As another transfer window slams shut, we take a look at some of the moves that have taken place over the past 24-hours prior to 11pm. We’ll have full Moving Target and Scout Report article on the main protagonists over the next few days but, for just now, here’s a heads-up on some of the trades that could have a real say on our Fantasy thinking over the season ahead.

Mesut Ozil to Arsenal
Finally, Arsene Wenger has splashed the cash and grabbed a real marquee signing. Arriving at the Emirates in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £42.5 million, Ozil affords Fantasy managers a real premium talent to consider for their five-man midfields. While many will be contemplating bringing in the German international, his installation as Arsenal’s chief playmaker will, in turn, boost the Fantasy prospects of the Gunners attackers, with his superb eye for a pass set to tee up chances aplenty for Wenger’s side. With Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott on either flank and Olivier Giroud leading the line, the former Real Madrid man should garner numerous assists from the role in “the hole” – rather than mulling over a switch to the new boy, Walcott and Giroud Fantasy owners will be licking their lips at the prospect of Ozil’s acquisition. There are two big questions now – how much will Ozil cost us and do we dare double up on Arsenal’s attacking assets?

Mamadou Sakho to Liverpool
Liverpool have invested heavily in the versatile defender from PSG, whose acquisition has been described as “a massive coup” by Brendan Rodgers. Kolo Toure’s Fantasy owners have every reason to be concerned here – the Reds will hardly have shelled out £15m for a bench-warmer, with Sakho, who can also operate at left-back, looking odds-on to partner Daniel Agger in the heart of the Merseysiders’ back-four. His price will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – given the Agger, Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson are all 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sakho will be earmarked by many if he’s listed as cheaper. Toure’s current groin injury may hand Sakho – providing he is fully match-fit – a chance to step into the first XI in a fortnight’s time, while Martin Skrtel looks set to slip further down the pecking order. With a strong run of fixtures ahead, Sakho will move quickly onto Fantasy radars in light of the Reds’ opening run of three successive clean sheets. There are several questions to answer now – how much will Ozil cost us and do we double up on Gunners attacking assets?

Victor Moses to Liverpool
According to Brendan Rodgers, the Nigerian international’s arrival could occasionally see Philippe Coutinho shifted to a central position behind the lone striker for the Reds. The Liverpool boss has revealed that, while Moses offers his side options on both flanks, he feels the former Wigan man is best utilised on the left as an inverted winger – a scenario which would hand Coutinho the role in “the hole”. With Luis Suarez back from suspension towards the end of the month, though, and the likes of Iago Aspas and Jordan Henderson offering options on the right, it remains to be seen just how much game time he’ll be handed over his season-long loan deal, though Rodgers revealed he’s been after the player previously and is clearly an admirer.

Martin Demichelis to Man City
With Vincent Kompany currently sidelined due to a groin injury, Manuel Pellegrini has added to his central defensive options for the upcoming campaign. Although his side have registered two clean sheets in three matches, Manuel Pellegrini has turned to a familiar face in order to avoid a repeat of the display which saw Cardiff put three past City in Gameweek 2 – bearing in mind Demichelis has previously played under the Chilean for River Plate and Malaga, he’s clearly a favourite of the new manager. While Kompany will surely be nailed-on once he returns in around four to six weeks, Matija Nastasic no longer appears a definite starter alongside the Belgian, while Joleon Lescott – despite starting all three games so far – looks likely to tumble down the pecking order once Pellegrini has as fully-fit quota of centre-halves to choose from. The Chilean has already rotated in the left-back area and although leaving Pablo Zabaleta has been quick off the mark, we’ve yet to see how Pellegrini assesses the right-back slot once Micah Richards returns from a hamstring complaint.

Marko Arnautovic and Stephen Ireland to Stoke
The Austrian offers options through the middle and on the right flank for the Potters. Mainly utilised as a right winger by former club Werder Bremen, Arnautovic racked up five goals and eight assists last season from the flank but, standing six foot three, he’s an obvious target man alternative to Peter Crouch up front. Jon Walters’ owners could be a little worried by Arnautovic’s arrival, too – the Republic of Ireland international has been fielded on the right in each of the opening three Gameweeks. Mark Hughes’ decision to snap up Ireland from Villa on a season-long loan is an intriguing one. The midfielder – down to 4.8 in FPL – is likely battle with Charlie Adam for the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker and, given that he produced his most impressive football under the Welshman during their time together at City, is clearly a favourite of the Potters boss.

