Nemanja Vidic looks poised to return for United this weekend. Luis Suarez plays 90 minutes in Uruguay’s draw with Jordan, Hatem Ben Arfa is willing to play anywhere for Newcastle, Billy Jones seems set to miss Monday’s midlands derby, while Antolin Alcaraz is at last fit and available for Everton:

Vidic Due for Weekend Return

The United skipper has recovered from the head knock that forced him off in the previous Gameweek against Arsenal and is set to start away to Cardiff, according to reports.

The Scout Says: A return for Vidic would be welcome relief for David Moyes, bearing in mind Phil Jones is likely to miss out with a groin problem. The United manager remains unconvinced by Chris Smalling at centre-half and has fielded the former Fulham man just once through the middle this term, despite both Vidic and Rio Ferdinand suffering from injury. United have managed a clean sheet on just three occasions this term – it’s noticeable that on each occasion, Vidic was named in the XI. Ironically, his return is likely to boost Jonny Evans’ Fantasy potential; with the latter priced at 5.0 to his captain’s 5.8, his budget-friendly appeal could sway Fantasy managers looking for a route into United’s defence around Gameweek 14, where they face three home games in four prior to Christmas.

Suarez Wings His Way Home

The Liverpool forward’s Fantasy owners were hoping he would be benched for Uruguay’s clash with Jordan last night but he played the full 90 minutes of a goalless draw, which ensured their qualification to next year’s World Cup.

The Scout Says: As reported earlier in the week, Suarez is expected to be flown back from his homeland via Liverpool owner John W Henry’s private jet. This would allow him a quick return to Merseyside ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s derby trip to Everton – given that last night’s game didn’t get underway until 11pm, he wouldn’t be back on these shores until late tonight if he took the scheduled flights. Despite being fielded for the entire match against Jordan, there seems no doubt he’ll be selected by Brendan Rodgers against the Toffees, with a quick flight home lessening the likelihood of jet lag as he looks to extend his record of eight goals and three assists in six appearances.

Ben Arfa Desperate for Game Time

The Frenchman has admitted he’s willing to be fielded in any outfield position for the Magpies after being omitted from the first-team over the last couple of Gameweeks.

“I’ll play anywhere on the pitch if the gaffer thinks it’s best for the team. I’ll give 100 per cent anywhere he puts me. I’m a professional football player – I have to give everything on the pitch. It is the same for all the players. I’ll play anywhere – just not goalkeeper.”

The Scout Says: Subbed off in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton, Ben Arfa’s starting berth looked in question after Alan Pardew hinted at a lack of work rate. A shift to the centre of the front three in a 4-3-3 a couple of matches later seemed to have reignited his prospects but his failure to impress persuaded his manager to roll out a 4-4-2, with Shola Ameobi and Loic Remy up top. Certainly, Pardew looks keen to retain a winning side – he even left fit-again Fabricio Coloccini on the bench against Spurs last week, rewarding Mike Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for keeping a clean sheet against Chelsea. With the Tyneside team now set for back-to-back home games against Norwich and West Brom, Remy and Yohan Cabaye are picking up plenty new owners – Ben Arfa has now dropped from 7.5 to 6.8 in recent weeks and with the industrious Moussa Sissoko preferred on the right, he faces a real battle to be granted his first-team wish.

Jones Set to Miss Midlands Derby

Steve Clarke discussed West Brom’s injury situation ahead of Monday night’s crucial home derby with Villa. The Baggies boss is hopeful both Nicolas Anelka and Scott Sinclair will be available, though Billy Jones is expected to miss out with a hamstring injury again, while Ben Foster is still sidelined with a foot injury:

“Billy’s improving; he did the warm-up with the group yesterday. This week will maybe come a bit too quickly for him but he is improving well…Ben is improving but improving slowly. He is still a little bit away from match action – but there are no dramas.”

The Scout Says: Steven Reid looks set to continue at right-back against Villa in Jones’ absence. Clarke’s failure to mention the Achilles problem that forced Boaz Myhill out of the recent Wales squad certainly suggest the keeper’s withdrawal was purely precautionary. Given that the Baggies have four home games in six over the packed upcoming schedule, some are targeting their backline options – Myhill, at 4.5, remains an option in light of Foster’s slow recovery as the schedule picks up pace, though Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell looks the most appealing; McAuley has notched twice and picked up an assist, while Ridgewell has a goal and assist to his name thus far.

