While expectations were modest, tonight’s Selhurst Park encounter brought a close to the Gameweek and provided a showcase for an array of budget and mid-price talent, whilst also serving up a goal of rare quality.

The Game Changer

Having struck a true goal of the season contender, the night has to belong to Pajtim Kasami. His winning header on the opening day at Sunderland saw the Swiss midfielder emerge as an unlikely budget favourite. Having blanked in his last four starts, tonight’s stunning volley will have re-ignited that early season interest.

Priced at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Kasami could offer a true alternative to the likes of Ravel Morrison and United’s Adnan Januzaj. Having started seven of eight league matches, his place in Martin Jol’s lineup has looked assured – his returns perhaps stifled to this point by Fulham faltering form.

Tonight’s convincing victory might signal a change and bring Kasami to the fore as a viable option as a fifth midfielder to free up funds for the big guns. Long-term, Jol’s plentiful options on the flank will provide stern competition. Tonight’s sublime goal offered his manager a reminder of Kasami’s potential as a special talent, however.

The Underused

Dimitar Berbatov already has fewer owners than Kasami – an extraordinary statistic when you consider that the Bulgarian is a proven goalscorer and creator of pedigree. Like Kasami, Berbatov has suffered from Fulham’s start to the season which has seen his return limited to just a single assist in his seven starts before tonight’s goal.

Having slumped to just 7.1 in price, there’s little doubt that a Berbatov, in his pomp, could prove a significant differential if acquisition can be timed with an upturn in form. With three of the toughest defences up next, that time is perhaps some way off. A run of four home matches in six from Gameweek 12 could be the window to cast an eye in Berbatov’s direction should Martin Jol’s men build on tonight’s result.

The Selection Poser

The capitulation of Ian Holloway’s defence at set-plays in the second period will ring alarm bells for those banking on the budget appeal of the Palace rearguard. Danny Gabbidon and Joel Ward are present in almost 8% of FPL squads but, on tonight’s showing, their potential, even as bench warmers, looks limited compared to fellow promoted assets at Hull City and Cardiff.

Arsenal are next to face Palace – not the fixture to help rebuild the confidence after a drubbing. There’s little doubt that many will have the armband on their Gunners’ assets come Saturday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thought I'd join in the fun of checking my captaincy scores and for extra flavour I've compared it to my theoretical best captaincy option each week. Makes for grim reading (even if some of the optimal captaincy choices would never have realistically crossed my mind)

    Actual captains

    GW1 - Hazard - 16
    GW2 - Soldado - 14
    GW3 - Silva - 6
    GW4 - Soldado - 4
    GW5 - Giroud - 4
    GW6 - Rooney - 16
    GW7 - Sturridge - 18
    GW8 - Giroud - 16

    Total - 94

    Potential captains

    GW1 - Mignolet/Ivanovic - 30
    GW2 - Sturridge/Toure - 16
    GW3 - Sturridge - 16
    GW4 - Giroud - 22
    GW5 - Mirallas - 10
    GW6 - Sturridge - 28
    GW7 - Sturridge - 18
    GW8 - Hazard - 36

    Total - 176

So that's 82 points thrown away on poor captaincy choices already and we're only in week 8!

        😆

I did an exercise at the end of one season where I worked out my best possible score for each week if I'd got every benching and captaincy decision correct. Even allowing for my sketchy transfer dealings, I'd have won the whole thing by a wide margin - it's frightening how these points slip through my fingers - I didn't manage to pick my best XI and get the captaincy right in the same gameweek all season!

Since I am doing so badly and feeling terrible negative over my team may as well:

      GW1 - Hazard - 16
      GW2 - Soldado - 14
      GW3 - Walcott- 12
      GW4 - Soldado - 22
      GW5 - Benteke - 2

      GW8 - Lukaku 4

      Total - 92

      Potential captains

      GW1 - Ivanovic - 30
      GW2 - Giroud/Toure - 16
      GW3 - Zabeleta- 24
      GW4 - Giroud - 22
      GW5 - Mignolet - 8
      GW6 - Shaw - 14
      GW7 - Suarez - 12
      GW8 - Ozil 30

      Potential score 156.

Everyone seems to think that because Palace conceded 4 last night, they will concede 10 against Arsenal at the weekend.

