The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Morning, people.

    Cech Marshall
    Toure Lescott Clyne Murner Chester
    Hazard Walcott NOlan Mirallas Kim
    Sturridge Dzeko Lukaku

With 2.5m itb, which is the best transfer?

    A. Lukaku > Soldado
    B. Cech & Lukaku > Migs & Kun (-4; triple LIV & MCI)
    C. Hazard & Lukaku > J.Cole/Jarvis & RVP (-4; double WHU attack)
    D. save FT

I would probably go with A. You can survive GW3 without getting rid of Hazard or Cech if you want to keep them long term. You may want to consider Lukaku > Soldado now and Cech > Migs next GW to avoid the hit.

          Not a problem

I think Cech > Migs is a sideways move considering both have tough fixtures (purely based on Benteke's goal scoring form)

I'd go A as I think Soldado could do well and, as a no-nonsense, nailed-on goalscorer, should make a good fantasy player.

If you were to take a hit, I'd be looking to get in RVP. Soldado could out-perform him over the next few weeks though.

Chelsea play Utd on 26 Aug, then the blank week and international break mean they don't play again til 14 Sep. That's nearly 3 weeks of Chelsea prices dropping if they don't beat Utd.

No one is born with football talent and players develop very differently. Half the reason he's so effective is his physical stature and at 20 he's just reaching his peak. As he becomes more intelligent and aware his body will slow down a bit too

Just thoguht I'd share from my new blog:

To WC or not to WC?
( may as well keep with the Shakespeare theme)

This is a short article on my philosophies concerning the elusive, or not-so-elusive for some, wild card that seems to dominating recent discussions on the EPL Renegades facebook page. And for good reason really, it’s always a hot topic and one that should be given deep thought before using. I will delve into reason as to why it should be used and reasons why it shouldn’t be used.

Why and when it shouldn’t be used:

    1. When 2-3 three of your big hitters don’t return: this GW some big hitters that we all expected to come away from their games with point simply didn’t. The key here is patience and don’t knee jerk. Players like Coutinho, Mirallas and Walcott didn’t get the returns we all craved. If you have a quick look at the stats and engage in some personal analysis, you will realise that these players are likely to return in the next few weeks with their kind fixtures.

    2. When the market is not volatile: Playing the prices in FPL is just like the stock market. The more managers trade a player out/in, the quicker their prices will decrease/ increase. This first GW has not been a volatile one. Meaning prices are not fluctuating like they will in the next few weeks in my opinion when ‘value’ players begin getting returns and begin turning into ‘bandwagons’. I have seen people talking about the winner of last season using his WC before GW2 but the difference between this season and last season is that the market in GW1 last season was very volatile. We had managers scrambling to get players in like Hazard and Michu. We don’t have such circumstances like that this time. If you go to this website, you start to get some idea of what I am talking about: http://totalfpl.com. Michu and Hazard’s prices rose by 0.3 in the first week. No players have risen past 0.2 yet this GW and none will by the beginning of the next. So far only Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw have risen by 0.1. Coleman needs another 56% of his cut-off to rise another 0.1, thus pocketing 0.1 yourself. Coleman will be lucky to pocket this for you. Barkley needs another 25% or so to rise 0.2 for the week thus you pocket 0.1 for the week. Barkley might get increase your team value by 0.1, but there is question of whether he will retain his spot once Gibson. I wont even ask if this is worth a WC.This is not a volatile game week so I suggest you don’t use your WC yet for these reasons. I’m not suggesting you don’t use your wildcard at all; there are other reasons you might. But if you have used your wildcard to ‘make money’ already, then you have made a big mistake.

Agree with you, especially on point 2.

I myself *have* used my wildcard this week, and whilst I am obviously paying attention to price rises and falls whilst on wildcard (I'd be silly not to) my reasons were these:

I built a team for GW1, the plan being to wildcard now in order to build a longer term team. It also gives me a slight advantage in the early days of my mini leagues, I've had a chance to look at my opponents' teams and analyse what they've gone for. Wildcarding now means I can steal a march on them selection wise, assuming that they don't themselves wildcard (and knowing them it seems very unlikely). And finally, I've never wildcarded in week one before, purely seeing if it helps or hinders my season interests me!

In my experience, I had a mate who is a very competitive person and loaded up his team completely with 6 DGW-ers (Chelsea and Reading) last season in hopes that he would have that edge to lead still in the early days. Unfortunately, someone else rode up the table and overtook him by February.

I think it's an unnecessary risk and a few hits would fix.

Agree. Those who did the pre-planned gw1-2 wildcard are probably kicking themselves because they are not going to get any substantial increase in their team value.
But it's impossible to predict exactly what weeks will have a lot of transfer activity. People mention the international break after gw3, but it's not guaranteed to have more activity than other weeks.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening or whatever it is where you are.

    Quick question:

Was I stone mad to offload Lukaku & Hazard for Miralles & Aguero.
My front 7 now look like this....

    Wally/Miralles/Oscar/Silva
    Aguero/Soldado/Dzeko

Seems like too much City but Aguero is just a two week punt considering the games City have and then it's on to RvP.