Alcaraz Finally Fit for Toffees

Roberto Martinez has revealed that Antolin Alcaraz has recovered from the hamstring injury that has stopped his career at Everton getting off the ground. Although the Paraguayan looks set to miss out in this weekend’s Merseyside derby, Martinez has hinted he will play a part in his defensive plans once his match sharpness is up to speed:

“Antolin is fully fit now and has been working well in the last week, so he is one week ahead of what I expected. I would say he is ready to play a part in a game but it is probably about picking the right moment. A full intense derby would probably be the wrong moment to give him that opportunity. He has been keen to try to fight for his place and that has probably gone against his physical situation. Now he is ready to open his Everton career and make sure he is the player we all know him to be, bringing the experience and know-how into the side, which is going to be a really important weapon for us.”

The Scout Says: Having acquired the centre-half from former club Wigan, Martinez is clearly a fan. With 11 Gameweeks of the season gone, Everton are the only club to field the same back-four and keeper in every league match and have offered Fantasy managers a real security of selection, with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin looking indispensable at centre-half. It remains to be seen whether Martinez will finally trial the 3-4-3 formation previously mooted upon his arrival from the Latics – certainly, Alcaraz faces a tough task to force his way into a four-man backline that has already racked up six clean sheets this term. The immediate schedule is firmly against the Toffees but with three home games in four from Gameweek 16 onwards, investment looks on the cards, though the Paraguayan’s propensity for picking up injuries, allied with uncertainty over his starting role, means the likes of Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman remain more assured picks.

A fit and nailed-on Collins for 4.3m has surely got to be the biggest bargain defender right now, surely?

Don't think West Ham are going to fair that well either - based on their fixtures.

Villa's next 8 are far better (best when we look at ticker).

I believe we're talking about bench warmers here too - I'd not play Baker, but as an auto sub it could be worse.

Stats are one thing but you have to actually produce to be a viable option.

In the next 5 the only game that is a "great" fixture for Norwich is Crystal Palace...

His underlying stats plus Norwich's fixtures.

Oh, and most of all, the desperation to find a half decent midfielder.

I'm not convinced but he is only 5.9 and was top 10 midfielders last season, though Norwich look even worse this time 'round.

Newcastle at home have improved. Liverpool, while having been shaky at the back, have now swapped back to their old system and Agger is back so they are defensively tough. West Brom at home are defensively strong too. Swansea can be pretty tough to wear down too.

The only team I see Norwich as certain to score against are Palace.

2-1 is a very common result (usually - this season has been ridiculous)

I'm sorry but Norwich have scored 9 goals in 11 league games. He has scored 1 of those goals meaning the 8 have come from other sources. He has had, statistically, 1/9th of their goals so even if they score 1 in every single one of those matches (which I highly doubt) he has shown little to suggest he'll be responsible for more than 1 of those goals.

I'm not saying I think he's a good option, I'm saying there is no reason their fixtures would deter you if you were looking for an attacking asset from Norwich

Their fixtures would deter me is my point because they are weak from an attack sense. As I said only Palace I could see definitely conceding.

Could be shifted to right back with Debuchy suspended, then he has to battle to partner Coloccini when Debuchy is back....
Don't really like his chances after his poor start to the season, I still think Coloccini is the number one, Williamson or Yanga to partner

A phrase used a lot on here is 'underlying stats'.

When Ramsey was banging them in it was argued that 'he couldn't keep his current rate of conversion'.

Ramseys stats were through the roof yet some wouldn't buy him, yet invest in players with no actual form because there 'underlying stats' are impressive.

    Its a bit insane really.

He managed 4 goals from 6 shots on target in his first 6 games, that current rate was unsustainable.

Since then though, he's had more shots on target (8) and managed the 2 goals and 2 assists in 5 games.

I know, it wasn't a point against him, I was just saying that compared to his opening 6 weeks he hasn't maintained the "rate of conversion" that you alluded to in your initial post.

You have understood wrong the term "underlying stats". Ramsey had bad stats for his point return in early season. That's why some people (fortunately) didn't jump in that bandwagon.

        I understand it exactly.

My point is people put too much weighting on their interpretation of stats.

A player has 10 shots on target hit every effort straight at the keeper 10 shots on target, explosion imminent that stats would suggest he has been unlucky, perhaps he's just crap?

A player manages 4 goals from 6 shots on targets, people say there is no way his conversion can continue.

I agree with you TH, absolute crap being spouted regarding "underlying stats". If underlying stats were any indicator Paulinho should be the top goal scorer in the league.

In fairness - every one of the top 5 midfielders for "shots inside the box" last season managed 10 or more goals.

And it's a fair point of course but there are midfielders (such as Paulinho) who will shoot and shoot and shoot but either hit the goalie's chest or put it wide.

Stats can be seriously misleading in a lot of regards. That's why I've been baffled by the Snodgrass stuff.

Pretty much the only stats I look at are shots inside box for goals and chances created for assists.