Adrian Mariappa and Jack Hunt to Crystal Palace
Arriving from Reading, Mariappa offers the Eagles plenty versatility and pace in defence and can play at either centre-half or right-back, while Hunt – a highly-rated former Huddersfield right-back – also threatens to shake up the defensive pecking order for the promoted club. Granted, Palace have hardly been particularly resilient at the back but both Danny Gabbidon and Joel Ward – at 4.0 apiece in FPL – have offered Fantasy managers a security of cut-price starts thus far under Ian Holloway. The pair of new signings may well place question marks against their guaranteed game time. With Barry Bannan, Andrew Johnson and Adlene Guedioura also arriving before today’s deadline, Palace were the most active Premier League club on show.

Libor Kozak to Aston Villa
The Czech international striker arrives from Lazio and made his mark for the Serie A club last term, where he finished the season as top scorer in the Europa League after racking up 10 goals. Kozak, according to Paul Lambert, has been signed to take the burden off Christian Benteke, with the Villa boss looking for target man back-up to the bustling Belgian. Given Lambert’s penchant for a lone striker system, the new boy may have to rely on cup games to prosper once again, with Benteke undoubtedly remaining the main man for the midlanders.

Alvaro Vazquez to Swansea
Michael Laudrup has once again returned to the Spanish market, with the 22-year-old forward arriving on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal. The move may be good news for Michu owners – Laudrup has shifted last season’s top scorer into the lone forward role in two of the first three Gameweeks as he eases Wilfried Bony into the fold and Michu has toiled so far this term, firing blanks in each of his three league appearances. While Vazquez is unlikely to claim a regular starting berth, his arrival will afford the Swans’ more options as Laudrup attempts to juggle Europa League duties – the Dane reckons the youngster “will give us a different option” up top from the brute power offered by Bony.

Peter Odemwingie to Cardiff
Frozen out at the Hawthorns after failing to force through a move to QPR in the previous transfer window, the Nigerian wings his way to Wales as Malky Mackay adds more top-flight experience to his squad. Odemwingie’s versatility could afford him game time on the flank but, classified as a forward in Fantasy games, he is set for a reverse out of position berth, should he managed to force his way into the Bluebirds first-team. Having failed to feature for Steve Clarke’s side, fitness will surely be an issue for the Nigerian – game time from the bench seems the likeliest scenario, with the possibility of a role up top only if Mackay opts for a two-man frontline when chasing a result.

Morgan Amalfitano to West Brom
Arriving from Marseille on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move, the Frenchman will also afford the goal-shy Baggies a much-needed creativity. Mainly utilised as a right-sided midfielder, Amalfitano will be looking to return to the form that harvested five goals and 16 assists for Lorient back in 2010/11. Given that the midlands side have failed to score a single goal, a starting role looks likely for the new boy as Clarke looks for better service for the likes of Nicolas Anelka up top.

Stephane Sessegnon to West Brom
Omitted from the Sunderland squad last weekend as a result of a drink-driving arrest, the Benin international was on borrowed time under Paolo Di Canio. A move to the Hawthorns looks the best move for all parties concerned as Sessegnon looks to rediscover the form that produced 161 and 141 FPL points over the past two seasons. A host of new faces places question marks over some of the current Baggies crop – with Sessegnon best-suited to a role behind a lone striker and Amalfitano situated wide right, James Morrison owners, in particular, will be somewhat concerned where the first-team shake-up leaves the Scot. At 6.8, Sessegnon could tempt some; bearing in mind Clarke has broken the club record fee to tempt him, he looks nailed on for the midlands outfit, with a return to last term’s 4-2-3-1 formation perhaps on the cards. With Victor Anichebe also arriving at the death from Everton, Clarke has significantly boosted his attacking options. Shane Long remained at the club, despite a proposed deadline day move to Hull City.

Andreas Dossena and Fabio Borini to Sunderland
Dossena’s arrival ends Di Canio’s summer-long search for a natural left-back and immediately raises question marks over Jack Colback’s game time. The midfielder has been filling in at the back due to a lack of options but could well lose his place to the former Napoli man; with home games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool in the next four, Fantasy managers will be steering well clear of the Black Cats’ defenders. Borini offers the Sunderland boss another frontline alternative should be prefer to play with two up top – Steven Fletcher is likely to be eased back into full fitness off the bench, allowing Borini to battle it out with Connor Wickham for a space alongside Jozy Altidore. Once Fletcher is up to full match sharpness, though, the loan signing is likely to rely on game time off the bench for the Wearsiders.

