For even the most experienced of Fantasy managers, this season hasn’t quite gone to plan. Those multiple hours of detailed analysis on player statistics and fixtures list which have proved crucial to past success have yet to reap reward – it’s been a frustrating first couple of months. Conventional Fantasy Football wisdom may have failed us so far but with another 31 Gameweeks of the campaign yet to unfold, it’s time to regroup and assess the situation.

In the first of this two-part feature, we cast an eye over the top 10 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, analyse the current transfer trends in order to gauge just how strong the “template team” for this season has become and look at ways to remedy the malaise currently afflicting many of our Fantasy squads.

What is the template squad and how established is it?

By looking at the top 10 teams in FPL, it’s immediately apparent just how quickly the template for early-season success has settled – a pool of 13 players populates at least four of those sides.

9 – Aaron Ramsey and Daniel Sturridge
8 – Yaya Toure and Olivier Giroud
7 – Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku
5 – Simon Mignolet, Artur Boruc and Ross Barkley
4 – John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte and Michu

Broken down, by position this lends itself almost perfectly into the 3-4-3 formation preferred by Fantasy managers – Southampton’s Artur Boruc ties with Simon Mignolet for a place between the sticks, whilst Chelsea’s John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic have proven equally popular in defence.

GK: Boruc/Mignolet
DEF: Terry/Ivanovic, Fonte, Baines
MID: Ramsey, Toure, Barkley, Michu
FWD: Sturridge, Giroud, Lukaku

The rest, however, practically pick themselves, with Mesut Ozil and Hatem Ben Arfa the closest to breaking the midfield monopoly, having found a place in three of the top 10 teams so far. Up front, however, the situation is emphatic –Sturridge, Giroud and Lukaku are overwhelming favourites. Indeed, four of the top five have those three leading the line, with six of the top 10 opting for the trio. Such is their popularity, they take up 24 of the 30 forward slots in the top 10, with only five other forwards (Luis Suarez (twice), Wayne Rooney, Roberto Soldado, Loic Remy and Dwight Gayle) deemed worthy of consideration.

Why has it been so effective?

The overall downturn in goals, combined with the new FPL Bonus Points System (BPS), has also played a significant part in how the season has unfolded. With players benefitting more than ever before from a clean sheet, the forwards’ collective inability to find the net has, in turn, favoured backline options considerably.

25+ points30+ points40+ points50+ points
Goalkeepers12820
Defenders301540
Midfielders171031
Forwards12741

Looking at the table above, the lack of consistency from strikers is all too apparent. Granted, more frontmen have scored 40+ points than any other classification but dig deeper and the situation is clearer.

So far this season, a total of 40 players have scored 30 or more points in FPL but the spread across the classifications is revealing – eight goalkeepers, 15 defenders, 10 midfielders and just seven forwards. Even at the 25 point cut-off mark, the situation fails to improve – indeed, keepers (12) have kept pace with the forwards, with over double the number of defenders (30) producing the points.

The lack of impact from the premium midfielders, in particular, that has had an impact. It’s been a real kick in the teeth for those of us who had high expectations for the likes of Eden Hazard (741,000+ transfers out now), Philippe Coutinho (558,000), David Silva (521,000), Juan Mata (461,000) and Theo Walcott (459,000), with Ramsey, Barkley and the likes of Robbie Brady not only proving superb value but consistently outscoring the big guns to this point. In terms of big-money midfielders, only Yaya Toure, Oscar and Michu have stuck to the script in the opening seven Gameweeks – the rest of the current top 10 highest scoring midfielders started the season at 7.0 or less.

Up front, David Moyes’ arrival at United seems to have dented Robin Van Persie’s prospects. With attacking returns in only two of the first seven Gameweeks, the Dutchman has been a shadow of the player that took the Premier League by storm over the past couple of seasons and afforded Fantasy managers a reliable weekly armband contender. Aside from the injured Christian Benteke (875,000), no other forward has received more transfers out than Van Persie (593,000) but a lack of form, allied with a price tag of 13.9 and the cheaper in-form Rooney option for United’s upcoming schedule means more are bailing out.

Intriguingly, only one of the current top 10 started the season with Van Persie amongst their ranks – clearly, their initial lack of faith in the Dutchman has paid off so far.

Should I Look Break the Template?

Further deconstruction of the above-mentioned top scorers is revealing. Listed below are the total number of players to have produced 25 FPL points or more this term, analysed according to both starting price and classification.

4.5 – 5.05.5 – 6.06.5 – 7.58.0 – 9.09.5 and upwards
Goalkeepers552N/AN/A
Defenders15105N/AN/A
Midfielders43451
Forwards02244
Total24201395

Defenders who kicked off the campaign in the 4.5 to 5.0 price bracket are the most represented here – 15 have picked up at least 25 points in the first seven Gameweeks. As many as 35 keepers and/or defenders who began the season at 6.0 or less make the cut here – factor in the 11 midfielders at 7.5 or under who have also achieved this feat and it’s clear that value has been greater than ever this season.

