Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I believe the only reason Aguero was withdrawn was, with the game all but done, Pellegrini took the chance to rest him up considering his considerable lack of pre-season fitness. He may not get 90 next game, but he looks set to start and thus be a major captaincy option.

Di Maria I could see. But would Madrid let another striker go before they get one in (if they even get one in at all)? I think that would leave them with Morata (sp?) and a rejected bid for Suarez.

I'm not as against point hits as most people here (although I will try not to go crazy with them like I did in my first season). My thought is if it makes your team better long term AND has at least what you consider a 50/50 chance of paying off in the week ahead, go for it.

I can justify my hit quite easily cos I have Lukaku (likely 1pt), R Morrison (0/1pt) and then I'm in to my 4.0mil DFers. Getting Aguero for a 4pter gives me much more potential next week

In very basic terms I'd say I often base it (amongst countless other variables) on the following:

      1. Player imminently becoming unavailable to me due to price rises or falls.
      2. Double GWs -> 4 point hits often become only (at least) 2 point hits. Although doing them after the double pains me, feels more like trying to get out of debt than investing as it were.
      3. Not being able to field 11 (or at least a good 10).
      4. Freeing up cash for other moves, although unless another of the above points is in contention this is usually done without hits.
      5. How early in the season it is. By this I mean, a GW2 hit gives you a lot longer for that player to repay you than a GW32 hit. And early hits can often crow-bar you into a commanding early position in your league given the right calls. It's easier to maintain a lead than chase one.
      6. And finally, linked to point 5, my position in the mini-league. I don't want to be taking hits when the title is separated by single figure points.

      (7. Post GW-hit, if the player I brought in for the hit outscores the one leaving by 4 or more I consider it a success. You know, ignoring all the others that didn't come off.......)

And an overriding factor is often that player's position; as is regularly said on here, points hits for defenders or goalkeepers rarely prove worth it.

After thought - as much as people often spend points trying to chase previous high scorers or players with promising fixtures, in my experience the success rate (i.e. above point 7) in this case is at best 50%. Perhaps putting punts aside, trust your current players, you brought them in for a reason.

All that said, a good points hit can be the catalyst for a great GW, and season, score. But picking them is the tricky part. And only very few people get more right than wrong. I don't think I've ever seen someone win FPL with a 4 point hit every week!

I'll stop replying to myself now!

I think Ivanovic might have his place taken off him by Azpilicueta for the United game. Mourinho's post match comments tonight hinted he nearly gave Apzi the start but opted for Ivanovic's physical presence against Benteke; United don't have a Benteke - I can see Azpilicueta getting his start.

Lukaku must be due a start too, he ripped the same United defence up a few months ago, and in what Mourinho has said is a three-way rotating striker spot, Lukaku is the one without a start so far.

So with that in mind, Ivanovic to Zaba or Vertonghen.

ok, we're into the small hours and my small, tired brain needs help to solve the Lukaku quandry before price change.

Can you help distill my thinking please? What'd you do in my position?

    Current attack:

    Wally, Cout, Mirallas, Haz, Grandin

    Soldado, Lambo, Lukaku

    Options for replacing Lukaku:
    Sturridge, Dzeko, Giroud

Given that I already have Cout for pool cover, Wally for arse cover, does that leave Dzeko as the best option as it covers me for city too? does city cover outweigh his rotation risk?

    cheers

you convince me the most (plus, i was leaning towards dzeko anyway). nice one! sometimes in fpl, youve just got to go with your will right and i wont regret it, because it's what i wanted!

thanks for the advice guys! this season's is up and running for me, in terms of transfers at least.

i must also note that i plan to get RVP in for Dzeko GW4, so the Dzeko punt will be voluntarily cut short anyway, not just cut short because it didnt work out

it's a done deal! and if i put the (C) on him right up until 11.29 saturday before changing it to someone else then he'll definitely score goals!

Anyone's opinion on Lukaku & Mirallas for Aguero and 4.5 Mid.

    Team would be

Silva, Walcott, Hazard, Koren, 4.5 mid
    Aguero, Benteke, Soldado

Moving Kevin Mirallas on after 1 game?

Ridiculous if you ask me. He will score very well this season. I'll stick my neck on the line and say top 5 points scoring midfielder by the end of the season. Top player. Looked good in preseason. Looked OK in the first game of the season.

Be patient mate! How about Sturridge instead of Aguero? You have Silva....

I'd hold onto Mirallas for now, a 7.5m goal-scoring mid sometimes pretending to be a striker sounds good to me. He didn't score this week sure, but neither did plenty of others that have done it before and will do it again (cough Michu cough). Sturridge could be your man, if that fits your budget.

Which midfielder should I get for 6.5m??

    Currently thinking Snodgrass.

But, will he fall in price soon or will his yellow flag dissapear?

He should be playing this week and he is the best player for that amount if you could get 7m then go for Nolan as he will do you well

Do any of you think there are better options to replace Ivanovic (to free up money for Lukaku > Soldado) than Lescott?

How many gameweeks will he play?
How long is Kompany out for and how long until Nastasic is back?

depends if you are set on a city defender or not. If yes then he is good option, if not i quite fancy Lovren, seems like a player who could rack up bonus points to me and is pretty decent threat at set plays

    a) A bit off topic but getting my gcse results today. Just wanted to ask whether people think doing Maths, Accounting, Computing and Economics in college is a good choice?

    b) Seems like Arsenal are teasing their fans again with big names. Not happening imho.

    c) I hate Mourinho. Now I need to take Lukaku out earlier than I intended to. Dzeko it is, although I want Sturridge 🙁

Maths, Economics and Computing are great choices. I'm not sure how favourably Accounting is looked at for A-level.

Good luck, them picks depend entirely on what you want to do when you're older, however I'd be wary of Accountancy as apparently it can be hard transitioning from A-Level to University level as they can teach you in completely different styles or something, some people claim it can be a hindrance, although I'm quite clearly not speaking from experience!

    From the rules;

    "Rebounds
If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded."

That means Dzeko should have a assist from Silvas goal right?
