Fixtures

Chelsea square up to a schedule that could potentially resurrect their early season form. Villa and Sunderland meanwhile, can look to their forthcoming run of opponents for consolation as they look to halt a slippery slide into a relegation dogfight. A host of other sides aren’t so lucky, facing a fixtures that curdles the milk in the half-time cuppa.

Set your Season Tickers to stun as we “Frisk the Fixtures” one more time…

The Highs…

Chelsea
If Chelsea’s next three gameweeks were a department store they’d be Harrods (minus any Michael Jackson effigies). Quite simply, they are a top of the range selection, reminiscent of the kind of run they enjoyed to open their season; we all know how that turned out (pretty darn well).

With consecutive home games against Wigan, Birmingham (this game tied to a double-gameweek trip to West Brom) and West Ham approaching, Fantasy investment in the Chelsea squad is surely going to gather pace.

Frank Lampard is probably over-priced in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at 12.9 but takes penalties and is the only heavyweight who can be relied upon to start all those matches. Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres and even Salomon Kalou are scrapping for the striking positions; take a gamble on one of those and it may well come up trumps, but it would certainly be a risk. At the back meanwhile, David Luiz will continue to rocket in price given that he is ineligible for European matches. He looks the most assured defensive choice, despite his showing at the Britannia, with a little Brazilian flair thrown in.

Sunderland
Sunderland are a bit of an enigma right now – they’ve not scored a goal in over 400 minutes, they may have lost their best defender (no really) for the rest of the season and are a point or two from the safety of the Premier League middle ground.

The fixtures, however, could not have fallen better for them. The next six games [WBA, bir, WIG, FUL, bol, WLV] look very appetising and, in ordinary circumstances, promise returns at both ends of the field. Steve Bruce’s side will need to regain a semblance of form before we can invest with any real confidence however – without that, the Black Cats are a risk.

The loss of Titus Bramble will dent credentials in the clean sheet department but the likes of John Mensah, Phil Bardsley and recent Watchlist candidate Simon Mignolet will still be contenders to consider here.

The strike pairing of penalty-taking enigma Asamoah Gyan and bargain basement loanee Danny Welbeck, are perhaps more likely to attract immediate interest – particularly if there are shoots of recovery on show against the Baggies at he weekend.

Aston Villa
Gerard Houllier’s side stick around then – still boasting a fixture list that promises to deliver an end of season sting. Their next five games [NEW, whm, STK, wba, WIG] have to be classified as one of the best run of opponents around, keeping their squad assets firmly in our mind, despite Villa’s current flirtation with relegation.

The 2-2 draw with Everton had more than a few talking points but most encouragingly for Fantasy Managers, we saw key Villa investments play their part. Darren Bent bagged both goals to flash back up on radars, while Stewart Downing and Ashley Young took it in turns to play provider. Those willing to back a defensive recovery meanwhile can of course also consider Kyle Walker – shaky on Saturday, the raiding right-back remains a steal in Fantasy terms.

Also to consider: Birmingham – a couple of moderate fixtures surround a double, followed by strong run-in to come. Blackburn – the draw at Arsenal was a much-needed boost and now the horizon looks promising; Junior Hoillett certainly presents a decent option. Blackpool – four crucial consecutive home matches will surely decide the fate of Ian Holloway’s side.

The Lows…

West Ham
The Hammers had been on the road to recovery but the nature of the 4-2 defeat to United on Saturday is a concern. The second-half collapse may well have knocked the veritable stuffing out of a West Ham side that continues to face few favours from the fixture list.

Trips to Bolton, Chelsea and Man City in the next four weeks present very sizable obstacles which will require the Hammers to regain defensive steel and for Demba Ba and Thomas Hitzlsperger to provide the quality in attacking terms. Fantasy Managers seem unlikely to throw their support behind the cause.

Stoke
The temptation with Stoke is to sit on the likes of Robert Huth and Matt Etherington for the next couple of gameweeks, with a double fixture in gameweek 34 looming. A trip to Spurs comes next, followed by a gameweek 33 blank. The double header with Villa and Wolves is the key however, and Huth owners may well hold firm with more pressing transfers required elsewhere.

The problem here is that, following the double fixture, Stoke’s prospects remain pretty glum. With Arsenal and City up next, clean sheets look unlikely and Huth will likely be required to add to his already impressive goal tally if he is to offer value. Stoke continue to impress at home and, in these games, we may see some continued attacking profit, but there appears to be far stronger potential to be found elsewhere.

