City’s attack scream for our attention. Wenger’s rotation delivers a mere glancing blow. United look reliant on their young protégée. Another piece is added to Tottenham’s midfield puzzle. Here’s the lessons learned from the Gameweek 8 weekend.

Silva and Aguero have arrived…
West Ham had no answer to the City pairing on Saturday evening. The guile, movement and trickery of City’s attacking duo, along with the presence of Yaya Toure, wrestled control of the game and allowed Silva and Aguero to torment and kill off their opponents. In Fantasy terms, these two have arrived on our radars in a big way. Aguero has seen more transfers in than any other Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward in the Gameweek but, by comparison, Silva continues to be ignored. With Toure established in many lineups, Mesut Ozil so popular and a cast of performing low-to-mid price assets on show, it’s perhaps understandable. However, with goals seemingly on tap for City and Silva integral to most of their attacks – there’s a major differential on offer.

So has the “false nine”…
What do you do when you don’t have a centre-forward? You simply don’t play one. We’ve saw both West Ham and Newcastle deploy 4-6-0 systems this weekend, with Hatem Ben Arfa deployed as the most central attacker against Liverpool, while Sam Allardyce again allowed Ravel Morrison and Mo Diame license to attack from central areas against City having trialled the system in the 3-0 win at Spurs. Will it boost these players’ opportunity for Fantasy points? Maybe in the case of Ben Arfa – at least he’s on the pitch and contributing, after a return to the Magpies XI. It’s Sunderland up next this weekend, against a defence that melted away when faced with the Swansea tide. It remains to be seen if Alan Pardew feels the need to flood the midfield against the Black Cats. With Lee Cattermole and Cheick Tiote on the pitch, Ben Arfa might be better off hugging the touchline.

We got away with the first bout of Wenger’s rotation…
Yes, Aaron Ramsey returned double figures in the FPL once again but let’s not forget, were it not for Mathieu Flamini’s double vision, the Welshman may been limited to a ten-minute cameo. We shouldn’t overlook that Arsene Wenger took the decision to rest Ramsey ahead of the Champions League showpiece with Dortmund. That not only indicated just how important Ramsey has become to the Arsenal cause but also highlights how many options Wenger has at his disposal now that Santi Cazorla has returned. Wenger has warned us that the rotation will continue. Let’s agree now to take it on the chin when it arrives.

Gus Poyet Has a Job On His Hands….
The Sunderland heads looked to drop as soon as Swansea earned the advantage at the Liberty. Following that opener, it was one-way traffic with the only surprise the fact that Michu didn’t crash the party with a goal in the 4-0 win. Poyet looked to make his mark on the teamsheet with changes but clearly faces an epic task to lift the spirits and the resolve at the Stadium of Light. We wondered if we could possibly cash in on the “Poyet effect” with some cheap or mid-price differential assets – from Saturday’s showing, it would appear that’s unlikely, at least for now. It’s the Tyne-Wear derby up next for Poyet – that gives him an early opportunity to win over the fans; or perhaps lose them forever just two games in. I can’t help think this is not the Premier League “challenge” Poyet would have wanted.

You can add Townsend to the Spurs midfield mix…
It was written in the stars that Andros Townsend would cap his fortnight with England with a goal for Spurs. When it arrived, it was fortunate and also ironic that, given that Townsend has fired in shots from range all season, it took a crossed ball attempt for him to notch his first league goal.

Fantasy managers have suddenly woken up to his potential – only Ozil has seen more transfers in the Gameweek so far, as we scramble to the latest Tottenham midfield asset in hope that this is “the one” that will emerge as the key candidate. With Christian Eriksen benched, Gylfi Sigurdsson under pressure with both Aaron Lennon and Erik Lamela available, it looks a straight tussle between Townsend and Paulinho.

The price tag of 5.6 has obvious appeal and, while there’s long-term doubts his starting role, Townsend’s form is strong enough to see him rise to that challenge. Can he find consistent returns to justify a spot as a fourth midfielder, though? Or, at just 5.6, is he being brought in as a bench option on rotation?

The Spurs midfield continue to provide more questions than answers this season. It was so much easier when Gareth Bale was about.