Romelu Lukaku to Everton
While the clubs are yet to confirm the deal, the player himself has declared the move complete via twitter. Having failed to persuade Jose Mourinho he’s worthy of a first-team slot, Lukaku is to move to Merseyside on a season-long loan. With 17 goals and seven assists for West Brom in 2012/13, Lukaku was a mid-price phenomenon for the Baggies and has dropped dramatically in price to 7.4 due to his lack of minutes over the first three Gameweeks. After falling off Fantasy radars over the last few weeks, Lukaku is suddenly, and somewhat unexpectedly, back in the mix as an option up top once again – given that the Toffees have failed to score in each of their last two, Roberto Martinez’ side clearly need someone to finish off the multitude of chances they are creating. If you’re already eyeing up a transfer in, it’s worth noting Lukaku is unavailable for Gameweek 4 – the Toffees host parent club Chelsea at Goodison.

Marouane Fellaini to Man United
The Belgian’s last-minute move to the champions sees him reunited with David Moyes at Old Trafford. Fielded in “the hole” behind Nikica Jelavic in the previous campaign, his 11 goals and seven assists forced a substantial hike across the Fantasy games but Fellaini’s position will be far less offensive than last time around, with Moyes expected to station the former Toffee in front of the United back-four. It remains to be seen what Fellaini’s departure from Goodison will mean for Ross Barkley, though; the youngster be set to retain his starting role as the most advanced of the Everton midfield three under Roberto Martinez, with Darron Gibson – when fit – slotting in alongside Leon Osman in the centre of the park. However, with both Gareth Barry and James McCarthy arriving at Goodison, there’s no question that Martinez will have new options in the engine room.

Anyone on a WC getting rid of Soldado?

Seems mad with his fixtures but with Giroud looking to rise a further 0.2 and with Santi/Ozil/Theo supplying him from now on, I'm tempted to go with the Frenchman. Not to mention he also has great fixtures.

Giroud was and is the first name on my team sheet. However, people dismissing Soldado cause of 2 penos are just wrong. He's gonna be one of the top scorers this season with the service he gets. He may take a GW or 2 more but it will come. Would never waste a transfer for him but since you on WC you might as well and get him in later

He's looked terrible this far though, to be honest! If it weren't for the 2 pens he'd have less than 3% ownership I bet!

kinda agree but bit sideways removing him out on a transfer like ppl have suggested. If on WC do it! if not.. stick. He will come good.. Followed him a lot over his career and he's never really extravagant as such. Gets 2-3 chances in the box and scores a goal. Wont ever have gr8 underlyin stats

Yeah easy decision. I've watched all 3 spurs games and they havnt looked like scoring, although Soldado did have a couple shots blocked against arsenal. did lukaku to giroud after week 1 but plan on getting sturidge and Benteke for soldado and Lambert while on Wildcard.

some arsenal fans told me he loves to score at home but doesn't do as well on the road. and arsenal have 3 of the next 4 away.

not to mention that soldado has been quite close to scoring from open play and will start to rack up the goals quite soon imo

I'd prefer walcott + soldado to giroud + lamela personally

I wish people would stop banging on about Arsenal’s apparent frailty at the back. Mertesacker, Koscielny, Sagna, Gibbs, Monreal, Vermealen, Jenkinson. When you think that Sagna and Verm can both play full back and centre back, i really don't think we're as desperate for a new CB as people make out. Only one team conceded fewer goals than us last year with exactly the same defence that we have now.

Also, another striker would have been nice, but people forget that Walcott can play there, and has done so quite well in the past. If Giroud got injured, we’d still have Theo or Podolski (or even Sanogo) as striker, with Ozil, Wilshire, and Cazorla behind him.

Ramsey is playing well, as is Rosicky, and Flamini did very well against Liverpool adding bite to the midfield.

We have three decent keepers, and one of the best managers in the world. It’s a good time to be an Arsenal fan!

Agreed -- selling Song was so damaging and so unnecessary. I wish he was still in the team.

I don't think Arsenal's first XI was ever the issue, or even their 15-man squad in these games. Its when the season gets long that they will struggle to cut the mustard. Perhaps the January window will be fruitful (...said the fool).

Have to disagree. Koscielny is a good defender. The penalty he 'gave away' against Villa should never have been, and he's composed on the ball rather than just a bruiser. Mert lacks pace, you're right on that one, but he reads the game well and is a powerhouse in the air. Sagna is a top defender and from we've seen of Jenkinson he will be too. Gibbs is class, and so is Verm when on form. Szczęsny can be erratic, for sure, but he kept us in the game against Spurs with a fine save and can improve.

