With Gareth Barry escaping from Saturday’s visit of Hull with only a yellow card following his x-rated challenges on Danny Graham and Sone Aluko, it’s left to Newcastle centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to take the headlines as we review this week’s disciplinary matters.

Recruited from Montpellier last January as one of the best young centre backs in France, Yanga-Mbiwa has made an indifferent start to life in the Premier League competing with Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor for the right to partner club captain Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of the Magpies defence.

Hauled off at half-time in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton, Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded a first-team reprieve at home to Liverpool on Saturday as a result of Fabricio Coloccini’s groin injury. In the lead up to the match, Alan Pardew backed the Frenchman to step up in his captain’s absence but his impact wasn’t quite what the Magpies boss had in mind – dismissed on 39 minutes, with his side leading 1-0 against Brendan Rodgers’ troops.

Out of position and with Luis Suárez lurking on his shoulder, Yanga-Mbiwa was slow to react to a through ball from Daniel Sturridge and in challenging the livewire Uruguayan pulled him to the ground. A clear penalty and the red card for the ‘denial of a goalscoring opportunity’ (DOGSO) means Yanga-Mbiwa will now miss the crucial Tyne-Wear derby next week as he serves a one-match ban. Newcastle will be down to the bare bones at centre back with Williamson and goalscoring debutant Paul Dummett the only available pair unless Coloccini and Steven Taylor recover from their injuries in time to face the basement dwelling Black Cats.

Elsewhere on the Suspension Tightrope it was a quiet day. The sole balancing act – Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini – was robbed of his chance to rack up some minutes on the high wire after a clash of heads with robust Norwegian Alexander Tettey led to him being withdrawn with concussion after 37 minutes. To be fair, he may not have lasted long in his funambulistic foray, considering his collection of four cautions in his previous five games, but Flamini’s absence through injury instead of suspension will shake up a previously settled Arsenal midfield ahead of the midweek visit of Borussia Dortmund, and weekend trip to Crystal Palace.

In Sunday’s game at Villa Park, Flamini was joined by midfielders Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph, as the hard-pressing approach rolled out by Paul Lambert on a rain-sodden pitch saw both pick up their fourth bookings of the season. Westwood for a nasty challenge on Lewis Holtby early in the game, and Delph for a lunging slide through Andros Townsend in injury time. The Villa duo will now attempt to negotiate next week’s visit of Everton and Lambert will hope to avoid losing such an influential pairing at the centre of his Villa team.

There were also a handful more names added to the ever-growing Tightrope widget at the bottom of the side-bar –that particular pocket of miscreants now bursts at the seams, with 22 players sitting two yellow cards away from a single-match ban. With up to 11 more league games, and a handful of those still with Capital One Cup interests, keeping out of trouble until 2014 will be a tricky task. Ross Barkley, (36.9% ownership) Branislav Ivanovic (29.7%) and Michael Dawson (12.7%)are the headline protagonists, but with Jack Wilshere, Fernandinho, Chico Flores and Ravel Morrison all delivering attacking points this week, it’s an increasingly star-studded list.

Well it looks pretty good overall.

Defence is your main area to resolve. Chester, Ward I assume you only play in an emergency.

So Vidic or Zaba to someone like Glen Johnson. Also Swansea and Saints have good fixtures. Clyne or Chico?

I'd also consider Yaya to Silva now the little man's back and playing well.

Rooney to Aguero in a week's time? Though I'm going Bentekke I think.

Ben Arfa and Moses are your first considerations I think.

I like the look of Mirallas now he's found the target.

Longer term it's downgrade RVP and use the cash to improve that midfield. Silva, Michu, Oscar/Haz

Too much invested in Defence, having a 5m on the bench is crazy.

Side looks good as I assume you'll rotate Barkley and Brady and Fonte depending on fixtures?

      OK, cool.

      Migs - Lewis
      Clyne - Walker - Coleman - DECEASED - DECEASED
      Özil - Michu - Silva - Ramsey - Barkley
      Sturridge - Suarez - Lukaku

      0.7m in bank

I have some notions but not sure how to prioritise them:

Get Terry, Hazard/Oscar, Benteke, replace deceased players with living ones

Yes, need at least one living cheap defender to cover for emergencies. B Turner looks good or I have Faye who may lose his place when Chester comes back.

Ozil Michu Silva are great for now, but later I'd look at a Chelsea, possibly when Swansea's fixtures get harder.

