We continue the countdown to the new Gameweek with the regular refresh of the Watchlist rankings – our take on player recommendations for the next four to six week period. First up, we cast an eye over Goalkeepers and Defenders as Swansea’s rearguard earn promotion, along with the Fantasy royalty within Everton’s back four. As always, our current rankings are available in your sidebar. Read on for the thinking behind the very latest.

The Goalkeepers

Swansea’s Michel Vorm climbs to the top of the Goalkeeper rankings with a potentially profitable run of games ahead. Three home fixtures (SUN, WHM, STO) and trips to Cardiff and Fulham in the next five should give Michael Laudrup’s side plenty chance of recovery after their loss at Southampton. Injury doubts still linger over the likes of both Ashley Williams and Ben Davies in the back-four and that could impact on Swansea’s clean sheet potential. Similarly, Europa League fatigue could also play a part but that’s not likely to bite until Gameweek 11’s home encounter with Stoke which follows a trip to Russia for Matchday 4. Despite these caveats, if Williams can be restored to the Swans’ defence, Vorm should be in line for profit from now up until the end of October to reward investors.

Simon Mignolet drops down to second due to a combination of Vorm’s kinder fixtures and Liverpool’s recent downturn in resilience. Having started the season with three successive clean sheets, the Merseysiders have now conceded in each of their last four – nevertheless, as the only backline option to have played every game under Brendan Rodgers, Mignolet will be looking to take advantage of three favourable fixtures in the next four.

Brad Guzan is this week’s big climber due to a schedule that hands Villa four home games in the upcoming six. With two clean sheets in the last three, the 5.0 priced stopper is already eight points clear of any Villa defender thanks to his heroics between the sticks. The form keeper in the FPL, Guzan should provide ample save points should the shut-outs dry up. As we’ll see, however, there are options in the Villa back four that also hold appeal.

Chelsea’s Petr Cech also has a quartet of home fixtures in six to boost his chances of defensive returns. The Blues are second only to Southampton for goals conceded this season so far – Cech has been beaten just four times. However, with a trio of goal threats amongst Jose Mourinho’s back-four, he’s likely to be overlooked by many in favour of a Blues defender. Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny has four favourable fixtures in six but with just a single clean sheet to their name this term, Arsenal have been far from convincing at the back.

Artur Boruc and Hugo Lloris tumble in this week’s refresh. With four away games in six, Boruc, in particular, looks hard pushed to maintain the resilience which has seen him beaten just twice this term – trips to United, Arsenal and Chelsea, in addition to a midlands derby against Stoke at the Britannia, may see his owners contemplate an alternative. Lloris will still be licking his wounds after the Gameweek 7 home thrashing by West Ham and has Everton, United and City to follow – with goal threats and bonus potential in both the Saints and Spurs back-fours, save points could be their main source of profit.

With a single clean sheet in five, United’s David De Gea has failed to justify our faith as United struggle to gel under David Moyes. The Spaniard’s security of starts keeps him in our thinking, as does three home games in four, albeit one of those fixtures has Arsenal roll up to Old Trafford. John Ruddy and Asmir Begovic prop up this week’s rankings – with one clean sheet in the last four apiece, neither have offered much to shout about in recent matches but both have three strong home games in the upcoming six to make amends.

At the budget end of the market, Hull City’s Allan McGregor offers a 4.5 alternative to Southampton’s Boruc: he has form, although trips to Everton and Spurs up next look unlikely to see his recent run of returns maintained. Given the schedule, those shopping for a new stopper should consider the extra spend on either Vorm or Guzan in order to seek out a secure starter and potential differential.

The Defenders

Leighton Baines rises to the summit this week in light of Everton’s kind run of opponents – starting with this weekend’s Goodison clash with Hull City. The Toffees have four home fixtures supplemented by trips to Villa and Palace in the next six to aid a return to form after losing their unbeaten record at City last time out – Baines’ attacking potential and propensity for picking up bonus points justifies his lofty price tag in our estimations and has him ranked above team-mate Seamus Coleman.

Branislav Ivanovic is, perhaps controversially, our Chelsea defender of choice. The Serbian may have been overshadowed by John Terry in recent weeks but remains a greater goal threat than his skipper – with David Luiz also in the mix, though, there’s plenty on offer at the back for those eyeing up Jose Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of a superb run which sees them take on eight of the bottom 10 in the next 11 Gameweeks. It’s hardly a break from the template defence but it’s difficult to justify going without a Chelsea defender for the next six given their potential at both ends of the pitch.