Thoughts on my madness? Ps had 90 points so thought the 4 point hit was justifiable 😉

Looks like you have a plan. If you are going for RvP then i guess you have to do what you have to (if not using WC) to get him. Personally, I'm not going to look at RvP all season, I believe i can find enough points elsewhere to make up for Mr. Persie....best of luck 🙂

I think after those two transfers I will manage to get him without WC. Keeping WC for a proper emergency this year. But ya I can see there is definitely a case for going without and I may even reassess once I see Aguero's performances. Good luck with your team.

Since it looks like Torres is going to start against United and a blank GW3, he will probably drop and fast. I traded him out today and wont consider him until he is more nailed on.

Just took a punt on Hoolahan to drop Tonev before he drops (I'm sure many people punted on him as i did for DGW) Hull away seems a descent game and seeing as Hooper is still out and Snoddy most likely back.....I got a tingle and pulled the trigger. Also leaves me with 1.5 in the bank with Soldado, Giroud, Sturridge up top, descent midfield and due to the BPS system favoring defenders in GW1.....I like it.....78pts GW1 and feeling B-)

Yea I took on Tonev as will. Silly thinking back. His brief appearance tonight cost me 6 points from Collins on the bench.

Still looking for that cheap 5.0 bench Mid though. Tonev might come good, but not for a while I reckon.

Why and when it should be used:

    1. When the market is volatile: you will know when it is volatile. When players like Coutinho, Walcott and RVP all score hattricks in one GW (or something to that effect then it is volatile) and 10,000 managers trade these players in in the first 2 hours each, then that is a volatile player market and that is when it would be a nice idea to WC. If you just follow totalfpl.com or fiso.co.uk, you will get a feel for the market and when it is best to be used. There is definitely a craft (I don’t use the word ‘art’ in these instances) to it. Familiarise yourself with the literature and you will eventually get a feel for the market and when it is best time to use the WC.

    2. When there is a double gameweek: If you have wildcarded to get rid of your DGW players before the GW3 blank then I guess I can forgive you. But if you were smart, you would know only 4 DGW players would have been viable (3 chelsea and Benteke) thus the WC would not be needed to offload these players. Careful planning is all you would need maybe a hit or two. But yes, saving your WC for a DGW later on in the season is a very intelligent thing to do. As with most seasons, DGW’s present themselves later on in the season due to reshuffling of fixtures due to European commitments. It happened last season and WC’s decided mini leagues and overall rankings for some.

    3. Before International Breaks where teams have the weekend off: This is probably the time to use it if you intend on using it early on in the season. If you can time this with RVP in before GW4 and the closing of the transfer window you are laughing. Between GW’s 3 and 4, there is an International Break where you will get two weeks to ‘play the market’. You can get those players in just before they increase and pray they increase by 0.2 and sell them for someone else. I have had success with these international breaks past, but I have also experienced failures.

    4. Once the transfer window has closed: The transfer window closes on 31st August. WCing after the window closes gives you some scope to analyse signings make the adjustments required to accommodate those signings, fixtures and form of the players. WCing in GW1 seriously hinders the potential if you getting on these last minute signings. There are still big hitter clubs looking to sign players (Arsenal for one). Waiting to WC between GW3 and 4 looks ideal.

    5. If you’re team is completely crocked: If you had Koscielny, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlein, Steklenberg, Szczesny, Lukaku, Jovetic, Kompany and Steve Taylor then WCing now would be a wise move.

Conclusion: if you are hell bent on using it early, do it after GW3 and before GW4 to beat the transfer window and scope signings, play the market in the international game week and to get RVP for Crystal Palace and Man United’s subsequent good fixtures. Or save it for a future double GW.

Ward > Reid > Toure for me.

Stoke will be toothless when Mark Huges decided to play the ball on ground this season. I think any team can steal a CS from them. WHM's backline is organized but I don't see any of them can shut down NBA in this match. Toure just looks good on paper (play for Liverpool) but bear in mind how good the Villa's front three are!

    Ahoy hoy deadzoners...

I was "forced" into a transfer earlier tonight by Lukaku's drop and the fact that I went out... wanted Soldado in for Lukaku with no funds so I relatively impulsively went Ivan to Hangeland to fund it... kind of hopeful about it actually. Baps seem to like central defenders, and I like their run of fixtures.

    Here's to hoping

None of them, but Briggs has a higher chance if Richardson sits out for long and Jol prefers Briggs over Riise (I rate a 50% chance on this). For Chambers, Clyne is way ahead of the pecking order and he looks so close to feature this or next GW

Already transfered Lukaku out to the Wolf (every little .1 million helps at this stage) but is it worth replacing Ivanovic for Zabeleta and taking a 4 point hit. Nailed on for once, and the schedule is too good to miss?

I think it's a good move you've done there. I was similar...Ivan to Zab and Lukaku to Dzeko.

Over the next 2 weeks you can't deny City's fixtures. In a similar sense I think RVW is intriguing and am just monitoring to go Dzeko to RVW (or Bony) here soon.

Though I don't think it's worth taking a hit. Ivan could easily score against Utd. Even if he doesn't he'll get you 2 pts.

And if you do the transfer you lose 4pts without the guarantee of a CS.