Spurs only scored once - a penalty
Utd scored twice - one penalty

There is also a strong likelihood of rotation, with Arsenal's tough fixture list & depth in midfield.

Iwanted to get rid of ben arfa but Sun(A) and the chance of him playing upfront surely means I have to wait another week? I have 2FT and 0m int he bank so I do need to use a transfer but everyone seems to have tasty fixtures!

    My team is currently

    Mig
    Vidic Shaw Coleman
    Ozil Barkley Michu HBA
    Rooney Giroud Suarez

    Subs: Burner Brady Chester

Wow, benching headache... would probably leave Boruc, Coleman, Kim & Collins on the bench this week, which is bound to have some points on it!

Perhaps look at off loading Toure, who I'd probably be benching the next few weeks anyway, if Rodgers doesn't do that for you... Chico seems popular round here... I went Vlaar

I'm happy with Ozil for ARS cover and have been reluctant to transfer in Ramsey... Paulinho has looked sharp so I'd keep him for this week at least.

I suppose Collins to Vlaar would give you a few more options in defence... I don't think I've ever used my 3rd sub (Jedinak) but I suppose Kim is of a similar breed!

So let's see how bad my decisions were -

    My Picks -

    1.Hazard - 16pts
    2.RVP - 4pts
    3.RVP - 2pts
    4.RVP - 12pts
    5.Giroud - 4pts
    6.Rooney - 16pts
    7.Suarez - 12pts
    8.Suarez - 20pts

    My optimal Captain points -

    1.RVP - 24pts
    2.Dzeko - 16pts
    3.Sturridge - 16pts
    4.Giroud - 22pts
    5.Barkley - 16pts
    6.Suarez - 26pts
    7.Suarez - 12pts
    8.Ozil - 30pts

So 86 points from maximum 162. Just over half. I've only made the best captain choice 1 week out of the 8 so far, not good. At least my choices seem to be improving...

Just annoying, my 'other' FPL team which I take far less time over is 70 points ahead of my 'main' team. Too much tinkering....also stubborness sticking with RVP too long.

I did Eriksen -> Oscar before the Tot game since in my league many people had Hazard and only 2 Oscar and i am already 70 pts behind the first. Now i am not sure Oscar was a good choice and am thinking of doing anything else especially since i have only Ozil as Arsenal cover. 0.1 in Bank 0 FT. Thoughts?

    Mignolet (Lewis)
    Evra, Clyne, Rangel (Coleman, Chester)
Michu, Ozil, Oscar, Whittingham (4.3 mid)

Nightmare of who to bench this week? Any thoughts appreciated!

    Mignolet (Harper)

Turner (nor), Ivanovic (MCI), Fonte (FUL), Gibbs (cry), Dawson (HUL)
Eriksen (HUL), Januzaj (STO), Ozil (cry), Michu (WHU), Morrison (swa)
Lukaku (avl), Suarez (WBA), Giroud (cry)

Let me have a go with this potential captain points as well.

    Real
    1. Hazard - 16
    2. Persie - 4
    3. Boruc - 6 (missed the deadline for this one)
    4. Persie - 12
    5. Sturridge - 4
    6. Rooney - 16
    7. Sturridge - 18
    8. Sturridge - 10

    Total: 86

    Ideal
    1. Ivanovic - 30
    2. Collins - 14
    3. Wally - 12
    4. Sturridge - 14
    5. Brady - 24
    6. Sturridge - 28
    7. Boruc - 20
    8. Ozil - 30

    Total: 172

So it's 86 v 172. Could have been a lot higher up the ranks if I had my captain choices right. Shockingly, I didn't even chose the right captain even in a single GW. I could have had 43 points more. Anyway, moving on and hoping I make better choices from now on.

Looking for a cheap downgrade (ideally below 6m) for Nolan this week to fund later upgrades.

    Options appear to be:
    a) Townsend - in form and decent short term fixtures. Rotation threat.
    b) Hernandez - good fixtures on some set pieces and should play most games. Would mean double SWA midfield
    c) Januzaj - in form and cheap. Rotation threat.
    d) Amalfitano - in form, cheap and reasonable fixtures

Which would you get and why?

    Boruc, Davis
    Baines, Terry, Toure, Clyne, Ward
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud
