Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which one would you bench next week?

    1. Barkley v. MCI (A)
    2. Brady v. AVL (H)
    3. Eriksen v. WHU (H)
    4. Michu v. SOU (A)
    5. Ramsey v. WBA (A)

    Replies much appreciated.

Right now, how do people think the final table will look like ? Before a game had been played, I had it as

    1 man city
    2 chelsea
    3 man united
    4 tottenham
    5 liverpool
    6 arsenal
    7 swansea
    8 southampton

and Ozil seemingly altered the entire table. As did Lukaku/Barry to Everton, Suarez sticking at Liverpool, Moses to Liverpool.

No idea how I'd call it now.

I definitely had Arsenal up there in the TOP 4. Also didnt think Man U would be in there. Didnt have Liverpool in top 4 either.

      Man City/Chelsea
      Man City/Chelsea
      Spurs/Arsenal
      Spurs/Arsenal
      Liverpool
      United
      Necastle/Swansea/Everton

thats sort of how I thought it would pan out, and it probably still can

after 6 weeks, the big 5 midfielders:
    Ramsey (46) Yaya (43) Brady (40) Barkley (34) Siggy (32)

will any of them be in the top 5 for midfielder points at the end of the season?

maybe 1 i'd guess, but i'd be wrong if i guessed which one

Ramsey's energy and ability to get into the right positions this season is fantastic.
If he continues to do that he will retain his spot and could well be in the top 5. IMO.

No I don't think they will, but it depends on injuries. I thought walcott and coutinho would be. I think Siggurdson has a chance based on him playing further up and experience.

Out of the first 11 top scoring midfielders? Or out of the spurs first 11? On the left it's only Holtby or Chadli challenging, and they seem to be doing well in the europa league and play more there. Holtby might challenge, but not Chadli, and maybe Lamela will take the right wing and Townsend the left, but i can't see it.

I think he's doing well, looks energetic, has lots of shots, some that hit the woodwork, go narrowly wide, if spurs only score a goal or two a game he'll be getting all the bonus points.

I meant out of Spurs first 11.

I can see both Holtby and Chadli taking his spot, specially once they have gotten used to the team and the club. They're being bedded in just like Lamela and will force their way through by the end Dec or early Jan. I rate them both as better than Siggy.

I think they'll all finish on the top midfielder page easily if they continue to get games (top 25-30 I think), but the only one who will come close to the top 5 is Yaya... and even then he will probably finish behind most similar priced mids...

Have taken a hit to earn some team value... last season I didn't have enough to keep up with others, and their ability to buy the more expensive bigger hitters really hurt my points.

Hopefully it pays off in the long term!

Worthwhile you think, or you should always play for max points each week regardless of rises and falls?

It a balancing act/ I refuse to take any price falls before xmas , so if two of my players are going to fall in price in the same week then will take a hit to remove.

Normally they are dropping in price for a reason and are best removed anyway

      It's a stock market!

I think it's when to buy and when to sell that counts.

A good player who rises is worth it. If he starts to fade, you'll be able to ship him out before he drops and get someone in who is performing and who you may not have been able to afford before.

      Kapeesh?!

i took more than i'd like already this season

i think early in the season when there's more volatility, a few hits for building early team value helps

but, the problem with that is they can get habit forming

points are what matters in the end

i've always found i have excess team value at season's end and unwisely try to use it all, while my team usually peaks in the mid 20s weeks and then fades despite team value

last year i totally lost my cool making stupid moves at the end trying to win my ML and looking at my opponent's team too much (53 team league at the time, but only the two of us were in position to win it)

Yeah I love a transfer! And I took more than average last season too. I don't think I will take as many this season based on the fact that I started playing from GW1 and not GW 8 like last time.

There was a real strong template midfield last time around and they took some funds if you didn't get in early. The Power 5 with RVP was killer.

Yeah. Just think that Barca will have so much possession that Celtic will have limited attacking opportunities. Just remember, Barca doesn't have to win... they just can't concede before half.

    about Eden Hazard

ankle problem over last int'l break
Belgian indicated Chelsea were giving him painkilling injections before games to play
now he has ankle problem again and will miss Steau Bucharest game

wondering if he needs a longer layoff to heal
wondering if he will not get the needed rest and will wind up underperforming until he gets a more serious injury

    starting to seem that way

Still a good choice but I think Sturridge/Lukaku/bentke are better players. Just cuz Giroud in better team. Last 2 Sturridge assists, I dont think Giround can do it. People here dont agree but I think Wallcott absence effects Giroud, who ususally scored from crosses, Walcott injured is bad news for him

I have Ozil, considering Ramsey and will get Walcott later so I ditched Giroud for Suarez to double up

You probably all remember the dismantlement of Wimbledon to Milton Keynes, and how the fans vowed to continue their club?

can someone tell me, how a player's price shifts in Total FPL?

which one tells us that his price is going to change:
    1. Progress
    or
    2. Change today

    Saw Suarez's Progress around 190%
Now, if he had crossed 200 by tonight's deadline would he have risen to a straight 11.1 instead of 11.0
    AND
will he just require another 10/11 percent to rise to 11.1 by next price change?

Question: why is my overall rank different from the GW1 rank? 90,280 vs 90,283...

Well Lukaku saved my GW. Why did I captain Ozi? Because I suck. Anyway.

    Mig (Marshall)
Zab Turner (NOR) Ward Chester Brayford
    Eriksen Ramsey Ozil Michu Kim
    Lukaku Giroud Sturridge.

3.8m in the bank, 1 FT. I need to upgrade my defense - clearly. How about Chester to Walker? Good idea? Other suggestions? Thanks!
