Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard is set for a four week spell on the sidelines. The announcement comes following consultation with a specialist which led to surgery on his troublesome groin.

In Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms, this will come as a blow to Gerrard’s 6.8% ownership as the instrumental midfielder looks set to potentially miss at least the next two Premier League fixtures (BOL whm). The skipper will also sit out next Thursday’s crunch Europa League second leg fixture with Braga; Liverpool trail 1-0 from last night’s first leg.

Liverpool’s spot kicks will now be up for grabs in Gerrard’s absence. After scoring a memorable hat-trick against Manchester United last weekend, Dirk Kuyt may be at the front of the queue having already assumed duties this season. The Dutchman has been a key figure in Liverpool’s turn in fortune over the last few months and, with Gerrard out of action, holds plenty of potential. Luis Suarez may yet have something to say when it comes to spot-kick duty, the Uruguayan will also be looking to pick up direct free-kicks – it was his effort from distance which led to Kuyt’s hat-trick goal against United.

Gerrard’s setback comes at a time when new signing Andy Carroll is in line to make his full debut for the club, following his £35 million pound move from Newcastle. Carroll’s influence as a target man was seen briefly in his substitute appearance during last night’s game with Braga. Kenny Dalglish will be frustrated at the timing of these events – Liverpool are surely set to miss Gerrard’s delivery, which would be a perfect compliment to Carroll’s aerial dominance in the box.

Injuries to FPL midfield favourites are now mounting up, leaving Fantasy Managers searching for replacements. Gerrard joins an already overflowing list which includes Tim Cahill, Cesc Fabregas, Nani, Theo Walcott and Mikel Arteta amongst others. The likes of Kuyt, Samir Nasri and the Villa contingent of Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Marc Albrighton are set to pick up further interest as a result, while Frank Lampard’s recent resurgence could well see renewed interest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Why is there so much love for Bale, and not VDV? vdv is on pens, FKs and his average position much closer to goal.

because i would have transferred bale out before that 15, as that 15 would probably be some tough away game. bale and ashley young go hand in hand on fpl.

I personally will be going for both of them, so there's no conflict. When Spurs have such a fantastic run of fixtures, and they seem to be able to score in tandem pretty well, it's a good use of money I think.

I have completed the 1st half of the FPL Open draw. Will get to the 2nd half in the next 24 hours.

    http://torresmagic.webs.com/fplopenroundone.htm

If you are outside the top 64 & not a GW29 qualifier you can check your opponent by using this:

    1) Find out your exact rank by going to the table. If there are 2 teams ranked 113 & your team is the 2nd one then you are actually 114th & so on.

    2) Once you know your number minus it from 513. 513 – 114 = 399

    3) Find the 399th ranked team the same way. That is your 1st round opponent.

or you can just ask me for the next 20 minutes or so.

Is the same team entered twice with the same link? Haven't checked it as such apart from the qualifiers. I think you are in the 2nd half although you know your opponent.

Would be good to just get one person left to win it. Too many consistent teams though. Rules won't break the overall leader in the Club.

Yeah i fancy west ham too but just not enough. Might have a pop on Demba Ba anytime once the teams are out.

As for United - Arsenal game, can only see one winner and have the mancs in my accy. Reckon Burnley might be a decent bet too at home to Millwall although it is sinful to back the filthy clarets

Yeah Id say your pretty close with that. Van P might start on the bench and come on if needed. You never know what Fergie will do. He will probably put Gibson, oshea, Fletch, smalling, maybe even Brown on so Arsenal could do a job on us. Chicarito could sart though and I truly think the lad is a genius.

    Morning FA Cup weekend..

Is it still right that the draw of Man Utd v Arsenal and Man City v Reading will cause a blank on GW30 for Man Utd, Arsenal, and Man City?

    Alreet lads

I want Lampard in for GW32. Who should I be looking to drop out of Fab, Nasri, VDV, Young, Nani? I'm can afford this all-star if I go for my genius (?) plan of rotating Wellbeck and Best alongside RVP. I might look to get Tevez back in GW34. I'm kind of hoping that either Fab or Nani get confirmed out for a long enough period to make the decision for me. Thoughts?

I'm leaning towards Nani being the odd one out as Man Utd probably have the weakest fixtures. And he might take time to get back to form. If I do that though, should I get him out before next gameweek for VDV (rather than Nolan), and replace Nolan with Lampard in GW32.

My plans are very similar, looking to get lamps in gw 32 and have rvp, welbeck & sturridge up front. Imo you should drop fab or nasri for lamps, but if you do decide on selling nani then yeah you may as well do it this week and keep nolan for the next 2 games (sto, WOL)

Seeing you are in the top 2K it would be unfair to penalise you like that. I think the fairest thing would be to penalise you 4 points max depending on your rival taking a hit. Thanks for reminding me about that as I need to leave a note next to the qualifiers with a wildcard.
