Scout Report – Marko Arnautovic

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his attacking options on deadline-day with the acquisition of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of five new faces at the club this summer along with Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Stephen Ireland.

Speaking to the Potters official website upon completion of the deal, Hughes admitted he’s been keeping an eye on the Austrian international for some time:

“Marko is a player we have been aware of for some time and I’m really pleased we have been able to add him to our squad. He has played at the highest level in Holland, Italy and Germany and is keen to make his mark in England with Stoke City.”

The History

A somewhat temperamental character, Arnautovic switched clubs five times during his youth career before finally settling with Dutch outfit FC Twente. After racking up the goals for the club’s youth team (22 goals in 24 games) and reserves (27 goals in 32 games) the Austrian made his senior debut towards the end of the 2006/07 season. The following year produced just a couple of assists from 14 league appearances before Arnautovic stepped up another level – 12 goals and six assists from 28 matches persuaded Italian outfit Inter to snap him up on a one-year loan deal.

Arnautovic’s time in Serie A was far from successful, though. A series of off-field indiscretions were not taken lightly by then-manager Jose Mourinho, who played him a mere three times in the league – the Portuguese boss reckons the player “is a fantastic person but has the attitude of a child”.

Picked up by Werder Bremen in the summer of 2010, Arnautovic produced 14 goals and 11 assists from 72 Bundesliga matches – with last season harvesting five goals and eight assists from 26 appearances – but his time with the German club was somewhat chequered; fights with team-mates and club suspensions for speeding backed up Mourinho’s previous claims. On the international stage, Arnautovic has turned out 37 times for his country, producing 10 goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Hailed as the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his move to Inter, Arnautovic isn’t short on skill or self-belief – a lack of application has been his downfall up until this point. A highly-talented individual, he was fielded almost exclusively on the right flank during his time at Bremen, though standing six foot three inches tall, he offers the Potters an intriguing option as a lone forward.

From a Fantasy perspective, his classification as a midfielder right across the games is particularly significant. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 4.9 in Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Austrian looks a budget-friendly proposition and will be fundamental to Hughes’ attempts to reform Stoke into a more attack-minded outfit after years of Tony Pulis’ less aesthetically-pleasing approach.

If Hughes has a midfield spot in mind for the new boy, Jon Walters’ owners have reason to be concerned. The Republic of Ireland international has played all three matches so far on the right and while he could be shifted to “the hole” behind a lone forward, Walters could also face competition from another new face, Stephen Ireland, for game time.

Alternatively, Arnautovic could take up the lone forward role – handing Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect as the Potters’ main goal threat. Peter Crouch started the first couple of Gameweeks but was dropped for Kenwyne Jones last week; the latter racked up a hat-trick in a recent Capital One Cup match but has been a peripheral figure under Hughes until now.

While back-to-back games against City and Arsenal will be enough to deter any would-be suitors for now, they should offer us a window into Hughes’ thinking and afford us the chance to assess where he intends to utilised Arnautovic. With three home games (NOR, WBA, SOT) and a trip to Fulham in four of the next five from Gameweek 6, Stoke’s upcoming schedule takes a turn for the better and, having grabbed six points from their first couple of fixtures, the Potters have been quick to adapt to their new manager’s approach as Hughes begins to prove the doubters wrong.

Mourinho's son signs for Fulham. Would you believe he named his son after him and that he's not a defender, but close..a goalkeeper.

    Sturridge Giroud Benteke

Really struggling with the 9.4m sized hole. Have thought about Yaya, then took him out due to unpredictability of city starters and who will get their points. Had Lamps in there, then took him out due to unpredictability again. Then went for Michu but am unsure due to him not firing yet and Swansea's fixtures not being brilliant just yet..

With that in mind I reckon we are probably looking at Nani, Kagawa, Welbeck, supporting RVP. Moyes is crazy if he doesn't start playing Kagawa so he will surely start now, unless Rooney is fit in time.

Erik Lamela or Christian Eriksen: Your Key Differential?

At 21 years of age, Erik Lamela was a bit of an unknown quantity to me, and with Roberto Soldado looking less than convincing (beside his 2 goals from the spot) at 9.7m and a plethora of viable attackers on offer, I had decided on 21 year old Christian Eriksen (8m) as a way into the Champions League spot contenders' attacking points.

The former Roma youngster, at 9m, is considered by FPL pricing folk as a premium mid. I wanted to understand why he'd be valued 1m higher than the Dane, who boasts 25 goals and 55 assists from just 113 matches in the Eredivisie.