The irony is that we typically rely on these budget players to save the pennies that allow us to acquire the big-hitters. As the data highlights, however, the premium options have, overall, simply failed to show any sort of consistency – only five players who started the season at 9.5 or more have managed to produce at least 25 points so far.

Previously, our patience is usually rewarded in such scenarios as the main men soon find their feet and start to rectify their lack of returns. Logic would suggest that Van Persie, for example, will start to find the net at a quicker pace, given that he’s scored twice inside the box from 19 attempts in the area – when you compare this to Ramsey’s stats of four and eight respectively, it highlights just how the Welshman has surpassed all expectations so far. Nevertheless, it also indicates that, in Van Persie’s case, he has still been presented with multiple opportunities to improve his goal tally – he simply hasn’t managed to take them. As our members area highlight, the underlying stats of many premium priced options remain very strong – they simply aren’t putting the ball in the net.

Ramsey, though, has shown time and again this term that the players in form are continuing to flourish and are punishing those managers who choose to overlook them. In midfield, his stats are poorer than team-mate Theo Walcott and Everton’s Kevin Mirallas, who have both fired 10 efforts from close range without finding the net once, yet the Welshman’s consistency of end product is, understandably, persuading the masses to jump on board the bandwagon.

The line between picking a player in form and chasing points seems thinner than ever this term. Certainly, those managers who have the likes of Ramsey or Toure will have no qualms over holding the pair but for those sitting near the bottom of their mini-leagues staring upwards, acquiring them at this point looks a debatable tactic.

Looking at the transfer trends over the last week shows it’s not just the top 10 managers who are keen on the template team. Of those 13 players mentioned above, Boruc and Mignolet are the two most transferred in keepers in the Gameweek, Fonte, Terry and Baines are three of the four most popular defenders, Barkley, Ramsey and Toure in the top four midfielders, whilst Lukaku, Sturridge and Giroud are in in the top five for most sought-after forwards. Given that Suarez and Remy make up the top five highlights the extent to which the masses are following the managers at the top.

One glance at the leader of the overall standings highlights how differentials can make the difference, though. He leapt to number one in the world last week after transferring in Adam Lallana, with the Saints skipper’s 11 point-haul against Swansea enough to help him to the summit . Regardless of overall standing, then, it’s clear that finding a less popular approach or player choice is key to combatting the template advocates – in the second part of this feature, we will highlight some available routes that could lead to shoots of recovery.

No I've already seen you as the anti Rooney to Lukaku guy as I've seen your posts numerous time advising people to hold fast. I even made a post about 2 paragraphs addressing you directly and why I disagree with you (don't know if you saw it).

Your table is based on four week, however in the last 2 weeks Rooney's stats have been AWFUL compared to Lukaku imo. Also the fact that as a United supporter I feel we have not got the midfield to power out Southampton (unless we have Kagawa to play a good classy game in between Wanyama and Schneiderlin) to give plenty of chances to our strikers. I really doubt Rooney will score from open play.

I’m not sure I entirely buy the premise of this article, or perhaps I’ve not quite understood it.

Forming any conclusions from the top 10 teams out of 3 million at such an early stage is always going to be fraught with danger. By definition, the teams at the top of the tree will have picked the players who have scored the most points - that is what has put them in the top 10. To then hold up these teams as somehow being advocates of a certain template seems like circular reasoning to me.

The assumption seems to be that the template consists of those players who have scored the most points over the first 7 weeks of the season. That’s fine, but the thing with this definition of ‘template’ is that it will constantly change as and when players’ form comes and goes.

Ramsey and Yaya may be template now, but if they go on a run of blanks whilst Walcott and Mata go on a run of goalscoring, well suddenly Walcott and Mata replace Ramsey and Yaya in the template, but it’s still a template.

So phrases like ‘combatting the template advocates’ just seems counter-intuitive. Surely under the premise the article is based on, you want the template players because those are the ones who are scoring the most points?

Clearly the top scoring managers have the top scoring players - that's to be expected - however, the sheer lack of variety across all positions has never been like this - in my opinion - I think that's what the article gets across.

It's not just the top ten either - we talk about the transfer trends so clearly, those players adopted by the top managers are been transferred in across the board. I took a random sample of teams whilst working on the FPL surgery last week and was shocked at the lack of variety in the teams.

Last season we saw a template midfield, this season, that template has gone further and is almost across the entire squad. Personally, I don't think we've had 8-9 players so engrained in squads like this.

Of course it's going to change but, as the trends show, many are banking on that not being the case and still adopting those players who have helped form it.

