Nicolas Anelka grabs a hat-trick as West Brom hit Cork City for six. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel opens his account for Norwich, Shola Ameobi scores again for Newcastle, Sergio Aguero is set to return to training for City, while Luis Suarez goes public with his intentions to leave Liverpool.

AIK 1 Man United 1
David Moyes’ side could only manage a draw in yesterday evening’s clash in Sweden. The United boss named a back-four of Rafael, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, while further up the pitch Wilfried Zaha and Nani started on the flanks, with Robin Van Persie handed the lone forward role. Moyes made five changes during the match, though two were enforced, after Nani and Evans limped out of the proceedings – the Portuguese winger’s replacement, Angelo Henriquez, grabbed the Red Devils’ only goal courtesy of a Zaha assist.

After the game, Moyes gave an update on the injured duo and also spoke on Wayne Rooney’s progress from a shoulder injury ahead of Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial:

“Jonny actually got kneed on the ankle. He thought that he was going to be able to run it off. But if we left him on then it would only have got worse for him. Nani just felt his groin tighten up and he didn’t want to take any risks. Neither did we. We thought it was safer to take him off at that time….I don’t think he [Rooney] will be fit for Friday. There is still a chance, but I don’t think he will be. It is not a serious injury, but the problem we’ve got with the Wembley game on Sunday is that he has not played so we need to take that into consideration. Is his fitness more of a concern than his future? Yes. We’re trying to get Wayne into a condition where he is ready to play.”

Vidic also spoke to the club’s official website after his first appearance of the summer. Having played the entire match, though, the skipper believes he is firmly on course to be ready for the season opener at Swansea a week on Saturday:

“I am pleased that I have 90 minutes under my belt. It’s a long time since I’ve played a full game. I am pleased with that and I hope that after this game I can pick up my fitness and I will be ready for the beginning of the season. It’s frustrating when you don’t get the games. I’ve done some good training, but it’s different when you’re playing a match. I got 90 minutes tonight and we have two more games before the start of the league season. Hopefully I can get another 90 minutes before then.”

Norwich 1 Real Sociedad 1
Chris Hughton rolled out his preferred 4-4-1-1 formation once again, with Ricky Van Wolfswinkel leading the line and fellow new boy Leroy Fer fielded behind in “the holeâ€. The Canaries boss also handed starts to Martin Olsson at left-back, while Russell Martin shifted to centre-half in Seb Bassong’s continued absence, allowing Steven Whittaker to slot in at right-back. Norwich took the lead within a quarter of an hour after Van Wolfswinkel grabbed his first goal since arriving from Sporting Lisbon this summer – Fer nodded down a Robert Snodgrass cross for his compatriot to open his account. Hughton made six alterations over the course of the second period, affording the likes of Gary Hooper just 10 minutes game time, but the hosts were unable to find another goal.

After the game, Hughton revealed John Ruddy was absent due to a back problem but is certain his first-choice stopper will return in time for Saturday’s friendly with Greek side Panathinaikos:

“He just felt his back a couple of days ago and it would have been a little bit of a risk to play him in this game but he is fine. He will be fit and available for Saturday. He has trained right the way through the pre-season and had no injury problems at all. There has never been any trace of a recurrence of the (thigh) injury he had last season. He has got that good base of fitness work behind him over the summer and this is just unfortunate timing. We could have risked him in this game but it is important he is available to train and play this weekend.”

Cork City 0 West Brom 6
Steve Clarke tinkered with his starting formation yet again last night. The Baggies boss rolled out a 4-4-2 with Shane Long partnered by Nicolas Anelka up top, while Graham Dorrans and Chris Brunt were afforded the flank roles. Anelka was the star of the show with a hat-trick for the visitors and has now notched six times in as many appearances since making his way to the Hawthorns earlier this summer. Dorrans also impressed, bagging a brace and supplying an assist from his role on the right, while Long produced a goal and assist – scoring for the first time this summer. James Morrison – one of seven second-half changes by Clarke – replaced Claudio Yacob in central midfield and provided a couple of assists from his more withdrawn berth. Jonas Olsson was rested as the Baggies look to avoid any more lay-offs from an Achilles problem, while Gabriel Tamas was sidelined with a knee problem.

