Blackburn managed to tame the Premier League’s second top scorers Arsenal on home soil this weekend- frustrating Arsene Wenger’s men at the Emirates with a determined display. Although Steve Kean’s men perch just 2 points above the relegation zone, with strong confident performances like Saturday’s and a fairly promising run of fixtures to come (BIR eve MCY BOL whm MUN wol) – Rovers look likely to steer themselves out of trouble.

It is surely no coincidence that their first clean-sheet in four games corresponded with the Phil Jones’ first start since mid-December. The highly praised England U21 starlet had been on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against West Ham, but his re-emergence in the holding midfield role seems to be the calming influence that Blackburn have missed.

The combination of a newfound defensive confidence, good fixtures and a need for points, give Rovers players plenty of Fantasy potential, with Jones looking a worthy consideration once more having first caught the eye on breaking into the side early in the season.

Although listed as a defender on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Jones often plays in a deeper central midfield role. Yet to score or assist in this season, Jones is nonetheless and influential figure who has threatened the opponents goal when pushing forward. Priced at a mere 4.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Jones would slot nicely into any Fantasy defence and offers increased creativity and goal threat in a more advanced role, in addition to clean-sheet potential.

Rovers’ captain Chris Samba is certainly a big fan of Jones and what he brings to the Rovers effort…

“It is a great boost to have Jonesy back. We are going to need his enthusiasm, his character. He is a player who has that fire and never lets anything go, in any situation. He may be a young player but I think he is important for us, as are all the other young players. Now it is about who wants more to stay in this league. He is someone who works hard and never stops. He never stops running and I think he is sort who can go and make a tackle and the others will follow in his example.”

Samba is not the only one to notice Jones’ importance, the FPL Bonus Judges have thrown 9 points his way so far this term and last season, in just 9 appearances he grabbed a total of 7. The odd Bonus Point may not seem like much but, as the season draws to a close, such points can make the difference, particularly if clean sheets continue to be hard to come by within our Fantasy rearguards.

Holding an ownership of just 2.1%, Jones also offers excellent “differential” capabilities ahead of a run of three home matches in four for Rovers. While Samba (5.1) holds a higher ranking in our Watchlist with a significant goal threat, Jones is a cut-price solution that, coupled with cheap defensive options like Villa’s Kyle Walker, offers strong fixtures with a hint of attacking promise. Crucially, that helps to liberate funds for investment elsewhere in our squads at a time when double gameweek heavyweights look tempting.

What's the point in having Essien?

Baines is a bit too luxury for me but has scored well, Kelly is injured and I don't really like Sturidge as FPL option personally.

Don't like Essien as a fantasy player, had him myself at the start of the season thinking he would be deployed in a more attacking role and at least got an assist out of it, but generally it is better to go for cheapies like Barton/Jarvis and even Wilshere has a better chance of scoring.

Team should score well this weekend, 12 point hit will make it hard to get off to a good start though

ESSIEN. Complete nightmare... plays too deep this season, I know... thought he might be a good differential for the double tho? He'll get at least 5 points, no one will have him and could end up suprising (i need to beat my rival so all or nowt). sadly, it looks like a great big ghanian NOWT

    PSV coach on Benfica:

"At home they attack a lot and sometimes they forget the defence, which is why they concede so many. Individually Benfica have strong players that can win matches. Like all teams they have their weaknesses and we'll try to exploit them."

    Benfica coach:

"If we concede again and win I don't care because that's the most important thing."

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals are around 10/11. On that!

Yeah, I needed a midfielder for 5 million or under with good fixtures in the next two weeks, and Wilshere has blp and then a double. Hoping that he'll pick up some token baps just for being English. 😉

Both are good choices. I don't have any strong feelings either way, but would probably edge towards RVP. Wigan have been quite tight away from home this year, whereas Blackpool only know how to play one way and as you imply, are likely to concede a few.

Is Sack Wenger still here? Just read your post on the previous page. Absolutely ludicrous to say we should sack Arsene. He's completely re-shaped our club from top to bottom. At the start of the season, nobody gave us a hope of qualifying for the CL let alone challenging for the title. If Wenger were to leave, there would be a mass exodus of players, Fabregas, Van Persie, Nasri...

It's easy to say this has been a failure of a season because we have come so close but be honest, did you really expect us to do this well at the start of the season? Considering we have missed Vermaelen all season (the equivalent of Chelsea beng without Terry or Utd being without Vidic) i think we've had a great season.