Are we sure the top 10 at this stage of previous seasons was not similarly based on a handful of template players? I haven't looked and I don't think we have the means to do so, but it wouldn't surprise me if in years gone by there was a distinctly template feel to the top teams at an early stage.

It's only as the gameweeks go by that early form players drop out of contention and the skill in switching to the next group of players to pick up some form starts to take more effect.

I think the crux of it is that the top managers have established themselves via a smaller pool of players than ever before. Sadly we don't have the statistical evidence to prove it - just anecdotal.

Personally, I can't remember a season where we've gone six weeks in and seen such a small group of players consistently deliver - it's been compounded by the fact that the likes of Brady, Barkley and Ramsey can be bought so cheaply, along with Southampton's defence and their price. There's been so few obstacles to get the players in question, meanwhile, the heavy hitters have continued to falter, offering little reason for the majority to keep the faith and keep away from the kind of names mentioned in the article. And yes, price rises play their part - again, I don't think we've had such a big cast of strong performers at the low end of the budget scale - another point raised by the article. With so many top performers in the low-to-mid bracket, it's driven more to take to the transfer market and wildcards for fear of missing out.

Also what we've not mentioned is the team value effect - people are much more likely to jump on bandwagons early on to get increases in team value - this just reinforces the template effect at this stage of the season.

This template effect is normally more obvious after the January wildcard (do I not like that!) or after the free GW2 wildcard a couple of years ago (which was even worse).

        I don't think it is usually quite so bad at this stage of the season, but there are a couple more factors to consider;
(1). A squad containing most of the top-scoring players so far is easily affordable because of the number of high-scoring bargains and the failure of higher-priced players. It isn't necessary to compromise in order to include them, and there aren't that many equally successful alternatives.
        (2) Many of the leading FPL managers have already used their wildcard.

It is easy to look at the highest-scoring players and to see that the currently leading FPL managers have many of them in their squads. A more interesting question would be how they managed to identify these players in advance - or were they just fortunate that the players they selected turned out to be more successful, and less injured or rested or rotated, than other players with equal potential selected by other FPL managers? Have they included many successful punts (if any)? Have they appreciated the effects of the changes to BPS and the assist rules better than most? Have some less successful FPL managers been looking at the wrong stats, or refused to believe that the form of some players such as Ramsey, Yaya and RVP might have changed since previous seasons?

Have to agree with this - it struck me immediately as well. My first thought was "what - 8 of the top 10 managers have Yaya bloody Toure!?" Then I realised they're up there basically because he (and the others) has scored lots of points so far. I don't think the top 10 means a lot at this point.

It's not so much the individual players but the small pool of players that collectively are shared amongst the top ten. We've got no evidence to say that this is smaller than ever but, while I definitely remember discussing a template midfield last season, I certainly don't recall having such a small pool across the entire squad being discussed.

Yeah, I see what you're saying.

Is there any evidence that this season the top scoring players have been more consistently scoring compared to others (e.g. Ramsey and Yay getting pts most weeks)? This might be why the only way to have scored highly so far is to have them.

Couple of things from this...Chelsea's DGW boosted their players considerably compared to this season's double. Also, this season, five of the ten priced under 6.0 compared to one that I can see last season - Michu.

When you consider that there are five under 6.0 in this season's top ten and that's without Barkley and Brady, I think it definitely suggests the template is likely to be stronger this season.

Surely you don't pay £30m + wages for a player just to stop another team having him? They can't afford to do that with FFP now in force.

Similar to the Lamela situation it seems. You'd think he has to come in at some point although in Chelsea's case they've paid a lot for the person he'd be replacing too.

I understand buying a player early is wise as it allows you to gain team value, but surely if the player is a short term fix, waiting benefits you as you lose less from the sale? Am I missing something? 🙂

          Nah.

Say you have 8 to start with, You buy Lukaku early this week at 7.7, he rises to 8.1 on Saturday night of the next g/w, then he gets injured and you want to sell him. You end up with 7.9 from his sale, plus the 0.3 million you didn't spend on him, meaning 8.2 million to spend on the replacement.

Instead, say you buy him at 8, using all your cash. You then get 8 when you sell him (at 8.1), and have just that 8 to spend on the replacement. Sure you lost less "value" on him, but you also gained less sale value.

Doosra! (Exact repost of my comment from a few days ago)

ROONEY TO LUKAKU IS A GOOD MOVE.