Anelka was understandably praised by the Baggies number two Keith Downing after the match, who also gave an update on the fitness conditions of new boy Diego Lugano:

“He’s (Anelka) been great. He’s settled in really, really well. The other players like him a lot. He brings a lot of qualities to the team. The more games he plays, their knowledge of how he works is growing….Diego’s a bit behind the other lads in terms of pre-season work. He’s probably a week to ten days behind. We’ve still got 11 days until the first game and he’ll be working with our fitness guys between now and then.”

Eintracht Braunschweig 2 Hull 0
The Tigers were somewhat under-strength as Steve Bruce made six changes to his side for last night’s defeat in Germany. Allan McGregor, Ahmed Elmohamady, Robert Koren and Curtis Davies were amongst the regulars omitted as the Hull boss opted to hand some fringe players the chance to impress. Danny Graham partnered Sone Aluko up top but again failed to open his account and was one of nine players subbed off in the second period, with only Maynor Figueroa and Paul McShane lasting the full 90 minutes.

Glasgow Rangers 1 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 formation for last night’s draw in Scotland. Tim Krul returned from injury to take his place between the sticks and lined up behind a strong looking defence, with Mathieu Debuchy, Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Davide Santon getting the nod. Further up the field, Hatem Ben Arfa and Jonas Gutierrez patrolled the flanks, while Moussa Sissoko was handed an advanced role in “the hole†behind Papiss Cisse. Debuchy and Taylor were the only two players to manage the full 90 minutes as Shola Ameobi – on for Papiss Cisse with just 17 minutes remaining – continued his superb summer form by scoring for the fourth time in four appearances, with his late leveller ensuring the Magpies a share of the spoils.

After the match, Pardew confirmed Coloccini was subbed off with a groin pull but was confident the problem was no more than minor. The Magpies boss also revealed he’s still in the market for new faces up front and questioned whether new boy Loic Remy will be fit in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to Man City:

“The problem we have is that he’s got a calf injury. We weren’t under the knowledge that he hadn’t trained for three weeks. So really and truly, he needs a bit of a pre-season. We’ll have to cram it in somehow. I think it would be unfair on the other players if he jumped ahead of them if he wasn’t right. He has a lot of work to do in a short amount of time. I don’t think he will make Manchester City, but he could be in condition enough to make the bench, and certainly make West Ham (on August 24)…..We need more firepower. We needed that other option to Papiss. Shola (Ameobi) is coming on nicely, and Gouff (Yoan Gouffran) is coming on too. We have a nice little pool there now. Hopefully, we still have another player to come in, maybe two.”

Dulwich Hamlet 1 Crystal Palace 4
Ian Holloway named a mixture of fringe players and first-teamers for last night’s victory. New signing Elliot Grandin was quick off the mark, grabbing a double on his debut, while Jerome Williams and Yannick Bolasie were also amongst the goals against the non-league hosts. The likes of Peter Ramage. Owen Garvan and new signing Dwight Gayle were also afforded game time, with the latter picking up an assist for Bolasie’s strike after the hour mark. Holloway replaced all 11 of his starters over the course of the game as he continues to hand his squad the chance to impress before the season gets underway.

Valencia 1 Everton 0
Roberto Martinez also utilised the depth of his squad for the final match of Everton’s US tour. Starting with four at the back again, the Spaniard named the likes of Ross Barkley, John Stones, Gerard Deulofeu, Steven Naismith, Bryan Oviedo, Joel Robles and Victor Anichebe in the XI, using the game as a chance to assess the strength of his squad. After the match, the Toffees boss explained the absence of Steven Pienaar over the last couple of games and gave an update on Nikica Jelavic, who was forced off after coming on as a second-half substitute:

“Steven Pienaar was more of a precaution. Tony Hibbert has got a bit of a niggle but in a couple of weeks he should be in full contention. Nikica Jelavic got a bit of a dead leg and he had to come off. Apart from that everyone else has been able to play their part and work for the team and that is what pre-season is all about.”