Swansea’s schedule and current injury situation is enough to warrant Chico’s top billing amongst Michael Laudrup’s backline. Highlighted in Part One of our recent Members articles on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points System, the centre-half looks likely to benefit if his side can nullify their opponents’ threat. At 5.0, he’s your option should you push back on Vorm between the sticks.

Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen falls from last week’s summit. While three of the next four look profitable, City and United in Gameweeks 12 and 13 are far from enticing – nonetheless, the Belgian remains our favoured route into a Spurs backline that had, until the previous Gameweek, shipped just two goals. Vertonghen has accrued bonus points in every match his side has kept a clean sheet and offers a greater chance of attacking points than any of his defensive team-mates. Kyle Walker, at 6.1 and rising, remains the most viable alternative.

Nathaniel Clyne’s budget price tag keeps him in the mix in spite of Southampton’s tricky away trips in the next six, while Nemanja Vidic gets the nod as our United defender. Patrice Evra runs him close after an impressive showing against Sunderland last time around. The left-back has seen a recent drop to 6.4 in the FPL and could soon displace Vidic as the optimum route into Moyes’ back four should we see further rotation of the Serb and more attacking intent from the Frenchman following his assist in the win at the Stadium of Light. United’s defensive form remains a concern, although the next three – against Southampton, Stoke and Fulham – looks to provide a platform for recovery.

Everton’s enticing run of games brings Seamus Coleman into consideration as a cheaper alternative to Baines – the right-back will be hoping to improve upon a record which has seen him fail to produce any attacking returns since the season opener. Stoke’s Marc Wilson offers a cheaper alternative to his mid-priced defensive team-mates and is looking to prosper from this season’s central midfield berth. To be honest, this was a close call with Robert Huth’s goal threat almost seeing the German earn Watchlist recognition.

Further down, Ron Vlaar’s security of starts and ability to steer clear of injury earns him the nod as our Villa defender. While Guzan’s save points have proved more valuable thus far, Vlaar is available for 4.4 in the FPL – the only defender below the 4.5 price point who looks secure and with four home fixtures in six. Antonio Luna offers another assured alternative in the Villa ranks for just 0.1.

Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny returned to full training for France yesterday and has recovered after last week’s injury worry – the centre-half edges out fellow Arsenal man Per Mertesacker here, whilst three road trips in four may prove problematic for Pablo Zabaleta, given that City have conceded three goals in two of their three away games so far.

Jose Enrique’s switch to the left of Liverpool’s midfield in a 3-5-2 keeps him bubbling under in the rankings but he’s suffered a drop this week in light of the fixture list and doubts on his security of starts. Aly Cissokho’s return from injury could increase the competition for places on the Reds left, whilst Glen Johnson’s imminent comeback would also give us a cheaper differential option on the opposite flank for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Enrique remains a factor, then, but look for Johnson’s arrival next week should he figure at Newcastle.

If you’re intent on shopping at the very bottom of the budget brackets, then the Hull pairing of Liam Rosenior and Abdoulaye Faye remain the most worthy options at 3.9 apiece – we’re not expecting their recent form to continue given they have two away trips up next, while James Chester’s impending return will cause a shake-up, with Faye most likely to make way. Crystal Palace have three in the next four at home, bringing Joel Ward into consideration, while Carlos Cuellar, at just 4.1, could be a benefactor of Gus Poyet’s arrival if he can regain his Sunderland starting berth.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I brought Januzaj as a punt, some cover that might get me some lucky points if one of my choice midfield is bench but now I have a dilemma, should I play:-

    A) Januzaj (SOU)
    B) Erikson (avl)

Sensible is Erikson but Januzaj is kinda tempting despite the defensive form of SOU.

If you could afford leaving Vidic -> Clyne for another week, I think Collins&HBA -> Terry&Silva is worth the hit. I definitely would not take hit for bringing a player to my bench. But then again, I'm not leading the overall league, so what do I know.

....not that I would be proud for my table position, it would sadden me if I didn't know how much things can change from here to GW38. Still easily possible to finish in top 1000.

