On the eve of the new season, we roll our second analysis article on the Sky Sports game. After previously examining formations, we now turn our attention towards the Man of the Match (MOTM) recipients.

The MOTM award is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet – and warrants some attention when selecting our lineup. As the MOTM is given out by the Sky match reporter, and can often differ from the televised award, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets. Using last season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Most Awards Per Club

Firstly let’s take a look at the players who hogged the limelight and achieved the most Man of the Match awards for their respective clubs.

There are a number of significant points to note from our table:

  • There’s no sign of Robin Van Persie, who collected a paltry four MOTM awards in spite of his goalscoring heroics for United. So, while we can perhaps rely upon the Dutchman for goals, we shouldn’t expect a haul of supplementary points.
  • Man City seem to be the only team in the top seven without a stand-out performer; David Silva fared best with four MOTM awards.
  • Midfielders earned the most MOTM awards for five of the top six teams, highlighting that a midfielder who plies his trade for a side that generally tends to dominate matches, is most likely to receive the award.
  • In the bottom 11 teams, there were only two midfielders who claimed the most MOTM awards for their respective sides, highlighting that a defender or striker seems more likely to receive the award for a “lesser team”.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s now follow that up by taking a look at the players who gained five or more MOTM awards last season.

NameStartsMOTM Starts – MOTM %
Santi Cazorla371027%
Luis Suarez331030%
Wayne Rooney221045%
Gareth Bale33927%
Robert Snodgrass35925%
Ashley Williams37821%
Juan Mata31619%
Marouane Fellaini31619%
Frank Lampard21628%
Dimitar Berbatov32618%
Romelu Lukaku20630%
Ryan Shawcross37513%
James Collins29517%
Eden Hazard31516%
Steven Pienaar35514%

Most of the names in this table won’t come as a surprise due to their performances and accumulated points in 2012/13. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting points, however:

  • Wayne Rooney achieved MOTM in a massive 45% of his games started.
  • Robert Snodgrass and Ashley Williams achieved a surprisingly large amount of MOTM awards.
  • With the futures of Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale uncertain, Santi Cazorla appears the stand-out ‘big hitter’ option once again.
  • Chelsea had three players with five or more MOTM awards apiece. Factor in the return of Romelu Lukaku and the potential signing of Rooney and it’s fair to say the awards could be spread even more evenly amongst Jose Mourinho’s side.

Awards By Position

Lastly we will take a look at which positions received the MOTM award the most times (excluding the relegated teams).

PositionTotal MOTM awards% of total MOTM
Goalkeeper154%
Defender7522%
Midfielder15747%
Forward8425%

These stats help to back up our previous article on formations, showing that once again midfielders come out on top. There is very little between forwards and defenders, whilst goalkeepers were rarely awarded MOTM awards.

Looking Forward

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”. However, combined with passing and tackling bonus, the chances of earning these awards can certainly help settle some internal struggles we may have when choosing between two players.

For example, in the contest of Santi Cazorla vs Theo Walcott, there is simply no comparison. Both produced 12 assists, while Walcott scored 14 goals to Cazorla’s 12, however, after factoring in the MOTM awards and bonus, Walcott finished on a total points haul of 174 (admittedly with less games) whilst Cazorla scored 262 points, 50 of which were from MOTM awards.

As for this season, we can expect similar trends to last. Expensive midfielders who play in “the hole” or advanced positions from the top teams should regularly receive MOTM gongs. For the lesser sides, their dominant defenders and match winning strikers will earn the plaudits. However, with an influx of some new big name forwards, we can perhaps expect that the frontmen to achieve a higher percentage of MOTM awards this time around.

This Season’s Benefactors

While we can anticipate that the patterns of awards may be similar, there are an array of players who could well emerge as stronger candidates this term.

If, as expected, David Silva is handed a regular role, and Man City’s new quartet of forwards start firing, we can anticipate the Spaniard to receive a lot more MOTM awards, in a similar vein to Cazorla for the Gunners. The possibility of Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho supporting the Liverpool attack should also see him established as a favourite – particularly if Luis Suarez is out of the picture at Anfield. Finally, on the other side of Merseyside, Kevin Mirallas is widely expected to play in an advanced position on the right of the Everton front three and could well make a dent in the awards handed to a deep-lying Marouane Fellaini.

Not far from my team. I like the way you think.
I went for Yanga-Mbiwa for newcastle D. 3 nice home fixtures from weeks 2-5, but you knew that.
Dzeko is asking for trouble. But if you think of him as a ahort term investment, it should be okay.