SC Braga 1 West Ham 0
Having beaten Sporting Lisbon just 24-hours beforehand, the Hammers made plenty changes to the first XI. Razvan Rat, Guy Demel and James Collins all returned at the back, while Adrian was handed a chance between the sticks as Jussi Jaaskelainen dropped to the bench. Sam Allardyce also omitted the likes of Kevin Nolan, Matt Jarvis and the in-form Ravel Morrison, rolling out a front three of Ricardo Vaz Te, Modibo Maiga and Jack Collison against the Portuguese side. The visitors made a number of changes over the course of the second-half but were unable to prevent defeat for only the second time in nine matches this summer.

In Other News
Sergio Aguero is set to return to training for Man City by the end of the week. The Argentine has failed to feature over the summer due to a knee problem, allowing Edin Dzeko the chance to rack up four goals in the last four matches, but is now set to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side a boost ahead of their final friendly of the pre-season against Arsenal. With City set to face Newcastle, Hull and Cardiff in their opening three league fixtures, Fantasy investment in Pellegrini’s frontline is on many radars, with Aguero’s imminent return likely to see interest in the Argentine elevate. Elsewhere, City have confirmed Matija Nastasic is sidelined for “four to six weeks†with an ankle injury. The youngster’s absence could bring Joleon Lescott or Micah Richards into contention as Vincent Kompany’s central defensive partner, though Pellegrini has also trialled Javi Garcia at the back in a recent friendly.

Luis Suarez has rocked the Liverpool boat in the most public of manners as he attempts to engineer a move away from Merseyside. With Arsenal still hot on his tail, the Uruguayan is clearly doing all he can to ensure he clinches a transfer to the Emirates and after pulling out of the Reds’ trip to Valerenga with a foot complaint, Suarez is now expected to submit a written transfer request by the end of the week after accusing Brendan Rodgers of going back on his word:

“I don’t feel betrayed but the club promised me something a year ago just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League. I have the club’s word and we have the written contract and we are happy to take this to the Premier League for them to decide the case but I do not want it to come to that. We have the backing of the PFA….I spoke with Brendan Rodgers several times and he told me, ‘stay another season, and you have my word if we don’t make it then I will personally make sure that you can leave’.”

While Suarez edges towards the exit door, summer signing Iago Aspas was the subject of his manager’s praise yesterday as Rodgers revealed he has wasted no time in settling on Merseyside. With Daniel Sturridge yet to feature in pre-season after an ankle injury, the former Celta Vigo man has caught the eye up front, notching three times already and providing an assist in the weekend win over Greek side Olympiakos.

“Very well, I can see that he loves being here. He has already thrown himself into the language. He is mixing with his friends very well, and you can see in and around the box he’s exciting; he’s got a nice touch, he can create something out of nothing – which I like, players that can do something a wee bit different. Overall, he and the other players have been very good.”

He seemed knackered at the start of last season due to a bad/short pre-season. Same with Mata. I'm advising caution for players involved in Confed cup in general due to how it affects their pre-season with the club.

I have several drafts, but this has to be my favourite:

    Cech**
    Cole** - Baines - GlenJ
    Walcott - Hazard** - Gerrard - Giaccherini
    Benteke** - Gabby** - Weiman**

    Bench: Zombies.
    .
The tactic's pretty obvious: Maximise GW1 score, Get a great balanced side (light defence) with a WC from GW2 and instantly get rid of the DGW debris.

Still unsure about triple Villa attack against che and ars, but they're almost guaranteed 4pts from the off so they're worth a shot imo.

    Any suggestions are most welcome.

That front 3 is disgusting. You've got double Chels defence so you're relying on all of the front 3 to perform away at Arsenal for your team to get a big score and make it worthwhile.

Definitely the safest way to go if you want 6 DGW players. If you are happy to use your WC so early on then it looks good to me. Saying that I'm not too sure about baines, seems a lot of money for a defender and everton having a different manager makes him less attractive to me.

Strictly on the assumption you are wildcarding for GW2 then why not. I'm choosing three chelsea players and none will be forwards so perhaps chuck in Villa's 3 upfront and whatever goals they may get should come through those guys and as you say most likely min 4pt return.

A refreshing view to try and get an early upper hand and I won't put you off.