Liverpool
Kenny Dalglish’s men have a faint hope of stealing fifth place and will equally do their utmost to hold off Everton’s charge up the table. The red side of Merseyside face an uneasy run-in however, and will need to maintain results in the face of some testing fixtures.

Two gameweeks at home to Birmingham and Newcastle in the middle of this period might be considered respite, but the four games around them in particular (MCY, ars, ful, TOT) are far from kind to Liverpool’s top five prospects.

Andy Caroll has gained over 160,000 new owners in recent weeks, Fantasy Managers who are clearly tipping the big centre-forward to recapture his consistent form in black and white stripes. Those considering the Geordie striker, and his supremely talented striker partner Luis Suarez, may wish to mull over the fixture list a little more before preparing investment.

Be wary of: Newcastle – Alan Pardew’s side look safe but with United at home and trips to Liverpool and Chelsea to come, the Magpies may struggle to continue their table climb. Man City – two potentially troubling away games sandwiching a blank fixture means lifeboats are being manned for a short-term Fantasy exodus.

Mark I've been having a few issues on here, not sure if anyone else is getting it. Mainly when I post comments it will just keep trying to load the page for ages and eventually just goes to a plain white screen. If I click back and reload the page then my comment has been posted fine. Also at random times the site just won't load for me, or it will give a cached version.

a draw and a win...however we didnt look like scoring in a million years against tranmere. against notts it was a late pen and another goal after the sending off which sealed it. i didnt back us to go down in the end.

Today looks like being the last of the rain.
It won't be soft on Saturday - reckon it'll be good ground on Saturday, maybe even good/firm in places by race time.

Looking at State of Play - seems to go fresh and laid out for the race having run well last two Grand Nationals. Also have a soft spot for Merigo if it makes the line-up, otherwise I'll also back Hello Bud who could lead them all the way.

Agree with the no such thing as a tip. Corbiere, Mr Frisk, Party Politics, Red Marauder and Monty's Pass are my only previous winners although some of those were decent odds. Like to think it's time again to pick the winner.

Having initially been pleased about Rooney's potential ban (having not got him in my WC team last week), im now not so sure given that my main rival has Berbatov...

I think so - he should only miss one prem game, and he looks to be hitting a bit of form, plus fixtures are quite forgiving.

This GW is giving me a headache. Can't make up my mind.

Which seems to be the best
    A) VDV/Young+Tevez to Fabs+Gyan (4point hit)
    B) VDV/Young+Tevez to Fabs+Carroll (4point hit)
    C) Young+Tevez+Defender to Fabs, Bent & P.Jones (8point hit)

Which seems to be the best. Gutfeeling is saying don't take too much hits, but C is looking really tempting going forward.

Hmmmm, not sure why you want to get rid of Young. Villas fixtures seem quite tasty right now. Also can I as why do you want Fabs right now? I'd be maybe gunning for Lamps. Is that possible for you?

In any case if this part of the season i crucial for you i'd avoid an 8pt hit.

Need to see the rest of your team.

I know a lot of people are getting rid of VDV but I'm sticking, especially with Stoke at home, if it's to get DGW players that's fair enough but I think he'll fire again soon.

The reason I am geting fabs is that I reckon Arsenal should come good from now on with a full squad and ofcourse the DGW. I think I am keeping Young ahead of VDV tbh. Thinking VDV should be this part of the seasons Drogba. Kept him too long based on previous form.

        Rest of team is:
        kingson/begovic
Kelly, Coleman, Luiz, Walker, Roger J
        Adam, Lamps, Young, Vdv, Nani
        Tevez, RVP, Zigic

        Any suggestions based on this?

    Foster Harper
    Luiz Smalling Dawson Baird Walker
    Lampard Fabregas VDV Nani Adam
    RVP Carroll Wellbeck

    This week:
    1) Foster/Harper -> Cech
    2) Nothing and do 1) next week unless a different Chelsea player emerges.

Because I took out that git in your avatar! If id have stuck I would have gonna thru, that was my original plan too.

So u reckon Cech Luiz Lamps is the way forward for Chelsea? Strikers are too unpredictable really.

Bare with me but it's probably more likely to be Foster -> Cech partly coz I save more money plus I would play Cech every week till the end bar 36 and 38 when they have tough away games and in those weeks:

        Harper has BIR & WBA
        Foster has new & tot

      UCL Fantasy:

For a 4 pt. hit(8 transfers in all),I'm contemplating bringing these guys in for the eliminated players and for Ivanovic and Nani(budget constraints):

      GK->Neuer,DF->Hubschman,Marcelo,Plestan,MF->Mikel,Diarra,Schmitz,
      ST->Ronaldo.

