Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Luckily I had Lukaku (c) this week to rescue me.

    Soldado > Suarez (c)
    HBA > Whittingham

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Zab Baines Vert (Ward Chester)
    Ramsey Eriksen Ozil Brady Whittingham
    Suarez(c) Giroud (Lukaku)

Looking good? Play Lukaku and bench...?

You know what i realized, the rest of the team suffering with RVP in the team argument is absolute nonsense with the likes of Rambo, Brady, Barkley, Boruc, Shaw coming to the party. Infact there is not one big midfielder apart from Michu who stands out for me yet. Expect Mata Theo Nani to come good but yeah.

Other issues have broken that monopoly though. Mass upgrading of defences to include 2 or 3 of Baines, Vert, Walker, Terry etc, as well Rooney and Suarez not exactly being cheap either. Throw in an exciting marque (and marque priced) mid in Ozil and probs with owning RVP start to arise.

Can't just go on price though - players like Ramsey have always had the potential but injuries halted progress and so FPL value him low, now he's fulfilling his potential so realistically his "value" should be nearer 9.0 mil in real terms. Price in FPL doesn't necessarily have a bearing on how good a player may be (see Lukaku and his ridiculously low price compared to other, suckier strikers) 🙂

Still don't rate Brady? Have you actually seen him play?

Barkley was outstanding as well last night. I don't rate Ramsey as high as those two but guess he will keep on scoring for the fun of it.

Point is; take the points where ever you can get them. Can't be sitting on luxury mids whom are not producing. My rank is full of it so haven't been practicing what I preach. Gonna dump RVP as well if not performing vs SUN

Interesting to see how long Brady will be out after the hernia operation..

What you are not getting here is that RVP is not getting you points.

Forget whether you can fill up the rest of your squad with cheapies who are scoring well. RVP isn't.

And while you're captaining him and picking up 2 and 4 pointers the people who went without RVP from the start have been raking in points from their big hitting defs and other strikers.

I know as I had RVP until last gw.

Keeping him now is, imo, an act of supreme self delusion.

You shouldn't leave RVP out because he makes the rest of your team crap.

You should leave him out because he's one of 4 strikers in a bottom half team. I would leave him out even if he were £8m.

Giroud is nailed on in the team 1st in the league.
Suarez and Sturridge are nailed on in the team 2nd in the league.
Soldado is nailed on in the team 3rd in the league.
Lukaku is nailed on in the team 4th in the league.

I could go on, but the other 7 strikers are left to the reader as an exercise.

          Mignolet Marshall
          Terry Mert Collins MTurner Brayford
          Michu Ozil Mirallas Moses Kim
          Soldado Sturridge Giroud

Doing Collins -> Clyne for my 1FT, can't afford anything else.

My thinking is that.. Soldado has 3 good fixtures, no rush. Mirallas can be benched a GW if injured, two good fixtures after City. Fixing defense first prio, only got 3 playing defs.

since u have money in ur bank.. I probably get Suarez... then in the next few weeks downgrade William and upgrade ur defense.

just wondering why u did not sell Williams earlier, I saw u keep saying soldado will come good. I think so too but no point holding on to him waiting for him to come good when there are so many already "came good" strikers

Lukaku is such a beast though and I'm assuming you got Barkley on the cheap? In that case you could always bench him when you don't want to triple up on Everton...

Newcastle have Totts, Pool and Chels in the next 5. All pretty stingy when it comes to goals conceded. I would think Lukaku to outscore Remy in the next 5 games.

Decide on just one of Walker or Terry :sigh:
Gonna be doing it for a hit this week to replace Collins but pretty confident both will cover the hit this week atleast. Will be for the relative long term

    A) Walker - 5 shots in 6 games, 4 Bps without attacking points, 13 key passes! Nailed on. Good fixtures. Spurs looking solid. 0.1 cheaper 🙂
    B) Terry - Relatively nailed on. 1 Goal, 1 Assist. 4 bps in games without attacking points. 5 shots. 3 key passes. Mourinho effect 🙂

    Thanks

Better fixtures, less competition for his place, Spurs better defensively so far, more attacking threat... I'd say most things point in his direction, except the fact that Terry is one of the best players in the world at heading a ball. I still Walker will outscore him comfortably in the gameweeks to come.