I would rather have Arsene over Jose. I would rather watch good football then consistently win trophy's but that's just me.

There was a hoo-hah recently where he was criticised for coming in, winning competitions with a good team and then leaving. Then the next manager would underperform, supposedly because the players were knackered.

        His unbeaten home record:

        150 matches, 125 wins and 25 draws, 342 goals scored, 87 conceded.

That's an average of 2.3 goals per home game, which is more than Chelsea, Arsenal, City and Tottenham (often praised for their attacking football) have managed this season.

It is weird, some people would rather have a Birmingham/Portsmouth situation; Win a trophy and get relegated.

He gets very good players early on and develops them
He consistently finishes in the top 4, guaranteeing European competition
        Which brings in revenue
Which the club don't need to spend on signings because of the youth system.

So why would they sack him when he's basically guaranteeing them loads of money?

No, but if he were to leave, im pretty certain we wouldn't get CL football every season and at the end of the day, that is the best competition in the world, it is what we all get excited about. Just ask any Liverpool fan how boring this season has been for them.

Liverpool will definitely be a threat next season. No doubt about it. I think you are underestimating how attached some of these players are to Wenger. It will be a massive transitional period if he left and we will struggle for a bit.

Imo, someone like Carlo Ancelotti (hugely under-appreciated by chelsea) and £40 million spending money would make you MASSIVE title challengers next season.

I see your points, but I listened to a good piece on an Irish station a month or so ago. It was about when Kenny Dalglish left Liverpool after a 4-4 draw with Everton in the cup. He left because he felt he had lost the knack to take decisive action at the right time. I think Wenger has lost that knack too, again clearly seen in a certain 4-4 draw.

Seriously? U can't believe that, when u signed Chamakh a lot of people were saying he was the sort of player youve been missing and u were been tipped by a few people.

Wenger has done a good job but for most managers their comes a point where they have taken a club as far as they can, I think that with Wenger and it's time to let someone else have a go. Just my opnion.

You know what, I think fans of other more successful teams are incredibly frustrated by the fact that parts of the Arsenal supporters are content with playing good football and not winning.

I like Arsenal and Wenger, but I think he should step down. The club may be among the most profitable around but that only pleases the shareholders, and his policy not to spend more on players he doesn't think are worth the money has in some ways has led to this trophy drought.

I don't think it would be such a bad thing if some of the players went with him. He is probably wishing he'd sold Fabregas for 50m last season anyway. If you look at that missed opportunity in a cynical, short-term way you could argue he cost the club about 25 million.

I hope he stays as I think that under a new manager the possibility of finishing around position 5-8 is bigger than staying in the TOP4.
Of course the new manager would spend loads and maybe win us a CC or FA Cup title, but I would rather see us have a realistic chance of competing at the top of every competition, which means around 10-15 really exciting games a season than one exciting Cup final and nothing more to play for (like Liverpool this season). But then I'm not English.

    Current sqaud:
    Hart Reina
    Hangeland Bardsley Simpson Coleman Luiz
    Dempsey Walcott Adam Nasri Lampard
    Zigic RVP Rooney

Transfer plans for next few weeks:

GW32 Hart > Foster + Simpson > Terry (double up on Chels def for DGW33; would prefer to transfer out Reina instead of Hart, but I need the extra cash from Hart)
GW33 Nasri > Jarvis (Looks good for DGW 34)
GW34 Terry > Carr (Cheap way into Brum def and cash for Tevez)
GW35 Zigic > Tevez (Hopefully will be back in form for DGW36)

No doubt these plans will change but does it sound good on paper?

Kevin Nolan would probably manage that if he was playing for a top four club and was scoring 10+ penalties every season.

Christ, he'll nearly manage it this season playing in a dross Newcastle side.

Rewinds back to November this year where virtually everyone on here was hyping him up big time, claiming he's basically a right footed version of Ashley Cole and easily the best right-back Chelsea have.

defoe has to be the player who generates the most rage from his owners on these boards. people were writing letters to him on here last season after his 2 point captain exploits. then he'll score a hattrick just to remain slightly on the radar

im currently looking at getting rid for bent and lampard plus a 4 pointer for a defender 4m.. Cant see anyone else attractive this week and future weeks, and have rvp. But he's at home, v stoke, and harry will play him doubtless. I could use the bent money for lampard and another, and therefore take no hits.

but i'd be playing 'no shots' defoe up front.

