Our weekly look at some overlooked Fantasy alternatives arrives for your perusal this morning. As always, we highlight a trio of protagonists with some favourable fixtures on their respective agendas in the Gameweek ahead.

Nikica Jelavic

Having taken the Premier League by storm during the latter half of 2011/12, the Everton forward struggled in his first full season on Merseyside last time out. Jelavic notched just seven times over David Moyes’ final year at the Goodison helm and with new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez snapping up Arouna Kone from former club Wigan, it seemed the Croatian would be edged out of the picture.

Jelavic has risen to the challenge, though, and over the summer returned to the form of old, notching four of his side’s 12 goals across the pre-season fixtures. With Martinez’ possession-based game affording Everton an extra attacking edge, the former Glasgow Rangers star is benefitting from the move to a 4-3-3, with Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar offering support on either side; no longer is he reliant on knock-downs from the aerial threat of Marouane Fellaini.

Coming in at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Jelavic has remained an under the radar option ahead of this morning’s Fantasy deadline. Just over 2% of managers have acquired his services thus far but with his confidence restored, the Croatian has a home clash with West Brom and trip to Cardiff look enticing opportunities for Fantasy points.

Peter Crouch

After a narrow defeat at Liverpool last time out, Mark Hughes’ home debut in charge of Stoke sees Crystal Palace pay visit later this afternoon. The Potters’ following three fixtures (whm, MCI ars) could well see them toil, making a victory against Ian Holloway’s men all the more essential at the Britannia.

With Hughes’ men set to go on the offensive against the Eagles, then, Crouch, as the lone target man in a 4-4-1-1 set-up, could be an unlikely Fantasy ally over the weekend. Hughes may be looking to implement a more possession-based approach but Crouch’s aerial threat may well prove the visitors’ undoing, with crosses aplenty expected from the likes of Matt Etherington out on the left. Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with an ownership under the 4% mark, he may appeal to owners of Nicolas Anelka or Romelu Lukaku looking for a short-term gamble.

Tomas Rosicky

An injury to Mikel Arteta keep the Czech midfielder in the first-team frame at Arsenal right now. With Jack Wilshere slotting in alongside Aaron Ramey in the double-pivot as a result of the Spaniard’s absence, Rosicky has started both of Arsenal’s fixtures in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud and looks set to get the nod ahead for today’s lunchtime trip to Fulham.

A convincing midweek win away to Fenerbahce silenced the doubters and handed the Gunners a real confidence boost as they roll up to the Cottage. Martin Jol’s men may have scraped a victory at Sunderland but the Black Cats had 20+ attempts on goal at the Stadium of Light and with injury depriving the hosts of half their first-choice back-four (Kieran Richardson and Fernando Amorebieta) and keeper, Maarten Stekelenburg, Wenger’s side will be buoyed heading into this one.

At just 5.5 in FPL, with a 1.1% ownership, Rosicky is a short-term, under the radar option as Wenger’s side look to build on Wednesday’s morale-boosting victory in Turkey.

I've picked Mirallas because WBA didn't impress me on Saturday. Mirallas was unlucky not to get something out of his match.

I also rate the Swansea defence, despite last week's result. Tottenham will struggle to score against them.

    Rate My Team review.

So for those of you who haven't paid for membership - perhaps this post will help you decide to buy, or make you glad you didn't. Similarly for those that have paid - this could help you assess how much faith you should put in the RMT data.

So last week I started building a team based purely on RMT data - no human interventions, just pure numbers. I went with the all-out GW1 strat as I wanted to work with as much known data as possible (specifically the DGW). So the selected team last week was:

    Guzan (4)
    Ivanovic/Jose Enrique/Johnson (4+4)
    Mata/Walcott/Santi/Hazard(c) (4.5)
    Anelka/Benteke/Weimann

The subs didn't matter as they weren't expected to play anyway and I selected the highest expected GW1 score amongst them.

The team got 79 points - above average, but a bit away from the top.

In hindsight there are few things we can say about the team, but the clear mistakes were Mata and Santi - both were expensive mids that flopped, and human intervention could probably have cleared them due to the Spanish international.