I take this game far too seriously! So many forward options, it is doing my head in!

One minute, I love the look of Dzeko, the next, I can't resist Anelka. And don't get me started on Soldado, Lukaku, Strurridge, Berbatov, Benteke and the infamous RVP...

I think I've finally managed to find what I like though... I'm going without RVP because I love the midfield and defence I can afford without him. Plus, I just have a gut feeling that Man Utd won't do as well this season.

    Here it is:

    Dzeko Lukaku Soldado

Like your logic but you'd be wise to wait. Wisdom is overrated though.

Dzeko is 'allegedly' the main strikers but there are huge question marks over the reliability and accuracy of this. This is made even trickier by the fact that Aguero is returning from injury.

Lukaku is an excellent player and will probably play at least one of the games in the double gameweek against easy opposition, but how secure is his place? Again, even less secure when you consider Rooney may join.

Soldado is the only nailed on player and he is coming in from a new league, so you're gambling on all of your front three. However he has easy opposition, and if he somehow gels quickly with his team mates and continues his goal scoring form from Spain, you could be in for a treat.

It could work out very well, or very badly for you. I like your style 😉

A lot of people on here do player analysis; sometimes based on statistics, and sometimes on what they've seen. When it comes to players from other leagues, this can get tricky as the statistics are less easily available, and few get to watch games live. There are plenty of ways to watch these games on a variety of media, and a plethora of options for watching individual player highlights. This is primarily for people who watch or are able to watch full games, but it also works just as effectively for match highlights. Be wary of individual player highlights as by definition, they will show the good rather than the bad and it is harder to form a balanced judgement - although they can still be very useful. So today, rather do a player summary based on players and teams I've seen play, I hope the following guide will be useful for those wanting to make their own minds up.

The most important, and perhaps obvious point: don't separate a player from the context in which he performs. It is the sum of his own ability, combined with his own team, against the effects of the opposition within the surrounding environment. If you base your analysis of a player on all this, you will have a firm foundation to judge how he may perform in the Premier League. It is the whole, combined product that is important, within their role in a team.

    1. Ability : Physical

You are looking for speed, power, acceleration and strength. Are they shrugged off the ball easily? Do they get away from defenders quickly to gain a yard or ten? How tall are they? How well can they jump? How many aerial duels do they win? How heavy are they - if the data is available? Are they resilient to injuries? Do they have the stamina to continue playing game after game throughout a season, or do they struggle 70 minutes into a game?

    Ability : Mental

Do they remain focused, or do they have lapses of concentration? Do they have a good attitude, or do they argue with their team mates? Do they anticipate passes - misplaced from their opposition, or from their own team? Are they able to control space - moving in and creating space for themselves and others, and restricting it for their opposition? This is perhaps the hardest to analyse - but a very rudimentary way of assessing this would be to see if they - as the cliche goes - seem to be in the right place at the right time. This isn't blind luck and a hugely important part of analysing any player. Are they disciplined, or do they pick up bookings regularly? Have there even been issues regarding missing training and being fined? Are they consistent or do they work in patches?

Are the composed in front of goal? How well do they spring the offside trap? If a player has a lot of near misses, chances are he won't suddenly embark on a goal scoring spree. Inversely, the players that do seem to be 'lucky' are rarely so, rely on their reading of the game and their composure. Do they have a preference for passing or shooting? Will they have a tendency for the spectacular, or the ambitious, or do they adopt a more conservative, safety first approach?

    Ability: Technical

How do they pass the ball? How do they receive passes? How often do they misplace passes - and are there statistics backing this up? Can they use both feet, and how often? How do they dribble - and do they sacrifice speed for a closer control of the ball? If you have the statistics, check for dribbles attempted and amount of times dispossessed.

Important factors are their stances when receiving the ball, as it gives a good indication of their skills in anticipating and reading the game? Do they prefer to accelerate away and go on a run? Do they prefer short simple safe passes? Do they use their first touch well to get themselves and the ball immediately into space? Are they already aware of their next pass, or do they dwell on the ball? Do they get tackled a lot? Do they tend to power headers or place them? Similarly with shots - how do they strike the ball? Side foot, or laces?