        🙂
I toyed with Yanga-Mbiwa and Taylor so I could get M Turner instead of Chester (theres a typo above, I actually have Chester, 0.5 short to afford Turner) but I wasnt sure who would start with Coloccini so I went with Santon as he seems nailed on at LB...

Agreed on Dzeko too, he's a punt for Citys nice fixtures but once he gets rotated its bye bye and Bent in I reckon.

Thanks for the reply and all the best tomorrow

I'm not sold on Dzeko personally, and also reckon Toure will not be first choice come the end of the transfer window. Beyond that I like it.

Cheers mate, youre welcome! I agree on Dzeko, am hoping he'll do the business and at least start 2 of the first 3 games. Will almost certainly swap him for Bent once hes getting rotated.
A brace V newcastle would be nice tho 🙂

Dear EVERYONE of FFS.......as far as I am aware NONE of us are Premier League managers, I don't even think that too many of us are wives/lovers/friends/colleagues or even associates of said managers and until you start believing in crystal balls please stop asking any of us to read minds or look into the future.

Mr John Terry most likely at this point does not himself know how many minutes of football he is going to play in the next week and so if you have an opinion of the matter......then just roll with it and no one else's opinion is any more or less valid than your own.

Yes there is a wealth of fantasy knowledge on this site but respect and appreciate how you can actually harness it or else just become the excluded masses who will not attract attention once you gain a relevant and/or potentially answerable question 🙂

TBF, It's sort of what the site is here for, particularly for people new to FF playing.

It would be nice if everyone read a few of the articles and links above first which could answer many of the repeat questions
Or read the previous page or two of posts and the answers to similar questions.

Surely Benteke will outscore Soldado over the 2 games despite the difficult fixtures? I think Spurs will be slow out the gate without Bale and even if Soldado scores he could be on 6-9 points. Benteke should get 4 just for appearances alone, Or is it the hassle of having to get him out after?

The latter mostly although I don't fancy Tekkers to outscore Soldado this week personally.

Mirallas. As a Liverpool supporter I can tell you Downer is the most miserable FPL potential in the premier league.

I've settled on this for GW1.

    Mignolet - 4m
    Kosc - Toure - Coleman - (Burner - Chester)
    Wally - Haz (C) - Mirallas - Oscar - (Kim)
    Lukaku - Sturridge - Dzeko

    2.5m banked

    GW2 or 3 Oscar --> 6m
    GW2 or 3 Lukaku --> Bent
    GW4 Dzeko --> RVP

Proven Premier League goal scorer over an unproven Championship striker.

I mean come on look at the stats. He cost Villa 18m rising to 24m.

        2001–2005 Ipswich Town 122 (48)
        2005–2007 Charlton Athletic 68 (31)
        2007–2009 Tottenham Hotspur 60 (18)
        2009–2011 Sunderland 58 (32)
        2011– Aston Villa 54 (21)

Really don't understand the logic that Turner is going to start ahead of club captain and player of the year Hudson?

Furthermore Brayford, an expensive summer signing, the only natural right back in the squad, and too old to be merely signed for 'potential' is going to sit on the bench...

I've gotta make the call to go with FFS heresay or my own logic, and whichever I go with is certain to be wrong...

Yeah I don't understand the reasoning around Turner starting ahead of Hudson.

I'm going to keep Brayford onthe bench. He is 3rd on the bench anyway so hopefully he will get a nailed on place a few GW's in

Fan forums talking about it. The left foot, right foot combination at CB and Turners height seem to be primary factors. I still reckon there will be rotation though.

Hey guys! I have finally decided my starting 11.

    Please rate!

    Mignolet (Davis)

Toure // mertesaker // lescott (Whittaker + baker)

    Silva // Oscar // hazard // Walcott

    Bony // Lukaku // Soldado

Reasoning: silva - most likely to play 90 mins.
Bony over Dzeko due to play time

    What do ya think guys?

You have the same front 3 as me, so obviously I like this! Soldado and Bony are nailed on, with Lukaku a great option to pick points up starting a game and coming off the bench in the other. You could always go to a safer option after Lukaku's GW, like Lambert. Good stuff and good luck!

Your mid is too weak, compare it to most RMT's with Theo, Coutinho, Haz and Mirallis your gonna struggling, cheap defenders will earn as much as dear ones at this time of the year, as Kompany said last season we're not too worried about keeping clean sheets in Sept or Oct, its from Jan on when things get tight is when we keep teams out....