Hence why I've never been tempted by players like Townsend or Taarabt because they are a classic example of misleading stats.

The only other way that you can avoid the "traps" is to actually watch the games. If you look at the stats Paulinho and Snodgrass are both great options, but that's because there is no stat that says "this player and/or his team mates can't shoot to save their lives"

It just means the stats that indicate a players' performance such as shots, shots in the box, shots on target, touches in the box etc.

It can be very useful when assessing a player's performances.

If a player has 3 shots and 2 goals in 3 games, it means he is unlikely to score at a conversion rate

i agree with this, the only stats i am bothered about is goals, assists and clean sheets, people bang on about townsend, walcott, mirallas etc and compare them to yaya or ramsey, i would rather have 1 goal scored from 1 shot than 0 goals scored from 5 shots

I know you are only using them as examples but I think this is flawed. Plenty of people warned others off Clownsend because his stats, like a certain Adel Taarabt, are misleading in the fact they are lots of shot from outside the box and off target.

Mirallas' stats are certainly no better than Ramsey or Yaya's and thirdly if either Yaya or Ramsey score more goals from here until the end of the season (provided Theo stays fit) then I'll eat my socks.

Which one to field and which to bench for this GW:

Well with Williams playing Swansea have only conceded 1 goal from open play away from home in their 4 games, and a penalty vs Soldado.

Given Fulham's form I think I'd go for him as I can't see Liverpool not scoring.

Thanks. Appreciated. This decision torments me. I basically think the same as you, but then I checked and it's quite a while since the last time that Fulham didn't score at home, while Everton has clean sheet in last 3 matches, plus against Chelsea earlier. So the chances are that Everton keeps clean sheet while Fulham gets that odd goal.

Do you think Suarez will be in form after midweek international matchup? I'm quite cautious, definitely not captaining him, but that has also affected my decision between Chico and Coleman - I mean, that I have not yet made that decision.

Haha... I hardly ever go with gut, I over analyze everything.

But I think you're right. I shouldn't even think of this, really. I bought Suarez for this round and considered captaining him, so clearly I do believe in his chances to score against Everton, and therefore should not play a defender who plays against him. It just wouldn't make any sense.

Thanks again. Helped me to clear my thoughts. Set for Saturday: points can start to flow to my direction, I'm ready.

By the way, if you are considering Swansea defence, for your information, Fulham hasn't scored more than one in any Premier League home match this season despite having played Cardiff, Stoke and WBA.

Yeah Sakho is probably the biggest worry, especially with Agger and Skrtel nailing down CB spots. He won't be demoted to the bench all season given his price tag, and this would be a perfect way for Rodgers to play him while keeping his preferred CB pairing.

Question:- Does everyone hold stock in the, very often touted, you can't bench expensive players. Someone was posting recently (I forget who) about holding silva on their bench and using their transfer elsewhere, on a cheaper mid.

At least 2 people told him he should drop silva as you can't have 9m+ player pn the bench.
I think this is rubbish. Why not? For one or two games having costly benchwarmers isn't a problem, in fact refusing might actually be costing players.

For example, just say this week you had Sessegnon, Ozil, oscar, Ireland and Brady (if you know he'll play 90) I'd have no issue dropping oscar to the bench. It shouldn't be based on cost in totality.

What if Chelsea were away to, say arsenal. Even more reason.

I think that people get too caught up on hot having expensive benches. Yes you wouldn't want it as an ongoing weekly thing, due to a probable better use of budget, but for one week it really shouldn't be an issue at all.

While you have some logic certainly I think my biggest issue is that with a big player they can score whenever. If, as in your example, Chelsea play Arsenal I would never bench my players from that match because both of them are competing for top places so they want to put in the effort to win. Similarly I would never bench a big player against a smaller team. For me, I don't believe fixtures influence the truly top players.

I bench whoever I think is the worst option regardless of the price. Just because someone is cheap doesn't mean they won't outscore whoever else is in your team.

I know he's not 9M but for a defender 6M is close to the same, and I benched Zabaleta for Turner 3 weeks ago when Turner had CAR and Zabaleta had che and it paid off 7 to 0

If I had kept Oscar and just done Lukaku > Remy this week, Oscar would be on my bench instead of Januzaj this week.

Help appreciated, my choices this week come down to:

      a) Sturridge to Suarez (captain Aguero)
      b)Lukaku to Remy (captain Remy)
      c) Both (-4) and captain Remy

      What do you think?

      Guys...

Now that Enrique is sidelined for a while - who will take his place in the Liverpool team?

Probably Ally Cissoko who is a left back, but it could be Sakho. I wouldn't risk either at this stage