Guzan scored a bit lower than expected, but I don't think anyone could honestly say that for 5m or less they would've picked McGregor, Stekelenburg or Boruc to outscore him.

RMT did well on defence - picking the top scoring defender and collecting 2 CS's and 2 BP's from the 2 Liverpool defenders. Coleman I don't think anyone with a 1 week view would've picked.

Midfield was a disaster. I think there were a few solid picks that were missed, Nolan and Oscar being the most notable. Silva at home was also a big one. Getting these over Mata/Santi would've given space to improve Anelka - most likely to Lambert/Lukaku (or Weimann to Agbonlahor). I think most people rated Coutinho and so did the model - this would've probably been the number one replacement for either of the two Spainards. Walcott under-performed not only the model, but also everyone else's expectations.

The only poor performer up top was Anelka, and so the model I think did well - even though Benteke did a lot to carry the team's performance.

Combining RMT with human intervention, would likely have seen Coutinho and Silva come in for Mata/Santi with Lukaku coming in for Anelka. This would have resulted in a net improvement of 12 points.

So for those interested in what the model is predicting going forward:
after playing the wildcard immediately, creating the team to avoid any price jumps and re-creating lead to this team:

    Boruc/Speroni
    Zabaleta/Walker/Figueroa/Collins/Ward
    Gerrard/Coutinho/Walcott/Brady/Jedinak
    RvP/Sturridge/Crouch

(the team managed to hold Zabaleta early in the week and avoided missing the 0.1 rise)

Calculations are only done with a 6 week view, so the GK rotation may not work out long-term.

Agreed, but I think we all would've said not Santi and Mata, giving Oscar, Coutinho and Silva a real shout at being picked - 2 of which did well.

I think the model did pretty well considering.

I like the look of the new team. Feels balanced, perhaps wouldn't put as much faith in Liverpool's attack - but if they do score you definitely will get the points on offer with those three. I would probably go Gerard -> Silva in that team and perhaps Walker -> Dawson/Coleman

Santi and Mata should have been passed on due to fitness, RMT doesn't account for everything.

I think if you come here more than once a week, you should support through membership.

I guess the lesson is don't let the RMT stuff dictate what you do when there are obvious issues.

I'm still going to leave this test running purely as a matter of interest without human intervention because I want to see how good the model really is.

(Also I honestly don't think that it's a problem to treble up on good attacks)

      Interesting post, thanks.
Haven't seen RMT, but did build my own predictive model a couple.of seasons ago, so would be interested to see what they did differently to me.
Naturally they'll be using last season and pre-season, but definitely feels a bit early to be able.to make v accurate predictions, especially with newly promoted teams and all of the personnel and management changes over the summer.
      Keep these.coming!

Hull looked very tidy vs. Che once Huddlestone and Livermore came on..

Definitely not starting Collins. Between Murner and Chester. Been pondering all week. Bookies favour Hull as well.

Me too. Feels more comfortable captaining big money like Sldado or Walcott - but Lambert in front of his own fans against a iffy-looking Sunderland defence is tempting

should i play an unlikely striker Lukaku or my cheap defender/Midfielder? Specifically:

    a) Lukaku (mun)
    b) Chester (NOR)
    c) Dikgacoi (stoke)

    Which of the 2? Thanks.

I think Jose left him out to wind him up more for the United game, I'd be surprised if he didn't start. Not sure if he will score though, I'm on United for 2 or 3 nil

    Morning lads & ladies,

How are we all lined up for the week? Captain picks sorted? I'm torn between my front 7 of

    Wally-Silva-Miralles-Oscar
    Aguero-Dzeko-Soldado

Strongly leaning towards Miralles, please talk me out of this gamble!!

Early days I would tend towards the safer option of Soldado but I would here take a small punt on Aguero for potential big points return - he got my vote in the poll but sadly I have Dzeko.

It's a very tough one this week for me, all of them are decent shouts in their own right, here's hoping Miralles gets a goal and an assist! Not sure on Aguero getting a full game and City haven't got the greatest away record recently. Soldado looks good though.

soldado is a popular choice. i would have picked Dzeko or maybe Aguero. I foresee them hitting Cardiff hard even when playing away.