Moyes needs Januzaj…
I’m certain that Adnan Januzaj will be “managed” carefully by David Moyes. That we’ll see times when he’ll be kept from the cauldron and introduced late on to influence matches. Right now, however, Moyes needs the spark provided by the 18-year-old as his side continues to grind through matches without the fluidity and verve of their Manchester rivals.

It’s good news for Januzaj and certainly those who have taken a punt on the 4.9 midfield prospect. It remains to be seen if he is given Champions League pitch time – start on the bench on Wednesday and we can be pretty certain that we’ll see him face Stoke at Old Trafford. It seems unlikely that Moyes will risk turning back to the inconsistencies of Ashley Young on the left flank when his team is already struggling to cling to their title ambitions.

Pochettino won’t help Lambert make the plane to Rio…
We’ve seen Rickie Lambert sacrificed before and so it proved at Old Trafford on Saturday. Once a sound mid-price investment up front, he’s slipped dramatically in our thinking, not least because the heavy-hitting form strikers have become so established. Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to sacrifice the striker in order to flood the midfield inflicted further damage and has us set on Adam Lallana as the one source of attacking points within a hugely-improved Saints lineup. You have to feel for Lambert, however. In a make-or-break season that will decide if he gets the opportunity to play a World Cup, his chances look slim as he struggles for form with his regular Southampton starting role in question.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Okay, happy with defence, happy with attack, for moment happy with GK's, but midfield a little worry:

Amalfitano, Michu, Whittingham, Ramsey and Mata.

While I think Ramsey will be a rotation worry that I have to do something about, his time is not just yet as Walcott will miss the next match. Wittingham and Amalfitano are sure starters who get points when their teams score and Michu is goals waiting to happen.

But Mata... he has everything, the class, the role, the fixtures, and yet... he is currently a 9.6M hole in my budget. What to do with him? Should I sell now? Who to bring in in his stead? Or should I still wait to see if he destroys City?

Walcott not starting next week, I would rather then keep Mata for another week and keep the free transfer. Silva will play Chelsea away after an away match in CL, which will be tough. I don't expect City to score in that game. Santi is an option, but wouldn't Özil be just a tad better one?

Theo is not sure to start ever yet. And also this possessive Arsenal might not fit him. I'm going to watch him for at least one match before jumping the bandwagon. I can afford Özil, have 2.9M in bank and Mata for 9.6M. Money no problem when I transfer Mata out. Of course, I don't want to spend too much, because at some point I might have to upgrade cheap players like Lukaku and Boruc.

Arsenal fixtures take a turn down soon, so I'm not enthusiastic about having 3 Arse-players. If I'll bring in Walcott or Özil, then either Ramsey or Giroud must go. More likely Ramsey, since Giroud is nailed on striker with great delivery.

9 out of 13 goals conceded by Crystal Palace in their 7 games so far are scored by the strikers. Its a clear indication that strikers do well against them.

If there ever will be a week to captain Giroud aka Donkey, this is the week. He is due a goal and will get atleast 1.

Giroud is NOT a donkey. Does anybody actually watch games closely. ets take the last game in isolation, his touch for his first assist was perfection, now to his second one. The cross was a peach, but people miss the vital bits. Watch a re run. He makes a false run towards goal then retreats back leaving himself unmarked, one touch, and a sublime cross. He is a very cultured footballer!

His positioning, as I always say, is absolutely top drawer. His touch, his awareness, all really excellent qualities. The problem is he is deemed a striker and therefore expected to be a sublime finisher when, going by all we know statistically, he is extremely wasteful. He often works so hard to get into great positions only to mess up what should be a pretty okay finish for a pro football player. Heading is the one area (much like Chamakh) that his finishing is a bit above average, shooting is pretty far below.

It's funny seeing as Torres has been derided for not finishing well even though his role at Chelsea has often been to make runs (and therefore drag defenders and create space for the midfield), nice passes, nice build up etc.

Arsenal right now play similar to a Bara approach. Would be interested to see how many attempts on target per chances he has ha this season. One clear chance yesterday which again he took sweetly, drew a top save from the keeper. Kind of another and intersting area we are drifting into. My initial point is regars tags that become attached to players without being questioned.

Oh I agree about your initial point, I've had a number of years defending Torres for playing a similar kind of pass about and set up style (which only now people are realising is what Chelsea ask him to do. No coincidence that none of their strikers are their leading scorers.)