That last part makes a lot of it. Good choice of captain is a big matter, it's really what makes the difference. I had awful team last season but lead my minileague for some 15 rounds with basically just good captain selection almost each round. When I gave it up, I had a string of really bad captains, and particularly missed some of the biggest hitting captains (I recall vividly choosing Cazorla over Walcott against Newcastle, which was the round when I knew I lost my chances to regain the top spot).

I've had awful captains so far too. My best was Dzeko GW2, which is not massive but okay. On most GW's my captain has given me a 2-4 point performance, whilst my vice captain has had a field day. On fast count I would have 22 more points if I had each round picked my (v) as (c).

          b) Nolan -> Amalfitano
          c) Save the transfer

          a) is a definite risk, but with 2 decent home fixtures (SOT, STO) it could be a decent short term one, and if it all goes wrong I could easily switch to Amalfitano/Brady in GW10. [Plan for GW9 is Mirallas -> Walcott]

          Boruc
          Baines, Terry, Zabaleta
          Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan
          Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

Sorry for the delay chaps - if I get Barkley then I can't afford Walcott next week. Also means I can't get Lukaku easily in the future as would already have 3 EVE.

HBA > Paulinho and save a FT to upgrade defence next week?

          Boruc / Lewis
          Vidic / Walker / Coleman / Chester / Whittaker
          Michu / Ozil / HBA / Moses / Whittingham
          Rooney / Giroud / Sturridge

            A differant perspective :
            Rooney or Giroud > Lukaka
And gives you Barfa > Wally

I thought about that option, but don't want to lose Rooney or Giroud just yet. Giroud's stats with Walcott in the side are pretty impressive! Might do Ozil > Walcott when he's back.

If I'm honest I'm not gone on Paula , I have Eriksen and don't want either , I think it's Siggy or no one for me, (rotation issues tho)
On the other hand I would love Oscar but will he play this week ?
There's also a chance Hba may play v pool and could easily score but I've my reservations that he plays ,
In one respect it feels like a transfer for the sake of it ?
If Paulinho is a short term punt id look elsewhere Fuml.

It's just for that price there isn't much other than the three Spurs mids. I'd like Oscar, but I'm also worried if he'll start this weekend. HBA isn't picking up points even when he is playing, so I definitely want rid.
It might seem like a transfer for the sake of it, but with 2 FTs, I feel I need to use one as I won't get it back.
I might downgrade HBA to Barkley and make two upgrades next week.

Has to be within your budget, so no dream defensives.

Last season someone introduced the concept of the Dullardhino - an FPL manager who plays conservatively but with added inspiration. This season, with many managers working to the usual FFS orthodoxies and not doing very well so far, perhaps it might pay to be a Casualino - do the obvious things like those who we refer to as casuals, but do them better. If you can't beat them, it may be better to join them!

ok here goes.. thoughts on this england set up..

          Hart

          Cahill Jagielka
          Johnson Jones Baines

          Gerrard Wilshere

          Barkley

          Rooney Walcott

this is something iv thought about for years now playing 3 centre halves with 2 wing backs rids england of the age old problem of who to play on the left hand side.. we hav seen scholes gerrard joe cole asked to play there over the years not to mention ashley young.. screw that.. we all know about baines going forward and his delivery and as a wing back would be given more license to show it.. phil jones in this system would be also be a third centre half but with also with a freedom to bring the ball out from the back and give more protection to wilshere and gerrard in midfield 2 who will bring a great balance with one being right footed the other left.. barkley for me has the potential to take this england team and the world cup by the balls much like gazza at italia 90 imo.. and finally maybe a controversial decision here but with the width being provided by the marrauding johnson and baines walcott will play through the centre along side rooney his pace in behind alone would give england something that would genuinely frighten the biggest teams imo..

anyway just a few ideas and about 15 mins of my life wasted as woy will no doubt roll up to brazil in the searing heat with old man lamps and gerrard in midfield in a 4-4-2 and get pissed on..

Looks decent on paper, but the opposition would absolutely dominate possession, and Gerrard and Wilshere will be knackered. Not to mention Rooney no doubt having to fill in and Walcott being left isolated. This would then mean we wouldn't be able to go forward, and have no attacks.

