Blackburn managed to tame the Premier League’s second top scorers Arsenal on home soil this weekend- frustrating Arsene Wenger’s men at the Emirates with a determined display. Although Steve Kean’s men perch just 2 points above the relegation zone, with strong confident performances like Saturday’s and a fairly promising run of fixtures to come (BIR eve MCY BOL whm MUN wol) – Rovers look likely to steer themselves out of trouble.

It is surely no coincidence that their first clean-sheet in four games corresponded with the Phil Jones’ first start since mid-December. The highly praised England U21 starlet had been on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against West Ham, but his re-emergence in the holding midfield role seems to be the calming influence that Blackburn have missed.

The combination of a newfound defensive confidence, good fixtures and a need for points, give Rovers players plenty of Fantasy potential, with Jones looking a worthy consideration once more having first caught the eye on breaking into the side early in the season.

Although listed as a defender on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Jones often plays in a deeper central midfield role. Yet to score or assist in this season, Jones is nonetheless and influential figure who has threatened the opponents goal when pushing forward. Priced at a mere 4.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Jones would slot nicely into any Fantasy defence and offers increased creativity and goal threat in a more advanced role, in addition to clean-sheet potential.

Rovers’ captain Chris Samba is certainly a big fan of Jones and what he brings to the Rovers effort…

“It is a great boost to have Jonesy back. We are going to need his enthusiasm, his character. He is a player who has that fire and never lets anything go, in any situation. He may be a young player but I think he is important for us, as are all the other young players. Now it is about who wants more to stay in this league. He is someone who works hard and never stops. He never stops running and I think he is sort who can go and make a tackle and the others will follow in his example.”

Samba is not the only one to notice Jones’ importance, the FPL Bonus Judges have thrown 9 points his way so far this term and last season, in just 9 appearances he grabbed a total of 7. The odd Bonus Point may not seem like much but, as the season draws to a close, such points can make the difference, particularly if clean sheets continue to be hard to come by within our Fantasy rearguards.

Holding an ownership of just 2.1%, Jones also offers excellent “differential” capabilities ahead of a run of three home matches in four for Rovers. While Samba (5.1) holds a higher ranking in our Watchlist with a significant goal threat, Jones is a cut-price solution that, coupled with cheap defensive options like Villa’s Kyle Walker, offers strong fixtures with a hint of attacking promise. Crucially, that helps to liberate funds for investment elsewhere in our squads at a time when double gameweek heavyweights look tempting.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Rutten is a bigger coward than even Van Marwijk. PSV haven't scored in all four big matches in the dutch league. I suppose they could still concede 3 of course.

I read some comments from him saying that PSV are going to attack Benfica tonight, attempting to exploit Benfica's supposed weaknesses at the back. And the Benfica manager said that he doesn't care if they concede, so long as they win the game.

Could all be a load of boll*cks, but Benfica haven't kept a clean sheet in their last eight games, so I'm backing the overs as well as both teams to score.

Which cheap defender (max 4.3) should I get?
Phil Jones? Alcaraz? Djorou? (I know the last two aren't great prospects for this GW, but whoever I get would probably be on the bench this GW anyway, and I'm thinking long term investment)...

He's expected to return for GW 33.

Thanks for the other options though. But why not Alcaraz? Wigan should have the possibility of getting some clean sheets after this week..
And out of those you mentioned, who would you get?

While they have decent opposition, Wigan have two home games in seven. Foley has four home games is seven including a double. Wolves arn't good but they should be fighting. If Djourou is back, I'll definitely consider him for that cheap spot but it's too speculative at this point. I have Walker. Simpson doesn't have great fixtures either.

All that's happened is that Djourou posted: "Hopefully Liverpool" on his Twitter feed last week in response to a question as to when he planned to return.

          http://twitter.com/JohanDjourou/status/52708617413083136

But he's been over-optimistic with recovery times after injuries before, remember, and Arsenal's medical team haven't said a thing as yet.

      i went foley actually

seems strange but they have fixtures that could give cleansheets if they were a good team so they might fluke one.

i could've gone sunderland but i thought i'd get a double gameweek out of foley which could be 0,0 or 2,2 or he might fluke a goal or something. i won't be using him much

Who will Fergie play at RB if O'Shea and Rafael are out? I am really quite keen on Valencia but need some assurances on whether he will start.

Cheers. I saw he slotted in at RB against Chelsea. I forgot O'Shea was injured so he may well start there if Rafael does not recover.

Rafael has a twin capable of putting in a shift at RB in case you've forgotten.

Valencia and Nani will be on the wings, Berba/Chicha up top, and two from Scholes/Anderson/Carrick/Gibson in the centre.

    Foster (Al-Habsi)
    Vidic Kolorov Walker Coleman (Kelly)
Barton Fabregas Yaya Toure VdV Nani
    Van Persie Tevez Odemwingie

    1.6M in the bank.

    1) Kolorov to Luiz sound a good move?

    2) Who should I start this weekend out of Coleman, Yaya and Barton??

    3) Anyone think of any transfer I could take for a hit. Wanted to bring in Adam and Lampard but should I wait a week perhaps?

Thanks Stevi - Just a bit worried about having Young and Bent in the same team...Putting Tevez in would be playing it safe but then i've also Silver!Hernandez would double up with Nani so i dont know!!!

So then, is it really worth getting lamps for vdv? It's either him or nani for my team.

Have a 27 pt lead over nearest rival but 3 players out and 2 doubtful...

    Foster (Al-Habsi)

    Huth Hangeland Luiz (Coleman, Djourou)

    Nani Nolan Adam Osman AYoung

    Rooney RVP (Zigic)

    Thinking either

    A) Rooney & Nolan -> Lamps & Bent
    B) Rooney, Nolan, & A Young -> Lamps, Drogba, & cheapo midfielder with DGW33 (Gardner best bet at mo)

Would then switch Nani to Nasri GW33 provided no more injuries which would give me 8 DGW players.

    A or B please?

My team is suddenly full of doubles...

    Two Man Utd (Nani, Berbs)
    Two Chelski (Luiz, Lamps)
    Two Birmingham (Foster, Johnson)
    Two Villa (Walker, Young)
    Two Arsenal (RVP, Nasri)
    and a lonely Welbeck.

Does that make sense, or do I have too many double-yolked eggs in my basket?

Right, I've done it: Lampard Luiz and Ferguson in for VDV, Young and Lolarov- 8 point hit.

    What do we think?

ITV4's marketing blurb for their coverage of tonight's Europa League matches raised a smile:

"With Manchester City and Liverpool both out of the competition it's left to the top European sides to fight it out for the title."