What set pieces do they take, and how do they take them? Do they have a monopoly within their team?

The above gives a good indication of how good a player is, but without context, it can become meaningless. So we need to consider their own team

Their own team: Position, Formation and Team Work

Very obvious, but where do they play? And in what formation? Are they behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1? A winger in a 4-3-3? Or perhaps one of an interchangeable trio in a 4-2-3-1? Are they versatile? Each position has a different set of responsibilities, that can sometimes vary quite subtly. Check heatmaps if available, although by watching the game you should be able to tell quite quickly. A look at the manager will often tell you what their preferences are too. See how often they've been rotated, and whether they tend to be played in different positions. How do they react to being dropped, or being shifted to another role?

Crucially, who is around the players? For example, a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1 with three excellent passers behind him may have a tendency to wait for passes and be a predatory finisher. Conversely in other systems, with more combative and less technically adept players in the middle of the park, the forward may be expected to drop in deeper and become involved in build up play. Is the player used to doing a lot of work for himself, or has he expected those around him to play in a certain way, and to a certain standard?

How much offensive or defensive work are players expected to do? Check the stats if available for blocks and interceptions for the player you're looking at. Does the team favour high pressure, high up the pitch? Do the attackers force defenders into misplacing passes? Do they tend to sit back and counter with fast wingers and accurate passing? Do they tend to favour a possession based approach?

How does the player get on with his own team mates, on and off the pitch? Do they maintain discipline? Do they have a good relationship with their manager? The fans? Much like job-hunters with suspiciously long CV's - do they have a tendency to move around a lot? And for what reason? Better money, better first team opportunities, or falling out with their team mates or staff?

How does the manager interact with the player? Is he a disciplinarian? Does he show favouritism or indulge players? Does he tend to stick to one formation?

    The Opposition:

In any game you are watching, always consider the quality of their opposition. How highly are they ranked? What formation are they playing, and are they at home or away? Have they taken special measures to combat the effects of any player - including the ones that your are observing? You need to look at the opposition much like you look at the players own team, as above.

    The Environment

    League:

The competitiveness of the league will have a huge impact. What league is it? How successful have teams from these leagues been in their respective confederations' and regions' tournaments? Is there a prevailing style or philosophy in the league?

    Country:

What is the weather like, and does it mean the player is used to certain conditions for most of the year? Do they have to deal with extremes of weather?

    Culture:

Are there any language issues - do most people on the team speak a similar language? Religion - do they fast, or do they have certain religious beliefs that may at times have an impact on what they do on and off the pitch? Again, different countries have very different ideas on what is considered liberal or conservative. Players can lead very different lives off the pitch, and as banal as it sounds, its worth knowing if they spend their free time in clubs, or at home reading. Whether they have families, or prefer to shop around.

    The New Team, League, Country

Armed with all of the above, you can compare where they're coming from to where they're arriving. How much will all those things you've looked into change when they move? What is most likely to change? Is a card magnet going to get even less disciplined when he's under pressure as a new signing? Will a poacher be expected to do more defensive work? Will a a star player in his previous team struggle to be part of a rotating set up? A player is unlikely to spontaneously lose three inches in height or lose ten yards of pace. However even those most technically adept player may misplace passes when suddenly in a new team where noone speaks the language and with no time to gel. Conversely a composed finisher with a good mentality may carry on exactly where he left off, scoring goals with the stubborn, ruthless efficiency that got him signed in the first place.

This might seem like an inordinate amount of detail, and if you've got this far, well done. You're at the end. Some of the above might sound obvious, but it is very very easy to judge a player on a few select abilities, and assuming he will either be a success or a failure when he arrives at a new league. Some factors will be irrelevant, but it's best to be aware. Height may seem irrelevant for a diminutive playmaker - and often is - but if he is suddenly to be buffeted by 6ft5 giants at a rain soaked ground for half the year, it is worth keeping in mind.

Once you've considered the whole picture, it makes the judgement a little bit fairer when you try and predict how a player will do within a new team, in a new league, in a new environment.

Making decision on the 3 forwards is the biggest challenge in this season for me so far.
Chelsea, City and Arsenal do not have the definite starter/top scorer like RVP and it makes the whole game more complex than usual where you can just pick the top scorer from the top teams.