As for shooting, the stats I had before this GW said he has taken a total of 27/28 shots this season with 8 of them being on target. But as you say, that's a different area.

But his finishes are sublime! What he lacks is actually that "statistical" mind of going for a probable finish. Instead, he tries finishes that, if succeed, are impossible for a GK. You should watch him before calling him awkward finisher. Almost each of his goals this season is a freaking beauty. Take the inside-the-box one touch lob over the Australian GK, or the finish with his plant foot against Spurs. He mentioned in an interview that he tries that one touch lob time to time and when it fails it goes over the goal and everybody says it's awful. But it's an extremely difficult move that is impossible for the GK to save. It's not perhaps statistically wise to try that often, but it's also not a mark of him lacking skill. He should go to Thomas (or Gerd) Müller's school of scoring to learn to make a sure shot that is likely to get you the goal instead of always trying to make it 100% sure with an extremely difficult effort. That's all.

For another kind of statistic: see the ratio with which he converts his on target shots. Impressive. Now go and check them. There is no amount of good luck or bad goalkeeping, they are plain impossible to stop.

All that aside, the point of donkey-discussion is that Giroud's passing, shooting, link-up play, all that proves immense technical ability, and donkeys are defined by lack of it. So he is not a donkey.

    Currently:

    Mignolet / McGregor
    Johnson / Baines / Rangel / Shaw / Wilson
    Ravel / Michu / Amalfitano / Arnautovic / Ramsey
    Rooney / Giroud / Suarez

Thinking Arnautovic to Brady this week, followed by Ravel to Silva and Rooney to Benteke next week. At the moment that would leave me with 0.0 in the bank so it depends on prices being stable (though Ravel going up would be nice).

If you've kept Hernandez this long it seems a bit of a shame to ditch him now with his upcoming fixtures. That is assuming, of course, he ever gets fit. I think he was only supposed to be out for one or two gameweeks but has missed 6. He's on my watchlist to bring in if he starts playing.

Don't be afraid of hits, the odd -4 can (and I repeat can) work wonders, I have spent a few points this season and most have paid off.

What are the chances of Everton finishing above Man Utd this season??

I currently have 3 everton players (Coleman, Barkley, Lukaku) and RVP - debating whether to get rid of RVP or Coleman/Barkley next. Everton's players look great value this season.

If Everton finish top 4 and qualify for the champs league or win a cup this season then Martinez will do in his first season what Moyes couldnt manage in over 10. It seems amazing to me that when Martinez was appointed there were fans who werent keen on him, i wonder what they are thinking now?

      Bit harsh on Moyes this.

He's took over a team that Moyes built on a shoe string and I think most level heade people would agree did a great job with on a tight budget.

Not to take away anything from Martinez, but without Moyes he wouldnt have such a great squad to do well with.

Is anybody getting so fearful of rest/rotation/chance of injury for CL that they are starting to pick players from the teams involved with a greater sense of trepidation than ever? It seems hardly any of the big boys are exempt from missing a fixture - I've got burned with Zabaleta this week and many will have sweated with Ramsay to name but one. It is hard to find anyone 'untouchable' - Giroud perhaps is one that stands out.

What has changed for me this season is the quality available outside of CL - Liverpool, Everton and more recently Southampton offer great options (at the back for sure - look at the top 12 top points scoring defenders - only Terry is CL and he is not playing international football and is as nailed on as anyone can be). I now have my full quota of 9 from these clubs. Throw in Benteke and Remy to name a few and you have plenty more non-CL options.

Europa league is a slightly different beast - Swansea and Tottenham at least up until recently have been fielding almost B team squads. I think they feel they have plenty enough depth to get out of their groups with their squad power. Also I think they may well get qualified for the next stage quite quickly and have a couple of meaningless games towards the end to allow even further rest for their stars. The CL teams won't get the option I doubt - too much quality at that level - so the dangers of missing a Prem game are greater. Having said this the Spurs midfield is now a minefield to pick from and I am now watching Eriksen v Hull with a view to getting rid.

The following side takes it to the extreme but I think food for thought...and makes that midweek watching a bit more comfortable...

    Boruc
    Johnson Baines Terry (an exception)
Lallana, Michu, Coutinho (when fit), Barkley
    Suarez Benteke Lukaku