Second best defence in the league last year says it all really.

Anyway I hope Ozil will show us some magic.. i luv this player... I've been following Kosc for a long time even when he was in Lorient.. he's good in the air, got pace, very tough guy, I also agree for that particular penalty against Villa.. but Still, the Guy is a HOT HEAD.. And when he's in that state of mind he's just like a bull who's seen the red color...

I think a lot of Arsenal's clean sheets last year (especially towards the end of the season) came down not necessarily to their defense's performances (or lack thereof) but rather to the team's excellent ability to keep hold of possession and an improved resolve to seeing out 1-0 victories instead of striving to create beautiful goals.

I think your first 11 is as strong as anyone, if Ramsey/Giroud continue to play well. I do think another centre back would have been good though. Koscielny/Mertesacker are very strong, but Vermaelen hasn't been at his best for a while and despite playing well in the preseason I have my doubts about Sagna there. Of course, if backup CB is your biggest problem, you're in good shape. Any team would struggle without their best defender, just look at Citeh.

It really is. Especially because Wenger gets so much stick for it. He was hammered over Kos and Mert when they had a shaky starts, but now they've tightened up and they still question it. Same with Ramsey, and same with Walcott, 'not good enough!', they said, now Ramsey looks great, and Walcott is one of the most dangerous players in the league.

Re your first point: I do agree. Mert and Kos have been really good so far, Kos was unfairly sent off and his brilliant tackle on Tekkers was misconstrued as a dangerous one. I admit Kos is a bit of a risk for reds and conceding pens, but I'm happy with our CB options, especially with Verm to come back. Sagna is small for a CB but I can't complain with his performance against Fulham for a second.

Another striker would have been nice but I'm not that fazed. I think signing someone like Ba would have been a mistake. He might expect to be starting and it could really unhinge Giroud who is doing very well.

I still think we need a strong DM to control our mid and prevent the holes that were apparent against AV, but I'm not going to complain.

I agree with you that adding another striker should not be an immediate concern for Arsenal, especially if they keep hold of Bendtner as backup to their existing options in Podolski, Giroud and Walcott who all provide something different up top.

However I think the need to invest in defense is less illusory, especially if Arsenal's ambition reaches beyond scrambling for a fourth place in the Premier League and advancing beyond the Champions League group stage (even the latter might not be as easy as in the past given the steady improvements that Napoli and Dortmund have achieved in the last few seasons).

From what I saw in the first few games it appears that Arsenal's defensive solidity relies on good organization and tight formation to compensate for the lack of marquee defensive players, which while lends support to Wenger's laudable philosophy of not overspending (especially on defense since a manager can mold players of a wide talent range into a useful, disciplined defensive unit), also hints at two sources of Arsenal's defensive frailty. Namely, against opponent players with extraordinary individual skills (think Agbonlahor in the first game) or against teams with good counter-attacking that can preempt Arsenal withdrawing into a tight defensive formation (again, think Aston Villa).

Since most teams planning on being competitive (and not merely competing) in more than their domestic league seem to have at least two established players for each position, Arsenal's depth at the defensive end stands out. In particular, as you have pointed out, after Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen, cover for Arsenal's central defense comes from Sagna, who himself is only covered by a competent but under-experienced Jenkinson, whereas Monreal and Gibbs are both better in attack than in defense, that does not leave much room for tactical maneuvers in game, or injury cover over the course of the season.

In particular, consider how Manchester City (Demichelis) and Liverpool (Sissokho, Sakho & Illori) have strengthened their defenses when their previous squads arguably already had better depth and experience. With the wear and tear of four competitions in mind, Arsenal should consider adding depth and experience to the heart of their defense, least they have to force teenagers through another series of baptisms by fire.

Working on a really stats based article on defenses in the league thus far. Should be published during the international break sometime. 🙂 Lots of stats to be imputed though

    Morning all,

As much as we all feel we overpaid for fellaini, we were desperate for a mid, commonly known fact, hence we hadmto pay a premium coupled with the timing. Did coentreo sign as yet??

Opted to ride out Pablo's price increase as it gives me a few days to decide

    Boruc (foster)
    Coleman Ivan Chester (murner ward)
    Miralas Wally coutinho taarabt (kim)
    Soldado lambert dzeko....have 5m

    A: Ivan + dzeko >> Hughes/mbiwa + rvp (-4)
    B: Ivan + miralas + dzeko >> mertesacker + p..hernandez + rvp (-8)
    C: WC
    D: any other options?