    Field Positioning.
Lamela is widely regarded as a Right Winger, who is adept equally as a support striker or left winger (a la Bale). In fact, if you consider Bale as a comparative, Lamela should be seen as taking up slightly more attack minded positions. In his last appearance for Roma, Lamela attempted to beat his man at least 6 times in the attacking penalty area, as well as on several other occasions along the right flank.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/basics/spielervergleich/basics_111630_39381.html

If we consider Eriksen's positioning, relative to Lamela's, the key difference is the involvement of the players in the middle of the pitch. Eriksen plays predominantly as an Attacking Midfielder, adept equally as a support striker or a central midfielder.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/basics/spielervergleich/basics_69633_111630.html

If we look to the players' positioning over the coming season at Spurs, knowing AVB's 4-3-3 model, you could expect to see Lamela in more advanced positions over the season, working in less congested areas out wide in combination with Walker, while Eriksen will be prominent in Spurs' dynamic spine - with two 'athletic' DMs behind him in Dembele and Paulinho - granting him the licence to penetrate defences.

    Historic Attacking Returns.
From the two links above we can also establish a little more about these two characters:
Eriksen, as mentioned, was a supreme provider from AM at Ajax. On recent form, Eriksen boasts 17 assists and 10 goals from 33 league appearances. You could argue that he is almost twice as likely to grant you an assist as he is to score you a goal in any given game - an assumption underpinned by his Eredivisie career stats of 51 assists to 25 goals (0.22 goals per game and 0.48 assist p/g as mentioned). Eriksen has made his way through the ranks at Ajax. He was nailed on by the middle of the 2010/11 season and performed remarkably since.

Lamela comes to North London with goals in his locker: 19 in 62 Serie A games (0.3 goals per game), and has 12 assists in the same period (0.19 p/g). Perhaps more telling though, is his recent form: 15 goals and 5 assists in 33 Serie A games last season - a rate of 0.45 goals per game vs 0.15 assists per game. Lamela improved his strike rate drastically, yet decreased his rate of assists in the same period. This can be attributed to the big change in league vs his age. His first season in Italy, coming from River Plate in Argentina, was a bit underwhelming having arrived for a fee in the region of £15m. Having settled in his second season, his statistics show just why Spurs decided to pony up a record to secure his talent.

    Verdict.
Lamela will likely become AVB's direct replacement for Bale. As the clubs record signing, he is an almost certain starter as direct, attacking winger who promises goals, predominantly from the right. Eriksen will also be integral to Spurs' future successes, playing centrally, he will likely be high among the leagues top providers this season.

With 9.7m Soldado's ownership at 20.6% and defensively responsible Paulinho (7m) at 12%, one could surely gain an advantage from owning one of the new(er) boys. Eriksen and Lamela each have 0.3% ownership and at 8m and 9m respectively, looked primed for investment.

    I'm going with the Argie.

He was explosive this time of year last season, scoring 8 goals and 1 assist in 9 games from Sept 16th to Nov' 19th when he picked up an injury including 5 goals in the 5 defeats roma suffered in that period.

i'm 50-50 at the moment about Lamela starting the next match...
still, with the tottenham record of scoring few goals this season, would like to wait and see for at least the next GW.

particularly, if we're not using WC this week, we shouldn't take him [only my opinion]....

i have paulinho... i'll be happy to swap him with lamela or ericcksen in next few weeks.

I've seen Lamela play a lot for Roma. When he gets the ball he will most likely shoot, gets into the box and will play higher up the pitch than Eriksen. In my opionion he is well worth the extra 1.0m

thanks 7shadesofsmoke for this awesome analysis 😀

regarding formation, is AVB really certain to use 4-3-3 these weeks?
one factors i concern is Capoue who is currently injured. AVB needs Capoue for the DMF role. unless he choose to play Sandro, probably AVB will use double pivots (Dembele-Paulinho) until Capoue returns (i mean, 4-2-3-1). and then the AMF role will be the key as well, Eriksen or Sigurdsson.

Have seen him play in the Champions League too. He is brilliant. And the Dutch league has given us Afonso Alves. It has also given us Luis Suarez.

PS- He sometimes goes missing in the big games but he is quality. Probably the 2nd best import in the league

    How's this for week 4?

    Mignolet
    Fonte, Zabaleta, Mertesacker
    Lampard, Walcott, Silva, Nolan
    Sturridge (c), Dzeko, Soldado

    Subs: Given, Coleman, Turner, Thomas

Not sure whether to play Coleman against Chelsea. I didn't play Mertesacker against Tottenham and he got 8pts. Wouldnt know who to take off for him though.

I'm trying not to make a transfer this week so that next week I have 2FT in which I might do:

Dzeko > Lukaku for game time and I've not planned the other yet

So bloody hard choosing the 2 remaining mids in my RVP wildcard squad.

Settled on Walcott Lampard Nolan, then it's just a nightmare. Brady looks decent value and good fixtures upcoming, to rotate with...Sessegnon? Really tricky.

Once you start entering Sess territory then I think you're better off playing a better defender. Loads of options and lots more predictable.

    Or

Yeah, just putting Clyne in there cause he is .2 cheaper which could be good value in the long run

Why? I'm keeping. Had him since GW1 and West Ham have good fixtures, plus Carroll should be back soon to boost his appeal.