I am interesting to know, especially to those who doesn't own RVP, who are your 3 forwards?

    Repost.

Aup chaps, question unrelated to FPL coming up if anyone is able and kind enough to offer advice.

I am thinking about doing a HND Computing & Systems Development course at college and wanted to know if anyone here had any experience of doing a similar type of course and what, if any, career prospects I would have should I complete this course and try and get a job.

    Many thanks.

How much work experience do you get on the course? What are the employability statistics for it?

Speak to the college and see if you can get a breakdown of leavers' destinations, and how many were employed in a relevant field.

A good course provider, who can deliver good training and education is essential. As is your ability (perhaps independently) to secure relevant work-experience for yourself so that on completion of your course you are as attractive to potential employers as possible.

      Best of luck.

I did a HND in computing and I had an option to move into Degree after second year (I decided against this as I found a decent job at end of the course). It is generally the same as the degree for the first two years, or at least it was 10 years ago.

I am now an Infrastructure Manager so it did me no harm 🙂

Repost - on previous page mate

        Jayden...

I've got a similar HND in Computing and Telecoms - really good course - quite intensive though as HND's have continual assessments as opposed to a Degree....which would be slightly more academic I suppose.

Depends what you want to do going forward really - as your course sounds like it covers a broad range there. So theyre maybe quite a lot of choices available to you depending on where you eventually specialise???

Web site Dessign, Software Design, System Design, Analyst, DBA, Testing would be I guess the first likely choice where you want to develop and go from there. I choose the Telecoms route - so a slightly different approach - but many of mates from the same course choose the software route and they probably over the years have had more choice whereas in telecoms is probably been a little more boxed.

The choice is yours - enjoy oyur student years my friend - they will be the best in your life!!!

My student years were great back in the day when I was doing my degree. I want to retrain and need to find out as much as I can about this course so I don't waste my time again by picking something that won't give me any career prospects when I complete it.

My advice would certainly be to look for a "sandwich" type course where you get guaranteed work experience. That will tell you whether you're suited for that career and also give you useful experience to put on your CV. It also might give you a toe hold into a job with your employers. Good luck!

    Anelka – Steel or China?

Straight into my draft#1 team where also Bale featured, but later, in an rvp and baleless team, there was always money enough for 3 higher priced, younger, more exciting strikers who have never experienced goalless streeks in china. But as the goals keep rollin for a fit looking nicolas in pre-season, and the whole idea in this game is hunting value for money and points per million, I am not sure anymore how wise it is to overlook him? What are your thoughts?

      OK.

I don't like the Mignolet thing.
Your back line needs work, particularly Amoeba, who appears to be a shower of red cards.
I don't like Snodgrass or Kim.
Forwards are lovely. I have Weimann ...

mignolet is great value and i think harper will get a game for hull when error prone mcgregor gets found out

my backline is all due to be rotated [amo has good fixtures when the other go worse]

snodgrass is my punt but i have been looking at sissoko and others , kim i may change to redmond if i get rid of snody

        yes they lovely

Ahhh for cleansheets yes, City third Arsenal fith

It's misleading going by overall, Arsenal second, City sixth

Although saving that 0.5 can be crucial

So my lovely girlfriend just registered for FPL, and she put her team together based entirely on the attractiveness of players. Would appreciate any advice for this world-first RMG'sT (Rate my girlfriend's team)!

    Begovic (Gazz)

    Johnson, Kompany, Baker (Figueroa,McNaughton)

    Mata, Walcott, Navas, Ramsey (Morrison)

    Hernandez, RVW, Giroud

    Cheers!

Well balanced team, no outright bad picks.

Maybe save 0.5 by swiching Rat to Collins although you could argue Rat is *supposedly* absolutely nailed at LB whereas Tomkins is lurking at the CB position
      .
If I had Mignolet personally I'd just go with a 4.0 keeper, I don't feel Southampton will perform defensively and even when Mig faces the top 6 I doubt Boruc will come in and give you a cleanie.

This is £ saving tactics with arguably more risk though so if you're happy with your team and dont need extra £ then its good as it is