That will leave me with this team:

      VdS,NEUER,
      Srna,Smalling,HUBSCHMAN,MARCELO,PLESTAN,
      VdV,Bale,MIKEL,DIARRA,SCHMITZ,
      Messi,Eto'o,RONALDO.

A couple of non-starters there and a bit of a crappy midfield but have to get either Mikel and Diarra or more non-starters.Hopefully,Ronaldo will make up for the 4 pts. spent. What do you guys think?Any other useful transfer suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I am not even sure that Ron and Marcelo will start - no need to rotate keepers, VdS should be enough for both games (or at least choose a GK who plays at home this week).
All in all, I would defo keep Nani and Iva, even if it means no CRon

Have no idea who to call for the UCL the next two nights, it looks to me like Inter/Real/Barca should go through, with United and Chelsea being too close to call.

Trying to replace 5 players in fantasy team having already done Robben OUT Di Maria IN. Trying to decide whether I like Valencia over Nani (due to cost) whether I want Sneijder in there aswell, team as is is:

        Kraft (OUT)/Guaita (OUT)
        Rat/Ivanovic/Vidic/Yepes (OUT)/Miguel (OUT)
        VDV/Lampard/Di Maria/Jadsen/Pablo Hernandez (OUT)
        Eto'o/Messi/Luiz Adriano

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but apparently Charlie Adam, Samir Nasri, Gareth Bale, Nemanja Vidic, Carlos Tevez, Scott Parker have been shortlisted for the PFA player of the year award.

Bale, Parker and Adam ahead of Nani, Kompany and Modric.

Bit of a shit award, that.

If Bale wins its a joke! I'm not against Parker tbh but surely VDV has to be in with a shout even tho he's gone slightly off the boil (like most of the candiates if were honest) Mordic should defiantly be in their but I wouldn't look too far beyond Vidic.

I had an argument with some Finnish people about 'Z' not being in their alphabet- they were saying it isn't, but I wondered if that was true why two Finnish sporting greats (Zelsezny and Zapotek) had names beginning with 'Z'.

Turns out neither is actually Finnish.

Ebanks-Blake did not play often because Kevin Doyle is their no 1 striker. Now he's out for the season, Ebanks-Blake should play most games.

I went for Welbeck because of Sunderland's good fixtures, but you're really choosing between very good fixtures (Sun) and OK fixtures with a double GW (Wol).

Really tricky transfer decisions this week. Currently Chelsea-less and with Rooney, can't get Lampard AND Luiz without shifting Fabs which doesn't seem right aganist Blackpool, or taking a hit. Despite the great fixtures I almost feel mroe naked without Adam than without Lampard, may have to do without the blue fatman. It's going to be a nervous weekend either way.

Sorry to say this but I think I'm gonna have a stormer this weekend. I have Fabs, RVP, Lamps, Adam and now Berbatov looks like a key striker for the weekend 🙂

I do wonder how essential Lampard really is, it's defiitely a risk not having him but so many of the DGW tempters haven't really worked out.

It's those set pieces that freak me out, take away some of them and I wouldn't be so worried - if Drogba starts then the appeal of Lampard is slightly lessened.

Chelsea have good fixtures in addition to the DGW. At this stage of the season I guess it depends on whether you need to take risks or play safe. I'm going for it with him.

The thing is - which of the two options is taking a risk and which is playing safe? Seems to me that bringing him in is playing it safe.

Shuffling your team to afford him is part of the risk.

          Gomes (Myhill)

          Huth, Coleman, Carr, Walker, Simpson

          Nani, VDV, Nasri, Arteta, Adam

Rooney, Tevez, RVP .2 in bank

im thinking of doing huth/gomes/arteta/tevez out,
luiz/mignolet/lampard/gyan in for a 12 point hit. would leave me with 0.0 in bank so must make all transfers this week to afford luiz lamps AND gyan.

alternatives include downgrading gyan to welbeck, which would allow me to keep gomes and drop a cheaper defender instead of huth. or i could think about dumping rooney instead of tevez. everyone else i want to keep for various reasons,(DGW coming up, value defender, etc)
          Thoughts?
ive pretty much made up my mind i want to take the hit, although it could ruin me in the Last Man Standing mini league.