No harm in SAS right now, but I might look at Benteke or another to replace one of them.

I'm thinking long term when I'm giving advice by the way, not just one GW.

        Generally looks good.

I'd look to replace Hangeland and Ben Davies (rotation risk).

If you're happy with the side for this GW, keep the FT and enjoy the 2 next gameweek.

Ribery only started to train again yesterday after sustain a little injury this weekend. I'm not sure if he is goinjg to start. I think that Goetze will get his fist start and then it's one out of Ribery and Robben.

I might go for Kroos as his form is immense lately.

Ok looking to bring Clyne in this week but would you sell

    a) Chester (injured but possibly back soon)
    b) Burner (nailed on but in a poor defence)
    c) Kolarov (tough fixture this week, but then 2 nice ones, but not nailed)

Also do you guys prefer Rangel/Chico to Kolarov?

Clichy is first choice, and especially against a strong Chelsea team, he wont start.

Burner has Norwich I believe, and Chester is perfect for a bench defender when fit.

Further to the discussion topics of Baine's and Michu's erratic scoring pattern, I would like to discuss how this scoring pattern effects your position in the game. It really depends on whether you are looking at the total points leagues or head to head leagues. In total points this erratic scoring can be massaged out over a period to contribute to your final ranking whereas with the weekly head 2 head battle inconsistency is not going to help one little bit. For head to head I would argue it is much better to have the steady but less explosive returns of players like silva.

You are bound to get frustrated by their lack of returns and ditch them at some point. If their returns come after you ditch them, it is totally useless.

So my question is, how long do you keep patience with such players?

You really are spoilt for choice.
I'd say definitely not Shaw, best defense in the league against a poor attack.

Flip a coin between Vidic and Chico. Perhaps see how they perform for midweek games and make a call then.

Which tactic do you believe is the best with regards to transfers and price rises.

    1) Making your transfer(s) early in the week the benefit from price fluctuations
(The benefit is that significant team vale can be achieved throughout the year; it could be the difference between being able to buy a 9m midfielder over a £6m midfielder towards the end of the season)

    2) Waiting until Friday/Saturday for the team news to be confirmed.
(The benefit is that you avoid 'knee-jerk' transfers and give yourself time to make informed decisions. I would also suggest this method reduces points hits, as Friday's team news often forced transfers, and if you've already made your transfers at the start of the week then you will be forced to take hits)

Which strategy best describes you, and which do you feel is better?

I rather do my transfers in the midweek. Especially after the UCL games. As soon as they are played, I see if my potential target played at all and if he played in good condition and came out of the match unharmed.

It depends on what week it is. With one full of important European games where most of your squad is involved then paying the price of 0.1 or 0.2 can be worth saving yourself extra transfers if your team is already a bit ropey for the next GW.

On off weeks, and early on then yes making some early ones, if you know you'll be doing them that week or next week for sure then you can make some significant savings.

I am definitely number 1 however not sure this is best. I hate losing value on players and if I know I want a player and they are due to go up mid week I will press the button and cross my fingers. Team value is important to me however I wish that the points mirrored the value a bit more often, in previous seasons it has much more than this one!

Having a team for the January wild card with value around 105-110 is certainly achievable and can really help for the run in.

Decide on moves at the start of the week and if there are price changes to benefit from make the transfers. Leave it to Saturday morning if there are no price changes relating to the transfer.

The risk of injuries messing up early transfers is massively overstated on here. For safety I'll always leave it late if prices aren't changing but I wouldn't hesitate to make transfers early if there are team value benefits, at least not until late in the season anyway.

Just for the interests of consistency and clarity I'll share this FPL response:

"Please bare in mind that OPTA provide all our statistics, and we are unable to alter any of the information provided."

"2. Eden Hazard, and not Samuel Eto'o, has been awarded the first Chelsea goal vs. Cardiff, as despite the ball appearing to deflect ever so slightly off Eto'o. Hazard's shot was on target."

I know there has to be a line somewhere when it comes to deciding who gets credit for what, but it's a fuzzy one and this might help us define it a little better.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x165xjb_chelsea-vs-cardiff-1-1-eden-hazard_sport
Click on 11 secs a few times to see the slight flick off Eto's foot

If the officials had noticed the flick it would have been given offside. The next time there's a player with more owners than Eto (I own neither btw, I was just curious what their response would be if they'd seen it) we'll be able to reference this as a precedent.

Also: 'bear in mind'. Bare in mind is asking me to imagine OPTA naked 😯
