 9m, it has got people thinking twice about him. If he was 7.5m or something then I would not be telling people to wonder about his potential value. But when he is ranked amongst the 'elite' mids I started to question this and wonder whether a 21 year old who is new to the league is really worth that price. I'm asking the question to open a debate not form a solid conclusion.

Personally, I am going to monitor him as I would like him to prove he is a 9m mid first.

I need someone on this site to ensure by any means necessary that I do not somehow start with Adel Taarabt in my team. It's happened two years in a row now and I'm worried it's going to happen again.

You must not enable me. I will, at some point, come up with reason enough that he's excellent value to convince myself to make the move. This must not be allowed to happen.

Rest looks fine. I'm not keen on Kagawa with the new manager and the rough fixtures. Get Mirallas for a similar price. Also, Bellamy could be replaced too. Kim is the flavor of the day.