Hi Dogba, thoughts on wildcarding this week?

        Current team:
        Mig (4.0)
        Coleman, Zab, Toure, Terry (Chester)
        Michu, ramsey, moses (silva, mir)
        Rooney(c), giroud, lambert

        WC draft:
        Mig (4.0)
        Coleman, Dawson, Clyne, Terry (Chester)
        paulinho, ramsey, ozil, whittingham (barkley)
        Rooney, suarez(c), sturridge

1.2m in the bank. Downgrade sturridge-->lukaku gw 8

Lukaku single-handedly pushed me up 200,000 places. Riding high at £1.6m!!

    Boruc / Foster*
    Coleman / Collins / Toure / Baker / Chester*
    Barfa / Ozil / Eriksen / Brady / Morrison
    RVP / Lukaku / Sturridge

I've got £1.5m in the bank and think Chester > Mertesacker is most sensible option, but..

Concerned about: Rooney, Suarez, and continued returns for Ramsey and Yaya, Eriksen not producing any points, Barfa subbed at HT.... Thoughts?

Very nice. That front-line is looking absolutely menacing, I'm actually jealous.

Fix your defense first IMO, at least yor midfield is playing and can get points. Collins is more money tied up on the bench, ditch him before Chester?

Thanks mate! Just need Man United to find some form and RVP to start scoring now. I think a trip to the Stadium of Light will suit nicely!

I agree with you on the defence. I think midfield is going to come good - Ozil and Brady in good form, Eriksen looking very good (if not producing the points).

        Collins > ....

Of course this is all contingent on nobody getting injured midweek.

I'm very impressed with the Southampton defense, but you already have Boruc... uhm... Mert is perhaps your best bet indeed, Arsenal's got good fixtures and he looks nailed. You could also go Dawson, he seems to be holding his spot down at least short-term.

SWA has the best short-term fixtures according to the ticker. Michu is the obvious pick, put I'm thinking about 2 other possibilities:

    1. Shelvey - any love for the bald guy? Or thoughts on an alternative MID?

    2. A DEF, but him not sure who to go for. Any recommendations?

      1. Shelvey is a good player for them but not for FPL. Has the odd howitzer but usually assists the assist.

      2. Defender for sure, if going with Michu, all similar priced therefore Davies is the obvious choice. At the Liberty often turns into a winger, Zabaleta style.

You see, I think this may happen too.

He deserves a shot and I think he'll get it.

Moses to Barkley at this point of time - rash move? Most in ML have him (the ones above me). Fixtures are good for Moses so I fancy him as a differential.

Thoughts? No Ramsey and 0.1 short of him as well if that makes a difference.

Worst possible fixture to be bringing him in.

Ramsey can be covered by other Arsenal mids, he won't continue being the main man and score 30+ this season.

However, now secured, Barkley I would suggest is essential. Afforded the No. 10 role under an ultra-attacking manager with a clinical striker in-front in which to assist and run-off from. Throw in his price and he's superb value and therefore essential.

Moses if you want double-Liverpool coverage given the fixtures but don't want to double up on Suarez and Sturridge.

Don't let the cheap prices cloud your judgement [Obi-wan], a good, in-form FPL player is a good, in-form FPL player regardless of price. If he's cheap, all the better.

You sir, speak sense. One of the best replies I've had on here recently...

Rotation threat was holding me back but I don't see him being dropped completely even he's rested for the odd game.

I've currently got Suarez and Moses so will probably keep for this week's fixture at least. Intend to save the transfer and have more flex come GW8.

Totally agree on the last sentence. Couple of weeks ago I had to get rid of Hernandez and 3 options presented themselves; Moses Ramsey and Barkley. I let price and "reputation" sway me and picked Moses. How wrong I was as I've given up 21 or 17 points had I gone either way.

*Terrible move THIS GW. Next GW, sounds great if Moses keeps blanking.

Thanks, just needed someone to tell me i'm sane in not jumping on the Barkley wagon. Definitely makes way for Barkley if he keeps blanking. Thanks

Yeah I'm seriously considering himself as a Mirallas, Moses or Kim replacement. He keeps impressing and I'd say he's nailed down the spot when they start pushing Osman on the left wing instead of ditching Barkley.