Why get rid of Ivan when he's playing Everton who havnt been able to score in last 2 weeks and have had the least number of shots from inside the box in the league? Cleansheet a very good chance I think.

      2. Walcott & Giroud will be boosted by Ozil so I'll start with those two and see how things develop.

      1. Should be 100% but I'd say about 80% for now
      2. Have Walcott and Giroud - I think they will be Arsenal's top 2. Ozil is an absolute beast but I will want to see if he's going to be relied on for scoring or not. I can see FPL overpricing him since it's hard to gauge how new players should be priced, and he is more of an assist machine. We will see though.

So, what's the price that Ozil needs to come in to tempt people?

    I imagine:
8.5 or less and about 100% of people will have him.
9.0-9.5 - Still tempting and will see acquisition, particularly from Arsenal fans and Madrid fans
    10.0 - Wait and see...

9.5 Is probably the price that would get him into most teams without too much sacrifice. People would love him to be 9.5.

Haven't seen much of Ozil on set-pieces but I do hope that many overlook Walcott for him (and that he does come in at 9.5).. Ozil's through-balls are almost on par with Bergkamp and Cesc and Walcott is going to be the big benefactor here.

Also depends on whether Ozil will play wide or Cazorla will.. Walcott will of course, benefit more with Ozil in the centre.

What happened with Coeantrao? Think is was Demi who said it was a done deal. Still, Van p and Rooney with Fellaini, Carrick, Nani/Zaha/Valencia/Kagawa is not too shabby. Still soild at the back too.

Had never heard of herrera before yesterday tbh.. seems pretty useful, but 36 million? Most stats ppl were putting up were about how he got more key passes than kagawa and carrick combined(just 35.. that's less than 1 a game) and how he's been fouled the most etc. Seemed like straw clutchin at the time

I dunno, the "Giroud is a donkey" line of thinking is difficult to break. His bandwagon was pretty slow even after his hothothot preseason and a goal in each of the first two. Plus people have the shiny new Ozil to distract them. But you're probably right, especially if Benteke doesn't score against Newcastle.

Bah! Just because he's not a Suarez like dribbler or an RVP like finisher doesn't mean he's a donkey. Or maybe it does, but it just means that donkeys are incredibly useful centre forwards.

Hello everyone! What do you think of this team for GW 4?

      De Gea (Boruc)
      Ivanovic-Kosc-Shaw-Coleman-Reid
      Walcott-Mirallas-Nolan
      Lambert-RvP

      RvP is the captain
Subs are: Brady, Chamakh, and Delph
I have 2.8 left in the bank with one free transfer left too.

I am thinking of going for Mignolet to replace De Gea or possibly buying Ramsey to replace Delph. Thoughts?

With all this talk of expensive defenders, is anyone going cheap? thinking of swapping Toure and Reid to Merte and Chester by GW 7 giving me
Merte Collins Coleman M.Turner Chester. I want lamps, Michu, Wally, Coutinho/Silva in midfield long term tbh. I really do think Hull will keep a lot of CS's uptil December with the system they play in. After that they'll prob have to go on the attack to get survival points but can see them being sound until then. that 5 man midfield with livermore and huddlestone is very very difficult to break through

      Evening DeadZzzz.

Nervous couple of weeks coming up.

I'd planned Dzeko --> RVP this week, but I'm also looking at a few players who might drop in value so wondering if I get itchy WC or hit fingers at some point.

The ones causing me nerves are:
Toure - about to be replaced
Morrison J - team look awful, slight injury and may lose place
Mirallas - people losing the faith

I've taken one 4 pt hit so far which worked out, so if I can avoid using the WC I guess one other hit isn't the end of the world. Assuming we get a juicy DGW sometime next spring.

        So what's the problem?

        Brady with upcoming fixtures IMO.

Hernandez is looking good. I also think Brady is a good punt with his fixtures and being on pens

Anyone making drastic changes to their team based on deadline day deals then? I'd already done my transfers and there's nothing really that makes me regret doing them early. Maybe look at Ozil at some point depending on price.

Lukaku's arrival and Baines staying at Everton has me thinking seriously about getting Leighton in.

Lukaku, Eto, Ozil, Osvaldo, and Lamela are the ones on my watchlist.

Agreed, Ozil is the only one I am watching.

Any way of fixing this mess without a WC?

      Cech Lewis
      Toure Coleman Olsson(nor) Chester Nosey
      Coutinho Silva Walcott Mirallas Ravel.M
      Aguero Giroud Dzeko

0.0 and 1FT (prepared to take necessary hits)

      Thanks.