I'm terribly undure of what to do.

Bent and lampard in this week though, and maybe elokobi for the defender, looks sweet, for the forseeable.

But again, defoe has alot of home games to come too

defoe's getting the 90 mins lately but i'm wondering if 'arry's patience will have run out now. i think lennon is the key if he's well enough vdv would look good to go back to his striker position, then i think it will be defoe and pavlyuchenko battling for the other striker spot (for obvious reasons can't see crouch being rewarded with a start). if lennon doesn't play defoe will be fine

probably because none of them still have him 😛

Actually to be honest, it is a good shout, but you just never know whether you're going to get 3 goals or 2 points from him. The reason no one has voted for him is because he has recently got the latter far too often. I know he's grabbed a goal recently but it was lucky...I'd much rather captain Lampard or Fabregas who are playing much weaker teams. Fulham have also sorted their defence out (again) recently so I despite the amazing home record we have against them and our general home record this season, I would not risk captaining an off form striker over most of the "easier" options.

          Lol what a rant 🙂

Re the Lampard debate above, he could of scored, had a wicked free kick nearly connect with Anelka's bean, a decent (first time in ages) free kick attempt and COULD have had a penalty, despite being poor overall, he still had 2-3 chances to score or assist last night, that is enough for me to consider him.

ha, no way, or are you fishing for some controversy? I am a big "Anyone but Michael Carrick" person, even as a United fan, he has been terrible so many times I failed to see why Fergie stuck with him and even offered him a new contract recently, he gave the ball away cheaply in almost every game, and was not committed enough for someone occupying that position.

Last night he was epic, he tackled with intelligence and intensity, he passed well, set up the goal with a perfectly weighted ball to Giggs and showed Major Doubter Esquire here that maybe there is a bit of silver lining in those big shorts of his.

if Giggs had simply trapped the ball it would still have been a lovely pass, but I was really pleased with his general game, I spend 90% of most United games muttering things like "what the f*ck did we waste money on this guy for?!" and "he is so f*cking lazy, MOVE CARRICK!", not good for my blood pressure Michael Carrick, so I am really one of his harshest critics, but each to his own and all that!

If I was to get rid of Rooney, it would be for a Chelsea forward for a few weeks, but other than Drogba - who I can't afford - I'm don't really want any of them.

Nope, keeping him, there will be another more pressing transfer next week no doubt (DGW and all that) and Rooney playing Newcastle is a tasty fixture. Plus, Fulham will be a tough prospect this weekend even at Old Trafford (I think I have repeated this about 5 times in the last 24 hours, I am getting boring in my old age), so while he might get a goal or even two, I don't think it's worth two tranfers.

No such thing as a 1 point hit. I don't care in one is guranteed to play instead of only having ten men - that player could get yellow/red card, play 1 minute or score an OG!

worrying stat and one which really surprised me was lampard was the top passer in the match and carrick was quite far down.
unless it was jamie redknapp doing the stats

phew, SSN worried me for a second. still though there were a couple of lamps' forward passes which set up chances, both for ramires including the penalty

Right gents, im lately sorting my team out on a thursday, bar last week, and it has worked when ive done it.

    So, hows this sound?

    team is

    foster

    walker, ivan, (Huth/Kolarov)

    Nani, nasri, Lampard, adam, Young

Rvp, Bent (odem, coleman, kolarov bench)

This all comes from 3 thransfers, 4 pt hit.

Vidic, dempsey, Defoe TO Lampard, walker, bent.

How does this wound ? (bearing in mind, im pretty sure United will concede)

I'd probably rather Gyan than Bent - especially as you've already got Young - but other than that it's fine.

looking at gyan's chalkboards man, i wouldnt be so keen on him, not very imopressive.

anyway, opther than that gents, what about the vidic out transfer?

my other option is to keep vidic and get lampard in for depsey, and then Ba or SEB in, 5.2 left over....

He is a good poacher, last year he scored some good goals especially at the end of the season (7 goals in 700 minutes or something). This was supposed to be his year after Cavani was sold but he had a lot of injuries and problems.

seems loads have these dilemmas between nani, vdv, nasri and young. none are easy to get rid of but think you could make a good case for binning any of them

apparently the most commmon passes last night were

    Terry to Lampard (14 times)
    Bosingwa to Ramires (14 times)
    Giggs to Evra (13 times)

think that's the right way round