Doos I completely disagree about your opinion of Rooney for the next few fixtures, I don't care if they are at home. This is because in terms of threat and creativity in the last two games (using stats) both Rooney and RVP are destroyed by options such as Lukaku, Sturridge, Suarez & probably Remy (haven't checked the last one). Your table is based on season long form but it takes no realistic account of his recent form - which has been woeful. Southampton have a set up where they have two good defensive players in front of another 2 good CBs and a great shot stopper. Rooney and RVP will find it hard to score from open play due to the fact we (I'm a United fan) have nobody to link the play or dominate the midfield - Kagawa starting would change things significantly for the better imo but I bet he won't start. Then we have Stoke, this game could very well be a far better one for Rooney but even if he gets a goal or two, Lukaku will have smashed Hull and will be doing the exact same thing to Villa that week.

Saving money isn't a big deal if you're upgrading quality wise and I really do believe Lukaku for now is a much better commodity than Rooney on FPL. I am a HUGE Rooney fan and really really hyped him up on my player analysis post, if anything I am biased towards him. But yes I do really feel he's worth a hit (I did it as a FT but would happily have done it for a hit). If you captain Lukaku I think the possible reward FAR outweighs the risk.

I've been hearing a lot of this and simply don't buy it. Huddlestone and Livermore (a while ago someone made a post revealing Hull are much improved defensively since they signed) simply won't be able to protect their defence for the fact that Everton play with plenty of width. Lukaku will of course be able to handle the two CB.

I am willing to hold my hands up and say this could definitely backfire on me via a Rooney FK/goal from a corner but I think if it does happen I will have been really unlucky and some glaring chances go amiss. E.g. I brought in Suarez for CPL and captained him, Sturridge hit the post when Suarez teed him up and Moses hit the bar from a Suarez cross.

Your point earlier about how Southampton are strong through the middle really isnt an issue as Utds attacking threat will be coming from the flanks. Its been a long time since we concentrated attack centrally.

Despite this with pools fixtures turning nasty from now till January it makes more sense to have both Rooney and Lukaku in your team. The better move might be studge to lukaku but it takes a brave man to do it considering his form.

No i think the latter have more potential simply because you'd expect Arsenal, City and Chelsea all scoring 2 goals, than Arsenal scoring 4 or 5 and the others blanking.

Obviously it also depends on the players but none of the Arsenal mids, apart from Walcott, look great value to me

When I first started playing this game I thought "I'm never taking hits, why would you do that!?". But recently I have started to think that curtailed use of the well thought out, and occasional hit is actually vital to getting one up on your rivals.

Hits... I have taken two so far this season which have both been brilliant gambles. The first one was for GW6 to bring Suarez in immediately. I swapped Benteke and Ben Arfa for Arnautovic and Suarez. For that to pay off there wasn't much of a gamble involved. Essentially I just needed Suarez to score 4 more than Ben Arfa for it to pay off. I captained Suarez and got a week saving 26 points out of him. The second one I am more proud of. I swapped out Zabaleta and Danny Graham for Clyne and Lukaku. I was going to wait due to Lukaku's difficult game with Man City approaching. But with Lukaku's price rising I had to act now or never. In order for this hit to pay off, Lukaku would have to score 4 more than Zabaleta, who he was by chance playing that weekend. All that had to happen was Lukaku to score, which he did.

My point is leading to a series of questions eventually! What are the biggest risks you have taken regarding hits? Have they paid off? What are the worst and best hits that you have taken?

Well said mate,i have taken four hits so far this season all -4 pointers and 3 of them have worked out well favourably so far,i do not fear taking hits at all at the moment. .

    Dullards everywhere.

Other strikers to consider over the template:

    1. RVP - The champions WILL find form, they have too much quality.

    2. Lambert - Down to 7.4m, proven FPL pedigree, in a much improved team. Set-pieces, pens

    3. Soldado - Another quality player still adapting to the Premier League. Stats suggest an explosion is imminent.

    4. Altidore - New manager effect? 6.5?

    5. Berahinho - Anticipate lots of pricey midfielders coming good? Then this £4.5m West Brom striker might be your man.

    6. Remy - A quality player in fine form. Extraordinary pace, fixtures a little dodgy.

    7. Aguero - He burned me last season so I refuse to comment. You all know his quality, a very strong option.

    8. Negredo - He seems to have established himself as a regular and has ousted Dzeko from the frontline. City are starting to pick up form, and he is central to Pelegrinni's attacking side. 9.3m

    9. Benteke - Soon... ish.

I am tempted by Negredo, but i'm fine with Rooney, Suarez & Giroud at the minute, until Walcott is back at least.

        Negredo is on my watchlist.

City will be around the top spots near the end of the season, there should be plenty of goals available for him.

Accounting and finance degrees are a joke and so easy they're worthless. Either go down a chartered route - CIMA/ACCA etc. Or go for the other one - although I suspect tbat one won't be very challenging either.

    Mignolet
    Terry, Dawson, Coleman
    Ozil, Michu, Oscar, Toure
    Sturridge, Benteke, Lukaku

    (Davis, Janusaj, Clyne, Ward)