To be honest we would get dominated in possession stats against any half decent side regardless of formation.

well said.. phil jones would be key in this system essentially a centre half but great abilty on the ball and with a license to get forward and give an extra man in midfield meaning rooney would not have to drop back

phil jones would have license in this formation to join the midfield when england are in possesion to give them an extra man and help to protect the midfield and other bentre halves when not in possesion its pretty much the same system liverpool are rolling out at the minute but with a ball playing centre half

game of opinions mate.. and with respect the 4-3-3 u presented the other night containing lampard gerrard and carrick in midfield would get trampled all over in the heat in brazil.. its 2013 time to move on

If the midfield has any chance of holding the ball, Baines and GJ would need to be pushed up most of the time leaving the backline vulnerable to wide attacks. Try it on FIFA 🙂

not sure what fifa has to do with anything but anyway.. its pretty much a carbon copy of the system liverpool have adopted recently.. the difference being phil jones would be given license to bring the ball out and be an extra man in midfield too..

Even with the wing backs giving width there is still a need to spread the attackers at the front or they'll take eachothers space around the box. In this kind of formation my team for the WC would be:

            Hart

            Jones - Jags - Dawson

            Walker - Wilshere - Carrick - Baines

            Sturridge - Rooney - Welbeck

A solid and reliable captain strategy would be to pick one player and leave it on them the entire season unless they're out injured. Put the armband on Suraez/Sturridge and you'll be amply rewarded with huge points hauls & bonus points and will move swiftly up the table. Nerve and Patience are required.

I know you shouldn't plan transfers too far in advance as injuries/suspension can cause them to unravel, but can't help myself... Hopefully save my next 2FTs and do Zabaleta/Paulinho/Rooney > Walker/Walcott/Benteke for GW11 onwards. Just need one of the laters to fall 0.1 and I'll be golden! Would give me:

          Mignolet | Boruc
          Coleman - Terry - Walker | Clyne - Chester
          Barkley - Michu - Walcott - Silva | Whittingham

OK. Need a little help with final WC tweaks.

          Who to choose over:-

          Kolarov & Chico
          or
          Johnson & Vlaar
          or
          Koscielny & CHico

          Additional info:-

I am planning on having Michu and Hernandez so Chico makes 3 swans.
I like the odd punt but not too many but happy to have 1 per position
My other defenders are:- Terry / Clyne / Coleman (Keepers Boruc and either Speroni or McGregor)

          Thanks in advance!

Whilst the favourite in my head was Kolarov and Chico as it's a little more gambley and does fit the fixtures ok. (In my head Kolarov would be a number 4 defender so the anxious wait for team news won't be as bad)

Got Mirallas, Eriksen and Rooney.. Swapping any of them for Oscar, Barkley or Lukaku has tempted me all week but i've finally decided to just keep them for the next 2 games atleast.. Surely it'd be madness to get rid of any of them with those fixtures. May finally have 2 frees next week!

If your not getting Lukaku now you'll have to pay more for him next week and potentially miss out on more goals this weekend. If Roo blanks again then you'll regret saving the transfer.

          Best move here?

          a) Nolan -> Januzaj
          b) Nolan -> Amalfitano
          c) Nolan -> Barkley
          c) Save the transfer

          a) is a definite risk, but with 2 decent home fixtures (SOT, STO) it could be a decent short term one at least, and if it all goes wrong I could easily switch to Amalfitano/Brady in GW10. Plan for GW9 is Mirallas -> Walcott if I go with a) or b) - will be 0.1m short of this if I get Barkley this week (and will also be unable to get Lukaku easily as I'll have max EVE coverage), so that is putting me off him a little.

          Boruc
          Baines, Terry, Zabaleta
          Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan
          Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

          Davis, Ravel, Toure, Ward
          Bank 0.4m

I'd save the transfer. Nolan at home is capable of scoring and he's an old stager so won't be in awe of Man City...in fact he'll probably up his game for the occasion. Two frees the following week could be great.

Cheers - I just wish Nolan had some decent stats to make me believe he could pull in the big scores of old. I think he is almost certainly a sell right now, but with Amalfitano having a tough couple of fixtures he could definitely wait, and with the issues of getting Barkley (above) that only leaves Januzaj as potentially worth it this week.

Do you thing Nolan -> Januzaj (SOT, STO) then -> Amalfitano/Brady is a decent play, or a waste of a transfer?
